Boise State Pro Day

I stopped by Boise State's Pro Day that was open to the public yesterday and wanted to mention just a couple things that I observed. Doug Martin is huge! He is a walking brick wall. He had a 38 inch vertical and it was quite impressive to see all that power in his explosive release off the ground. Doug impressed in the pro agility drill and the "L" drill as well, although I don't have any official times. Aaron Burks had a 38.5 inch vertical and ran a 4.38 40-yard dash. Geraldo Hiwat also ran a 4.38 40-yard dash. He seemed to be the most impressive in the broad jump and nearly eclipsed 11 feet. He seemed pretty disappointed that he didn't. Doug didn't run the 40 (at least I didn't see him do it). I heard Burks say that someone ran a 4.32 40-yard dash. I'm not sure who it was but Jamar Taylor was pretty dang fast. Hazen Moss was pretty impressive. His vertical may have been one of the three highest (if not the highest) on the team. He also looked pretty fast in the 40 but I didn't hear anything official. Tyrone Crawford is a beast and will probably manhandle several QBs this season. If anyone else was there or saw anything, post about it below.

Per Chad Cripe in Saturday's Heisman Trophy blog, "Nike has another big uniform reveal scheduled for Tuesday at Cowboys Stadium. Boise State is one of four schools that will get 2011 Nike ProCombat System of Dress uniforms. The teams are expected to wear those uniforms in their bowl games."

So maybe this is what the white Pro Combat helmets were for. Will we see those or some other variation? Are the uniforms going to look like the ones for the VT game only darker since we are the home team?

Anyone willing to photoshop what they think the uniforms will look like? We'll find out tomorrow for sure.

If E. Gordon Gee thinks his mighty Buckeyes and sweater vest loving coach are that much better than Boise State or TCU then why don't we all send him a little Thanksgiving email telling him to man up and schedule the Broncos!

One Bronco Nation Under God Bill Hancock's side of the conversation with Frank Beamer after the Boise State game

"Hey Frank, it's Bill.

Listen you really dropped the ball on Monday. We really needed you to beat Boise State to end their shot at a national championship.

No I'm not going to get you fired. But I need you to listen closely. We have to revert to Plan B.

Yes I heard what Tyrod said. I agree. They didn't beat you.

Look, Plan B is going to take place.

I get it Frank. You hate them. I'll make sure you don't have to schedule Boise State again.

Really Frank? You're crying? C'mon, I need you to pay attention.

We are implementing Plan B.

Yes, I know how you feel... this is better than revenge.

When you play James Madison this weekend you need to lose the game.

Listen. This will immediately diminish their victory against you. The best way to discredit your team is to lose to the worst team on your schedule.

I know. I agree. There's a reason why Duke has a good basketball team. But the FCS is pretty bad too.

I know, but that was several years ago when Boise played in that division.

Listen. You have to keep the game respectable. Don't get blown out. It will be obvious. Play tough and barely lose. During the game and immediately after we will post breaking news concerning the defeat through ESPN. That way all the analysts will have time to talk about Boise State playing a weak schedule during the remainder of the day. By the end of the day the entire nation will have forgotten about Boise State. They'll drop like a rock in the polls. And the best part is that they don't even play anyone this weekend.

I hear that smile now.

Listen. A couple other things go into Plan B.

I'm going to talk to the other ACC teams that are in the Top 25. We need to coordinate our losses to make everyone think that the ACC is weak this year.

Frank don't be stupid. You're not the SEC.

I'm going to talk to Miami, Florida State, and Georgia Tech too. It should be pretty easy to get Jacory Harris to throw some key picks and we've been hyping Ponder just for fun. Also, we'll make sure you all beat each other up in conference play too.

But listen. Here's the good news... you can lose four games and still make it to a BCS game. Boise will go undefeated and we'll make them play against TCU again. It's the perfect storm. Our system will still treat them like kings and we don't have to worry about them humiliating anymore elite teams.

See, I knew you would like that. Now go get them.

No Frank. You still need to lose."

Probably the best 2009 highlight video I've seen on the web. Gotta love seeing Kaeperlegs take a beating over and over again... plus the Fiesta Bowl highlights are awesome. The slow-mo pummeling of Andy Dalton by KDub is something beautiful!

