I am a Steeler Fan for life. 6'7 250lbs fanatic. I live and always have lived in Florida all my life. I always get asked (why you like the Steeler's, and your from Florida?). The only Florida team we had at that time was Miami and I just did not like them. The 2nd reason was when Tampa Bay came aboard they suck. Plus I've always hated what they did to Doug Williams. I have only went three Steeler games and we are 2-1. I love to talk football and meet people that like to do the same. My favorite color is black & gold. If I'm not watchin football then I'm BBQ'n. Basketball keeps me somewhat occupied. I work in the Manufacturing business which sucks right now. The big moment in my life was losing my virginity and watchin the Steelers win the Superbowl.

Behind the Steel Curtain Let's move on women. Steeler Nation

Let's move on women of the so called Steelers Nation or imposter haters. I do not know. It is over. Ben should not wear this burden of sexual assault or rape. All of these women in both cases are broke or shady women. I understand if you have evidence of guilt or something but all you have is a druken women allegation. I'm also tired of society not holding women more accuntable for their actions. I think the scruples of women have just gone to hell and a hand basket. If this girl was half way decent she would not have in the bar. Ben R. is gulity of being stupid and young and dumb. i hope he has learned a lesson. Go to descent places and act descent to get with descent women. It just makes me sick to hear some people still passing judgement after a DA has decided not to press charges. Ben is gulity of being drunk and trying to get with a drunk college student who was about to drop out of school. If he was a student on campus she would have been one and done. I f you hate then you just do not want to hear the truth. I do not think Ben should go on being reckless but since it's over let it be over. I hope he takes of the idiot cap and put on his thinking cap. I'm outta here. grow up fans.

Behind the Steel Curtain Still Hope Without Holmes.

I know everyone is scratching their head about the trade with Santonio Holmes. The thing is that if we are going to win another Superbowl we will not do it with the same players. It took some adjustments and Santonio just so happen to be the one to be let go. He had off the field problems since the day we drafted him. He was definitely a descent player as far as being a big play maker. I think we have the receivers to get the job done. However, its going to come down to our draft and some players will need to step up.I do not think we need to draft a wide receiver. I would have a long talk with Limas Sweed and let him know it is now or never. If this guy can step up and make a name for himself and not be the bust of the year we can make a run. Stefan Logan can take over the punt return duties altogether. Mike Wallace will become our play maker and Randal El can be our 3rd down  converter. The role Limas Sweed can play is the role Mike Wallace had last year and be the breakout kid. He has what it takes out side of maybe this illness that I do not know much about. If however it is something that is more like a fever than a sickle cell he can be something to our club. I think Holmes was going to be let go and the end of this season anyway. It just don't make any sense to why he was not given a contract sooner. MVP great stats it is what it is. Moving on, since we did not bring Parker back with the lost off Holmes we need to draft a impact player. This means the best athlete in the draft first round. I like Taylor Mays or CJ Spiller. We can grab a wide receiver 2nd or 3rd round. I also like Ronald Mcclain if any of these guys are available. My conclusion is do not press the panic button we will still be a force to be reckon with. who knows maybe we will bring him back next year.

Behind the Steel Curtain Why not Willie?

My fellow Steeler Nation, I must ask this question. Why don't we sign Willie Parker? The guy is one the quickiest running backs in the league. I am sure you all have heard that this is a two back system league. If you do not have two running backs in your stock you will not get to the big game. Parker has proven to be a viable asset to the team. How many of you really think Rashard is going to run the entire season without getting hurt. Show of hands! It will not happen however if we resign Parker to a very deserving 3 year contract I am sure we will not regret it. Rashard is a work in progress. If we want to reestablish the run in Pittsburgh we need Willie. Unless our 1st round pick is going to be a running back. In that case then we will have another season with being a suspect backfield it Troy isn't in. Your Thoughts Please.

Behind the Steel Curtain Montgomery to coach WRs

My first question would be. Can you do anything to get Limas Sweed to catch the ball. What is the 411 on this guy? I think we have an explosive tandem of WR's and if we can get a good coach it's a plus. If anyone knows anything about this guy please enlighten me. The only thing I know is he went to Duke and coached. We also need a coach that will emphasis bringing in Stefan Logan on some of the offensive schemes.

Behind the Steel Curtain Strong Safety vs Free Safety

I recently wrote three fan post discussing the possible draft prospects at the # 1 spot. If you have read them you know my feelings is to draft a Safety at that spot. I had three Safeties in mind Eric Berry, Earl Thomas, & Myron Rolle. I reviewed several of the comments and took all of them into consideration. I felt the need to define the roles of the Strong Safety and the Free Safety. It is important to consider what the need is for our defense. When you have decided on the need for the defense then select the best individual for that spot.We all would like Eric Berry but as some of the comments stated at that post, " How realistic is it?". Let me define the roles and open up for discussion.

