Dawg Sports Down Under - Installment One: An Introduction to Aussie Rules Football
G'day, Dawg Sports Faithful, and I hope all of you are doing well and enjoying your summer in the northern hemisphere. If you're wondering where I've been (and you're likely not, but you're going to find out anyway), on May 6th, I moved to Melbourne, Australia, for work (well, actually, I didn't get to Melbourne until the 13th because I had to go to Tokyo first, but that's neither here nor there). Australia, you say? That sounds splendid! Well, yes, it does...but just keep in mind that it's winter down here, so while the lot of you are coming off of a warm, sunny, three day weekend and holiday that practically serves as the opening ceremony for summer, I'm enjoying highs of 55 with lots of rain. No, I'm not bitter, why do you ask? In any event, I am now, and will be for the foreseeable future, a resident of the lovely island known by its natives as Oz. As such, my postings in relation to the Georgia Bulldogs will likely be few and far between; rather, I'll be doing a series of posts detailing my experiences below the equator, the first of which is discussing Aussie Rules Football. Now, make like a kangaroo and hop on down to the other side of the jump...
Tuesday Morning Dawg Bites - 'Broken National Championship Trophy National Championship, PAWWWLLLLLL' Edition
Good morning, Dawg people. On this fine Tuesday morning, I hope all of you have settled into your respective work weeks, keen on the idea that, while it's not yet Wednesday, today is not Monday...so everything must be Tuesday. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you, but the Chairmen of the Board seemed to be thrilled with the idea, and it worked out pretty well for them. Oh, you don't know that song? Well then, here you are...let's follow up with some bits to nosh on after the jump...
Tuesday Morning Dawg Bites - "Wear A Sweater Day" Edition
A fine "Guten Morgen" to everyone in DawgNation this morning on a day that should be, but isn't, celebrated by the majority of red-blooded Americans. You see, today marks a significant day in the history of American Pop Culture and how it influenced millions of American youth over the past half century, in that today marks the 84th anniversary of the birth of one Fred McFeely Rogers. The TV Show "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" was a staple in my household growing up, so much so that my brother, downindixie, was once heard responding to a question posed by Mr. Rogers with "Mr. Rogers, you never listen to me." In any event, let's go ahead and jump on down to the links for the day.
Georgia Swimmers & Divers Conclude Bulldog Last Chance Meet
The Georgia Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving teams finished out their home schedule at Gabrielsen Natatorium this weekend with the conclusion of the Bulldog Last Chance Meet. The purpose of this meet is to do, quite simply, what its name suggests, which is to give swimmers and divers one last shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championships in a couple of weeks. All in all, a number of swimmers improved their qualifying times, though the final results of who qualified won't be out until later in the week.
Monday Morning Dawg Bites - "Start Me Up" Edition
We're Allowed In The Deep End - Georgia Swimmers & Divers Take SEC Medals
For those of you who don't know, the Georgia Bulldogs swimming and diving team has been competing in the SEC tournament for the past four days. The University of Georgia has quite a tradition with S&D, and head coach Jack Bauerle has served as the swim coach for the U.S. team in the Olympics. The Georgia Women's Swimming & Diving team won the SEC tournament for the third straight year, scoring a total of 781 points over the four day meet. The Men's S&D team finished third in the tournament, which is promising, given the young talent on the current roster.
Wendy Trott, Michelle McKeehan, Nic Fink, and Martin Grodzki all placed first in their respective events, in addition to Nic Fink and Amber McDermott being named SEC Freshmen of the Year.
Seriously, folks, this is quite an accomplishment for the members of the University of Georgia Swimming & Diving Team, and the fact that we are able to witness a coach as successful as Jack Bauerle is a privilege. We may bemoan the fact that our football team hasn't won a national championship since 1980, but on the other hand, we've been able to witness incredible coaches like Bauerle, Yoculan, and Diaz in non-revenue sports with continued success. We should count our blessings, and...