One Bronco Nation Under God Crippling the BCS

BSU Guru's recent post on The Most Important Game in College Football History has got me thinking a lot about what would happen if Nebraska won.

I think I could sacrifice a BCS game for our beloved Broncos if it means that they get an equal shot at the national championship.  He's right in saying that a Nebraska victory on Saturday could really screw up the BCS and even start to cripple it.

Think about this: Right now, BCS teams are forced to schedule OOC cupcakes out of fear of losing one OOC game before their "tough" conference schedule starts. Meanwhile, weaker BCS conference teams and the non-BCS alike are forced to schedule tougher games to enhance their SOS and prove their worth. This is all done in hopes of just getting to a BCS game.  Meanwhile, Boise State has relied upon a mediocre schedule in hopes of being the only undefeated non-BCS team.  It has worked in its favor before, but as we can see from last year, it doesn't always happen.

Now, I believe that this is starting to level the playing field in college football. The non-BCS teams are more competitive (for the most part) because they are starting to play tougher teams and typically when the competition increases, teams improve.

In college basketball (I don’t know how well this works… comparing basketball to football), the teams that do the best in the NCAA tournament are typically the teams that have endured the toughest competition throughout the season. Sure, there are Cinderellas, but the Final Four is typically composed of those teams who pushed themselves hard during the season. They may not have won every tough game during the season, but they came out of those losses knowing what to improve upon. And they got better. I am willing to bet that the teams with the higher RPI going into the tournament have consistently outperformed those with lower RPIs.  The teams that don’t challenge themselves during the season typically lose that big game early on in the NCAA tournament.

Now, Boise State’s football team has a similar problem in my opinion. They haven’t challenged themselves consistently in the past (the WAC doesn’t help), and they have lost several bowl games once the competition steps up. However, they are starting to step up the competition with their scheduling (playing Oregon St. and Va. Tech next year) and they are consistently improving.

With the playing field leveled now, there has to be a playoff. This will force a "survival of the fittest" attitude with scheduling. Teams won’t do well in the playoff unless they have truly tested themselves during the season. The current BCS teams would schedule tougher OOC games so that they don’t drop that first round game to Boise State or Utah or /cough, cough/ BYU. The current non-BCS teams would also schedule tougher games to overcome the competition their weak conferences produce. Not only would this make for some great college football games during the season, it would also produce ever more intriguing match-ups with each week of a post season playoff.  Just think about how exciting college football could really be!

The only problem is the playoff would have to include enough teams to give conference champs and the top at-large teams an equal shot at the national championship.  Those who perform better during the season will have higher tournament rankings and the easiest path to the championship, making the non-BCS teams potential long shots to make it to the championship game.  But a long shot is better than no shot for our Broncos.

What do you all think?

Orlando Scandrick doesn't claim Boise State.

So tonight during the Cowboys/Giants game they did the little video intros that they always do during Sunday Night Football and while every player stated the college they attended, Orlando Scandrick claimed Los Alamitos High School instead of Boise State. I felt like he was ashamed of Boise State by being the only player to claim their high school. What are your thoughts?

Oregon plays "Ring Around the Rosie" and "Simon Says"

The funny thing is that some of the players got caught cheating.

Check out the first edition of The Blue! It is being mailed to BAA members for free and available to purchase at the Boise State scrimmage on Friday. Some of the players will be sticking around afterwards to sign the magazine (ie. Kyle Wilson - cover page monster). I heard that the players are only allowed to sign the magazine or a poster bought from the Bronco Shop.

It will also be available at local retail outlets real soon if you don't get the chance to make it to the scrimmage.

Enjoy!

Does anyone have an ESPN Insider account and would like to share the remainder of the linked article about Boise State?

One Bronco Nation Under God Graham Watson Roast/Bandwagon Page

So we all know that Graham Watson is completely full of ... well a lot of crap.  This page is dedicated to all the dumb things she says throughout the offseason and into the regular season.

Please post your favorite Graham Watson quotes.  We will track them, have a history of her bandwagonness, and use them to completely make fun of her - because we all know that if it isn't Oregon that will knock off Boise State, it's Nevada.  And if it's not Nevada then it's La Tech.  And it's not La Tech it's Fresno... and I'm just going to stop before it gets to Idaho.
