Diamond Hog Update: March 25, 2012

1

Since the last Diamond Hog Update over 3 weeks ago, the Razorbacks have continued rolling along on the diamond. After finishing 2-1 at the Houston College Classic, the Hogs have won 13 of their...

Diamond Hog Update: March 1, 2012

6

Ten games into the regular season, the Diamond Hogs are performing as expected, with a 9-1 record heading into the Houston College Classic this weekend. In route, the Razorbacks have swept...

It's That Time Again

7

The 2012 Arkansas Razorbacks Baseball season kicks off on Friday. After last year's disappointing showing in the NCAA Tournament, the Diamond Hogs are returning a large core to make another run at...

Men's Track Ranked #1

+

Coach Chris Bucknam's squad is making great strides toward returning Arkansas to its rightful place in the track and field community. The Razorbacks are putting their #1 ranking on the line this weekend as they host the Razorback Invitational, with an absolutely loaded field featuring 10 of the top-25 teams in the country, including 4 of the top-5 and 6 of the top-10.

Arkansas Gymnastics Ranked #1

+

After scoring a school-recond 197.225 against LSU last week, the Gym'Backs are 6-0 (with all wins over ranked teams) this season, and have achieved the first #1 national ranking in program history - no small feat for a program that is less than 10 years old. The Razorbacks take on #8 Florida in Gainesville tonight. Keep up the good work, girls!

Well, We All Knew This Was Coming

+

Joe Adams is SEC Special Teams Player of the Week after the magic show he put on during his 60-yard punt return against Tennessee. Adams has 3 PRs for TDs this season, which leads the NCAA. Houdini's in the house, indeed.

Johnson and Bequette: SEC Players of the Week

2

Dennis Johnson is named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week, no doubt for his 98-yard kickoff return against the Gamecocks. If anyone is still doubting whether DJ should be the de facto starting running back, you should know that Johnson is second in the league with 150.5 all-purpose rushing yards per game. Jake Bequette was named SEC (Co-)Defenseive Lineman for the week, in part because of his absolutely murderous sack of USC QB Connor Shaw. I'm not going to lie... I may have replayed that hit a few times just for the sheer brutality. Arkansas players have now been named SEC Players of the Week 10 times this season so far.

Franklin and Hocker: SEC Players of the Week

1

Linebacker Jerry Franklin was named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, in part for his momentum-stealing 94-yard scoop-and-score (were you watching, Julian Horton?) in the 2nd half. Zach Hocker took home SEC Special Teams Player of the Week for going 3-for-3 on field goals in the 2nd half as the Razorbacks rallied for their 3rd come-from-behind win on the season. Counting these 2, an Arkansas player has been named SEC Player of the Week 8 times this season.

Dennis Johnson: SEC Offensive Player of the Week

+

Johnson is recognized by the conference for his career-high 160 yards rushing against Ole Miss. A Razorback RB not named "Knile Davis" lighting it up. Can you believe it?

Tevin Mitchel: SEC Freshman of the Week

1

In his first career start, replacing the injured Darius Winston (who, frankly, as the Hogs' only 5-star player, hasn't really been pulling his own weight), Mitchel tallied 7 tackles (including 3 solos) as the Razorback defense held Auburn scoreless for the final 3 quarters. Mitchel is also the leading freshman tackler in the conference with 30. We managed to lure him away from Nebraska at the last minute, and this kid looks like he's going to be legit.

Wilson and Wright: SEC Co-Offensive Players of the Week

2

Tyler and Jarius are recognized by the conference for their literally record-breaking performance against Texas A&M. Tyler threw for a school-record 510 yards, while Wright broke the Arkansas single-game receiving record by halftime.

Diamond Hog Update: SEC Tournament Results and WHERE I DON'T EAT CROW

2

If you're confused about the title, I was all prepared to eat some crow for my previous prediction that we would not host a regional. Well, the regional sites were announced today... and Baum did...

Diamond Hog Update: SEC West Champions

9

Well, the regular season is over. It wasn't always pretty or exciting, but when the dust finally settled, the Hogs stood alone atop the SEC West standings. Why wasn't it pretty? The Razorbacks...

Arkansas Basketball to Play UCONN in the 2011 Big East/SEC Challenge

+

Well, Mike Anderson's inaugural (sorta) season as head coach just got a little bit rougher. After being assigned to Big East bottom feeder (which still means they're probably better than average) Seton Hall last season, the Hogs get matched with the reigning National Champions for the upcoming season. Can you imagine what an upset of the Huskies could do for the program's direction?

Razorbacks Track and Field Wins SEC Outdoor Title

1

I know its "fashionable" to disparage Chris Bucknam, but give credit where credit is due. This is Arkansas' 16th SEC Outdoor title.

Razorback Baseball vs. Florida - Tonight (May 7) at 7:00 PM on ESPNU

+

After winning the first two games of the series, highlighted by a complete game by DJ Baxendale in Game 1 and Randall Fant and Barrett Astin shutting down the Florida offense in Game 2, the Diamond Hogs will be going for a sweep of the #5 Florida Gators.

Razorback Baseball at Georgia - Saturday at noon on ESPN2

+

Yes, I'm woefully late on my next baseball article, but I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone interested that the Hogs will be on ESPN2 (that's a channel people actually have!) at noon on Saturday. Hopefully, Ryan Mallett will have been drafted by then...

Top 10 Finish for Razorback Gymnastics

+

I know gymnastics isn't one of the sports that Razorback fans generally "care about", but I like to give credit where it is due. The Arkansas gymnastics team finished the season ranked 9th in the country - the third top 10 finish in program history, and the 7th consecutive season that they've finished in the top 15. The amazing part? Arkansas has only fielded a DI gymnastics team for 9 years. Congrats, girls.

Diamond Hog Update: Good News, Everyone!

It's been another two weeks since my last update (grad schools unfortunately takes time away from more important things, like baseball), but things are looking considerably brighter. After...

Razorback Baseball vs. LSU - 7:00 Saturday on ESPNU

3

Just a quick heads up that the Hogs' game against LSU on Saturday will be televised on ESPNU.

Diamond Hog Update - Two Weeks Gone

3

Hey, Diamond Hog fans! It's been roughly two weeks since my last update, and, unfortunately, I don't have a lot of good news to report. The Hogs lost key relief pitcher Geoffrey Davenport for the...

Diamond Hog Update - San Diego State Series

The Diamond Hogs made the most of their trip out west, taking 3 of 4 from San Diego State and coming just shy of a sweep by the thinnest of margins.  Poor relief pitching, which plagued the Hogs...

Diamond Hog Update: June 09 - Hogs win the Fayetteville Regional

Okay, so I must admit that I've really been phoning in my coverage of Razorback baseball lately.  Moving and going back to grad school really takes it out of you.  On the bright side, though, I'm...

Diamond Hog Update: June 2

Diamond Hog Update: May 17

So that's where those brooms went.  After spending the first half of the season sweeping more than their fair share of opponents, the Diamond Hogs finally got swept themselves.  Worse, it was at...
