The Upcoming CBA: One Point of View
Very thorough article by Tim Donahue.
There’s a lot of stuff here, but…for me…it really all comes down to the hard cap. A hard cap will not be a silver bullet that will solve all of the NBA’s problems, but I’m not foolish enough to want to try to solve all of the NBA’s problems. It is, however, the simplest, most effective way to take the biggest step towards this well articulated goal:
"a system in which all 30 teams can compete, and, if they are well-managed, to make a profit." – NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver, April 15, 2011

Mystery solved. Mark Cuban left game 4 early because he "couldn't hold it in any longer."
"Six large Diet Cokes during the game will do that to you."
Pelton: Brandon Roy's Impact Since His Return
Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus writes...
---------------
Looking strictly at the period since Roy's return, the Blazers have been better with him on the floor, outscoring opponents by 6.7 points per 48 minutes. They're +4.8 per 48 minutes when he's been on the bench. That might actually understate Roy's impact, as he has been a relatively small part of lopsided wins over the Cleveland Cavaliers (by 41 points) and the Washington Wizards (by 35) that have padded Portland's differential."
...
Teams still have to respect Roy's ability, especially as a shooter (even as he's making just 32.4 percent of his threes). That has served to open things up for his teammates, most notably when Roy is the Blazers' lead ballhandler. Per BasketballValue.com, Portland is scoring at a rate of 109.6 points per 100 possessions with Roy at the point since his return. That makes him an upgrade over Patty Mills, who had been backing up starter Andre Miller.

Greg Oden's story isn't about basketball, for now
Great article on Oden by Henry Abbott. Certainly worth a read. Here's an excerpt:
We judge players by things like uniform, draft position, contract size and rebound rate. That has been the basis of the relationship between Oden and fans.
But the basketball story seems pretty small and stupid now. That's not a conversation for this year. Sure, there are things to resolve -- he'll be a free agent or not, he'll rehab well or not -- but all that, to me, comes after his having to climb one hell of a mountain.
Us sports fans may have had a rejiggering of our entertainment habits with the news of his latest microfracture knee surgery. We're facing disappointment in our amusement.
That's a laughable little concern compared to Oden himself. He's facing a huge mental health hurdle, a total redefinition of who he is and how he sees himself, and a real need to find things outside of basketball that mean a lot to him.

NBA Unveils 2011 All-Star Game Ballot
Was Batum snubbed? I'm not saying he should be an all-star, but I think he at least deserves to be listed on the ballot. A sample of other small forwards from the West that were selected include Ron Artest, Trevor Ariza, Grant Hill, and Caron Butler.
Batum is averaging a higher FG% and more points than all of those players, even though playing on a team with a slower pace.
I was looking into this, though, and found out that the all-star ballot was put together in mid-October, so all season stats up until this point weren't even factored in.
The Basketball Jones Talking About Brandon Roy
Roy is mentioned as one of the "losers of the week." Starts at about the 9:30 mark. Skeets and Tas praise Roy's toughness, but then consider the possibility that we may have seen the old Roy for the last time. Also, in regards to the playoffs, they describe the Blazers as being on the outside looking in, saying that the West is just too difficult.
Interesting to hear a perspective outside of Portland. Also one of the few times I've ever seen Skeets and Tas serious before.
Trail Blazers still awaiting second opinion on left knee of Brandon Roy
Not really anything new, but Elliot Williams had his surgery today and this part was also interesting:
"The Blazers did not send Roy to Los Angeles for a personal examination, and didn’t take new pictures of his knee because the Blazers medical staff feels no acute injury has taken place. Instead, they feel Roy’s swelling and pain is merely a reoccurrence of symptoms Roy feels every season. The hope is that Roy’s knee will recover as in previous seasons."
You'd think they would take new pictures just in case. I don't want any assuming going on.
Rudy Fernandez files grievance
"A league source says Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez(notes) has filed a grievance with the league after he was fined $50,000 for comments made on his behalf about him seeking a trade."

Breaking: Hornets, Rockets, Pacers & Nets working on 4 team deal. Ariza to NO. C. Lee to HOU. Collison & Posey to IND. Murphy to NJ.
-@chadfordinsiderWell shoot, I was really hoping we'd get Collison.
Update: Four teams agree on trade. (Thanks Billy Hoyle)

The Bulls reached agreement with Keith Bogans on a two year deal valued at about $2.5 million.
ESPN Exposed as Publicity Machine for LeBron James
ESPN reporter, Arash Markazi, published a controversial article this morning, detailing a night out on the town with Lebron James and his entourage. The article has since been pulled and is no longer available. However, Chris Littmann took a screenshot of the article before it was pulled. You can read the article in its entirety here:
The article itself is not that controversial (although it does include mentions of "nude women in a bathtub", "girls with no panties", and excessive alcohol), but ESPN taking down the article is what's controversial. There is speculation that ESPN did so because they own the NBA's 7.6 billion dollar television rights and didn't want to jeopardize their relationship with the NBA or its poster child: LeBron James.
I highly recommend reading the following interview about the story, in which ESPN is described as "an entertainment network that doesn't want to do anything to anger the sports organizations” and as “a positive publicity machine for James and the NBA.”
ESPN’s Coverage Fit for a King
The Basketball Jones also created a two-part video series to reenact the night (hilarious):

