ACC / Big 10 Challenge Matchups Released

1

This challenge is going to be difficult to predict with 7 out of 12 ACC coaches either in their first or second year on the job. That being said, I'll take an early swing at it (winning team in bold). Miami at Purdue - Miami has a lot coming back, but Purdue is very tough to beat at home. Northwestern at Georgia Tech - Georgia Tech will be playing an hour from campus with a depleted roster. Illinois at Maryland - Illinois lost a lot, but Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson are a better 1-2 punch than anything Maryland has. Michigan at Virginia - UVA returns a lot and gets Mike Scott back. Michigan lost their best player. Clemson at Iowa - Call me a homer, but Clemson has more talent and Iowa is still rebuilding. Duke at Ohio State - Duke doesn't have a PG and their best player is a freshman. In an early season game, advantage OSU. Indiana at North Carolina State - These teams have comparable talent, so advantage home team. Penn State at Boston College - BC lost EVERYTHING, but bring in a solid class. PSU lost Talor Battle. Florida State at Michigan State - On paper these teams are very close, but I'll take Izzo at home. Virginia Tech at Minnesota - Always pick against VT in meaningful non-conference games. Wake Forest at Nebraska - Wake is a train wreck. Wisconsin at North Carolina. - Great matchup of contrasting styles. I expect Wisc to frustrate UNC with their pace for awhile. Big 10 - 7 ACC - 5

Miami Hires George Mason's Larranaga as New Head Coach

1

In a shocking move, the Hurricanes were able to pull Jim Larranaga away from George Mason. I live in Northern Virginia. Larranaga and his wife live right down the street from my buddy's parents. His son John (who played at GMU) lives in the area and played on my men's league team one season. Most figured he'd spend another 5 years or so at GMU and then retire. Larranaga, 61, may not coach too much longer, but he serves as a major upgrade from Frank Haith.

Rod Hall Commits, Rounds Out Clemson's 2011 Class

The pessimist in me looks at it like this: He had offers from Nebraska, Coastal Carolina, Delaware St, and Tennessee St. There is slim pickings this time of year. But Tennessee St. and Delaware St. offers don't provide optimism that we picked up a guy that can help us compete with Duke and UNC. He cites his best attributes as his physicality and defense. That's nice, but we need SHOOTERS! The optimist in me loves his highlights in the video. He is strong as an ox and has hops. He also has very quick hands, as he picked a couple pockets with relative ease. We needed depth in the backcourt and with one scholarship still open it was nice to fill a need. Hopefully he adds a consistent jumpshot to his game.

Frank Haith Leaves Miami for Mizzou Job

+

I've stated it before, the ACC has been down in basketball the past few years because of poor coaching. With 3 new coaching hires last year, and soon to be 3 new coaching hires this year, the conference could be turning things around. Lowe, Hewitt, and Haith were not good basketball coaches. Mizzou going from Mike Anderson to Frank Haith is a big step down for them. That's a very questionable hire. If you are a fan of the conference, these changes are a good thing. From Clemson's perspective, it should make the conference stretch a grueling one.

Clemson [19-10 (8-7), RPI: 67, SOS: 90] Clemson lost at Duke on Wednesday night, but looked tough in doing so. What does that mean? Probably not very much. After all, the eye test only goes so far. Still, for a team that might just be on the cusp of the tournament, the inability to lose a bad game down the stretch -- at Duke doesn't qualify, and the Tigers still have a chance to beat Virginia Tech at home Saturday -- might just distinguish Brad Brownell's team by default. The rest of the bubble (Colorado, Memphis, Baylor, etc.) has been habitually losing bad games. If Clemson can get the Virginia Tech win, it might move up enough to get on the right side of the bubble heading into the ACC tournament. Even then, the Tigers probably have to play well. With their top nonconference win coming against Charleston, the margin for error is just too small. But the chance is certainly there."

Eamonn Brennan over at ESPN is starting to believe that Clemson can make the tourney with a win over Virginia Tech. Clemson got a lot of help this past week with many bubble teams suffering tough losses.

2011 Guard Devin Coleman Commits to Clemson

3

I don't know if there is enough in this video for me to accurately rate him. But the guy he reminds me of is Elliot Williams who played at Duke for 1 year and then transferred to Memphis. They are both slashing lefties with unorthodox form on their jumpshots. He was recruited by Minnesota and Iowa, but because he didn't sign in the fall his spot was filled and they stopped recruiting him. It ended up coming down to Penn and Clemson. Regardless, I do believe it was important to bring in another guard in the 2011 class. We were on the verge of being painfully thin in the backcourt, with just Andre Young, Cory Stanton, and 2011 commit Daniel Sapp set to play for the Tigers next year
