Kansas names former NFL assistant Dave Campo as defensive coordinator
I'll be honest, you guys: the past few weeks of my life haven't been grand. If you didn't read, I had a bit of an incident last week, and have spent about eight more hours in a dentist's chair than I'd prefer. And as a guy who really, really hates dentists, that's an eternity. And this is some pricey stuff; insurance is covering some of it, but it's still a hefty sum of money that's being injected directly into my mouth. And it's not like I'm swimming in money right now. Between paying for a honeymoon (expensive, yo), paying for plane tickets to go to other people's weddings (inviting me to their special day, the jerks), and feeding my ongoing addiction to Fabergé eggs, the ol' bank account is awfully low in funds, which has me -- pardon the pun -- down in the mouth.
So I would really like to take a moment to thank the Kansas football program for providing a consistent source of cheer and humor during these trying times for me. It's like they knew I needed to be cheered up, so they hired the funniest possible candidate for their defensive coordinator (and, for that matter, head coach) vacancies.
Thank you, Kansas football program. You are a beacon of hilarious light in an otherwise bleary landscape.

So, this guy is the new head coach at Kansas.
No, seriously.
Guys, stop looking at me like that. I'm dead serious. It's official and everything.
GUYS THIS ISN'T A JOKE. I'M NOT KIDDING.
Rules for Football Played on a Mile-Long Field
Sports have kind of sucked lately. As a result, let's forget about it and instead dive into what has to be the greatest idea of all time, derived by the great Jon Bois.
Taking another look at my thoughts on Mizzou-to-the-SEC
If you haven't noticed, I've been distinctly in the minority here on RMN, being against Missouri's move to the SEC (and I think I've gained a few enemies as a result). I spent a lot of time thinking about it today, about why I'm against it when so many people whose opinions I value are for it. And, well, I wrote a blog post.

IT'S OFFICIAL: SEC announces Mizzou to the SEC
Effective July 1, 2012. Regardless of what side you're on in this thing, this is undoubtedly an historic day for the University of Missouri.

Today is the 23rd birthday of the official softball player of Rock M Nation, Marla SCHWEISBERGER, and wow, is she in a hurry to open her presents!
(And yes, I know she graduated, but she will forever be our first Official Softball Player of RMN. Because SCHWEISBERGER rules. Deal with it.)

Awake.
I'm a heavy sleeper.
I set two alarms: one on my iPhone, and one on my alarm clock. I figure, if two alarms -- set to full blast, mind you -- won't wake me from my slumber, I probably don't deserve to wake up on time. Maybe I don't deserve to wake up at all.
Tonight, I'll stay up until 2 a.m. Maybe later. Sleep, if you think about it, is one of the few things in life in which the starting time is listed as "TBD," but the the end time is clearly defined.
Tomorrow morning, though, both of my alarms, simultaneously, and I'll wake up at 8 a.m. on a Saturday, which sounds insane. I'll do it because Missouri has a football game. It will be about the 100th Missouri game I've watched.
Tomorrow morning, in some place just outside Nowheres-ville, Missouri, an old man will roll out of bed at 8 a.m. on a Saturday, which doesn't sound insane to him, and strap on his old snap-back Missouri cap, the one that was cool, then not cool, then suddenly cool again. He'll do it because Missouri has a football game. It will be about the 500th Missouri game he's watched.
Tomorrow morning, Erin Connelly will wake up way earlier than her parents want her to. Her parents will argue over whose turn it is to tend to her, and unbeknownst to her, she'll join the ritual. She'll sit in spot specially designated by her parents. She'll do it because Missouri has a football game. It will be the 1st Missouri game she's watched.
Tomorrow morning, whether we realize it or not, we're all on the same clock. We're going to rise as one, because Missouri has a football game. It might be the 2nd or 50th or 10,000th Missouri game we've watched; it doesn't matter. What matters is that we're here. We've survived just enough nights to make it here.
We'll be awake. Awake enough, once again, to watch college kids in silly uniforms run around and play a game. And we'll feel connected to them, and to each other, one more time. We'll be awake, and I'll be if it won't be the best kind of awake.
Happy holidays.
Your soundtrack for the best day of the year.

