Women's Golf Maria Jose Uribe Takes Low Amateur Honors @ US Women's Open

In case you didn't catch the US Women's Open over the weekend, a fellow Bruin was holding her own against the field.

As noted on the main site, Maria Jose Uribe shot a 290 (-2) over the four days for the lowest score by an amateur.

Uribe, 18, became just the second amateur in U.S. Women's Open history to finish the tournament under par. She posted a four-round total of 290 (-2), thanks to three birdies on the inward nine. The sophomore-to-be began her day at four-under par, but after three bogeys and a 39 (+3) on the outward nine, she appeared in danger of finishing above par. She rallied with birdies at the 11th, 16th and 18th holes and completed a streak of four consecutive birdies on the 18th. She tied for 10th place with a final round score of 75 (+3).

Her prize: An exemption into next year's open, and next up on her summer vacation: The British Open. This is significant as Uribe will be

the first female amateur ever to compete in all four professional major championships.

Also, fellow Bruin Sydnee Michaels shot a 304 (+12) and former Bruin Guilia Sergas shot a 289 (-3.)

Watching the coverage, they kept asking Uribe why she wasn't going to defend her US Amateur Open title, which seemed incessant, and the announcers were bewildered that she wouldn't even consider it.

Congrats to all the Bruins on the links this past weekend!

Although he'll probably go in as a Red Wing, I will always remember that magical playoff run and the OV line.

Larionov and Edmonton Oiler Glenn Anderson were the only players named to the 2008 class for the Hockey Hall of Fame. Ray Scapinello was chosen under the category for referees and linesmen, and the late Ed Chynoweth was selected as a builder.

Read the article here in the SJ Merc.

Congrats to Igor!

Tonight on the National Spelling Bee (still on the West Coast until 10pm on ABC) I learned a brand new word! It totally fits the community college across town.

shamateurism:

Practice of treating certain athletes as non-professional so they are eligible for certain competitions while subsidizing them with illegal payments.

The second Mr. F and I heard that word, he said "cite: OJ Mayo." I said "cite: Reggie Bush."

You learn something new everyday.

From the What's Bruin blog over at the LA Times:

Pat Cowan's MRI shows damage to his left ACL and his medial meniscus. He will be reexamined when the swelling decreases
Ben Olson's X-rayshows a fracture in his right 5th metatarsal. It is possible that he may have a screw put in the bone. He will be sidelined 6-8 weeks.
At least they have time to heal before practice starts again in July, but then Neuheisel had a conference call about the QB situation, and added there's a chance Cowan may not be back for the season, but we'll just have to wait until the swelling goes down.

I won!

For those of you who get the Bruin Locker Room emails for Football and Basketball, every week they have a chance to win an autographed team poster. I won one week (and didn't even realize it, LOL.)

the full poster:

ATV's sig and part of KD's head:

shannon tevaga

the defense and bruce davis:

Like I said, I didn't even realize I had won. Usually they announce the winner in the following week's email, but I guess it may have been one I didn't pay close attention to. It would have been nice if I was sent an email telling me I had won but it was a nice surprise in my mail today.

It's also a good thing the players sign with their numbers, or else I'd have no idea which signature went where.

Also: The most underrated player on each team.

Ross McKeon Column

So when the coach of the San Jose Sharks says he puts a certain player on the top line because "Joe needs someone fast to play with," that grabs your attention.

Milan Michalek is Thornton's left-hand man, and you better not blink because you won't see him standing still for long.

"Joe needs a fast guy to play with," coach Ron Wilson said. "He and Milan seem to feed on each other and really get things done."

Good to know our $26 million dollar investment is getting notice.
