Hammer and Rails former purdue star matt mitrione murked some poor fool at UFC on Versus 4 this saturday

now normally a walk off knockout would be talked about for weeks on end after the fact, especially since this was matt's 5th win in a row and sets him up for a massive step up in competition in the HW division. (yeah the ref was WAY out of position, i know)

Hammer and Rails big ten tie breaker scenarios, it's very good (and thorough), but with crap punctuation

from the bigten.org website; i know, it's a pretty dry read but bear with me it'll get better after the jump

Ties for seeding the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament will be broken as follows:

In case of a tie for any place finish in the regular-season standings, the following tie-breaking procedure shall be followed in order to seed teams in the Tournament bracket.

TWO-TEAM TIE

1. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular season.

2. Each team's record vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular season standings (or in the case of a tie for the championship, the next highest position in the regular season standings) continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

  • A. When arriving at another pair of tied teams while comparing records, use each team's record against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to their own tie-breaking procedures), rather than the performance against the individual tied teams.
  • B. When comparing records against a single team or a group of teams, the higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group is unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1); in the case of tied percentages vs. the team or group of 1.000 or .000 the following shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.

3. Won-loss percentage of all Division I opponents.

4. Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.

MULTIPLE-TEAM TIE

1. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular season.

  • A. When comparing records against a single team or a group of teams, the higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group are unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1); in the case of tied percentages vs. the team or group of 1.000 or .000 the following shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.
  • B. After the top team among the tied teams is determined, the second team is ranked by its record among the original tied teams, not the head-to-head record vs. the remaining team(s).

2. If the remaining teams are still tied, then each tied team's record shall be compared to the team occupying the highest position in the final regular-season standings, continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

  • A. When arriving at another pair of tied teams while comparing records, use each team's record against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to their own tie-breaking procedures), rather than the performance against the individual tied teams.

3. Won-loss percentage of all Division I opponents.

4. Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.

now on to actually what that means for the schools this year

Hammer and Rails Matt Mitrione Certified BMF

no matter what your feeling are about matt mitrione the man (hint: he's a dick), his results in the cage speak for themselves.  the former purdue linebacker is 3-0 in the highest league in MMA and has shown improvement  in every fiight

After UFC 119 in indianapolis (and a dominant UD win over joey beltran), mitrione gave one of the most epic interviews ive ever seen.  the guy actually FIRED HIS AGENT FOR SUCKING......ON LIVE TELEVISION!!!.  he may be screwed up in the head but the guy sure has charisma

how the "holy buckeye" game didn't end up on this list is beyond my powers of recognition. I actually cried when it was over...SOBER! Even Rittenburg didn't pick it (chose "the fumble" game) Anyone who doesn't realize that Purdue fandom often times = misery hasn't been paying attention

Purdue's own Jake O'Brian looked horrible last weekend after showing up fat (9 lbs heavy REALLY?!!) to his fight against world ranked Light Heavyweight Gegard Mousasi in the DREAM LHW Grand Prix Semi-Finals on Saturday night, Jake proceeded to get guillotined from consciousness 30 seconds in to the first round. weak!!! have a looksie if it floats your boat

Hammer and Rails Purdue = UFC

since to the best of my knowledge TMill doesnt cover MMA, I am officially declaring myself the Hammer and Rails MMA guy.

why the deuce does a Purdue blog need an MMA guy you ask? simple because to date 3 former Purdue stars have fought/are fighting in the UFC (and if you don't know what that is than i can't help you)

my purdue credentials = growing up a purdue fan in the shadow of the Golden Dome/graduating from Purdue with a degree in History in 2008 (the best 6 years of my life)

a brief bio to help the uniniated better know a Purdue fighter

1) "Meathead" Matt Mitrione - before Matt Mitrione was faking injuries/screaming like an insane person/destroying what was left of the myth of Kimbo Slice, Mitrione was running around like a maniac as a linebacker for the Boilermakers.  He played professionally for the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings before moving on to professional Mixed Martial Arts.  As of this post he has a professional record of 2-0 with wins over former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Marcus Jones and internet sensation/fraud Kimbo Slice.  His next fight will be at UFC 119 September 25 in Indianapolis.

2) "Irish" Jake O'Brien - A former Indiana State Champion wrestler, Jake competed on Purdue's wrestling team until 2005.  Since moving on to mixed martial arts Jake has compiled a record of 14-3 with wins over established fighters like Christian Wellisch and Heath Herring.  While in the UFC he compiled a record of 5-3.  his next fight will be in the DREAM Light Heavyweight Grand Prix against Gegard Mousasi (the guy who got his ass kicked by King Mo on CBS) on July 10 in Saitama, Japan.

3) Jon Fitch - Simply put, Jon Fitch is an absolute stud.  If you are a Purdue fan, you should be a Jon Fitch fan.  After graduating from Purdue in 2003 (and becoming the captain of the wrestling team) Fitch moved on to professional fighting.  Even though he started with a pedestrian 2-2 (1 No Contest) record in his first 5 fights, Fitch would go on to win his next 16 fights (including an incredible 8 in a row in the UFC) and eventually challenge divisional kingpin Georges St. Pierre for the title.  After getting the absolute hell beaten out of him (it was ugly) Fitch returned to his winning ways and today is pretty much considered the #2 welterweight in the world.  His next fight is on august 7 in Oakland against highly ranked Thiago Alves at UFC 117.

basically im just going to keep you guys updated on what happens with the Purdue guys in the most exciting and fastest growing sport in the world.

and if no one reads who cares?

Bloody Elbow MMA fan elitism and the playground mentality that is BE

Let me begin by saying that this is my first fanpost (and hopefully my last)

None of you really know me, and I don't really give a crap if you do.  I have been around the comment section of this site for a while (though I didn't actually sign up until much later).  I am admittedly a TUF (2) noob and am by no means an authority on anything MMA.  So if you call me an ignorant noob or whatever that's fine, I love this sport and don't really need anyone else's approval to continue to do so.

However, I have noticed a disturbing trend in the last few months in regards to how the boards are treating new fans. The fanpost by thisredengine is a perfect example.  While I agree that things like racism and bigotry and petty name calling have no place here (or in society in general for that matter).  It comes across as elitist when people are disregarding others' opinions and insights because of their join date (possibly the most asinine thing i have ever seen) or because their opinion flies in the face of what is accepted to be the "norm" (finding GSP fights boring does not immediately invalidate one's opinion).

These attitudes remind me quite a bit of the punk scene in and around chicago in the late 90's and early 00's (the aught's bitches).  When i was first getting into it, it was almost impossible to make friends or find new bands/parties because of how closely guarded those already in the "scene" were of their precious lifestyle.  (on a side note please hold your judgement of punk music aside as I don't give a shit and it will make you sound ignorant and off topic)  What mattered to these people was not the growth of the music (MMA) or the viability for making a living for the bands (fighters) but  the closeness and safety that came with belonging to a "cool" group.  and of course the end result of their elitism and closemindedness is the existence of Simple Plan and Sum 41 and the All American Rejects as the "faces" of pop-punk (collective hurl in 3....2....1....BLEH!)

The point is that in order to grow this sport we need to ACCEPT new people who may or may not have dissenting and possibly uninformed opinions and instead of um...you know..being a total dick to them we should work on educating them so that they can spread well informed opinions to others.

whatever...just saying.....ban me...i like fightlinker better anyhow
