Dawkins/Atwater comparisons

Brian Dawkins played 13 seasons with the Eagles.

Steve Atwater played for 11 seasons with the Broncos.

Dawkins: 7 Pro Bowl appearances

Atwater: 8 Pro Bowl appearances

Both are (eventual) Hall of Fame Safties that are known for their hard hitting. And the jerseys of both players will be the kind of special jersey that people will buy and wear to games for years to come. I doubt that most of the Bronco faithful is pissed that he spent his final year with the Jets. In fact, even though Atwater won a superbowl during his last year with the Broncos, his playing time was reduced significantly. At least we got to see Dawk go after a season-long performance of putting in 60 minutes each and every game. (or "every doggone play" as he likes to say)

And by the way, after Atwater completed his injury-riddled swansong with the Jets, he went back and did the ceremonial 1-day signing w/ Denver to announce his retirement. He said: "This is the way I wanted to go out. I bleed orange and will always bleed orange and blue."

I cant wait to hear B Dawk utter those words about Philly - because I will cheer my ass off. He deserves it.

SanTOEnio Holmes

Call me crazy for caring, but I honestly don't think Santonio Holmes placed his right foot down in the endzone for the game winning TD. It was my initial thought as I watched it during game speed, as it probably was for mostly everyone else since the NFL speed is so ridiculously crazy.

But then the replays of his feet made me change my mind and concede that he scored.... ......until I saw that that one angle.

I'm talking about the angle that looked like the footage was being taken from where the right Offensive Tackle would have been. It was only shown once on TV, but it convinced me that I was right. (OK maybe convince is a strong term - but it made me feel pretty confident about it)

It's my firm belief that Santonio's right foot was resting on his left foot, and didn't actually touch the ground... at all!! As I kept my eye on his right toes during the entire clip (from that one angle) - I clearly saw that his cleats were caught up and there was space between his right foot and the ground throughout the whole play. All other angles make it difficult to notice if there's any air under his foot, except this one.

I have no love for the Cardinals (who just beat my team), and I have absolutely nothing against the Steelers - I'd rather see them win it all before I watch another ring go to the Cowboys, Giants, or Patriots.

I'm just wondering why no one else is even debating this. I went onto the Arizona blog after the game and unless I'm missing something, there wasn't one comment about whether or not they were robbed.

To be fair, if this call went the other way and the officials called back the TD - I honestly think there would have been more of an outrage and I would understand why. The one angle I showed isn't "overwhelming evidence" or whatever its called in the rulebook.

All I'm saying is that don't you think this is worth maybe a little discussion? Or an ESPN mention here or there? Oh yeah - that assumes people outside of Pittsburgh and Arizona actually cared.

Here's a pic on the play - yeah you can make the argument that his foot touched the ground either before or after this one nanosecond when the picture was taken. But I still say that the other angle showed it was like this throughout the whole play:

Commercial Troubles

I couldn't help but feel somewhat happy that there are still some open slots for the Super Bowl commercials. Why? Because I am trying to tell myself that the rest of the nation is just not that interested in this match-up, and would have much rather preferred a Steelers-Eagles game.

I can't lie - I am trying to console myself because the wounds still have not healed. So logic is most certainly lost in this argument. And to be honest - it takes a serious gut-check to get myself back into the football mood for the Super Bowl once my team gets bounced when they were so close. Other teams' fans would probably disagree and call me a front runner, but most of those fans haven't watched their team get this close 5 times out of the last 8 years. I know you fellow Iggles fans can relate. But the fact remains - it still sucks big time to watch the pre-Super Bowl hype, knowing that our team came so close....

Well anyway, I think there's no doubt that the economy is the driving factor in this TV commercial shortage, but..... I will continue to try and deflect all this pain. And therefore I will pretend to believe that the reason for the low sales is because the nation really wanted the Eagles to be in this game.

And so did I.

Glass Half Full

Before I get to the point of simply rooting for the big plays, big hits, and spoilers.... I'm going to think back to last year and cross my fingers. (See below.) Personally, Im not ready to throw in the towel yet, even though I happen to agree with a lot of the harsh comments out there. And I know that 99% of you on this site will also root for the Birds regardless of their record. Hell - I still wear the Eagles jersey I bought when they were 3-13. (Charlie Garner by the way)

My (perhaps warped) logic: Last year, the Vagiants lost their 1st game 45-35 to the Cowboys. They also incurred injuries to Umenyiora, Jacobs, and Eli. Eli separated his shoulder during the game, and the NYG defense was horrible. Then the next week at Green Bay wasnt that much better. Bad penalties and 21 unanswered points by the Packers made the Vagiants 0-2 for the first time in over a decade. People were calling for Coughlin's head, questioning Eli, and calling the team the most dysfunctional team in the league.

And we all know how they finished the season.

So my question is: "Right now, are we better than what they were, at this point last year?"

I hope so.
