For being a Denver Broncos beat writer for the cities biggest newspaper, Mike Klis sure is out of touch. If he did any kind of reasearch he'd know that Clady most likely won't make the top 100 since Joe Thomas has already been listed and right now he's considered a better left tackle than Clady. There's been a lot of talk as to whether Manning will make the top 100 or not, but with this weeks episode of Top 100, they say the biggest drop of any player will be listed and it's most likely Manning.

Mile High Report Strategy Moving Forward

Now that we have Peyton Freaking Manning, I was wondering what kind of strategies would the FO employ to maximize his celebrity status. I don't mean that in a Hollywood sort of way either. I mean it as more of a NFL HOF scrubs to a candle kind of way. Am I way out in left field on this? Hear me out.

It seems to me like we should start to attract some players that may not have been interested in playing for the Broncos previously. Not just receivers, but any position. Guys want to win superbowls and Peyton Freaking Manning gives any team a chance to do just that. Vets may come to us and won't mind getting paid just a bit less to squeeze into the available cap space we have left. These aren't the guys I'm concerned about. Sure, in a few years, they will retire or start to break down, maybe they've still got enough left in the tank to help us get to a SB or two, but I'm thinking about the scrubs.

I looked at the young guys we're getting, Caldwell, Porter, Woodyard coming back, and I look at their contracts and I wonder if there is strategy in how those are set up. Seems to me that Manning will make any receiver look good. Caldwell is kindova nobody in terms of what he's done in the league. Will he come out of this looking like a superstar? Will Thomas and Decker? I sure as hell hope so. What happens when their contracts expire? Are we going to be dealing with the next Mike Wallace in one of these guys who wants to be the next big money guy? Can we exploit that based on their contract lengths? Manning's high scoring offense should reap some benefits for our defense too. If we're up and the other team is not playing their game in order to keep up, will they make more mistakes? Will our defense capitolize? I sure as hell hope so, but what about their contracts? Are they set up in a way so we can exploit that?

Maybe I'm trying to see advantage where it's not feasible because who knows how well these guys will play, but part of me doesn't want this team to attract a bunch of guys who excel because Payton Freaking Manning makes them look good, only to lose them to other teams without compensation. I don't want what happens to a lot of championship teams to happen to the Broncos which is when a team does well, other teams scavenge their players away. They come in like vultures and pick the good meat off the bones.

What I want to know is, do you think the FO takes these kinds of things into account and will trade guys for picks because we've got Peyton Freaking Manning making them look good? Obviously it's a quite involved thing and over the next 4-5 years players will come and go, but I just want to be sure that we're set up to have a good young team even when Peyton Freaking Manning retires after having won 3 superbowls.

Mile High Report An argument to keep Tebow

Here's why I think Tebow should stay with the Broncos.

1. He's inury insurance. Look at what happened to the Colts when Peyton went down. It could happen again. He'll be 36 this season and coming off major injury. Our offense already knows how to play Tebow's game. If Manning goes down, we could switch fairly easily to Tebow's offense, more so than any other team that would take him in a trade. If he's going to go somewhere else to be a backup, why can't he be a back up here?

2. I don't think we'll get much for him in a trade right now. I think he'd be more valuable as a back up than getting a 5th or 6th round draft pick. We still have him on contract for the next 2 years minimum, I think. We can always trade him next year or before the trade deadline if some other team becomes depleted at QB due to injury. At that time, his value could be higher and if the values is good pull the trigger. Let's not jump the gun on this because emotions are high right now. Wait until he's a more valued commodity.

3. Releasing him would be stupid. We still need a backup QB. His cost isn't so much for a backup QB and getting nothing for him is rediculous.

4. Say Manning puts up a lead early as we hope for him to do. Let Tebow play the 4th quarter, grind out the clock, and rest Manning. Reduces injury risk to Manning. The opposing defense will already be tired from Manning's fast paced offense. Our running game always picked up near the end of the game for this very reason. It grinds out the clock, gives Tebow playing time, and potentially increases his stock for a trade at a later date.

5. I like Tebow. I think he's a good guy and I think he's good for the Broncos as a whole and the Denver community.

6. It keeps the media focus on Denver. I like that. I don't live in Denver, so I don't get as much coverage as a lot of Bronco fans, so if the NFL network and ESPN are showing Broncos stuff all the time because Tebow is still a Bronco, then hey, that's good for the organisation. Manning is a big boy and can handle it I'm sure. Also, I wouldn't like to see Tebows face on those same networks all the time in a different jersey. That would just be annoying, because you know he's still going to get a lot of attention.

7. Tebow can learn from Manning. I've said before that Manning probably doesn't have that much to give for Tebow. Their styles of play are drastically different. Anything Manning could teach Tebow, Tebow should already be learning from the coaches, like presnap reads, defensive formations, offensive groupings, etc. Tebow's problems are things that Manning can't fix, like mechanics, and game experience/practice reps. All that being said, I guess any young QB could learn from Manning something. I'm not a coach on any level, so my speculation about Manning not being able to teach Tebow is probably BS.

