What can we learn from Preseason anyways?

I don't think I'm the only person that was caught off guard by the Bengals season. This team is exactly what it wasn't last season. Dominating run game and Dominating Defense. But when did this happen? Why didn't we see this comming?

At the end of last season, we did see the Bengals defense comming together. But there were still questions about the ability to rush the passer. And we didnt know Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph were going to have breakout seasons together.

So maybe your that guy saying, " I told you they would have a top 10 Defense". Ok, but I bet you didn't think these Bengals would have a top 10 running game. Not with this offensive line full of rejects.

Then along comes preseason, and the Bengals lose Carson after the first week. What do these Bengals do? They turn to their Defense and Running game, They turn into your 2009 Cincinnati Bengals. They go into Foxboro to take on the Big Bad Patriots, and shut down the Pats offense. Cincinnati's Defense held New England to 6 points by pressuring Tom Brady and covering Randy Moss and Wes Welker. The Bengals defense recorded 4 sacks, and only allowed 7 of 17 on 3rd Downs. But it was only preseason, and we didnt think much of it.

The next game vs the Rams was one that the Bengals expected to win. Instead our Bengals turn the ball over 4 times on offense. Generate zero pressure, couldnt get a turnover for the Defense, and commited 8 penalties. Final Score: 24-21. The 2009 Bengals drop a game they were picked to win. Sound familiar?

Last preseason game, Indianapolis Colts. The gold standard for an NFL team. We would like to keep up with these guys, to see where we stand as a team. Well we didnt keep up with the Colts, we blew past them. The Bengals ran wild for 296 yards on the ground. It didn't matter who was in the backfield, as four Back's gained at least 40 yards. The Defense held the Colts to 7 points, had 6 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 205 total yards. The Bengals won 38-7.

Maybe I'm searching for something, or maybe we watched this team grow before our eyes. This team didnt come out of nowhere, and we shouldn't be suprised. So the next time somebody tells you "Preseason dosn't mean anything". You can tell them about the 2009 Cincinnati Bengals.

Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson was en route to Cincinnati on Monday and, barring a last-minute breakdown, he expects to sign with the AFC North-leading Bengals, a source familiar with the negotiations told ESPN's Michael Smith.

Johnson's deal is expected to be for the prorated league minimum.

The Bengals, along with several other teams, first expressed interest in Johnson last week as depth behind Cedric Benson, who suffered a hip injury in Sunday's 18-12 victory at Pittsburgh.

If Johnson learns the offense quickly, it stands to reason he could be active for the Bengals on Sunday against the Raiders.

Bengals Power Rankings

This isnt your coventional "Power Rankings" between the best NFL teams. This one is the Rankings of the most important Bengals players on a week to week basis.

1. Carson Palmer - I dont think anybody will overtake Palmer at #1 anytime soon. 5 TDs vs the Bears only help his #1 spot.

2. Cedric Benson - Leading the league in yards, but his most important games will be the next two vs Balt and Pitt. If he can run like he did in the previous matchups, then Bengals will be ok.

3. Chad Ochocinco - After 10 catches vs the Bears. Chad is back to being Carson's #1 target.

4. Leon Hall - Leon is having a Pro Bowl season, and Hall had a huge week vs the Bears. (2 ints)

5. Andrew Whitworth - Some people werent how Whitworth would play at full time LT. But he has kept Palmer Clean and Benson running.

6. Johnathan Joseph - I used to question Joseph's hands, then he had 3 ints in 3 weeks. Then dropped ints in back to back weeks vs the Texans and Bears.

7. Domata Peko - Leader on the Defensive Line. Peko may not be a pass rusher, but he gets everybody lined up correctly and he demands double teams in the run game.

8. Kyle Cook - Maybe Cook should higher? After seeing what a bad center can do to your offense. Kyle Cook has played in a way that we could have never imagined.

9. Dhani Jones - Still the leader of the Defense, his smarts and play recognition out him in position to make tackles.

10. Kevin Huber - After playing some of the best PR men in the NFL so far this season, Huber has been great keeping the field postion in our favor.

****** showed promise for the Bengals and is able to fit a variety of schemes, as Cincinnati will use both a 4-3 and 3-4 during the course of a game. He looks like a future starter. He is both athletic and stout, but could stand to get a little stronger. His hand usage still needs work as well, and ****** is somewhat of a raw player at this early stage of his career. But, he gets off the ball well, gives good effort and can play low and be disruptive.

Offensive Lines in the AFC North

With most people agreeing that the Bengals 2009 season will be decided by the success of the Offensive line, James Walker from ESPN's AFC North Blog asks his readers to decide which line in the AFC North is worse, Steelers or Bengals.

There are too many reasons for me to say the Bengals have the better line. For one I am a Bengals, and I'm drunk from the offseason Kool-aid, and somebody made it a double when the Bengals offensive line played very well last Friday vs the Saints. But in reality do the Bengals have the worst line in the AFC north? Not at all. and im a "stat" guy so heres my case for the Bengals.

Bengals: In the 65 games the Carson Palmer has been under center. the Bengals have allowed 101 sacks. thats an average of 1.55 sacks per game. But since 2004 ( point the finger at the 2008 line, and Fitzpatrick) The Bengals have allowed a total of 156 sacks. 2.0 sacks a game. Palmer gets sacked every 22.8 dropbacks. Last season with Fitzpatrick at QB, they allowed a sack every 10.1 dropbacks. In 2007 the Palmer was only sacked every 33.8 dropbacks. When it comes to running the ball, Cincinnati hasnt had a full time RB in the past 2 years, and it shows in the stat sheet. The last 2 seasons the Bengals average 96.1 yards per game. From 2004-2006, when Rudi Johnson was the lead back, Cincinnati averaged 113.3 yards per game. 3.88 per carry over the past 5 seasons.

