Calipari one-and-done at UK?

"The New York Daily News is mentioning first-year Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari in the mix as well." "...the rumor is fueled by his close relationships with presumptive No. 1 pick John Wall and NBA free-agent-to-be LeBron James."

SEC spring practice schedule

Tennessee: Practice Begins March 18 Orange & White Game April 17

Pre-Preseason #34

Derek Dooley has work to do. This was going to be a bit of a rocky season anyway with more work to be done to beef up the depth and come up with the playmakers to compete for the East title, but this is still a good enough team to push for a New Year’s Day bowl. The offensive line needs help, Nick Stephens has to prove he can step in at quarterback for Jonathan Crompton, and Bryce Brown has to live up to his prep hype to carry the ground game. The defense gets back seven starters but loses SS Eric Berry and LB Rico McCoy. The schedule is a bear, but most of the big games are at home getting Oregon, Florida, Alabama, and Ole Miss in Knoxville. However, the Vols have to go to LSU and Georgia in back to back weeks. How’s this for a six game stretch? Oregon, Florida, UAB (exhale), at LSU, at Georgia. Alabama. Welcome to the gig, Derek.

UK vulnerable to slow down game?

Of Kentucky's close calls this season, at least six of the games were kept at a slower than normal pace (for the 2010 Wildcats, that means anything below 71.1 possessions a game). Last night's win was no exception: although 'Bama lost, the Tide did not roll and slowed the game down considerably as UK only had 66.725 possession in the 66-55 win. According to freshman Eric Bledsoe, this strategy is nothing new to John Calipari's squad and quite frankly, not appreciated. "It is really frustrating [when teams slow us down]," said Bledsoe. So going forward into the second half stretch of conference play and the NCAA tournament, is this the best way to try and beat the Wildcats? In their upcoming seven games, two teams really stand out as possible to make UK play a 40 minute half-court game: South Carolina (tempo is slightly lower than UK but has beaten the 'Cats before by limiting the game to a 69 possession affair) and Georgia (a team that operates at a snail like 65.5 pace). However, in the NCAA tournament, this could become an even bigger problem if UK is matched up with a team like Northern Iowa; the Panthers operate at a glacial pace (60 possessions) and are well equipped to run the shot clock down and score in the half-court. Note: Tennessee games average 70.7 possessions per game. Pomeroy's calculations suggest our game against Kentucky will be 74 possessions. It is notable that four of our five losses this season were in games with 70 or more possesions.

Scott Boras on Colin Cowherd

Did anyone listen to the entire enterview? They were talking about Johnny Damon and his current situation, but I couldn't finish listening. Did he mention the Braves at all?

Tatum has sprained right ankle

According to an interview with Tony Jones on the Tony Basilio show, they are not yet ruling Tatum out against Kentucky. With an impending MRI, he's obviously not in the clear yet, but it could be that his injury is not nearly as bad as it looked.

Vols QB battle buzz

Chris Low opines on who will likely start at QB next year: Had the previous staff stayed, I would have said the freshman, Tyler Bray. But I think with this staff, it will be a little more open. N...

A Look into DeMar Dorsey's Past

This isn't directly related to Tennessee anymore, but Kiffin did recruit Dorsey to Tennessee. Even after Florida quit recruiting him, Kiffin continued, albeit at another school. Considering, the incidents with Nu'Keese & Co. and the fact that Kiffin was still interesting in someone like this, I think it can be said that we were headed down a perilous path with Kiffin. Maybe it will be a benefit in the long run that Kiffin left when he did.

Running Backs coach

UT is in talks with Chuck Smith to fill the last remaning vacancy as a defensive line coach. Every position has been accounted for except for running backs. Any guesses as to who will take on...

Derek Dooley's charm helps win over James Stone for UT

Wow, this kid sounds really impressive. He wears bowties, he turned down Harvard, he dislikes Kiffin - and smart enough to choose Tennessee! He overcame a pretty significant obstacle in his life to get here too. Very glad to have him!

Tennessee to hire Boise State's Wilcox

[update] KBOI is reporting that Wilcox has informed the team that he is in fact accepting the Tennessee DC job. (link fixed)

Steve Rubio, UT's Recruiting Assistant, is interviewing at USC today

hmmmmm [Update from Will - 2/2/10 9:48 AM EST] - Brent Hubbs reports this morning that Rubio has turned down USC's offer and will stay in Knoxville ($) Score one for the good guys

John Wall Is Frustrated

As talented as those freshmen are, I think they lack the experience and poise to win a Championship. And when your best player is ignoring the head coach, and possibly already starting to think about the NBA. Things can go south in a hurry. Fortunately, it might not expose itself until the tournament, and Cal has enough time to regain their composure. But I think they stumble a few more times down the stretch... *cough* 2/13

Brian Williams on when he will be back on the team. I'd like to know when he will be back in english class.

Available Football Scholarships

After the commitment of three players today, it seems like we only have a few spots open, and more potential recruits than available slots. I heard we can sign up to 30, but only 27 are allowed to...

Vols pluck junior college tight end Mychal Rivera

Tight end Mychal Rivera (Santa Clarita, Calif./College of the Canyons) has committed to Tennessee, ESPN's JC Shurburtt reports. The 6-foot-4 240-pounder picked the Vols over Kansas State. He made his decision Wednesday night during a meeting with Vols assistants at his home. South Carolina, Syracuse and Utah State also extended scholarship offers. Rivera signed with Oregon out of Birmingham High in Los Angeles before spending this season at the College of the Canyons.

Tobias Harris (6-8, 210) PF 2010, Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills, signed with Tennessee Harris scored early and often. He ran the floor and finished in transition, shot runners in the lane, hit mid range pull ups, knocked down a three on the move, slashed and dunked drop off passes along the baseline and had a couple offensive rebound put backs. Harris defensive rebounded and led the break at times as well. He must become a more consistent 3-point shooter, which will improve as he works to be shot ready on the catch and make more fluid moves off the dribble -- although he can beat most power forwards with straight-line drives. He has improved his ballhandling and is a good passer out of double teams. In the future, I can see Harris developing into a small forward -- especially if he can defend on the perimeter. Harris communicates with teammates, plays with passion and never gives up on the play. Harris should be a contributor from Day 1 for the Vols if he continues to improve.