So there you have it. That's my feeling about the situation. Please give me your opinion as to why this is valid, or total BS. Thanks for reading, and GO BRONCOS!!!

Mile High Report Let's talk about something else

I was looking into the DT's again and I'm starting to flip flop. Jerel Worthy seems like a pretty good candidate for us at 25. I'd be happy with him, Devon Still, or Cox. The way the draft is playing out it's likely that any one of those guys will be there. A case could be made for any of these guys as being the BPA unless someone else drops drastically. At this position in the draft, BPA is a matter of opinion and is very subjective, so going for BPA and a need coincides for us. We didn't get the Miami guy, we haven't picked up Bunkley or Thomas yet (I say get'em both back). Our two other interior guys are coming off season ending injuries. McBean is a crime waiting to happen. We need something!! I was looking at some mock drafts and a lot of people have us taking a DT. But half the other mocks had us picking up a QB or TE fer cryin' out loud. A TE? Really? Some of these "experts" are real maroons. So, no Manning talk in the comments please. Only QB's that can be discussed are draft prospects and where they should be taken. Have at'er. And GO BRONCOS!!!

Some names on this list really intrigue me.

Payton Manning (obviously)
Mario Williams (too expensive with Manning in our sights)
Carl Nicks (replacement for Beadles?)
Brandon Carr (probably will get more than he's worth)
Stephen Tulloch (don't know much about this guy, but he's the highest ranked MLB on the list)
Brodrick Bunkley (honestly, why haven't we re-signed this guy yet?)
Carlos Rogers (meh, another 30 yr old CB, but still)
Red Bryant (possible DT for us)
Chris Myers (Walton has had some bad grades at center)
Scott Wells (another center option)
Paul Soliai (DT if we can't get Bunkley)
Mike Tobert (This guy ran and received all over us, I think he's worth a go)
Dwight Lowery (Saftey we need, is this guy it?)
Ben Grubs, OG (good drive blocker)
Jason Jones (DT option)
London Fletcher (He's old, but still plays well and could be a stop gap/insurance until/if Nate Irving steps up/folds)
Abram Elam (30yrs old, but another safety insurance/stopgap option)

Oh, hey, look, Kyle Orton and Payton Hillis or on this list at #'s 35 and 37 respectively. Bet we could get them back on the cheap...hahaha.

I can see this being an issue, but if Payton wants to go somwhere and his agent isn't doing their job, he could dump them. Then it becomes, who would the agent rather keep, Payton, or some other QB, be it Tebow or Alex Smith? I could see them screwing Alex Smith because Payton will demand a larger return from a team, but Tebow? He's a bit of a powerhouse in terms of the media and marketing (So is Manning by the way). Interesting matchup.

Tebow doesn't actually show up because he hasn't thrown enough passes to qualify for the 14 attempts per game but his passer rating is 87.9. That puts him right between Matt Moore and Mathew Stafford and IN THE TOP TEN!! That's ahead of Jay Cutler, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mark Sanchez, Andy Dalton, Matt Hasselbeck, Michael Vick, Phillip Rivers, Kevin Kolb, Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer and Matt Cassel, just to name a few. He's thrown 158 passes, and over 12 games that comes to 13.16 passes/game so he's just barely not listed in the qualified stat sheet, but keep in mind he didn't throw a pass for 5 of those games.

Mile High Report What if!

What if Tebow had started the season. Do you think we'd still be 3-5? I think we'd be 5-3.  We could have won against the Titans and the Raiders.  We'd be sitting on top of the division and we'd be talking a whole different story right now. Sure, we probably would have lost to the Chargers, and the Lions, and the Packers.  Of the games we've lost the two I mentioned we were only down by a total of 6 points. That's a field goal difference in each game. I feel like Tebow's play could have compensated for that in those games.  I know it's coulda, woulda, shoulda and if's, but as bad as our team has looked, we're not that far from being over .500 right now.  The sad part is that was the easy portion of our schedule.  We're about to hit the meat of it.

Mile High Report 1st pick in the Draft...WWYD? A poll.

Ok everyone, with all the Suck for Luck going around, it occurred to me there are two camps out there: To Suck for Luck, or To Not Suck for Luck and keep Tebow.  Pretty black and white.  Here are the stakes: No matter how Tebow does (good, bad, or blah), we still lose all the rest of our games and end up with the 1st pick in the draft.

Either Way, GO BRONCOS!!!

Normally I'm opposed to drafting a RB in the first round and I know we have other seemingly more pressing needs, but this dude is pretty good. He's strong, fast, quick, elusive, plays with power and always falls forward. He doles out the punishment. He looks like the next Adrian Peterson.

What are your thoughts?

Mile High Report When's the Trade Deadline?

