If he does decide the undergo surgery this will likely lesson some of his appeal in the FA market and if he can't get a deal done with St. Louis (as evidenced by his Franchis tag this year), with his connections to Singletary, I could see SF as a landing place for him.

I like Goldson but I'd love to see Atogwe in Cherry Red and Gold!

I think it might be good to take a step back and appreciate how far we've come since 2005, Mike Nolan's first year and the overall level of talent on our roster now.

NFL.com is letting users submit their own rankings which they'll then reveal on NFL Network's Total Access. Here are my rankings, I had the Niners in the top half, barely, at 16. The Cardinals are ranked 17th only because I think they'll slip this season and finish below the Niners despite their young talent. Submit your own rankings or post your own...or don't, I don't care.

Why Not Tyson Jackson

I was thinking today, reading through a lot of mock drafts, about Tyson Jackson. He's touted as the best pure 3-4 end in the draft and is most often slated to fall somwhere between picks 12-16 to the Broncos, Texans and Chargers. considering that the Niners are picking only 2 slots ahead of Denver and DE is arguably a need I was kind of surprised when I realized I haven't, in all of the pre-draft coverage, heard Jackson's name attached to the Niners even once. If we drafted him presumably we'd put him at LE and slide Balmer and/or Sopoaga over to NT meaning that next year either Sopoaga, Franklin or Evans' job would be in jeopardy. That doesn't seem to bad to me...

I know next to nothing about this kid though, would he be a good fit? Any LSU fans want to chime in? Anyone have a theory why the Niners wouldn't take him besides DL numbers?

There are a number of good, or at least formerly high touted FAs still out on the market. I'm not suggesting the Niners sign any of them but I thought it would be interesting to see what kind of a team could be built on them and only them.

QB- Rex Grossman

(Backup: J.P. Losman)

RB- Shaun Alexander

RB- Rudi Johnson

(Backup: Deuce McCallister)

WR- Marvin Harrison

WR- Torry Holt

(Backups: Plaxico Burress, Koren Robinson, Lance Moore (RFA))

TE- Bubba Franks

(Backup: Mark Bruener)

OL- Jahri Evans

OL- Chris Naeole

OL- Harvey Dahl

OL- Jonas Jennings

OL- Jon Runyan

(Backups: Trai Essex, Pete Kendall, Fred Miller)

K - John Kasay

P - Hunter Smith

DL- Vonnie Holiday

DL- Dewayne Robertson

DL- Jerome McDougle

DL- La'Roi Glover

(Backups: Jason Babin, John Engelberger, Kevin Carter)

LB- Marcus Washington

LB- Napoleon Harris

LB- Donnie Edwards

(Backups: Willie McGinest, Rocky Boiman)

DB- Cortland Finnegan (RFA)

DB- Chris McCallister

DB- Roy Williams

DB- Rodney Harrison

(Backups: Atari Bigby (RFA), Dre' Bly, Deltha O'Neal, Patrick Surtain, Sam Madison, Lawyer Milloy, Adam Jones, Ken Lucas, Dexter Jackson)

Sure they have some issues, but there's a former MVP, Super Bowl MVP, and a bunch of 1st rounders in this team...