Go Dawgs!
Jack in the Box introduces Bacon Milkshake
Nationwide fast food chain, Jack in the Box, is introducing a new "secret" item to its menu for a limited time...the Bacon Milkshake. At just 773 calories in the 16 oz. version or 1081 calories in the 24 oz. version, it's the perfect drink to keep you fit during the offseason.
For the record, the nearest Jack in the Box is in Anderson, South Carolina. Do we still have that baseball home-and-home with Clemson?
Monday Morning Dawg Bites - Toking with Lawrence Welk? Edition
Good morning, everyone. Here we are, once again, with another wonderful work week ahead of us. The Super Bowl now in the books, we're on a football hiatus until September, so we can go ahead and start the countdown now (and given that I know how some of you feel about the NFL, I'm sure a number of you have already started the countdown). This morning, before getting into our normal linkfest, I'd like to bring a video to the attention of everyone here. All I'll say is that this video is either the greatest display of "ignorance is bliss" that you'll ever find, or that Lawrence Welk's target audience was severely misjudged. You decide...(more links after the jump)
Monday Morning Dawg Bites - Happy Birthday Doutzen Kroes Edition
Good morning, folks. It's once again the Monday morning of a standard five-day work week, and I think the weather cooperated very nicely with the standard Monday morning mantra of suck. I was going to start the week off by offering a fare-thee-well to Etta James, whose death was somewhat overshadowed this weekend with the passing of Joe Paterno, but instead, I'm going to celebrate life...particularly, the life of Dutzen Kroes, Dutch supermodel who turns 27 today. So, without further ado, Happy Birthday, Doutzen! You're pretty. More links after the jump...
Monday Morning Dawg Bites - Jordan Jenkins/Rematch! Edition
Well folks, we've finally made to the day everyone's been waiting for...the day where the BCS decides if an undefeated LSU team who beat Alabama in their own house during the regular season is truly the best team in the country, or will they suffer the same fate as that of the New England Patriots in 2007? For my money, I still think LSU takes the title, but I wouldn't say I'd be extremely surprised if it somehow ended up the other way around...it's hard to beat the same team twice and all that.
In any event, let's jump on down to the links, shall we?
UGA makes quite an impression on Stephenson RB Mike Davis
Mike Davis made an unofficial (h/t Mr. Sanchez) visit to Athens today and liked it so much that he wants seconds...we'll get his last official visit before signing day. Seriously, this is great news and makes it look more and more likely that we'll achieve our goal of landing two top flight running backs in this class...and Mike's quote about 'Tree is just icing on the cake.
Monday Morning Dawg Bites - "Which Way Did He Go, George?" Edition
Good Morning, Dawg People. This Monday morning, you may find yourself with little motivation. Sure, last Monday after the SEC Championship game was slow, but there were still college football games to be played (Army-Navy) and trophies to be awarded (Thank you, RGIII, for sparing me from having to hear about three consecutive Heisman trophy winners from the state of Alabama. You've outdone yourself.). This Monday, though, we're finished. As quickly as college football season came upon us in September, he's left us in mid-December to wander alone in the frozen tundra that is the time between conference championship games and bowl games. College football is flaky like that, but we can thank our lucky stars that our team was relevant throughout the season and enjoyed the experience of playing in a championship game, unlike some others we could name (see how I included the Aggies in that? Take that, you rumor mongering ninnies). It's times like these, when I find myself wondering where football season went and what I'll do to replace it, where I'm reminded of the line from the "Of Fox and Hounds" Looney Tunes bit. You know, this line:
Any way, on to the links after the jump...
The honors keep rolling on in...
Isaiah Crowell is voted SEC Fresh of the Year by the AP, Jarvis Jones is unanimously named to All-SEC First Team, and Drew Butler gets an honorable mention.
The nicest thing about this is that only one of these guys is a senior...the other two will both be back next year.
