Grew up as an A's fan in the bay area in the heyday in the 1970's. Now live in Boston where my kids have become (gasp) Red Sox fans. I love AN because it's a really fun way to feel like I'm still in touch with the great team of my childhood and its wonderful, devoted fans.

Yes, moneyball - the real version about having a true strategy based on real data for building a team and winning games - is coming to the NFL. Everyone's best buddy Bill Belichick is the leading practitioner. The rest of the hidebound, tough-guy NFL is behind MLB.

Is it a coincidence that Belichick shares the same initials as our own Dear Leader?

Athletics Nation Why Hitting for the Cycle is Overrated

Tonight, Adrian Beltre went 4 for 5 with 2 HR's, a triple, a single, 6 RBI's and 3 runs scored.  He'll get less press for this than the next guy to hit for the cycle will, yet Beltre had a better night - by 2 bases - than a guy who "just" hits for the cycle.

The cycle is cool, and a great achievement.  But it's more of a statistical oddity than a particularly noteworthy thing.  A 3HR game, or a game like Beltre's, should be more celebrated than the cycle.

Would you believe Milton thinks it's the club's fault and not his?