Strong safety

The strong safety tends to be a bit larger and stronger than the free safety. However, the word strong is used because he is tasked to handle the "strong side" of the offense, the side where the tight end lines up. The strong safety tends to play closer to the line and assist in stopping the run. He may also be responsible for covering a player, such as a running back or fullback or h-back, who comes out of the backfield to receive a pass. A strong safety's duties are a hybrid of those belonging to a linebacker and those of the other defensive backs, in that he both covers the pass and stops the run. One of the most notable retired strong safeties is Ken Houston.

Free safety

The free safety tends to be smaller and faster than the strong safety. His job tends to be to keep some distance from the line of scrimmage, watch the play unfold, and follow the ball. On pass plays, the free safety is expected to assist the cornerback on his side and to close the distance to the receiver by the time the ball reaches him. Offenses tend to use the play action pass specifically to make the free safety expect a run play, which would draw him closer to the line of scrimmage, and reduce his effectiveness as a pass defender. If the offense puts a receiver in the slot, then the free safety may be called upon to cover that receiver. Free safeties occasionally blitz as well. When this happens, the pressure on the quarterback is often very severe since a blitz by a defensive back is not usually anticipated. Free safeties, because of their speed and deep coverage, are often prone to catching interceptions. [2] Standout retired free safeties include Paul Krause, Larry Wilson, and Willie Wood.

Now that we have defined the roles of a safety we now know what type of athlete we would like at the Free Safety position. I think Troy would be considered  the Strong Safety of all Strong Safeties. We need to place on the defense a individual that can be the Free Safety of all Free Safeties.  Let me know. what you think about those individuals listed now?

Behind the Steel Curtain Safe Safety Bet Myron Rolle

The last post I did was about another possible # 1 draft pick that would give us some security at the safety position. I want to propose a maybe long shot. I do not mean a long shot in terms of ability but maybe a long shot in terms of draft selection. Myron Rolle will also be up for selection in the draft. Keep a good eye on him. It simply depends on what kind of day he has at the combine. Many may think that he may have lost a step or two because of his desire to pursue higher learning. However, this may not be the case. This also maybe exactly what we are looking for. I just want to give the fans some hope. Last season in my eyes exposed the simple fact that Troy is awesome on our defense. He needs someone to hold it together in that back field. I do not propose that Eric Berry, Earl Thomas, Myron Rolle can fill the shoes of Troy. I simply say now we know how good Troy is lets get him some help a that position. Its like Ben is our QB but lets get him some help at back up via Dennis Dixon. I have got all the faith in Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin, but I just want you guys to be as surprised as I will be if these guys are available and we don't pick them up. This must mean whatever selection they pick it must be a dynamic player. I have always loved what the Steeler's have done on draft day. Some of the players we have on the squad today may not be as dynamic as we would like them to be. Some players just take more time to grow up in the game. Lawerence Timmons, Limas Sweed, just to name a few. Were these picks bad? Not really. Limas could catch the ball better but what if next season is his season. Lawerence should maybe have started full time at ILB. Maybe next season is his season. We do not know but what we do know is the possibilities. The picks are not the bust just the players. Here is what Myron looks like.

Despite postponing his NFL career to study for a year at Oxford University, Myron Rolle ranks among the top safeties entering the 2010 NFL Draft. And while some may question whether his absence from football will negatively affect his ability to perform, those that know Myron, including legendary speed and performance trainer, Coach Tom Shaw, recognize it simply as time to further enhance his abilities and hone his skills.

Shaw, known for training the last nine Super Bowl MVPs and 118 first-round NFL draft picks, has been working with Myron since he graduated from Florida State in 2008. As a result, Myron’s speed, strength and agility has not only been maintained, but significantly improved, which will solidify his place among the top safeties selected in the 2010 NFL Draft.

“Myron has trained along side several of my NFL clients. His skill sets are comparable to any defensive back that plays on Sundays. His athleticism, mental toughness and knowledge of professional defensive schemes will assure him to be a success at the next level of competition.”
— Tom Shaw

Performance Measures

Current Florida State
Height: 6′2 6′2
Weight: 215 lbs. 217 lbs.

During his formative years, Myron attended the Hun School of Princeton, where his athletic achievements on the football field gained national recognition. Following his senior season in 2006, ESPN’s recruiting services ranked him as the number one high school football prospect in the country, and his remarkable abilities earned him a staggering 83 scholarship offers from Division I institutions.

Myron ultimately chose to attend Florida State University where he continued to excel on the field as a safety and three-year starter.