Nate McMillan welcomes new Trail Blazers assistants, ponders changes in coaching style
Jason Quick posted this at 6:49pm and updated it at 7:04pm (within his 7-7:30pm timeline he gave). I don't see how this is "drama." There has to be something else coming... but why would he be busy posting this if there was something bigger coming?
Update - 7:49pm: "Trail Blazers actively seeking trade for Rudy Fernandez according to agent Andy Miller. Boston, Chicago and New York are leading candidates"
@jwquick
Sources: Paul prefers Magic to Knicks
"The Orlando Magic have replaced the New York Knicks as the top team on Chris Paul's list of preferred destinations, according to league sources.
Paul believes the Magic, with Dwight Howard, would be a better fit for him. Also, Paul realizes the Magic have more to offer New Orleans in a trade and therefore views it as a more realistic landing spot.
New York, Portland and Dallas are still all on Paul's short list."
Kings Sign Pooh Jeter.
Good for him.
Trail Blazers' Armon Johnson holds own against John Wall, furthering case to earn roster spot
Good write up on today's scrimmage vs. Washington and John Wall by Joe Freeman.
Update: Note the video posted by Douglast in the comments for some more insight on the scrimmage. Good stuff.

Bayless and Rudy for ?
We now have a 7 day waiting period while the Jazz try to figure out if it's in their best interest to match our offer for Wesley Matthews or use the money for other means. Just for fun, let's say they don't match (this FanPost is for pure speculation).
With Matthews on the team, I'd argue that Bayless and Rudy are completely expendable. Rudy requires no explanation; he's gone. Bayless, on the other hand, isn't going to be our PG of the future and he's too undersized to thrive at the 2. I know he's our primary backup to Miller, but I'd rather start developing someone new as Miller won't be around forever.
Another issue is that, with Matthews, our roster is set at 14 players. Personally, I would love to be able to sign both Armon Johnson and Patty Mills. I see too much potential in both of them to let either go. However, to be able to sign both, we'd have to make a trade. We're definitely trading Rudy, but I think we could get a much better deal if we packaged Rudy and Bayless together.
So, my question is, if you could package Rudy and Bayless together for one other player, who would it be? I'm leaning towards another 4 or another 1 (if it's a player that's more of a "pure PG"). What do you think?
"According to 95.5 The Game, Blazers prez Larry Miller will interview OKC asst. GM Rich Cho."
@blazersblog
Randy Foye can be yours, the Wizards let him walk
Any interest in adding Foye as a backup PG?
Trade Drawer - June 25th
Now that the 2010 NBA Draft is officially over, we have a slightly clearer picture of what the Blazers roster will look like next year. However, there are still issues to be addressed and I don't think anyone expects the current lineup to be the same lineup that arrives at the start of training camp. The following scenario is what I would like to see happen this off-season - just a couple minor trades, not a blockbuster, but a couple changes that I think will put the Blazers in a better position to be title contenders next year without breaking up our core group of players. Please use this trade drawer to suggest your own trade ideas, too. Thanks!

Mike Rice Hinting At Blazers Trading Up in Draft
Mike Rice just hinted on Wheels at Work that he thinks he knows who the Blazers will draft tomorrow, but that a few things need to happen first. He said that exciting things should happen for the Blazers around a quarter to 5pm. What spot would be picking 15 minutes into the draft? Looks like we might be trading up after all.
Ran into Batum yesterday at the Washington Square Mall. I didn't really want to bother him, but I finally I caved in and asked for a photo (he is my favorite Blazer, after all). Super nice guy.

"NBA draft early entry Kevin Seraphin injured his knee last Saturday. He will normaly be absent on Wednesday's PO game reports Basketnews ..."
It's also being reported that he may drop out of the NBA draft.
In the most recent mock draft over at DraftExpress, they have the Blazers picking Kevin Seraphin with the #22 pick. Then he injures his knee. Go figure. The curse continues...
NBA All-Defensive Team
I think Kobe getting first team is a joke. Artest is the one that always matches up with the other team's best player. Also, Josh Smith should have been on the first team and Bogut got robbed.
By the way, heard Blazers sent the league ** TWENTY** calls from the game last night. Also told "Dallas probably had another 20."
@johnhollinger
This was from yesterday, so it's a little old, but it's referencing the awful officiating from Friday night's game. I was just curious, though, what happens when the league gets videos of blown calls like these? Do they issue an apology or something? Also, do they keep a tally of which refs are screwing up the most, so they can keep refs accountable and eventually fire the ones that are complained about most often?
Bayless' Role Beyond This Season
There's been some recent discussion of a Rudy for Darren Collison trade this summer. I'm a big Collison fan, so I give it a thumbs up and it seems to make sense for both parties. However, if something like this were to happen (completely hypothetical), where does that leave Bayless? People like to describe Bayless as a SG in a PG body. If Bayless could become that PG of the future for us, I'd love it. If not, I'm all for trading him and getting a legit backup SG in return. That being said, how would you compare Bayless' value to other young players around the league, like DeMar Derozan and Stephen Curry, for example?
"Just got an update that Brandon Roy WILL play tonight!"