Just spoke w Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin, who said he's been cleared to play finally after months of tests for Lymphoma, type of cancer
Maclin told me final test came back today after he got a scare on his bday May 11th. Had lymph nodes removed last week
Told me he's totally fine and was a virus that has left his body and expects to return once he recovers from last week's procedure.
A series of Tweets from journalist-slash-Subway aficionado Jay Glazer. The ending to this story is as happy as the beginning and middle were scary. Glad you're OK, J-Mac.
#Mizzou LT Elvis Fisher leaves practice with what Gary Pinkel called "a significant knee injury."
{4pm edit - Report is that Fisher has ruptured his patellar tendon in his left knee and will miss the season}
Our amigo Gabe. Not a big deal. Everything's fine. Nothing to worry about. If you'll excuse me, I'm due for a crying jag in the corner. No, don't worry, it's a regularly scheduled crying jag; this has nothing to do with the potential serious knee injury to Mizzou's most important lineman. It's just like a check-up, you know?
Bill's dropping the check off on Monday. You guys are my freakin' heroes.

Tremendous Stubble Charity Drive: The Fun Part
UPDATE (Friday, 1:50pm Central): Been in touch with the wonderful MU Health people, and we're beginning the donation process (getting the money from PayPal to them, basically). I'll keep you guys apprised and will giddily announce a final total when, you know, the money is actually donated, but let's put it this way: you guys freakin' rule.
If you haven't donated yet but still want to, we encourage you to follow this link and donate directly to the MU Children's Hospital. Or, if you donated and want to donate again, go to that link. You know, you should just bookmark that link.
So, in short: you guys rule, and if you haven't donated yet, send it directly to the hospital instead of to me. K THX BYE.
-ghtd36
A few things of note:
-Again, this is all based on everyone coming through on their pledges. Because if you don't come through on your pledge, it's court-admissible proof that you hate children.
-This is only reflective of pledges made in the comments of the original post, not on Twitter or in the cockles of your souls.
-This doesn't reflect "minimum" donations. For example, if you pledged "$5 per win, with a minimum donation of $50," we're only counting the $5 per win.
-The prop bet scoreboard reads thusly:
6 wins
9 home runs
An appearance in the Final Eight
2 shutouts
2 run-rule victories
48 strikeouts by Chelsea Thomas or Kristin Nottelman
6 Mizzou walks in the fifth inning (damn it, Boom)
41 strikeouts by Chelsea Thomas
15 extra-base hits
Amazing. Simply amazing. And if you haven't pledged, there's still time!

$2,510.63
The projected total donation to the MU Children's Hospital, so far. A few important notes on this number:
-Obviously, this is all based on you guys living up to your promises. I'M LOOKING AT YOU, EVERYONE.
-This is only reflective of pledges pledged in the comments, and not on Twitter or in your own hearts.
-This does not include minimum donations (for example, if you pledged $5 a game with a $50 minimum...I'm only counting the $5 a game for now).
-It includes the following occurrences of prop bets:
4 wins
7 home runs
1 shutout
2 run-rule wins
26 Chelsea Thomas or Kristin Nottelman strikeouts
2 Mizzou walks in the 5th inning of games (damn it, Boom)
19 Chelsea Thomas strikeouts
13 extra base hits
So...yeah, you guys are freakin' awesome. And there's still time to pledge if you haven't!

OU's senior linebacker Austin Box has been confirmed dead. The ME has confirmed it.
Per the Twitter account of KFOR in Oklahoma City. We've had our share of giggles at Box's expense, namely in the Sooner Disrespect Chronicles, but it goes without saying that our hearts go out to the Box and Sooner families. A tragedy.
Details appear to be sketchy, but here's the KFOR report.
UPDATE, 4:00 PM: Assuming this is real, a police report has surfaced.
A little Jonathan Williams talk
We discussed Allen RB Jonathan Williams' verbal commitment to Mizzou a bit in our most recent podcast (April 22 episode). Williams talk starts at the 2:25 mark and continues for about two minutes or so. Though I encourage you to listen to the whole thing, because it's awesome.
Let's not kid ourselves: we're all watching this Mizzou vs. Oklahoma softball game on ESPN. Let's consider this our live thread while we watch our best friend Ehren Earleywine coach our team to a remorseless victory.
Mizzou softball sign contest
So, in what can only be described as a move they will either posthumously celebrate or regret, the Mizzou athletic department has sanctioned a sign contest for this Sunday's ESPN-televised softball game against Oklahoma.
There are rules which you should read (be tasteful, no larger than 2' by 3', etc.) and a $50 Tiger Team Store gift card up for grabs.
Let me be blunt here:
If a Tremendous Stubble sign does not win this contest or at least make it on ESPN, you are all dead to me. Do what you must, but win this damn thing. THIS IS OUR MOMENT. THIS IS OUR TIME.