In 2008, he earned Associated Press 3rd team All-American honors and was named 2nd team All-ACC by the Football Writers Association of America. After a 2008 regular season game against the rival University of Miami Hurricanes, Florida State’s longtime defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews remarked that Myron played “the best and most complete game” that he had ever seen a safety play during his 25 years of coaching.

Following the 2008 regular season, the Florida State coaching staff presented him with the Bill McGrotha/Spirit Humanitarian Award. Myron was also placed on the watch lists for the Thorpe, Bednarik, Nagurski and Lott trophies, all highly coveted defensive honors.

Behind the Steel Curtain The Earl Thomas  Effect

In my last post I posed a question to Steeler fans over this great planet of ours. What do you think about the idea of drafting Eric Berry #1. It seems that most of the comments were very predictable. The outcome of drafting Eric Berry was not disputed by anyone. It seemed to be a well liked idea. The only negative comments was the possibility of it even happening. I would like to give you some hope. Eric Berry may not be the only salvation for the Steelers at the Safety position. Has anyone heard of Earl Thomas? Here is an athlete barring a mirror image of Eric Berry. It looks as though this kid could fall to the 18th pick just in time for the Steelers to pick up. I would also like to state again that Ryan Clark is not a bad Safety. I just believe he has hit that wall and he is as good as he is going to get. We also need more depth at that position. Let me know what you think about this possible # 1 draft pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Overview:

Earl Thomas only played two seasons at the University of Texas, but they were two terrific seasons.  Thomas was a standout immediately during his red-shirt freshman year.  Thomas originally came to Texas as a cornerback recruit out of high school.  Thomas accounted for 134 tackles, 5 forced fumbles, and 10 interceptions in his two seasons at Texas.  Thomas started all 27 games of his college career, and tied a Texas record this year with 8 interceptions. He was a consensus first-team All-America selection in 2009.  As a safety prospect Thomas is the full package.  He excels both in pass coverage and against the run.  He's versatile enough to play any defensive back position.

Strengths:

Earl Thomas has a great blend of speed and athletic ability.  He has decent size to play safety in the NFL, especially considering he's only 20 years old and likely still has to grow into his body.  He's versatile enough to play either safety position or even cornerback.  Thomas is a solid tackler who can diagnose the run quickly.  He has a very aggressive style of play.  Thomas excels in man coverage and has terrific ball skills.  Thomas is also a play-maker with the ball in his hands, and always a threat to score.

Weakness:

Thomas will enter the NFL with less game experience than most highly drafted prospects.  At times one of his strengths, his aggressiveness can come back to bite him.  He will occasionally over-pursue and jump routes.  Occasionally he will try to knock out the ball carrier and not wrap up.  He will need to add some weight, and I would suspect some strength.

Analysis:

Earl Thomas won't have to wait long on draft day to hear his name.  Right now his stock appears to safely be in the top 20, but not far from the top 10.  After the combine Thomas could see his stock rise even higher.  He should be one of those prospects who puts on a show at the combine.  Chances are he will remain a safety, free or strong will depend on the need of the team who drafts him.  There is however the chance a team will move him to cornerback to utilize his coverage skills.  Wherever Thomas plays he should make his future team very happy.

Behind the Steel Curtain Eric Berry #1 Draft pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers?

The Superbowl is over and the next best thing to the season of 2010 starting is the 2010 draft. I have been looking at where all the players are being ranked and the personal mock drafts. I have decided to post this question to every fan of the Pittsburgh Steeler's. I heard the worries of Casey Hampton's resinging and the concerns of the O-Line. It seems amazing that people seem to not look at the present facts. I would like to broaden everyone's horizon to what happen to the Superbowl champs of 2009. The first and most important thing happen was the lost of Troy Polamalu. It may seem to some that one player cannot be such an impact that it would cause the Steeler's to not be able to compete for the 2010 Superbowl let alone be put out of playoff contention. The answer to that question is the second cause of them not being able to get back to the Superbowl and that was Special Teams.  I knew that when I saw some of the players being let go that our special team was not going to be the same. The best addition was Stefan Logan. However, several players were let go and then brought back. CornerBack Madison was one of them. This was fixed and I do not think we will have this problem again. However, sometimes when one player is out it exposes another. It has been to some individuals belief that our CornerBack's are not as sharp as they should be. I will just say this that Ike Taylor is straight. If you are worried about William Gay then I will not comment but I just do not believe he has had enough experience in the game. It then becomes a Safety issue. It is either a problem with having someone back up Troy or the other Safety on the field. Ryan Clark, now first I do not think that Ryan Clark is a bad Safety. I just think he has hit the wall and he is as good as he is ever going to be. I do not feel we have to let him go but if he feels he is big time money, see ya. Here is where the thought comes in at the other safety position. Do you think Eric Berry would be a good fit? What do the Pittsburgh Steeler's need to do to get him? Let me know your thoughts on this because I am interested.
