Mile High Report RIP 2011/2012 Denver Broncos

We are gathered here and around the world to pay tribute to our Denver Broncos. You provided a mind boggling amount of both exasperating play and thrilling finishes. I will never forget that the season brought very little hope with Kyle Orton at the controls and insane euphoria once Tim Tebow took over. I won't forget the weekly cardiac arrests that my heart was subjected to. And I won't forget that when all was said and done, my Denver Broncos won a playoff game this year after a 1-4 start. I will be forever grateful for that gift after the the brutal last 3 years. I will also never forget the wonderful presence of a true role model like Tim Tebow in the Denver community. It was fun...and maddening...and although it came to a brutal, bloody, messy, embarrassing end tonight, I have much hope for the future. But...

Mile High Report What happened to our awesome Broncos fanbase?

Waaa.  Waaa.  Waaa.  Cry me a river.  Wait...there isn't any crying in football.  What is wrong with these Bronco (Tebow) fans?  My god...it is like a 3 year old who doesn't get the toy they want.  Grow up people!

MileHi Midlife Crisis FFL

Last chance for another FFL. I have a 12 person PPR league with couple more slots to fill. Entry fee is $75 and includes a survivor league aspect. Mixed bag as far as owners team loyalty (meaning have a TB/Cowboys/Pats etc.) League is set to draft Tuesday, but I may move it back 1 week. http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/milehighmidlifecrisis

As much as Shanny is derided for his recent performance...he gets it. Some may view the situation in Washington as a circus, but, with respect to making a QB change, isn't this what we want to hear from the Broncos? I'm specifically referring to the point in the article where he talks about the change. I've copied those 2 paragraphs below

McNabb's performance has the coach leaving all options open at the team's most important position for 2011. Shanahan said he had been planning to make the move after the Redskins (5-8) were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, which happened last weekend after a 17-16 loss to Tampa Bay.

"I've got to find where Rex Grossman is, where John Beck is. I want a chance to evaluate these guys," Shanahan said. "I told Donovan that there's nothing he could do in the three games that would influence me over what he's done over the last 13 games. I said, 'I'm not sure what I'm going to do in the college draft, if we're able to get the top quarterback in the draft, if there was a young Donovan McNabb or maybe a Sam Bradford, someone like that.' There's a lot of possibilities."

This is what we should have heard from the Broncos last week.

Mile High Report To DP or not to DP...

As I go through all the posts here at MHR, I've learned a few things.  To be sure, I've learned a lot more about the game of football from the contributors here.  I've learned to dig deeper into the statistics to back up my own views, but at the same time, I've learned that sometimes, statistics won't tell you the real story.  I've learned to be thoughtful in my comments and try to refrain from "kneejerking" too often.  And, sadly, I've learned that I'm part of a community that tends to have very little patience for some other forums and people who choose to comment on articles there...specifically the Denver Post.

Mile High Report Why I'm optimistic

We are 3-10...with a real shot at 3-13...and I'm optimistic.  We have suffered too many humiliations this year...and I'm optimistic.  We have arguably the worst defense in the league...and I'm optimistic.  We have Denver fans all over the world at their breaking point...and I'm optimistic.  We just fired our coach...and I'm optimistic.  Why?  Well I'll tell you...but first full disclosure.

I was off the McD bandwagon from the time that he moved into the office and issued the order to take down the Super Bowl pictures.  And more so with every ensuing questionable call or draft pick.  And I was critical of McD, but willing to let him change my perception.  It never happened.  And my pessimism grew...more than I can ever remember.  And I've been a fan of the Broncos since 1978.  All the while...I tried to maintain some semblance of a thoughtful approach to my posts and comments on this site.  But I may have been taken as just another negative poster by many.  After the jump...I'll tell you why I have not felt so optimistic since I found out that Shanny had been fired.

PFT Writer Greg Rosenthall posted this article and I think it can show McD that sometimes, you need to change your scheme to fit your players. IMO, it is something that McD should have done upon coming to the Broncos, but we are where we are now. Over the past 3 weeks, we have seemingly started games very well with a balanced offensive attack. Ensuing drives seemed to get away from that. I think that our offense is capable of being a balanced offense with some tweaking. I would love to see us really focus on our running attack and getting away from 3 WR sets. We seemed to have the most success when we were running true 2 TE sets. Maybe we can start getting into 3rd downs that require less than 8 yards to convert.

Mile High Report Stink for GM (with link to audio)

Anybody hear the conversation on the radio between D-Mac, Alfred Williams, and Stink last night?

D-Mac, Alfred Williams and Stink were discussing what the Broncos needed to do...specifically bring in a strong GM to oversee all personnel decisions.  All felt that McD has too much on his plate.  Alfred then said he felt Stink would be a good GM for the Broncos...and asked him if he would ever consider that kind of opportunity.

