via Keith Law's Twitter, ESPN reports:

Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano, two of the more attractive commodities on the New York Mets in a season in which so many players have gotten hurt, were both claimed on waivers -- and then withdrawn by the Mets, meaning that neither player can be traded, sources told ESPN.com on Wednesday.

The Mets placed Sheffield and Feliciano on waivers on Aug. 7, and after each was claimed, the Mets pulled them back. It is not known which teams were awarded the claims, or how seriously the Mets considered dealing one or both players.

Mets Discuss Sheets, Pettitte

From ESPN's Insider Rumor Central:

"The Mets are discussing Ben Sheets as a possible candidate for their rotation in case negotiations with Oliver Perez fall through, Newsday reported.

The newspaper reported the Mets do not want to end up bidding against themselves for Perez, but it's doubtful that a three-year deal, in the $30-million range will get it done. Perez is represented by Scott Boras, who steered another client, Derek Lowe, to the Braves rather than accept a deal with the Mets. Two of the most intriguing names still available are Sheets and Andy Pettitte, with the Mets only recently showing interest in the former Brewers ace. A person familiar with the situation told Newsday that Sheets is now being discussed, but it's unclear what the parameters of such a deal would be. As for Pettitte, Newsday said the Mets are not involved in any talks with the former Yankee."

Here's hoping Omar and his brain trust come to understand the benefits of Sheets over Perez.
