Viva El Birdos AttendingĀ Games

I was just pondering how many games I should attend this year when I started to wonder how many fellow VEBers attend regularly every year.

Viva El Birdos Cards Sign Jason LaRue

Looks like we got our backup catcher...

Link Should also mention that we signed pitchers Dewon Brazelton and John Wasdin to minor league deals, things are really heating up!

Viva El Birdos Cardinals Acquire Miguel Cairo

That's right, he's back. Take it for whatever you will. I think it's a possible temp-replacement for the Spezio "super-sub" role but I doubt he'll get a call up before the roster expansion.

Viva El Birdos Going to the game tonight

And I really have no idea what to expect of the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright on the mound isn't always a plus with the way this team has been up and down. Ted Lilly pitching? Oh lord, it's going to be one of those games, huh?

Viva El Birdos Longest games you've attended

Thought it might be fun to share some stories of the  extra inning or just plain old long games we've personally attended. The inspiration to start this diary was from Wednesday's game thread which fell into that conversation.

Anyway, I went to a game last year (my first at the new Busch) against the Dodgers which lasted 15 innings and Pujols won it with a walk-off home run. The length of the game was increased when there was a brief rain delay. It was a unique experience because I sat by a nice family from California on vacation to see their cardinals play. That's right, they weren't dodger fans! It was fun to hear their perspective of the game, especially the father, he said in the ninth inning with the game still tied "I hope this game goes all night." And I understood because coming from the west coast, he wasn't all that tired yet.

Another shorter game was in Phoenix to see my second favorite team the D-Backs face the Yankees (I believe two or three years ago) the game went into the 13 in which the D-Backs won with a walk off home run from Juan Brito. However, while the game ended at midnight, it was more like 2 in the morning central, so being from Illinois, I was tired. But it was all worth it because I got to meet Gonzo before the game :]

Cardinals just got veteran catcher Kelly Stinnett from the Dodgers for "cash considerations" according to stlcardinals.com. Heres the link: http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070603&content_id=2002965&vkey=news_ stl&fext=.jsp&c_id=stl

Viva El Birdos On an unrelated note

What's with all the negativity on VEB nowadays? Everywhere I look someone is giving someone else a put-down or throwing out a derogatory comment to another member of the VEB community. So, I guess my question is why? Frustrated by the Card's struggles, work or school? Head over to the P-D boards and duke it out with other people you don't know from Adam, not here. If you feel this didn't deserve a diary, I'm sorry, but I felt I had to post this because I hate to see VEB this way.

Viva El Birdos What are you most excited about for 07?

This year I look forward to seeing:

  1. Anthony Reyes pitch a full season in the majors.
  2. Adam Wainwright start.
  3. If Spiezio can get a starting job in the outfield. (I'd rather have him everyday than Juan Encarnacion)
  4. Our bullpen perform in late innings without Wainwright.
  5. A healthy Izzy.
  6. Adam Kennedy and David Eckstein turning many double plays.
  7. Kip Wells turn around his career and become the next Weaver, as opposed to the next Ponson.
  8. The boys defend their title!

Let's say for conversation sake, that Schmidt signs with a non-cardinals team, and Weaver and Suppan sign elsewhere along with LF Luis Gonzalez.

Viva El Birdos Do you want Gonzo?

Alot of stories have been going around involving the Cardinals outfield options, and after the Edmonds signing, particularly Luis Gonzalez. Gonzo says he wants to come here and can be had for alot less than the sure-to-be insanely over-priced one hit wonders like Gary Matthews Jr.
Walt said he wanted to get "the best quality pitcher and the best quality hitter" and Gonzo may not appear as that in the first glance, but with further research I think his extra base hits and club house charm could make him a good rental at a good price giving us more money to go after a pitcher and a second baseman, so what do you think?

 Read the story here: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/11/luis_gonzalez_t.html
