AZ Snake Pit Dustin Nippert et al

Here is another couple of "superstars" that I told Jim,  shoe shine et.  al. was not gonna make it ......... and did suck.

Again, .just like CJ.......and Ed-it's Gon.....  I was chastised by Jim's snakepit,  the DPPB, website and shoe shine on these two as well.

It has been a long time since I logged onto this site and feel that Jim should be fair enough to allow this post to stand........ Anyway... let us review a couple of issues that may have been forgotten. Ed-is-Gon. yup... that pitcher that was maybe... kinda...sorta... held in such high regard is now working at the car wash?  And what has been up with that superstud Conor Jackson?  Well...of course he is tearing up MLB pitching and playing solid defense.

see the links below for some his..tor..e..

bye for now...and....before I forget...ask shoe shine, or whatever his name is, to chime in. thanks.

The Contrarian: Billy Beane is Merely Adequate

"The A's have put the finishing touches on a trade to net them All World outfielder Matt Holliday. So far the reaction from the baseball analyst community has been predictable: near-universal praise. And why shouldn't it be? Godman Billy Beane made the deal, after all. How Godman is he? Well, with Moneyball optioned for film, Brad Pitt is likely to play Beane. The man deals shirtless? We hope so! AZ Snake Pit roster

Currently, we only have 33 names on the 40 man roster. There may be a few that are added shortly but 7 open spots seems a little high.

Maybe we will be looking to pick up a player or two in the upcoming Rule 5 draft?

AZ Snake Pit Why are we so right handed???

If JB is such great a GM then why do we have a team that is so heavy on the RHB side??

If we lose O-Dawg we will probably get even more right handed.  Trade CJ for what ever we can get for some LHB.He's a poor defensive 1b and ...at best...an average defensive lf that can't hit more than 12-15 bombs.

Approx. 75% of our PAs will be against RHPs.

We neeed LHB's

Great roster contruction...JB.

All RHBs.  give me a freaking break!!!

AZ Snake Pit Edgar vs. Max et. al.

Max was sent to Tucson yesterday to make room for Buckner. We needed a fresh arm due to the work load that our 'pen has encountered lately.

Taking into account EdGon's performance and the lack of flexibility that we have due to him being out of options, how much value does he really bring to our club?

We have  Buckner, Scherzer, Petit, Peguero among others, that have options and can be rotated between Tucson and the big club. Their YTD performance is at least equal to if not better than EdGon's and the flexibility they allow enables us to keep fresh arms in the 'pen on a regular basis.

If the FO could get anything of value for Edgar, I would advocate trading him. I really don't feel that he'll ever be a highly effective pitcher especially at the BOB.

AZ Snake Pit Melvin expects defense to improve

Geez, let's hope so. We sure have had more than our share of defensive miscues so far this year. And many of ours have been very damaging. I wouldn't be surprised if we lead the league in unearned runs. From the article

Only four teams in the National League have a higher error total than the D-backs' 37.

The D-backs have tried a number of things to improve the defense, including having coaches bring different positions onto the field for work before batting practice, going so far as having a coach flip a pitch to the one hitting rather than just hitting fungoes.

I'm always a supporter of practice but it sure looks like we could use more.

Also an interesting subject regarding the fan base...

According to Nielsen Media Research, from March 31 - May 22, FSN Arizona was the top-rated television network in Phoenix on the nights it televised a D-backs game, outdistancing all four broadcast stations in the market (7 - 11 p.m., Monday - Sunday). An average of 90,310 households in the Valley were watching FSN Arizona on nights it has a D-backs game during primetime hours. ...

AZ Snake Pit Are baseball stats true science?

From today's game thread...

There are exponentially more variables to baseball then there are to coin tosses.

Baseball stats are not the law of gravity, true probability theory ( ie. a coin toss, a dice roll, etc) or physics.

To compare baseball stats to true science is, IMO, a very far stretch.

I do believe that the "truest" that baseball stats can come to reality  is platoon stats but they are still far from perfect.

