Support a Velodrome in Edmonton (Canada)!
There was some discussion of the lack of international standard velodromes in Canada and North America in the "Top Trumps 16: O Canada" thread last week - here's a chance to show support for the effort to replace Edmonton's aging concrete velodrome, complete with instructions on where in the survey to indicate your support.
Canadian TdF broadcast schedule on TSN2
Not sure how long this has been available but I couldn't find anything when I checked before - ever since TSN announced they'd got the rights to the Tour I've been wondering exactly what coverage they'd have and where. So, looks like it's live every day but on TSN2 not the main network, there aren't any repeats of coverage showing up at this point. (I'm guessing the schedule is fairly new to their website, as I'm pretty sure the last time I checked "Cycling" was not a separate category under "More+" as it is now, you had to look under "summer sports" or something like that). It remains to be seen what they're doing for coverage, ie. picking up Versus/"NBC Sportschannel" (or whatever the new name is again) directly as did OLN in the past, or whether they're actually going to add any Canadian content to it.
Interesting Development Plan (aka Team SpiderTech presentation)
As per Lyne's article (or the ones in the Canadian mainstream media like this Toronto Star blog ), Canadian ProConti team SpiderTech had their team presentation today at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, which made for some cool pics. And Steve Bauer has an interesting concept for finding more potential Canadian cycling prospects - try to recruit them from hockey (seeing as Canada has a large pool of hockey players, that would be ice hockey for those out there who need me to specify ;-) ). I suppose in a way it's not much different than recruiting former rowers (Rebecca Romero) or XC skiers (Tara Whitten) to become track cyclists... any thoughts on this strategy? I suppose anything to encourage more Canadian athletes to try cycling competitively is a good thing.
and on a side note re: cycling in Canada - it was announced earlier this week that TSN has obtained the rights to Canadian English TdF coverage for several years (after OLN announced they wouldn't be covering it in future, and many speculated it would move to TSN-rival Sportsnet which is owned by the same parent company as OLN). I'm curious to know what they plan to do with the rights, ie. any Canadian-specific coverage or simply just rebroadcasting Versus as before.
Upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi
Presuming that all the venues are completed on time, and that everyone isn't scared off by the current outbreak of dengue fever, the Commonwealth Games are soon to take place starting on October 3. Obviously the cycling events are missing a lot of competitors from non-Commonwealth countries, and Commonwealth riders on non-Commonwealth-based teams don't have a lot of support to participate (read: Brad McGee with FDJ in 2006, Richie Porte this year) - but there are still a number of good riders who are supposed to be participating.
TDU in trouble? - S Australia budget leak
The state of South Australia is having to make a lot of budget cuts apparently, and the recommendations were leaked to the media - if you look at pages 248 and 251 of this PDF document you will see that there are recommendations to either reduce the TDU back to pre-ProTour status, or to eliminate it entirely, all to save money (with the mention that if it wasn't ProTour it probably wouldn't survive).

TV coverage for Canadian PT races? UPDATED
I was wondering last night whether there would actually be any TV coverage (Canadian or other) of the Montreal and Quebec PT races, and found this from the official website (link above): "Don't miss the live coverage of both races in their entirety on Evasion"
- so, I suppose I'll be re-subscribing to Evasion on digital cable again for September at least (they had the Giro a few years ago so I watched them then, they have the Tour each year - French-Canadian OLN type channel). Has anyone heard or seen anything about other TV coverage for these events? (ie. Versus or Universal, Eurosport, other Euro broadcasters?)
and for completeness, here are links back to 2 prior recent posts on these races, Hons' invite to come to Montreal, and MathieuG's post discussing who will be riding.
(and re: who's riding, sounds like Evans will not be there because of his injury - according to the Velonation translation of a Gazetta interview, it was linked yesterday in a post about Madonna del Ghisallo)
update August 11: from Canadian Cyclist, apparently there will be English TV coverage from the new Sportsnet One in Canada, and "two special programs on Versus" (as well as 2 - 90 minute programs on Radio Canada = French CBC). Of course, seeing as Sportsnet One doesn't actually start broadcasting until this weekend (I think), who knows how much extra my cable company will want for it...
Last year for Canadian Tour coverage on current station
I was particularly concerned this year that Canadian OLN didn't seem to have anything on their website about the Tour until pretty much the last minute (ie. wondering whether they were going to be showing the Tour at all or whether I'd have to subscribe to the French-Canadian Canal Evasion at the last minute instead) - and they're only showing the live coverage, not the prime time repeat, which made me question their commitment to the Tour coverage. Now, apparently there is information that they will not be showing the Tour beyond this year - hopefully someone else will pick it up, I like the rumour in this linked article that it might be the Sportsnet channel owned by the same company (Rogers) as it would seem the Tour fits better on an actual sports channel, rather than an "Outdoor Life" channel where the definition of "outdoor life" seems to include ghosthunting, UFO's, and car repossessions judging by all the promos shown for other shows! I just really hope that it doesn't get missed out such that no English Canadian channel has it for next year.
