He fits with the Texans scheme wise. Doesn't have a big arm (similar to Matt Schaub) but can run the bootleg with his mobility. Would have no problem acquiring him for a 6th/7th round pick. Provides additional competition for T.J. Yates since Matt Leinart is gone.

Baylor will still be a contender next year, but this is definitely good news.

Nothing new for any of us who followed AB's brief career at Texas, but lineup-specific stats suggest that when Bradley is paired up with Garnett or Rondo, the results are devastating on the defensive side.

His decision to go pro early has worked out. Ray Allen's injury gave him starting minutes for the Celtics and he proved himself as a very useful role player. Good for him.

"The men's and women's basketball programs at Baylor University are facing possible NCAA sanctions following an investigation that uncovered more than 1,200 impermissible phone calls and text messages during a 29-month span."

The NCAA is considering this a "major violation" due to the large number of impermissible calls/texts. Punishment could include loss of future scholarships for both mens/womens basketball.

Uh oh! Is anyone surprised though? I'm sure Rick Barnes and Bobby Knight are quietly celebrating at this revelation of Baylor cheating.

Couldn't have happened to a better guy.

"The Razorbacks coach was put on paid administrative leave on Thursday night less than seven hours after his boss, athletic director Jeff Long, learned Petrino had failed to disclose he had been riding with a female employee half his age when his motorcycle skidded off the road over the weekend."

Interesting graphic that came out of the annual MIT sports analytics conference. This is an NBA shot chart that basically tells you which shots net you the most points per attempt on average. While this graphic isn't surprising, it further confirms the value of the corner three and scoring inside.

What a game for stat lovers. Durant's 51 and Westbrook's 40 marks the first time teammates have gone for 40+ points since some other duo named Jordan and Pippen. Also, Serge Ibaka had an unconventional triple-double: 14 pts, 15 rebs, 11 blks

Burnt Orange Nation Texas vs Baylor Open Thread

TEXAS (13-7, 3-4 Big 12) at #6/7 Baylor (18-2, 5-2 Big 12)
Saturday, January 28, 2012 • 12 pm (Central)
Ferrell Center (10,284) • Waco, Texas

From Texas Sports:

TELEVISION: The game will be televised nationally by CBS. Verne Lundquist (pxp) and Clark Kellogg (analyst) will call the action.

SERIES: Texas leads, 157-79. Last meeting: Texas 60-54 (March 5, 2011; Waco).

Series vs. Baylor
Texas has faced Baylor more times (236 entering Saturday) than any other opponent. In fact, UT’s opening four games in the school’s first year of basketball (1906) came against the Bears (Texas won all four). The only time Texas and Baylor did not meet since 1906 was in 1908, when the Longhorns did not field a team. The Horns have won 51 of the last 62 meetings between the two schools dating back to the 1982-83 season.

Right now Texas is in the "First Four Out". If you ask me, this is good news, seeing how we are somehow very close to getting in despite a really mediocre resume. This tells me we are only a couple of quality wins in the Big XII away from avoiding bubble team status.

Cowboys Ride For Free Analyzing the Final Coaches Poll and Harris Poll

The following is an outstanding FanPost that was written by goingforthecorner. It's as good of a breakdown as I've seen. Enjoy.

If you haven't already, check out the final results to the USA Coaches Poll and Harris Poll. The final results of each year are transparent, so you can view exactly what voter voted which team where.

Link to USA Coaches Poll

Link to Harris Poll (.pdf format)

Every year, you're going to see the "WTF!?" outliers in the voting. Alabama/OSU ended up in a very close margin, but I wanted to see if those outliers made a difference.

Quickly, on how to calculate the final BCS Standings, you average the two polls and computers. There are 59 voters in the coaches poll and 115 voters in the Harris Poll. For both polls, for each voter that ranks a team #1, that team earns 25 points. Then 24 points for the team ranked #2, 23 points for the team ranked #3, and so on. This means that the maximum amount of points you can get in the Coaches and Harris Poll is 1475 and 2875 points respectively (you can see this is exactly what LSU received).

Before we go into the outliers, I think we can first establish that there's no valid argument into ranking OSU behind Stanford, Oregon, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Boise St., and Houston when you look at overall resume and number of quality wins... yet it happened. Specific eye-opening votes in the Coaches Poll:

- Nick Satan ranking #3 Stanford ahead of #4 OSU
- Gary Pinkel ranking #3 Stanford ahead of #4 OSU (I guess his SEC loyalty has already set in)
- Troy Calhoun (Air Force head coach) ranking #3 Stanford and #4 Arkansas ahead of #5 OSU

Specific eye-opening votes in the Harris Poll:
- Scott Johnson ranking #3 Oregon and #4 Boise State ahead of #5 OSU
- Derrick Mayes ranking #3 Stanford, #4 Arkansas, and #5 Boise State ahead of #6 OSU
- Craig Morton ranking #3 Stanford and #4 Oregon ahead of #5 OSU
- Jeff Van Note ranking #3 Wisconsin and #4 Oregon ahead of #5 OSU
- Bob Wagner ranking #3 Stanford, #4 Boise State, and #5 Oregon ahead of #6 OSU
- George Wine ranking #3 Stanford, #4 Boise State, and #5 Houston ahead of #6 OSU (the ultimate WTF!? voter here)

- Jim Walden was the only voter on either poll to vote Alabama lower than #3 (they are #4 on his poll)

Knowing how the final BCS standings are calculated, I was curious to see what would happen if you adjusted the final numbers for these outliers. What if all the outlier votes in both polls were at least changed to OSU being ranked #3 (along with that one voter who slotted Bama at #4? Here are your final standings:

ACTUAL BCS STANDINGS

Alabama Oklahoma St.
Harris Poll: 0.9471 0.9231
Coaches Poll: 0.9485 0.9268
Computers: 0.930 0.950
BCS RANKING: 0.9419 0.9333

ALL OUTLIERS CHANGED TO #3

Alabama Oklahoma St.
Harris Poll: 0.9475 0.9322
Coaches Poll: 0.9485 0.9315
Computers: 0.930 0.950
BCS RANKING: 0.9420 0.9379

It's a lot closer, but still alas, still no cigar. Just out of curiosity, what if half of these outliers were changed to OSU #3 and the other half to OSU #2?

