Daje Johnson commits
Glad to see the offer finally come through for Daje. --GoBR--
From a couple of twitter posts, Daje Johnson switched his commitment from TCU to Texas a few minutes ago.

You can't keep it secret!
Gotta share this. Seems particularly pertinent after Mack Brown’s (more complete than usual) blackout of Thursday night’s scrimmage.
Summer 1968. Emory Bellard was installing the wishbone option attack after three 6-4 seasons in which the Longhorns ran mostly an I-formation, one-back offense. Darrell Royal wanted to utilize the three good running backs in the program, and UT’s defensive coaches had spent months planning for Houston’s veer option since we were to play the Cougars in our opener. Turner, Shipley, Bergeron turning heads
The Statesman's Kirk Bohls reports that three incoming freshmen are making summer statements in the ongoing workouts. Jaxon Shipley is no surprise. Josh Turner sounds encouraging -- looks like we'll be playing 1 sophomore and 3-4 freshmen at corner this season. Bohls says FB Joe Bergeron is a workout and fitness geek. Less promising is the report on a pair of frosh linebackers, Chet Moss and Steve Edmond.

Thoughts on attrition?
So . . . just noodlin’ on something while waiting out a pitching change. Way too many of those in MLB. Screw you, Tony La R . . .
Eyeing the football season, we’re sitting at 87 players on scholarship (unless my count is off), which means a couple of attrition cases before August. Who’s outward bound?
Looking ahead, we have 16 commitments for the class of 2012. We’ll have 13 seniors this fall, so that leaves us another three players over. And the staff clearly will sign more than 16, probably more than 20. Gotta corral a couple more offensive linemen, probably a DB (maybe two) . . . and there are offers out to several blue-chip talents, in and out of state.
Where do we find the scholarship space?
A mystery solved
Until this weekend, I had hopes for our offense. Our BASEBALL offense. No more.
Details after the jump.
It'll be up to the kids
Have you tried to project next year's depth chart? I fiddled with it this week. I came away surprised at how few Sr.’s and Jr.’s made the list. Mack Brown usually does a news conference before spring training, and he’ll probably provide a few names and maybe announce some positions switches next week. He won’t include the numbers you’ll find here.
My concept was to determine how many members of next year’s two-deep will be newcomers – defined as players who signed this month or who signed a year ago this month. They’re the new guys; those in their third, fourth or fifth seasons in the program are veterans. Let’s get to it.
Not The Big Brother Anymore...
With the announcement of Stacy Searels as offensive line coach, Mack’s makeover is complete. Unless/until somebody else leaves. Counting the strength & conditioning coach, that’s seven new faces on a 10-man staff. My apologies on the ages – what’s listed after the jump is close, but I was unable to find exact ages for some of the coaches.
Planting a seed?
Mack Brown's Wednesday update. (It's here.) Near the bottom, talking about dealing with coaches in difficult times, Mack relates a Terry Donahue story.
Maybe it's ol' suspicious me, but I couldn't help but think he was hinting at something.
Mike Davis out
Feared this when he didn't return last week.
Redshirting: The numbers game
Mack Brown said recently he expects more true freshmen to play this year than in the past. You probably know Mack says this every year. At approximately the same time, using about the same words.
Usually, he lies. Not on purpose – it just works out that way. Last year, for example, three of the true freshmen who were playing got sidelined by injury early enough that they could be redshirted.

I always knew we were a big fish in the world of football. I didn’t know we were THE big fish. I sure didn’t know how massive a big fish we are.
Graduation day!
Among UT's grid graduates on Saturday were Kwame Cavil, who completed his eligibility in 2000, and Fozzy Whittaker, who earned his undergrad degree in three years. He has two years of football eligibility remaining. Roddrick Muckelroy flew in from Cincinnati for the ceremony. Full story
Former Longhorn, Aggie Zapalac
Good piece on long-time assistant coach Willie Zapalac, who died this week. He worked with Bear, Darrell, Bum. Story here.
Track question
Anybody know how we finished seventh in the Big 12 meet? Was that expected? With 56 points, were closer to last place than fourth. Just curious.
Draft prospects
Good piece on Sergio Kindle's draft prospects. Of note -- an accompanying chart (which was in the print version but not in the online version linked here) was a round-by-round prediction for UT seniors. Charlie Tanner is listed as a siixth-round pick, interesting given that the perception on several fronts was that Adam Ulatoski (who is not projected) was our best OL last season. Chron's picks had Sergio and Earl Thomas in Round 1, Houston and McCoy in Round 2, Shipley in Round 3, Tanner sixth and Lawrence in Round 7.