Tour of Alberta? they're thinking about it!
a local newspaper columnist talks to Edmontonian and former yellow jersey Alex Stieda about the committee looking into the possibility of doing a pro race around our province of Alberta, due to report to the provincial tourism department later this year. The committee (and columnist) are currently at the Tour of California. The follow-up column the next day has more about it, and both articles are also promoting Armstrong's upcoming visit to Edmonton in August (co-sponsored by the paper).
3 years ago when I did a bike camp with Stieda he mentioned this sort of Tour as a possibility, but with the recession and the loss of other races due to lack of sponsorship I thought the idea was long-since-dead - guess I was wrong.
Alert for Canuck cycling fans - Track Worlds on CBC today!
Better late than never I suppose, particularly if you're like me who these days is finding it hard to watch live cycling via sometimes nebulous internet feeds (a 10 month old daughter has a lot to do with that - so much easier to PVR something just in case I can't watch it right that moment). I'm sure there will be a big focus on Tara Whitten and her 2 golds, and probably a ton of speculation about London 2012 "will she be the next Lori-Ann Muenzer?" (ie. do we have a gold medal chance in London?). Clara Hughes and Mark Connolly are commentating, obviously Clara knows about cycling and at least CBC seems to be consistent in that they keep letting Mark do any cycling stuff (eg. Olympics, last Commonwealth Games) so that hopefully he at least has some cycling knowledge. Anyway, it's a bit of a fix and likely the only cycling on TV here in Canada until the Tour - if only we could get Universal Sports and/or real Versus up here (our OLN only picks up the Versus feed for the Tour, not any other of the cycling stuff on Versus :-( ). I'll be following Pedal Mag's suggestion to send a comment to CBC afterwards thanking them and suggesting they show more cycling!
Will Walker resurfaces - not as a rider though :-(
Looks like Will Walker, who retired last year due to heart problems (at least according to the minimal information that any of us were able to find at that time), has reappeared as "sporting director in charge of race operations" for the Malaysian road cycling team. He had such a promising start to his career - 2nd in the 2005 U23 World championships RR, won the Aus national RR in 2006 (as a U23 then controversy over whether or not he'd get to wear the jersey because officially he was only the U23 champ not the elite champ even though he won the race over the elites). Then hit by Bell's palsy during his time at Rabobank, not re-signed, almost signed with Rock Racing for 2009 then did sign with Fuji-Servetto before apparently having to retire.
Another really good young Aussie? (Aus U23 national RR)
The Australian national U23 mens' road race title was won by 18-year old Michael Hepburn, in his first race as a non-junior. This is the rider who broke the junior pursuit world record (which was Taylor Phinney's at one point) a couple of times last year on his way to the world junior pursuit title. So, perhaps yet another talented young Aussie to watch in future.
an additional note - the report mentions that Ben King had a solo breakaway for 5 laps. When I was googling around to double-check his team (I thought it was Fly V Australia), I discovered that yes it was for 2009 but he's going to Trek-Livestrong for 2010. Thus he will be joining the American Ben King who already rides for Trek-Livestrong, and creating a situation even more confusing than the C(hristian) Meier/C(ameron) Meyer one at Garmin ;-).
Garmin-Transitions 2010 - where's Tom Zirbel?
So, Garmin announced their roster today and Tom Zirbel's name isn't on the list - I (and others on Facebook) thought they'd signed Zirbel back in September, looked it up and found this CN article for instance - so is it just a mistake or did something change between September and now? Anyone know?
Aussie sense of humour?

2009 Canadian Cyclocross Championships
(Oct 15 9:36 pm MDT - edited to correct the link to "last year")
My husband and I made it to nationals again this year on Saturday, but it was a lot different than last year- way colder (with snow), and with a 4-month-old baby in tow. A brief photo summary (more details here on my sometime-blog):
Chloe in her snowsuit with daddy
New course feature #1 - sandpit
New course feature #2 - flyover scaffolding-ramp (with eventual elite mens' repeat champ Geoff Kabush)
We took a number of photos of eventual winner Geoff Kabush
Womens' podium (1. Alison Sydor, 2. Pepper Harlton, 3. Natasha Elliott)
Elite Mens' podium (1. Geoff Kabush, 2. Derrick St. John, 3. Aaron Schooler)
And, for good measure, a much cuter photo of Chloe in her PdC onesie, now that it isn't actually miles too big! You can almost see that she does not favour either black socks or white socks, but instead pink socks with rattles on them, and believes that all cyclists should wear the same.