AZ Snake Pit Byrnes to DL: Romero gets the call

PHOENIX (AP)—The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed left fielder Eric Byrnes on the 15-day disabled because of sore hamstrings.

The injury has bothered the Arizona outfielder since spring training, manager Bob Melvin said when the move was announced Tuesday, and the decision was made that rest was required. Byrnes had struggled at the plate, hitting just .219 with six home runs and 23 RBIs. Alex Romero was recalled from Triple-A Tucson to take Byrnes’ spot on the roster.

Link

With the return of Tracy and the addition of Romero, we sure got a lot more left handed the last two days.

AZ Snake Pit Ground rules

Ground rules in baseball are always important to understand. I'm somewhat new to this forum and would like to understand the ground rules at "this park." At times, it seems that snark directed specifically toward other posters is not only allowed but encouraged. Is that the case?

What are the "ground rules?"

Thanks

Here's an article about our team's philosophy regarding stealing bases.

"We want the reward to outweigh the risk," Gibson said.

The risk side of the equation is cluttered with factors, including the time it takes a pitcher to deliver a pitch, the catcher's arm strength, a pitcher's move to first, the count, the situation, a runner's technique and confidence factor, and everything in between.

AZ Snake Pit Rate our defense

We have given up a lot of unearned runs and not all miscues show up that way. So, let's take a look at our D. I'm going to list our starters based upon a scale from 1-10  according to what I feel is expected from a NL starter at their position. I'm going to use things such as: range, glove work, footwork, arm strength, arm accuracy (are they throwing to the most beneficial spot on the field), how many hits, extra bases, runs do they save/cost us. I'm going to use starters for now but feel free to use bench guys as well. My scale is based upon what I see them do on the field.

C Snydes  8.5

1b CJ 2.5

2b O-Dawg 9.5

3b Reynolds 4.5

ss Wolf 4.5

LF Bam Bam 9.0

CF CY 8.0

RF J-Up 3.5

I'm interested in everyone's opinion so please chime in. Again, I'm using what I see to determine my ratings. Let's try to use visuals as best we can.

Thanks

Bob Costas special on HBO

I'm not sure who all has access to HBO but there is a real cool and professionally done special on HBO right now that covers the internet (et. al.) coverage about sports. My bottom line on the program is pretty much " how much value is there in this snarkey BS that happens on blogs regularly and what value do these type of posts really contibute." There are other topics discussed. Check it out and add your thoughts.

AZ Snake Pit Double plays started by 1b

During today's game thread, we were trying to find the number of double plays started by 1bs.

This link  shows that, for '07, the top 10 in the NL were:

2007 Pujols Albert STL NL 1B 30
2007 Gonzalez Adrian SD NL 1B 22
2007 LaRoche Adam PIT NL 1B 21
2007 Helton Todd COL NL 1B 18
2007 Howard Ryan J PHI NL 1B 16
2007 Delgado Carlos NYN NL 1B 14
2007 Loney James A LAN NL 1B 12
2007 Klesko Ryan SF NL 1B 11
2007 Young Dmitri WAS NL 1B 7
2007 Berkman Lance HOU NL 1B 7
2007 Jacobs Mike FLA NL 1B 7

CJ had 1 (about 1 every 870 innings) and Tony Clark had 4 (about 1 every 100 innings).

AZ Snake Pit Eric Byrnes' extension

OK gang, Bam Bam gets a lot of flack on this board so I thought that it would be appropriate to start a Bam Bam fanpost and possibly reduce some of the Byrnes controversy.

Here's my take...When we signed him, when you combine D, base running and hitting, he  was arguably one of the best LFs in the NL. Q's shoulder was cooked and he didn't even have the surgery yet. Who knows if Q is even going to be able to play, not only at all but at a ML level, at that point.  We had Scooter hanging around as a guy that hasn't proved jack as a major leaguer and is , what? about 28 years old? So, it was pretty much looking like either Bam Bam or Scooter at that point.

We had a good shot at being a competitive team but also had very young and, up to that point, unproven players at 1b, 3b, ss,CF and RF. Bam Bam got a three year deal at  10 per which was more favorable to the org then the Gary Mathews deal at 5/50.

