Pokalfinale tactics: one-time desperation or sign of things to come?

Pep Guardiola obviously came into the Pokalfinale with some extreme constraints on team-sheet selection: missing Schweinsteiger, Thiago, Alaba, Mandzukic; Ribery announced as unable to start or...

Why Earl as a priority makes sense

Immediately after the Super Bowl win discussion turned to keeping the Seahawks' nascent dynasty together, and Ian Rapaport reported that they would prioritize Earl Thomas over Richard Sherman for...

How to keep and use all our 2Bs

I agree with the general sentiment that at least one of Franklin or Ackley will be moved but I wanted to see if there was some way we could viably keep and use all of Cano, Franklin, Ackley,...

Marshawn Lynch's resiliency

This was inspired by reading this Bill Barnwell piece on Grantland, which looks at the NFL-wide decline in rushing this year, and profiles each back who has lost at least 0.5 YPC over last year....

Larry Beinfest available as GM?

Apparently Jeffrey Loria has sidelined his entire front office and is making all baseball decisions by himself. Peter Gammons also reports Beinfest may be on the outs. One of the few defenses I've seen for keeping Jack Z around is that we don't know if there are any better GMs out there to replace him--Beinfest is certainly a guy I would want to take a run at if his contract in Miami is terminated.

A thought about Brady Quinn

Remember when Quinn was signed and all the positives spoken about him (by Pete and John, others) were regarding his work ethic (both in the weight room and in the film room), not anything to do...

Projecting the DL rotation/filling remaining holes

We have some exciting additions (Bennett and Avril) and some open questions (will Branch return? if not who replaces him?) on the DL. I thought I'd look at snap counts (found via Football Outsiders)...

Lillard's physical comparisons

Based on all the stuff going around comparing Damien to Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, etc., I decided to look back at combine measurements (here) and see how he lined up with them (plus who else...

Did we miss out in amnesty auctions (with poll)?

Looking at recently amnestied big-men to see whether Blazers should have entered bids for any of them.

PA Pass Defense

Football Outsiders just released their numbers on defense vs. PA and non-PA passes for last season. Seahawks were best in the league vs. play-action (and only Texans are close), while only average without play-action. Since we tied for 3rd-highest % of play-action attempts against, performance on these plays is responsible for most of the teams success in pass defense last season. My first thought would be to give the credit mostly to ET's instincts and recovery speed, plus our big CBs' press coverage throwing off slow-developing routes, but I wonder if there's something about our pass rush that made it better on play-action. The average team gets a fair bit worse on PA passes, while we got a *lot* better.