Canadian Worlds Team
From Canadian Cyclist:
Elite Men - Road Race
Michael Barry (ON)
Svein Tuft (BC)
Ryder Hesjedal (BC)
Elite Men - ITT
Svein Tuft (BC)
Christian Meier (BC)
"New Brunswicker is cycling the world" (local media interview with Christian Meier of Garmin)
... not to be confused with the Australian Cam Meyer also on Garmin ;-). Of course, there have to be the comparisons to hockey and the explanation of what a domestique does for the non-cycling readership - the writer makes it interesting. and a good quote:
"It is work without glory yet Meier finds romance in it. "For some reason as much as I admired the winners and champions I always had a deep respect for the domestiques. The guys who ride day in and day out and do the work and get bottles. They'll ride two or three of the Grand Tours a year. For me that held huge appeal. You always want to be a rider and a winner and a champion but I also enjoy being a domestique. I love riding at the front of a race.""

Cdn Cyclist Interview with Svein Tuft
good to hear that Tuft is finally getting back to normal, I'd thought his crash at De Panne didn't sound so horrible and wondered why he didn't seem to have raced since (and was pulled from Garmin's Giro team) but it sounds like he'd been having post-concussion effects from his ToC crash even until just recently.
Misc. Giro Roster news - McEwen out, Astana's last race?
Robbie just tweeted an hour or so ago that he will not be riding the Giro - more at his website.
And, there's apparently an article at a Kazahk site (google translation here) which claims that Astana's financial difficulties continue and that if they finish the Giro it might be the team's last race. (found via DPF). That adds some intrigue to the whole question of "who will Astana's leader be at the Tour?" - guess the question shifts to "will Contador and Armstrong be able to ride the Tour at all?".
SBS "Bike Shorts" with Matt Keenan - analysis of recent crashes
Keenan (sometime CTV commentator) comments on a number of recent crashes with some good analysis - including Armstrong, O'Grady, Schleck/Lloyd, McEwen, and the Bos/Impey incident (someone quoted Keenan in one of the Bos threads, not sure if they'd seen this video or whether it was transcribed somewhere) - also some pics (somewhat graphic) of Keenan directly after his own crash 3 weeks ago, glad to see he's recovering.
English Interview with Cadel Evans at sporza
click on "reactie Evans (Engels)" under audio for the interview, the accompanying article has just a brief summary but not really all of it.
Mike Barry's pre-Roubaix report ... good omen for George?
In reading this article by Barry over at Pedal, I thought it was interesting that the last time Barry rode Paris-Roubaix was the year of Hincapie's best finish (2nd in 2005) ... coincidence? ;-)
L'equipe article about one of Armstrong's doping tests...
I really hate to be the one to mention this, because it could all just be the supposed witch-hunt /out-to-get-Lance, but there's an article showing up at L'equipe for which I'd appreciate some better translation ... with the limited time I have on my lunch break i'm resorting to Google, it seems as though the controller for March 17 test reported Lance to the UCI and WADA because of his attitude during a doping control? and then L'Equipe goes on to speculate (without any information about what actually happened) that this could be an infringement of the World Anti-doping code? I thought April Fool's was last week ...
Gav here, with the translation:
Will the 24th antidoping control given by Lance Armstrong since his return to competition was on the 17th of March mark a turning point in the season of the American? According to the AFLD, the Astana rider had inappropriate behavior during the surprise control to the point that the supervising doctor prepared a report which was transmitted to the UCI and WADA on the 30th of March. The AFLD has nevetheless refused to detail the behavior under discussion.
During the anti-doping control at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the representative of the AFLD collected samples of urine, blood, and hair. "The UCI is not competent to judge this case. When there is an out-of-competition control carried out by a national agency, the agency is competent," declared the press chief of the UCI, Enrico Carpani. The AFLD awaits a response from the UCI, before examining whehter the attitude of the rider consitutes an infraction in the anti-doping code.
So, basically, in the view of the doctor who supervised the out of competition test, Armstrong acted inappropriately, though the AFLD has so far declined to detail what exactly happened. The AFLD has forwarded a report to WADA and the UCI both to inform them of what occured and also, as I understand it, to receive clarification. Did Armstrong's behavior - whatever it was - constitute a rules violation? This remains an open question, according to the report here.
