Illinois had a lead, which means they were going to lose a lead, which they did, blowing a 13-3 halftime lead and losing 23-13 to Missouri. If we could teleport into the soul of an Illini fan for just on second, it would have been at the moment when Mizzou's Carl Gettis downed a punt at the Illinois 1 early in the fourth quarter. Sitting there on the one yard line with a freshman quarterback looking 99 yards down the field at the endzone they needed to get to, the sense of impending doom must have been so vivid it had its own smell and taste, something like "Ron Zook's FAILpops for Children: Now With Real Glass!"

Per Gabe's Twitter. So, if you're into that whole "closure" thing, this is about as clear as you're going to get. Save us, Kendial Lawrence. You're our only hope.* *-Not actually our only hope

Not too shabby. For what it's worth, Auburn is 21st and Utah is 19th. So, yeah, Fire Pinkel and stuff.

More recently, though, Missouri has been characterized as underachieving, overcomplaining and just plain irrelevant — some have suggested Nebraska’s decision alone will determine whether the Big 12 continues or collapses. What changed? Well, it wasn’t anything Missouri officials said. They haven’t said anything more substantive than, "We are a proud member of the Big 12 Conference," on or off the record in months. But the rest of the Big 12 continues to talk, often anonymously, and that view is being repeated. That’s just the price for not playing the media’s game. Reporters tend to champion the causes of those who call them back. Journalism abhors a vacuum.

This isn't about Missouri. Nobody cares about Missouri. Stay, go, drop football, get mad all over again that the Insight Bowl invited Iowa State. Doesn't matter. If only Missouri leaves the Big 12, the league is fine. Heck, the league thrives. TV revenues wouldn't go down, plus there's one less mouth to feed. Heck, the NCAA might even give the Big 12 a waiver and let it keep the football championship game.

Ah, Berry Tramel, penning perhaps the most short-sighted column about expansion yet. According to Berry, if you have a tradition of success in football, you're important and people care about you. If you don't, nobody cares about you. This gives me an opportunity to rant for a second. All weekend long, ESPN has been harping about how Oklahoma is the second-biggest catch for the Pac-16 besides Texas. Really? I mean, really? Does nobody understand the idea of conference expansion? This isn't about football, people: it's about money. If you think Oklahoma and its 45th (OKC) and 61st (Tulsa) ranked media markets is a "catch" with regards to conference expansion, then you have failed to grasp the very essence of why anyone is interested in conference expansion in the first place. In terms of conference expansion, Oklahoma is basically a crimson and cream New Mexico with a better football team. Oh wait, ALBUQUERQUE IS A BIGGER MEDIA MARKET THAN OKLAHOMA CITY. /rant

With all the wrap-up stuff about basketball going on recently, it struck me at how highly regarded Norm Stewart is. I'm not from Missouri -- Texas born, Texas bred as most of you know -- so I didn't really understand the allure. On the other hand, I went to Missouri during the Quin Snyder era, and always thought of him as being a fine coach. Admittedly, I'm a Quin Snyder apologist, but I just always thought he was a pretty decent guy who made a couple bad decisions. So I finally did something that I've wanted to do for a while: compare Stewart and Snyder side by side. My opinion's probably not going to be popular, but I think you can see by the chart that the result is both clear and a bit shocking. Click here to get a better view of the chart.