Say what you will about Crowell's attitude, but there's no doubt that the kid is talented, and this is a big award to win for him. Let's hope Keith Marshall comes in and challenges him to go out and do more next year.
Update: h/t honors go to Bard Parker, who beat me to the punch on this by about three minutes. Great minds think alike!
Monday Morning Dawg Bites - Dome Sweet Dome Edition
Well, folks, we've finally made it. Just thirteen short weeks ago, we were preparing to start our season against a highly ranked opponent in the Georgia Dome, and, thankfully, we've come full circle. I'm certainly not going in predicting a win for the Dawgs, but Mark Richt does have a .500 record in the Dome, this team has grown tremendously, and we definitely have a chance at an upset on Saturday...let's just hope we're a little better prepared to handle crowd noise this time (because if this team thought a bunch of folks from Idaho were loud, they're going to be deafened by 30,000+ drunken cajuns). Anywho, let's jump on down to the links, shall we?
Georgia vs. Kentucky Second Half "Exorcise the Demons" Open Comment Thread
Let's get this thing turned around, STAT. Break out your rabbit's foot, Bible, Koran, lucky underpants, Maker's Mark, finest green, whatever...just get some luck going for the good guys.
I really can't put a finger on it. I messed up too much and this was a big team loss. They got too many yards, and we didn't get any. It was bad.
Clint Moseley on the game against Georgia
When Grantham took the job at Georgia, he stated that he looked forward to developing "an aggressive, physical, attacking style defense that offenses will not look forward to playing against." Based on how Clint Moseley sounded after the game, I think we can safely say that we're on our way to accomplishing that mission.

Monday Morning Dawg Bites - "Get Outta Here Kitty Kat!" Edition
Good Morning, Dawg Nation, and isn't it a fine morning? Everyone got to snooze for what feels like an hour later, Georgia finds itself atop the SEC East standings and in control of its own destiny, and we're kicking off Hate Week, Volume II. To start this off right, let's get to a few links to nosh on for a while. First, let's take a little trip down memory lane to November 11th, 2008, when loyal and longtime commenter, SG Standard, enjoyed his finest hour here at DawgSports, with a little piece called "I Really Hate Auburn". While some things may have changed, that piece is still valid for time immemorial, and if you've never read it, you're doing yourself an injustice (unless you're an Auburn person, in which case, you probably shouldn't read it unless you just like being angry on Monday mornings).

Monday Morning Dawg Bites - Hatin' Ain't Easy Edition
We're starting a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning links post here at DawgSports that will entail some Dawg news, some College Football news, and whatever other news might happen to be included because it's interesting as well. Oh, and I think someone told me once that it's great to be a Gator Hater...not sure what relevance that has to this week's game, but I'm including it here too. Dig in.
- The Good Senator Blutarsky asks sort of a Chicken and Egg conundrum here. Does Coach Bobo need to coach up his players more, or could our sophomore quarterback have a few more growing pains than we thought?
- Seth Emerson has some notes on Richt's teleconference from last night.
- Will Muschamp seems to think the Gators aren't that far away from the SEC's elite. Here's to hoping the Dawgs can offer a nice retort to that sentiment.
- Edward Aschoff of ESPN offers his SEC Bowl Projections. Would anyone here have been unhappy with an Outback Bowl appearance before the season?
- Georgia has moved out of the "Others Receiving Votes" category, and is now a Top 25 team, according to the BCS and others. I like it, but I'm an eternal optimist. If you think it's a death knell...well, what HASN'T been a death knell heading to Jax in the last 20 years?
- Finally, the weather forecast for Jacksonville on Saturday. Sunny and in the 70s? Sounds like a perfect day to feast on some alligator tail.
You can always find more Bulldogs vs Gators coverage from the SBNation game page. Oh, and have you hated your Gator today?