HALF OF OUTLIERS CHANGED TO #2, HALF TO #3
Alabama Oklahoma St.
Harris Poll: 0.9477 0.9367
Coaches Poll: 0.9485 0.9339
Computers: 0.930 0.950
BCS RANKING: 0.9420 0.9402

Even in this completely unreasonable scenario (you still have to respect the outlier votes with regards to Alabama being ahead of OSU), OSU still barely falls short.

So there you have it, Poke fans. If you can take any solace in the final voting turnout, you can say that you weren't screwed over by the outliers. In the end, there were just too many coaches and Harris voters that voted Alabama #2 and wanted to see that rematch (or at least are biased toward the SEC).

Just enough voters to overcome the computer lead OSU had.

Congrats on a great year!

P.S. If you so happen to find anymore 28-year old QBs with college eligibility, please forward those names to Mack Brown. TIA

Former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abused eight young men and the current Penn State athletic director and another administrative official did absolutely nothing about it. In fact, they lied in court that he never knew about it even though complaints were brought to him.

"Attorney General Linda Kelly called him "a sexual predator who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys.""

"It is also a case about high-ranking university officials who allegedly failed to report the sexual assault of a young boy after the information was brought to their attention, and later made false statements to a grand jury," Kelly said.

Ugly, ugly story, and I think everyone wants to hear Joe Pa's reaction to this.

Was Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson a UT alum?

By now you may have already seen the absolutely heartbreaking image and video of Tumilson's dog lying down and mourning next to the casket his owner rests in. I noticed in the video (and the picture of him in the image) that there were a few pictures of him wearing a UT shirt. Just wondering if anyone knew if he was a Texas graduate. Would be great to know that a hero like him attended our school.

Tremendous and very informative insight from Coach Brown about Garrett Gilbert, last season's failure, the Longhorn Network, former OC Greg Davis, and Texas A&M going to the SEC.

This is totally the real Mack Brown.

9 months ago Ut_logo_tiny goingforthecorner 3 comments

We already know it would be bad for their football program. Turns out going to the SEC would also require them to essentially take a pay cut. Now I really hope they make the move.

"Texas A&M and Team No. 14 are expected to receive a pro rata share equal to what the SEC’s 12 current universities are making: an average of about $18 million in league payouts. (Individual universities can make more money from their separate television deals.)

The SEC deal, which ends in 2025, has a few windows when it can be renegotiated but no one from the SEC or the networks expects any radical change.

So the notion that Texas A&M will see a significant financial gain by going to the SEC is not true. While the SEC offers more long-term security, the Big 12 could end up with a television deal in four years that surpasses the annual payout of the SEC, according to Joel Lulla, a New York-based lawyer who is the Big 12’s television consultant. Starting next season, A&M is guaranteed $20 million of total revenue from the Big 12. Once the Big 12 negotiates its deal that expires in four years, Texas A&M would be poised to make more money. Texas A&M also has to deal with a potentially significant buyout that will be in the neighborhood of $15 million.

"Economically, unless the SEC opens their TV deals to the extent where they make more than a pro rata increase, it makes no sense at all," Lulla said."

Burnt Orange Nation 2011 McDonald's All-American Game Open Thread

Here's your opportunity to see future Longhorn star point guard Myck Kabongo in live action, along with the other top recruits for next year.

ESPN has released a few articles for your reading pleasure.

Player Comparisons

Myck Kabongo and Patrick Mills Not only are both natives of other countries (Kabongo of Canada and Mills of Australia), but both can push the ball at high speeds and deliver the ball to teammates. Plus, the future Longhorn and current Portland Trail Blazer score by getting to the rim and cause havoc by getting in the lane at will.

Matchups to Watch

Myck Kabongo vs. Quinn Cook
All-Star games are made for guards, and Kabongo's speed and quickness with the basketball make the Texas signee tailor made for this type of setting. But don't discount Cook, who is never shy about looking for his own offense and comes in with a chip on his shoulder after the Duke signee's selection was questioned by so many

Thought I'd share some of his tweets on TT:

"Tristan Thompson's offensive limitations looked very clear. Scouts want to know how he'll score in the NBA? Cannot post-up, create or shoot."

"Problem w/Tristan Thompson already announcing he's returning is he's a 20-year old freshman. Better come back a substantially better player." (I didn't realize he was already 20)

"If Tristan Thompson doesn't come back with some new offensive wrinkles, NBA executives might not be so sympathetic. Needs to be careful."

"Tristan Thompson is a hot name. Some NBA teams project him as a lottery pick. Don't think his stock can improve, either stays same or drops."

"Some flashbacks with Elias Harris (projected 1st rounder, returned, stock bombed) here w/Tristan Thompson. Hope he doesn't regret this move."