Mile High Report Why I love 1 Brandon and hate another

Lloyd versus Marshall.  Besides the fact that Lloyd is having a monster season and Marshall is having a pretty dismal year, there is another, more important reason why I hate Marshall and love Lloyd.  This morning I woke up to read that Lloyd was asked about Denver fans.  I'd like to contrast his answer with one that Marshall gave a couple years back when we got smoked by the Chargers here at home.  Most of you see where I am going with this...

Mile High Report Is the NFL our version of Stephen King's Running Man?

Hey MHR...with all of the talk, criticisms, and general negativity concerning our beloved Broncos, I wanted to turn my attention away from the team and towards the disturbing trend of injuries in the NFL.  I know we all, as Broncos fans, can attest to what seems to be a rapidly increasing list of players beset by, not just the normal kinds of injuries that occur due to playing in this violent sport, but to long term severe injuries.  It reminded me for some reason of the book by Stephen King - The Running Man.  If you have no interest in the topic, no worries...just don't feel that you need to chide me for a lame post or anything...just wanted a break from Hillis, McD, and 2-6...if for just a few minutes.

Just saw this on Yahoo. Seems that the trade giving up Hillis has now become a national talking point. Charles Robinson's weekly winners and losers column spotlights his thoughts on the trade. So...it isn't just a bunch of Denver fans that are caught up in this.

Mile High Report Appreciation of our past...

I'm sitting here and I have a smile on my face.  I should be working, but I can't.  It has been too difficult of a task for me so far this week.  I can't stop flashing back to the beating we took this past weekend.  My work is suffering and I can't sleep.  So I did what any sane Broncos fan should do.  I looked to our past.

Mountain West Connection Ideal MWC results for Week 1

I always want to see my team, the CSU Rams, do well and have all others in our conference lose.  But with the BCS AQ bid virtually beyond grasp now, I'm all for rooting on MWC members in non-conference games.  So, with that in mind, and with changes coming in the next couple of years, what exactly would be the ideal result for the MWC?

Here is an article that really makes me wonder how profitable our local ball club is. If Pittsburgh, ranking 27th in attendance this year so far, can be that profitable, I wonder what the Rox, currently ranking 10th come in at.

Let's get it going Ram Fans!

Ok...CSU Ram Alum here. My question to all the CSU fans out there is: why can't we get our own blog going. One that is specifically about CSU sports. Utah and BYU both have there own. As a fan away from home and living in TX, I miss getting coverage of my team. It can't be too hard to get it set up...what needs to be done. And really...this goes for the other teams in the conference as well...we all talk a big game, want to be part of the BCS, but if our FANS can't even organize a small blog, what reason does the BCS have for even considering our conference for an automatic bid! It is kind of embarrasing. I know that the MWC Connection functions in that role, but come on...every team in every BCS Conference has there own team blog. I'm sure there are plenty of fans that would love to get regular information on our teams.

Krieger with speculation that maybe Tebow is losing some of the confidence that McD has in him. I'm not sure about this, but coming on the heels of Orton's extension, worth talking about. I can't believe that McD has changed his mind in the slightest.

Mile High Report The Broncos aren't who we thought they were...

This is what I know about the Broncos...they are a better TEAM than we had any right to think in the offseason.  6-2 at the midpoint is a fantastic success.  They are a vastly improved defense from what we thought we might have in the offseason.  Our defense isn't who we thought they were (best in the league) after the first 6 games.  They have certainly handled themselves well even in the two losses, but they are not the best.  Our offense is not as good as our record may suggest.  After last season, we riled on about the need to improve our scoring offense to match up with our offensive yardage rankings.  We did the opposite...our yardage output has dropped considerably to match up with our scoring.  I'm not sure what our rankings are after tonights game, but i'm sure we are in the bottom third of both categories now.  Now I'm just a regular fan with little knowledge of X's and O's, but the only way our offense works is if we are able to establish the run and have a couple of big plays...keep opposing defenses somewhat honest.  Also, as much as I appreciate the lack of interceptions this year, we don't have big play capability.

All told, I'm ecstatic to be factors in the playoffs this year, but my expectations have been tempered a bit.  We have much to improve on offensively.  Our defense just can't expect to hold up game after game without much offensive support.  We saw tonight and last week what a tired defense looks like.  It reminds me a bit of last year at times.  Score for the last two games...58-17 against the Broncos.  Our defense deserves better.  Who woulda thought that would be the case after last year!

Purple Row Looking ahead to 2010

As excited I am to see how we do this postseason, and I think we are very much in contention for another World Series appearance, I have been wondering recently, how Rockies roster is going to look next year.  I think we will be in an even better position to succeed...who will stay...who will go.  Here are a few of my thoughts...what do you think?

Purple Row How many wins will it take to win NL Wild Card?

So with 42 games left in the regular season and the Rox up on the Giants by 1 and the Marlins by 3 and the Braves by 4...how many wins will it take to win the Wild Card?  I'm thinking 93 wins...Rox would need to go 26-16 the rest of the way.  What do you think?  Will the Braves/Marlins/Giants overtake the Rox and if so, how many wins in their remaining games (41/42/42 respectively) would they need to have?