This is far from an Ortiz type deal. IMO, if you pay quality players big money then that's OK but if you pay sucky players (Ortiz) big money then that sucks.

Bam Bam is a very solid LF.

Fire away.

AZ Snake Pit No progress on new deal for Hudson

There's been no movement between the Diamondbacks and Orlando Hudson on a contract for the 2009 season, and even the usually ebullient All-Star second baseman has nothing to say about it.

"I would love to stay here. I would definitely love to stay here," said Hudson, who was obtained by the D-backs after the 2005 season in the four-player trade that sent Troy Glaus to Toronto. "You can write that in big bold letters: I would love to stay here. Yeah. I love the community. I love the team. I love all of it."

Hudson is making $6.5 million this season, and he was recently angered when a local report was floated saying that he wanted $15 million a year to stay. Hudson said that report was false. He and Eric Byrnes are the veteran cogs on a young team.

I hope that they can come to an agreement. I would really like to see O-Dawg around for another 3 years.

AZ Snake Pit Max Scherzer to the big club

kishi posted this link in the gameday thread and SongBird broke the news. I thought that it deserved it's own fan post.

The two thoughts from Nick's article that I agree with are posted below.

Maybe they’re going to move him into the rotation and bump Edgar Gonzalez back to that swing role in the bullpen? That, to me, would seem like the most likely move.

But I think it’s important that he continues to develop as a starter. They might need him in the rotation next year or maybe even later this year. Having him throw inconsistent innings out of the pen isn’t going to allow him to further develop his change-up and slider. It’s not going to get his innings total up to the point where he could throw 180 innings if he’s in the rotation next year.

Miggy was called up and Romero optioned to Tucson today. I like that we have three catchers on the roster as we can now use Miggy as a PH and not have to worry about using our last catcher.

AZ Snake Pit Is Papa Grande mashed potatoes?

So far he has given up runs in three of his 6 appearances and now he has a ERA of 11.37.

In today's game he blew his second save of the year. Here's how it happened.

- J. Valverde relieved S. Chacon
- C. Snelling hit for C. Ruiz
- C. Snelling homered to deep right
- C. Utley hit by pitch
- R. Howard struck out swinging
- P. Burrell homered to deep right, C. Utley scored
- G. Jenkins struck out, reached on passed ball, on passed ball
- P. Feliz doubled to deep left, G. Jenkins scored

The PED Issue

The PED issue is: boring!!! I wouldn't doubt that more than 75% of the players were using something during it's peak. Give it a rest. The Mitchell report was crap and relied on very few sources, (non that were really origional) cost millions of dollars and hardly addressed the Commisioner's/owner's/GM's knowlege of the whole issue (like they didn't know). But, still concentrates on throwing a hand full of players under the bus. Can you say Oliver North?

LOB

I think: that the box scores are confusing some people regarding left on base figures. Many will show a LOB for each player and some have a LOB for the team. The LOBs for each player are not the same as LOBs for the team.
One example: let's say that it's the 1st inning and the lead off hitter reaches base. If the next three batters make outs without the lead off guy scoring then many box scores will list that as a LOB for batters 2-4 which would equal 3 LOB. But, actually there was only one team LOB, the lead off guy. I hope this helps.

That didn't take long.

Yahoo says that he'll be out 2-4 weeks. I'm hoping that we'll get to see the lead glover Hairston playing CF during the Padres visit to the BOB April 18-20. I think it would be interesing watching him play CF with the overhang and spacious outfield.

AZ Snake Pit Nipple traded to Texas

It looks like the AL will be suckling runs from Nipple in Texas.

It sounds like we didn't get much ...other than maybe a roster spot...out of this deal.

I can't say that I'm very disappointed to see him go. My guess is that Medders gets his spot on the 25 man.

The Diamondbacks shipped the struggling right-hander to the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor leaguer Jose Marte, a pitching prospect who will turn 25 next month but hasn't pitched above Class A.

In three minor league seasons, the reliever has a 4.29 ERA in 153 innings and appears to have control issues, walking 92 batters compared to 174 strikeouts.
