MLB might eliminate 'fake to third throw to first' play
This is the first I'd heard that the rule was under review. Apparently, the owners want to get rid of it but the players union wants more time.
Whenever I see this play, I can't help but remember Jason Bay getting fooled on a fake to third throw to first play. It was the year where he almost set the record for most stolen bases in a year without getting caught. At the time, he already had the record in hand and just needed to get through the last few games
Igarashi Cut; Fox and Evans Next?
Couple items from Beertemple's twitter feed:
Looks like #Pirates are making some cuts today. Nick Evans, Jake Fox have been in manager's office.
#Pirates also have cut Igarashi.
1909 Honus Wagner Card Up for Auction
Should fetch between $1M and $1.5M.
I'm not a collector, but I'm sure some of the regulars on here are into this sort of thing so I thought I'd pass the link along. From what I understand, the reason Wagner's cards are so rare is because back then they came in tobacco rather than bubble gum. Wagner didn't chew so he asked them to stop including his card
#Pirates reassign RHP Daniel Cabrera, RHP Tim Wood, 1B Jeff Clement, OF Brandon Boggs to minor-league camp. Roster at 39.
Pirates Cut Chase D'Arnaud, Anderson Hernandez, Eight Others
There's been some discussion the last few days about the Pirates roster getting a bit unwieldy because they still had everyone not named Gerrit Cole in camp. Well we finally have a new round of cuts. Dejan Kovacevic announced the following on his Twitter feed:
#Pirates option SS Chase d'Arnaud, LHP Rudy Owens, LHP Jeff Locke, RHP Duke Welker, reassign six to reduce roster to 48. No surprise cuts.
And
Those reassigned: OF Robbie Grossman, INF Anderson Hernandez, C Tony Sanchez, C Ramon Cabrera, RHP Mike Crotta, RHP Logan Kensing
UPDATE by Charlie: Games are starting this week in minor-league camp, so it makes sense that there would be a round of cuts now. The only ones who are even mildly surprising are D'Arnaud and especially Hernandez, since they could have been in competition for the utility infielder job.
New Info on FAN's Pirate postgame
Bob Smizik has some new info on the FAN's plans for Pirate broadcasts this season. He says they will not be bringing in Rocco DeMaro. Instead, post-game duties are likely to be handled by Dan Zangrilli, formerly the play-by-play guy for the Altoona Curve. Smizik also says the FAN is looking to have a two man team working post-games, and mentions Kevin Orie and Sid Bream as potential fits.
Sid Bream?!?! Are you kidding me?
Finally, Smizik has some additional bad news -- that the FAN will move Andrew Filliponi's time slot back instead of simply removing him from the air. Chris Mueller will be moved back as well. Figures, the one listenable guy they have on the air will be moving into the 2-6AM slot.