Update. According to this report, Armstrong closed the door on the testers, and made them wait 30 minutes before providing the samples. According to WADA rules, the athlete must remain in sight of the representatives for the duration of the test. So, this 30 minute delay, if it indeed occured, is likely the "inappropriate behavior" in question.
Info on William Walker? anyone?
He had a bad year last year with injury/illness, and it sounds like this year isn't any better - the article from CN yesterday mentioning Fuji-Servetto signing Bailetti because of injuries/illness/retirement of Nardello listed that Walker is recovering from some sort of heart problems, supposedly diagnosed during the "recent" Tour Down Under. Now, to me, TDU isn't exactly "recent" anymore (over 2 months ago) - yet I hadn't heard anything about Walker having problems (in fact, Pez recently had an interview with Hilton Clarke which mentioned Walker without any hint of problems this year; SBS had an article about Australia being the top country on the ProTour and listing Walker, again not mentioning him having any health issues).
I went news googling, a Spanish Eurosport article from yesterday has "William Walker, who has switched sports to settle the heart problems that began in Tour Down Under the past and it has prevented full competition since then, so the Australian rider is removed from the roads for an indefinite time". A French Reuters article from today has that he "is obliged to put his career in parentheses. At 23, he suffers from heart defects and must undergo a series of reviews over several weeks." There are a couple of other articles that pick up the same basic info - Fuji signing Bailetti and Walker listed as among those Fuji riders currently out of commission.
Has anyone heard anything more about this? Hopefully it's something he can recover from and continue on with his cycling career ... (but it also makes me think of Hayden Roulston, for whom if his initial diagnosis was truly correct, reflexology or whatever he did probably didn't treat the root cause from a medical perspective, and I keep wondering if he's going to collapse while he's racing ...)
Tour of California experience - better late than never
So, I finally got around to posting some photos and comments about our (brief) Tour of California experience last month, on my not-very-active blog ... you'll find it here. As you can see above, publicity certainly centered entirely around Lance Armstrong. We didn't experience the clouds of yellow chalk dust others have commented on, but we did use ours for non-Livestrong purposes (ie. promotion of PdC ;-) ). For actual rider pics you'll have to check out the blog link.
this is just a neat pic, the Lotto-sponsored Junior team (Lotto - Predictor - VC Ardennes) takes places 1 through 5 in a recent race.
Tour de Kootenays cancelled
This UCI 1.2 ranked race scheduled for July 4-5 in BC has been cancelled. The local news article quotes the organizer as saying local highways officials were imposing onerous requirements that are actually against UCI regulations, and the organizer suggests they were doing so purposefully to block the event because they felt it would create too much traffic (it's not like it would be taking place in one of the more populated areas of BC). Kind of sad, in several ways - not only does it reflect the predominance of "car-culture" over everything else, but it also means a lost opportunity for Canadians to get more UCI points in an effort to qualify for more Olympics/Worlds spots (Canadians always tend to complain at Olympic time about "why aren't we doing better?" or "why don't we have more athletes in this event?", yet then events that could help promote development and progression to higher-level competition get blocked).
Cadel Evans's new website (and Aussie cyclists twittering)
for those Evans fans, like me, who may have noticed that his old website first disappeared with error messages then showed an "under construction" header then reverted back to an error message, there is in fact a new (and IMO much-improved) website as linked above. Much-improved in that it isn't flash-based anymore (so if I want to quote something, I don't have to retype it all - I can just cut and paste), and the wordpress blog format means I can get an RSS feed for Google Reader (rather than have to check the site every few days to see if anything is new).
And then, the latest entry today points out that Cadel has also started tweeting and has a MySpace page as well. There's a funny tweet on his wife's Twitter: "I think I created a monster when I introduced Cadel to Twitter and Myspace" ...
Good summary article about "Les Québécois" cyclists
yeah, it's in French, the Québéc/francophone media in Canada pay a lot more attention to cycling than the anglophone media do, google translation/garbling here. The article has quotes from Dominique Rollin, Charles Dionne, Martin Gilbert, François Parisien, Keven Lacombe (who won the first stage of the Tour of Cuba the other day), and David Veilleux.
NYT article on Svein Tuft
Just published online (thanks to the tip on Twitter from JV/Team Slipstream) - all the stuff most of us have heard before about his unorthodox route to the ProTour but now for a wider audience ... they also talked to his mother, interesting quote:
"But I want everybody to know that, no, Svein was not an orphan. He was raised by two loving parents. He had his own room, a trampoline, a motor scooter. But he was just looking for something else.”
Tuft has a lot to live up to this year, with the comments JV's been making about him on Twitter lately, "a guy I really think is going to be something big in 2009" today and "I am completely impressed by the attitude, drive, focus, and professionalism of Svein Tuft" from late January...
