I used to be the consumate beer leaguer, once succeeding in playing goal for two teams in the same league. Then came marriage, five sons and a master's degree, during which time the raccoons ate my goalie gear.

Statistically, my best year on the ice came in a men's league when we put together a team from university: I think we went undefeated and I gave up only 26 goals the entire year. The truth of the tale is, however, that we were dominant and I froze my nipples off while surrendering those 26 goals on what was probably a grand total of 50 shots while playing the absolute worst hockey of my life. I remember one night in Memramcook it was so cold the water in my bottle froze over.

The flip side is that the best hockey I ever played was in a beer league which saw me surrender a grand total of 8 goals in our playoff series,. You'll note that there was only one series, and that's because we lost the best of seven in five games. That's right, in five games I gave up 8 goals and lost four games.

The irony of these two stories sums up my entire existence.

Burke does Basketball

I bet you didn’t know Brian Burke was a basketball man.  In roundball there’s an old axiom that 'you can’t teach tall', and Burkie seems to believe it.  Looking at the players the Leafs are...
