Tough Question's

I find this article by Ed Buchette interesting from a number of angles. One is that BL really talks up how super it is to be a champion on Tomlin's team.  He indicates that he would be silly not to consider any fair offer from the Steelers to remain in the mix as the back up QB. Sure he wants the chance to start but he also knows that the "grass is not always greener". He seems to have fallen in love with being a Steeler and can you blame him?

The Steelers are currently flush with capable, winning QB's and have arguably the toughest, winningest QB in the league as their leader. Not a bad situation to be in considering that some teams clearly lack winners behind center. So what do the Steelers do here? Do they need to keep 3 QB's? I say yes, but which three?

Batch has been a huge asset to this team during his seven years with the squad and can probably still get it done at age 34 if forced to start.  It is widely accepted that Batch is a consumate team player, a real pro. He wants to play, the Steelers want him to stay so he probably gets inked. It's a done deal right? My primary concern: I wonder that since Batch's playing days are winding down at what point does he become a liability? If both Batch and Leftwich stay, whose #2.

Schematically, Leftwich is a better fit for this offense. If he would be happy to step into Batch's role as the long term BU to BB then the Steelers should seriously consider locking him in as the #2.

DD is a project who by all accounts is worth keeping. He may develop into a top notch starter some day. Nevertheless, he seems to be the odd man out here. Even though he probaly wouldn't bring much in a trade, should the Steelers consider trading him?

Your thoughts.

Captain #7

Great article in the Gazette on the maturation of Big Ben. Not a big surprise because this has been discussed recently, but character and personality are a part of the game that is not always evident, or understood even by teamates, let alone fans. It reads as though Taylor was genuinely surprised and impressed by his star quarterback reaching out to him. The gesture is just another thing that indicates to me that Ben's recent monster contract came at the right time, not only in terms of his play on the field, but as his develoment as a person.

Drafting #7 ranks as one the great personell moves by the proud franchise. He is experienced and proven as a player, and mature enough to handle what it all means (the big contract, gifted athlete, solid teamate and character) means. If that is possible? After all, BIG ben is making, BIG time money.

Man, he is special. As a fan, he is becoming one of my favorite players. No doubt he's gonna make a great captain and likely remain one into the foreseeable future. Go Steelers.
