Week 13 Prediction Game: The Results That Resulted Resultingly
Scene: Sunday afternoon, 4:30 PM. groug and howtheyscored are lounging around, groug in a tuxedo, howtheyscored in his Pokemon pajamas. They are not in a good mood because, come on, why do you think?
groug: Well that sucked.
howtheyscored: A lot.
groug: The Niners needed that one.
howtheyscored: Especially if the Vikings beat the Cardinals tonight, like you predicted. I said the Cards would win, but you're doing better in the prediction game, which means it's more likely that you'll be right. But are you sure that's what'll happen?
groug: Yes, I'm positive about that result. I'll go this far: if the Cardinals end up winning that one, I'll be forced to concede that I know nothing about football.
howtheyscored: Well, we can't all be GeoMak.
groug: What a world that would be...
(groug and howtheyscored sit in silence for a moment.)
howtheyscored: So, how many people do you think are going to blame this loss on Alex Smith?
groug: Alex Smith? But it's so clear it wasn't his fault. That won't happen.
howtheyscored: Oh, people will say it was his fault.
groug: But...not enough to notice, right? It'll be about the same number of people who are still bitter Bear Pascoe got released, right?
howtheyscored: It'll be a vocal minority, and they won't die quietly.
groug: No. No way. It'll be a couple of people who will be ridiculed and then ignored and then people will stop very quickly. Within the hour, even. I would bet anything on that. Anything.
howtheyscored: Even...this week's prediction game writeup?
groug: That's a steep price. What are you willing to put on the table?
howtheyscored: I...will stop making stupid jokes. FOR ONE WHOLE WEEK.
groug: Good God! Are you even capable of that?
howtheyscored: There's only one way to find out.
(groug nods)
groug: So we have a gentleman's wager.
(they shake hands)
FIVE MINUTES LATER, AFTER CHECKING NINERSNATION DOT COM, THE NUMBER ONE DESTINATION FOR ALL FORTY NINER NEEDS THAT DO NOT INVOLVE MINING FOR GOLD IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY...
groug: [Site decorum]!
howtheyscored: HAHAHAHAHAHA
groug: [Site decorum]!
howtheyscored: YOU SUCK
groug: [Site decorum]!
howtheyscored: LOSER
groug: I hate you.

Giants almost traded for Beltre in 2008
A year-and-a-half after GM Brian Sabean thought he had a deal to acquire Adrian Beltre from the Mariners, the Giants are again in a position to make Beltre their third baseman. . .In the summer of 2008, Sabean was biding time at third with Jose Castillo, a little Rich Aurilia and, eventually, some Pablo Sandoval. Down a bat (or three), he swung a trade with the Mariners, according to a baseball source, that was agreed on by Mariners baseball people but vetoed by president Chuck Armstrong.
Winn and Molina will probably be Type A Free Agents
As long as they keep up their production (air quotes may be added for Molina, if you are so inclined), we might get draft picks out of them after the year.
Aw, who am I kidding? Sabes will just sign Winn to an extension.
Farewell, Notgardo
- The Padres reached terms on minor-league deals with right-handed reliever Chris Britton, who had been non-tendered by the Yankees and has a career 3.83 ERA; and former Giants catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, who batted .266 with 12 homers for San Francisco in 2006.
Jon Heyman on the Cain for Fielder & Hardy rumors
• A Brewers official shot down the Internet rumor that had them possibly trading Prince Fielder and J.J. Hardy and a third player for Giants pitcher Matt Cain. Not that I really needed to hear that denial first-hand, as it wouldn't be an especially good move to trade either player straight-up for Cain. Hardy looked terrific in the playoffs, by the way.

Free ticket for 8/20
So, through the generosity of the Mayor of 311, I came into possession of two tickets for tomorrow's game. As I attended tonight's game for free (thanks Kitspool!), I figured I should give some McCoven member a chance to spend tomorrow with my charming and attractive self (it's true - ask Kitspool!*)
So, first person to ask for it gets a free ticket to tomorrow's game in seats which are presumably awesome (awesome enough for Baron and jponry, anyway). Supplies are limited Act today Goofus will not be dancing nearby etc etc.
*Kitspool, please lie.

Velez down, Denker up
They're saying it on the postgame wrap right now. It looks like Eugenio "One tool" Velez was sent down to Fresno and Denker was called up.
As much as I wanted Velez gone, I don't know if Denker should be called up this soon. I'd rather he got a full year in at Fresno before getting up to the majors and having the opportunity to sit on the bench for several games at a time.
Still: Goodbye Eugenio. Hello Travis.
Your thoughts, McCovey Chronicles readers? Other than "How much of this post was padding to get to 75 words?" (Hint: A Lot)
Speed And Defense!
No? Just speed?
Okay.
Jeff Pearlman Also Hates Will Clark
Coming up next: one time, Rey Sanchez didn't tip at a bar!
I don't like to throw around words like evil (Yes, this is a Dodgers post)
But the Dodgers are evil. Usually I just take this rivalry stuff as a joke, but that is absolutely incredible and ridiculous.
Assuming this is true, which looks pretty likely from that post, what the hell is wrong with these people and this organization? The team I root for might suck (Bengie Molina's 60-HR pace notwithstanding), but at least I don't support that.
Comments? Vomiting? Any idea what they could possibly be thinking? Comments about how I'm incredibly self-righteous and the Giants do that too and so it's not that bad (it will still be that bad)?
Managers
So, mostly because I'm not really in the mood right now to read the All Crede All The Time This Is KCBS thing that will inevitably last until spring training, I ask you, faithful McCovey Chronicles reader, what managers do you like? What managers do you not like? What do you notice about managers? What do you think a manager does that gets largely ignored? Here, in this diary, you can opine for Manny Acta or laugh at Jim Tracy. You can acknowledge Joe Torre's calm demeanor but still think that in New York he was a product of his players. You can say all my examples are stupid and I'm a stupid moron and I have a big butt and my butt smells and I like to kiss my own butt.
Just, for the love of God, give me something to think about besides Joe Crede at third base for the Giants.
Hennessey in as Fifth Starter
According to Giants Notes
Just to save you some time on the comments:
A. About time!
B. More like Jamey WRONG!
C. I wish it was Correia.
D. I'm just gald it wasn't Correia.
E. I wish it was Sanchez.
F. I'm just glad it wasn't Sanchez.
G. Oh man, that AJ Pierzynski is a real jerk.
Boof!
Ex-titular sensation Boof Bonser was optioned to Triple-A today.
How'd he get out of the Giants system, anyway? It's like one day he was there and the next he wasn't. I'm sure it wasn't a trade, because I would remember something like that.
