Charting Florida State Football: Sortable Data Tool
It's no secret that Tomahawk Nation takes a process driven view towards sports analysis and to that end the staffers have been charting FSU football games. This hard work gives way to the creation of top notch articles like the one Dr.KennethNoisewater created just a few days ago focusing on Florida State Football's passing attack. Dr.KennethNoisewater took a lot of time to mold all that raw data into something that could be used to tell a story, but he shouldn't have had to. Follow the jump for access to a new tool that anybody can use for their own research on the statistical story of FSU football.
Head on over to http://fsudb.netai.net/ to view the tool.
Descrption of fields:
- Formations for Offense and Defense - Select a formation for comparision of an offense and defense. Use "All" for all formations.
- Stats for offense or defense - Show statistics for offense or defense. This is from a FSU perspective so selecting Offense will show statistics for FSU's offense
- Stats for Passing, Running, or All - View stats for only pass plays, only run plays, or all plays
- Show Standard downs, Passing downs, or All - Using the football outsiders' definition
-Footballoutsiders.comPassing Downs are defined as:
- second down with 8 or more yards to go
- third or fourth down with 5 or more yards to go
All other downs are Standard Downs.
- Limit data to certain date range, conference, and/or team(s) - Constrain the data. Select a data range and/or a conference or set of teams. Multiple teams or conferences can be selected by holding the Ctrl button and clicking on different teams or conferences.
- Exclude garbage time? - Exclude plays in the game during which the game is not considered close.
The criteria for being "close" are as follows: a game within 24 points in the first quarter, with 21 points in the second quarter, and within 16 points in the second half.
-Footballoutsiders.com - Show data in chart or direction - There are two different types of charts that can be created with this tool. The standard chart will show play data based on down and quarter while the passing chart will show pass data based on the area of the field involved.
The chart ends with the HTML used to create it so it can easily be copy and pasted into any article.
Please note that this tool is still in beta and as such more options are planned along with visual improvements. Please send an email to evenflow58@gmail.com if you notice any bugs.

FSU v UVA Game 2 thread
After 2 extra inning losses in a row FSU takes the field to try and change their luck. I'll try to keep you updated through here and my twitter account (@evenflow58).
Football Study Hall
TN uses a bunch of Football Outsiders statistics in predicting and reviewing football games. Bill Connelly does a good bit of work with FO/college and Rock M Nation (SB Mizzou site) and is now running the Football Study Hall.
It looks like Mr Connelly will be running over the basics of the stats that will be used by smart people. I would suggest taking a look.

Richmond Seminole Club
The Richmond Seminole Club is Re-establishing itself. It will be meeting at a member's house on August 21. I've also attached the facebook page link for those interested.
Seminoles Bring in the Numbers in Bowl Ratings Game
Apparently people like to watch FSU play in middling bowl games. Sure the Bobby Bowden retirement and match up against JoPa helped but I don't understand why non-Seminole fans would be watching these games.
Should I root for FSU this weekend?
In my endless quest to cause pain to myself I've read all I can find about the FSU/USF game. In my reading I stumbled across AC's mailbag and this question in particular.
Trey (Orlando) writes: So how are school officials and decision makers viewing Bowden’s future? Is there any talk around Tallahassee about it? I love Bowden, but it may be time. Do you have an opinion on this matter?
Andrew Carter: I knew this question would be coming this week. Here’s the deal, Trey: I think we’re in a holding pattern at this point. Certainly, the 2-2 start has raised significant questions about the direction of this program. I think people thought that, worst case, FSU would be 2-2 right now. Well, the worst case has happened. If that continues, then there will be all sorts of questions about Bowden’s immediate future. And there are now, to an extent. But the thing is, FSU can still right the ship. It can still win the Atlantic Division, play for the ACC title, go to a BCS bowl, etc. But if the Seminoles lose this weekend, it could interesting – and ugly – in Tallahassee. As for my opinion, I do have one, but I’m waiting to see what happens this weekend.
After the jump I'll try and explain myself a bit better.
Evenflow's Football Axiom #1
Unless you play a base 3-4 DO NOT only rush 3 players on 3rd and long.
What About Bob?
In the wake of FSU picking up its 10th commitment (Holmes Onwukaife) I began to think about the importance of the new efforts in FSU’s recruiting. Most of the praise goes to Fisher and Coley, and rightfully so, but Bob LaCivita should get an assist here. As you may or may not remember LaCivita was hired in ’07 to the position of Football Director of Player Personnel, a position he previously held at NCState and, more recently, UF. LaCivita’s job entails overseeing administrative duties relating to recruiting and assisting on day-to-day football activities.
More after the jump.
Friday Roundtable: Just desserts looming for fluffy schedulers?
Nice article on Dr Saturday concerning the lack of high caliber hot steamy BCS on BCS action. I put in my two cents.
The Ultimate Guide to NFL Defense
Nice article focused on 3-4 and 4-3 front seven theories. Also includes discussion on the Tampa-2 which mentions Derrick Brooks and Ernie Simms.
Sac bunt question
As we all know a sac bunt is not worth much unless you need just one run. I'm watching the OSU/UGA game and OSU has cashed in on a few sac bunts. One was actually an E-1 so they had runners on the corner. Just curious about the responses to the following question.
Jon Kreft to FSU...probably
It looks like Jon Kreft will sign with FSU again per Andrew over at the Sentinal.
Noles lose to Cavs
I wish I could tell you that Andy fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but prison is no fairy-tale world.
-Red, Shawshank Redemption
Is anybody hoping we lose the first game we play in the ACC tournament?
I promise I'm not crazy...mostly