Otto Porter's high school coach Kenyon Wright has confirmed Porter's commitment to Georgetown.
Eric Bossi of Rivals. But on the plus side, I knocked over the Sun-Sphere.
This man's name is Frank Haith. I'll give you a moment to Google him.
Noted sports blogger and bikini connoisseur Brooks at Sports By Brooks is saying he could be Mizzou's next coach.
Talk amongst yourselves.
UPDATE 10:55pm CT
From the ultra-reliable Joe Walljasper on Twitter:
"Got confirmation that the University of Miami's Frank Haith has agreed to be Missouri's basketball coach."
Wow.
Wow on wow, it's Marcus Denmon's 21st birthday.
Better Know An Opponent: Cincinnati
This is the first in a (hopefully) six-part series highlighting 10 things you may not know about Mizzou's opponents in the NCAA Tournament. Please keep in mind that while everything below is true, it's meant in jest.
Better Know An Opponent, Vol. 1: 2009 NCAA Tournament Opponents
Part One – Cornell
Part Two – Marquette
Part Three – Memphis
Part Four – Connecticut
Better Know An Opponent, Vol. 2: 2010 NCAA Tournament Opponents
Today's profile: the Cincinnati Bearcats
1) The University of Cincinnati is a public state university originally founded in 1819. That's to say, Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio -- two separate entities -- were both founded in 1819. The Medical College of Ohio was founded by Dr. Daniel Drake, a local benefactor most known for basically being rich. You know, like Stan Kroenke. Cincinnati College was funded by the Lytle Family, the original family of Cincinnati, and William Lytle served as its first president.
But the college only survived for six years, and in 1826, Cincinnati College was closed. Nine years later, who came to the rescue?
Dr. Daniel Drake.
So imagine it like this: you go to a bar with a buddy and each get housed. I'm talking a $150 bar tab each. You both have a good time, and when you go to pay your tab, your buddy realizes, "Oh crap, I don't have any money!" So you cover your own tab, then cover your buddy's tab.
Dr. Daniel Drake is the ultimate bro.

Upset Pick of the Week: Missouri over Kansas, Saturday.
OK, so maybe this isn't fair considering that Mizzou should probably be the favorite every time it plays at home. But based on rankings, this would certainly be a mild upset. Missouri desperately needs some momentum going into the Big 12 tournament and we've seen what beating KU has done for Kansas State. The Tigers can fluster Kansas on the perimeter if they get the fastest 40 minutes of basketball moving. Of course, to pull this off, they must rebound and get out on the break as quickly as possible. Losing to Mizzou may have some seed implications for Kansas, so the Jayhawks have plenty at stake, as well.
You know, I've always liked that Andy Katz fella.
Let's not act like RMN wouldn't sell 10,000 of these shirts.

Here at Rock M Nation, we try to dance around bad news as best we can. We like to keep things light, you know? Nobody wants to be a bummer.
So, here we go: three crappy stories spun positively, complete with hilarious, unrelated gif APPARENTLY YOU CAN'T PUT GIFS IN THIS DAY GETS SO MUCH WORSE OH WELL HERE'S A CUTE LITTLE RODENT THING!
-Jimmy "Battle of the" Burge was arrested last night in Jasper County on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia. But on the bright side, it was ONLY three grams of marijuana and a shotgun! Coulda been a lot worse! Hey-o!
-Mizzou self-reported 17 secondary violations to the NCAA, the most enjoyable of which is "The girlfriend of a football player received an 'occasional' meal at the home of an athletics representative." Sounds sexy! Yeah!
-John Kadlec, the commentary voice of the football Tigers for the past 16 years, is retiring. He's a legend. My sincere hope is that he lives a long, healthy, awesome life, and he's replaced by Macho Man Randy Savage.
Mike Kelly: "Lawrence down the sideline, hemmed in at the 35, falls forward to the 11."
Randy Savage: "HE SNAPPED OFF THAT BIG RUN, OOOOH YEAH! LINEBACKERS NEED TO WORK ON THEIR PURSUIT ANGLES, OOOOH YEAH! IF THEY DON'T GET A FULLBACK, I'M GOING TO GIVE DAVID YOST A FLYING ELBOW DROP, OOOOOH YEAH!"

