since nobody is interested in baseball around here in baseball season, i'm sure this news is nothing more than a fart in the wind on the brink of football season, but jim wells has retired as the head baseball coach at alabama. assistant mitch gaspard, widely regarded as bama's head coach in waiting all along, has been named the new head coach. wells was in t-town for 15 years, and in that time became the winningest coach in the program's history. i for one am happy about this, b/c i feel that wells' heart hasn't been in it for a few years now. hopefully gaspard can light a fire under these guys starting in '10.

bama wrapped up the regular season on this past weekend in relatively unimpressive fashion. they had won 13 of 15 heading into the weekend and then promptly dropped 2 of 3 in auburn to an auburn team that didn't even qualify for the conference tourney. with that, the tide slipped from a 3 seed to a 4 seed and a wednesday night (8:30pm) date with the red hot gamecocks. as usual the tide's, performance in the sec tourney will have a direct effect on their postseason future, so keep an eye on our boys this week. get more info on the sec tourney in hoover here.

i bitched about a lack of baseball coverage...todd told me if i didn't like it to contribute something...i told todd i had no interest in contributing...so here i am contributing. our boys completed the 3 game sweep of arkansas (who just happened to be ranked #11) this afternoon. the sweep brings the tide within a half game of lsu for not only the sec west lead, but the overall best record in the sec. the tide has had a few slumps this season (including getting swept by florida back in march), but with this weekend's sweep they have now won 7 in a row. all that is left before the long trip to hoover is a midweek game with jacksonville state, and a weekend series in auburn. barring a complete bed wetting in the next two weeks, the tide should no doubt be hosting a regional to start the post season. with all of the meaningful games in the near future, and all of the talented players (fyi: kent matthes is tied for the national lead with 25 dingers. not to mention austin hyatt who is 7-1 with an era around 3.00 and threw the complete game friday night), this team deserves a little bit of love around here. so let's support bama baseball, huh??