Steelers: In the 72 games that Big Ben has played. He's been sacked 192 times. Average of 2.56 sacks per game. Since 2004 Pittsburgh has given up a total of 213 sacks. The Steelers allow a sack every 10.7 dropbacks. The most in the AFC North by far. When it comes to run blocking, the Steelers are the best. Through the last 78 games, they averaged 131.7 yards per game, and 4.0 yards per rush.

The Browns and Ravens havent had a steady QB. So im just going to use the same time frame. 2004-2008. (78 games)

Browns: Cleveland has given up 184 sacks. 2.36 per game. And a sack every 16 dropbacks. But since the Browns drafted Joe Thomas, and signed Stienbach they have been giving up only 1.34 sacks per game. and a Sack every 24.5 dropbacks. Best in the AFC North. The running game has the same trend as the passing game. The past 2 seasons, Cleveland has been solid at Run Blocking. They averaged 109.3 yards per game with J. Thomas and Stienbach. But before then they averaged 93.6 yards per game, and in the 78 game span, the Browns average 3.88 yards per carry. (same as the Bengals)

Ravens: Baltimore has given up 166 sacks in the same 78 game span, and are allowing 2.12 sacks a game. Thats a sacks per 16.9 dropbacks. The Ravens actually pass more than you would expect. They have passed the ball the 2nd most in the AFCN. and in 2006 they allowed a sack in only every 30.8 dropbacks. The Ravens have been very consistant in the run game, averaging 148.5 yards per game last season. and 118.5 over the past 5 seasons. To my suprise, Baltimore has the lowest yards per carry in the AFCN, with a 3.84 average.

In the Passing game it looks like the Browns have sured up thier pass protection the past 2 seasons, thanks to Joe Thomas and Eric Stienbach. I would say they have the best pass protecting Offensive Line in the AFC North. But the Bengals come in 2nd place. With Carson under center, the Bengals pass protection is just that much better. The Ravens are in 3rd based on how much they pass the ball and the talent they have on the line. Steelers come in last place. Even though I don't believe its all their offensive line's fault. Big Ben gets sacked because he holds the ball for too long and is always looking to make plays. he does avoid maybe 15 sacks a year though. So maybe it evens itself out.

When it comes to the running game, The Steelers are by far the best run blocking team. I used the same stretch of time. 2004-2008, and Pittsburgh has been one of the best rushing teams in the entire league. Pittsburgh has a great yards per carry average, and they stick with the run game. Baltimore comes in 2nd, even though thier average isnt the highest in the division. They stick with running the ball and it shows. Im going with the Bengals as the 3rd best run blocking offensive line. Even though the Browns have been solid the past 2 seasons. I dont like their RBs anymore than i like the Bengals. So with Clevelands lack of passing game, it should also hurt their ability to run the football. Much like the Bengals last season.

Are we expecting too many players to break out?

Lets face it, the Bengals were 4-11-1 last season for a reason. They were a bad football team. I'm not going to get into the Carson Palmer effect. The Bengals are better with Carson Palmer thats for sure, but how much better? Expectations are high this time of year for every team in the NFL. Its no different for fans of Bengaldom. I keep hearing fans say well this guy is going to be better or this guy is in his 2nd season with the team. But for this team to have a better record than last year, a few players are going to have to answer those questions marks and have breakout seasons. i'm not even talking about the rookies. I'm looking at the players who have been on the roster for at least 1 season. Theres a lot of players that need to break out or come into their own for the Bengals to be a better team this season. Not all of them will step up, but lets hope most of them do. Heres a look at a few of the players that make the 09 Bengals full of potential.

Cedric Benson - He played so well in the last 3 games of the 08 season. Carson Palmer tells us to pick Benson in our fantasy leagues. While other "experts" say the bengals will regret signing him. Benson never reached his potential in Chicago, and now we hope he can do it Cincinnati.

Chris Henry - The guy has talent. The Bengals havent really been able to count on him, but Henry looks to be on the correct path. Again Palmer swears Henry will have a breakout season. but with the depth at WR and the return of Chad, how much can Henry actually "breakout"?

Andre Caldwell - Just about the same situation as Chris Henry. Sitting behind 2 established WRs. But Caldwell can play the Slot and Return Kicks. Caldwell will have to breakout this season as the main return man and the guy that must fill the shoes of T.J. in the slot.

Pat Sims - Sims will come into his 2nd year as a starter. So he should be automatically better right? I mean it is his 2nd season, and IF he breaks out, this Bengals defense could reach new heights.

Keith Rivers - All signs point to Rivers comming into his own and being that player the Bengals need. Fans will say Now we will have Keith for the entire season, that will make us better. Sure, as long as Rivers takes that next step. Brandon Johnson played well last season. Rivers needs to play better.

Jonathan Joseph - With the skills to be one of the better CBs in the league, Joseph hasn't broken out yet. But with the hopes of a improved pass rush, and Joseph being healthy an entire season. That right there should make him better right?

Chinedum Ndukwe - If this guy could play a full season, he could make the pro bowl. Ndukwe might be the only true play maker on the Bengals defense. If the Defense wants to take the next step, they need him to have his breakout season this year.

If all of these player come into their own and have the breakout seasons we all hope they do, then the Bengals will make the playoffs. But is this too much to ask? Can all of these players step up? Will all of them step up? Most likely they all wont breakout. But who dosnt love offseason hopes?