A loss to Buffs, an uninspired home win over Huskers...what's up with my formerly top 10 Mizzou hoopsters?
Tim Cowlishaw, via Twitter. Well, Tim, perhaps you noticed that Colorado pretty much shot the lights out, with its best player scoring a career high, and Mizzou still had a chance to win. Or maybe you noticed that Mizzou was pretty much in control of the entirety of last night's game until Nebraska scored some garbage time points. Or you at least noticed that Phil Pressey, one of the team's pace-setters and young guns, has been battling a banged-up hand.
Or, you know, maybe you haven't watched a Mizzou game since Illinois. Or Georgetown. Or 2009.
(Tim, we'd like to be friends. We really would. But you've got to meet us halfway here. Nothing's "up" with Mizzou. They're playing basketball.)
#Mizzou Sophomore DE Aldon Smith will declare for the NFL Draft: http://ow.ly/3AeJT
The official Mizzou Athletics Twitter account makes official what we all should have been anticipating.
Farewell, sweet Agent Smith. May your reign of remorseless destruction continue on, this time with a large paycheck.
#Mizzou announces that Blaine Gabbert is entering the 2011 NFL draft
So says Dave Matter. React accordingly. Oh, me? I'll be over here sobbing into a burlap doll with a tiny black No. 11 jersey on it and long flowing locks of blonde-ish hair.

Mizzou a No. 3 seed in latest Bracketology
Other tidbits from Joe Lunardi's Cavalcade of Whimsy and Terror:
-Mizzou's up from a No. 5 seed in last month's iteration. Somebody's been doin' some impressin'.
-Playing in Tulsa would be fun...right? Ri-right?
-Missouri's inevitable path to destiny™ (ahem): Vermont, UNLV, Connecticut, Ohio State, Kansas, Duke. Mmm, that's some tasty potential vengeance.
-Illinois' a 4, Old Dominion's an 11 and Georgetown's a 3.
-Six bids for both the Big 10 and Big XII, and a whopping TEN BIDS for the Big East, including three of the top eight seeds.
Better Know An Opponent: Iowa
This is the seventh in an ongoing series highlighting 10 things you may not know about Mizzou's various postseason opponents. Please keep in mind that while everything below is true, it's meant in jest.
BKAO Volume 1: 2009 NCAA Tournament
Part One -- Cornell
Part Two -- Marquette
Part Three -- Memphis
Part Four -- Connecticut
BKAO Volume 2: 2010 NCAA Tournament
Part One -- Clemson
Part Two -- West Virginia
(Yes, I wrote a few BKAOs for Mizzou's 2009 football opponents, but I basically stopped doing them halfway through, so we'll pretend they don't exist, because rewriting history is fun.)
Today's profile: The Iowa Hawkeyes
1- The University of Iowa is a public university in Iowa City, Iowa. It's the oldest public university in the state, and is just 59 days younger than the state of Iowa itself.
But let's back up here for a second. The University of Iowa is not actually the University of Iowa. No, its official name is "The State University of Iowa."
Well, OK, but then what about Iowa State? What are they?
Iowa State University of Science and Technology? Are you kidding me, state of Iowa? You're going to call The State University of Iowa "University of Iowa," and when a second university comes along -- a mere 11 year later, mind you, which calls your foresight dubious at best -- you're just going to tack on "Science and Technology" and call it a day? You never thought that would come back to bite you, founding fathers of Iowa?
It should be noted, however, that Iowa has a rich tradition of giving normal things unnecessarily complicated names, such as the Annual Conglomeration of Fatty Foods and Vomit-Inducing Attractions in the City of a Multitude of Moines.