Henne in Miami got hurt.  Maybe they need a QB now.  They're 0-4 so technically couldn't be doing any worse.  Not sure what they'd want to trade for Orton though. When your team is 0-4 you can pretty much kiss your season goodbye and Orton surely won't bring them back from the brink so why give up anything worthwhile in the draft?  Anyway, just a thought. What do you think?

They put out the week 3 QBR and Orton ranks 10th on the list at 66.2. Really? 10th on a day that we lost? On a day he wasn't clutch? On a day his regular QB rating was 67.6? On the whole his QBR is 47.2 putting him at 19th out of 31 QB's. His regular QB rating is 79.1 putting him at 24th on the list of QB's out of 32. Seems to me the QBR isn't quite as accurate as the regular QB rating.

Mile High Report Top 10 Reasons Orton Should...

Be benched in favor of another QB:

10. The Fumble

9.  Our Defense isn't good enough to over come his mistakes.

8.  Orton isn't good enough to overcome our defenses mistakes.

7.  Tebow has God on his side, which no other team or player in the NFL can claim.

6.  Kyle Orton isn't as good looking as Tim Tebow or Brady Quinn, and we all know that good looks is a major indicator of success in any profession.

5.  Brady Quinn deserves another shot. (hahah...snigger, snigger...oh, that was funny).

4.  His beard isn't as good as Tebow's and Brady Quinn never needs to shave.

3.  5-19 or whatever his record is.

2.  He won't be on the team next year so why play him now?

1.  He's just not that exciting to watch and this sport is all about entertainment (and winning).

Mile High Report Von's Happy Dance

Does anyone know what Von is doing after he sacks the QB?  There seems to be a consistent dance theme to his little post sack celebration but I can't quite make out what it's supposed to be.

Anyone?

Anyone?

P.S. I looked at posting this as a fanshot, but none of the fanshot content subjects seemed to encompass a quick question, so decided to do a fanpost. Then the fanpost told me I couldn't submit it because it wasn't long enough.  Help, I'm stuck in Limbo.  Any suggestions as to where I might pose a similar question in the future and be MHR blogger etiquette friendly?

Gotta love these kinda draft picks.

Mile High Report Some Quick Notes

Only two DT's have been between the beginning of the 4th round and over half way through the 6th round and one was a grade 30.

The Broncos took a safety with their first pick in the 4th round.  Grade 75.  A few picks before that, the Bills picked up a safety. Grade 54.  Thirteen picks later, the Jags pick a safetly, grade 30.  In the 5th round, Safety's started dropping like flies.  6 were taken.

A guy with a grade of 30 will be picked and two picks later, a guy with a grade of 80 will be picked.

The draft is highly subjective, and one man's trash, is another man's treasure.

Mile High Report Hedging our bets?

I was reading the post here on MHR about how Elway is Tebow's biggest fan. I've had this thought before but with Elway's comments about Tebow needing to improve his pocket passing in order to succeed and his other comments about how  the QB's in this draft all have holes and aren't on par with Stafford, Bradford, and Luck who he said are all elite QB's, it got me thinking a little more about it.

Mile High Report Something just occured to me

Xanders said they ahve 190 players on their draft board.  That's near twice as many as most other teams from what I've read.  Obviously a team doesn't put the best 190 players on their board because come the 191st pick in the draft they'll have run out of options as the other teams will have picked up those guys.  That's not to say that all teams think the best 190 players are the same.  There are over 224 draft picks when you include the compensatory ones.  7 rounds.  Many of the players on the Broncos' draft board may not even be drafted.  My question is this:

What happens at the end of the 7th round to all the Unrestricted Rookie Free Agents?

Usually there's a mad scramble to sign guys to qualifying offers to find undrafted gems, ala Rod Smith, and or camp fodder.  It doesn't look like we can just call them up and get a verbal that they'll be at our camp when the CBA gets worked out.  Maybe I missed this topic in another post somewhere.  I always looked forward to seeing which players also got called into camp that weren't drafted.  Anybody know what the deal is for this?

Interesting article and has some similar ramifications for the Broncos' 2nd pick. Also is an article that's bias is better for the Broncos in that the Carolina should take a QB #1.

Mile High Report Mock 3.2.45 Version 6.7 updated March 10, 2011

I'd be happy if we traded down a couple of spots and took whoever was available, be it Dareus, Fairly, Perterson, Miller, or one of a few other players. We still get a guy we’re looking for and add a few picks.

Possible non D-line with our first pick scenario (best case in my opinion):

If we trade down say 3-6 spots still keeping us in the top 10, then if Miller or Peterson is available, take him and pick up a quality DT with our early 2nd rounder, like Paea. I see a lot of mocks where one of these two guys, even Fairly are available up until the 8th or 9th spot. If we don’t take a D Lineman with our first pick, then that means there is one more guy out there for another team to choose meaning the D-line position will push down the draft and with how deep it is we’ll still get a good guy early in the 2nd and still end up wth a star at another position PLUS a few extra picks which we desparately need.

GO BRONCOS!!!