Spur of the Moment Monday Night Football Miami/Maryland Open Comment Thread
Feel free to chime in for anyone who's bored and watching Monday Night Football. If nothing else, it's another opportunity to watch REAL football, and since I was at the game and couldn't watch much during the day Saturday, I'll take it. Also, those Maryland uniforms are absolutely atrocious. What, exactly, were they going for? Nike may have thoroughly missed the boat with the Pro Combat Unis, but Under Armour didn't even make it to the port.
Four Auburn Football Players Arrested
Home Invasion involving a weapon. Not good for the Tigers.
The Case For The Dawgs To Go Dancin' (Or Why An Elephant Shouldn't Be Allowed In The Room)
A few days ago, all we heard here in Bulldog Nation was "Take care of business at home, avoid bad losses and you'll be in the tournament". Following the win against LSU, many media folks had the Dawgs penciled into brackets anywhere from the nine to the twelve seed. Most people expected Alabama to hold serve against Georgia at home (where they're undefeated this year), and they did. Why, then, did many of the talking heads suddenly switch to this whole idea that Georgia vs. Alabama in the SEC Tournament is a play in game for the NCAA Tournament? Aside from final record (which is a wash) and SEC record (which goes to Alabama), is Georgia's hand really equal with Alabama's? What other bits of information can we use to compare the two teams? Well, I'm glad you asked. Let's take a look at those "other bits" a little more closely, shall we?
Georgia hires Olivadotti as Inside Linebackers Coach
Olivadotti comes from the Washington Redskins, spending eleven seasons there. That should be a statement to his abilities in itself, since Dan Snyder fires people as whimsically and with as much thought as Donald Trump and Al Davis combined.
Just last year, Olivadotti coached a veteran linebacker (London Fletcher) and a rookie linebacker (Brian Orakpo) to their first Pro Bowls in their careers, which, in my opinion, cements the statement that he's a good teacher who can handle different techniques/experience levels. It will be nice to see what he can do with Samuel and Jones in their first years.
Every Conversation With An Auburn Fan Since January 10th
A pretty accurate representation of any conversation with an Auburn fan since they won the National Title...and before that.
My favorite part:
Random Fan: "You really believe that God takes a vested interested in a football game?"
Auburn Fan: "Of course I do, Trooper Taylor and Gene Chizik said so."
Random Fan: "You mean that idiot with the towel? The one who gets excited when the Auburn players hit dirty?"
Classic.
Where The Yardlines End - An Ode to the Endzone inspired by Shel Silverstein
There is a place where the yardlines end
And before the boundaries begin
And there the grass is painted red and white
And there those Hairy Dawgs dance with delight
And there Big Bad Bruce rests from his fight
To cool on his ice chilled rear-end.
Let us leave this place where Gators hold us back
And the Zebras attempt with their flags a hand to lend.
Past midfield we will lay the enemy low
We shall run with a run that is determined and know
That we go where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the yardlines end.
Yes we'll run with a run that is determined and know
That we go where the chalk-white arrows go
For the pylons, they mark, and the Bulldawgs, they know
The place where the yardlines end.
Frenchy's not happy...what else is new?
Does Jeff really expect to play every day on any club with those kinds of numbers? I am glad the Braves traded him and I wanted to see him do well in his career, but this just seems like more of the same type of childish behavior. If your numbers warrant you playing every day, then you'll generally play every day. Otherwise, you'll be sent down to AAA to try to fix your swing, or you'll be put in a platoon role or benched for someone with more promise. To be as charismatic a guy as Francoeur is, you would think he would've learned somewhere along the way how to handle adversity. On the other hand, though, I guess when you've always been the best your entire life and have never had to worry about being benched, the first few times you encounter it, you act like a child. Grow up, Jeff.
Akeem Dent out four to six weeks
So apparently Akeem Dent hurt his toe last week and is having to have surgery on it, which will put him out 4-6 weeks. Given the timetable on recovery, this may or may not cause him to miss games (probably only the opener, if any), but it still hurts to have our starting Mike linebacker missing a month or more of practice with a new defense.
Three-Man Rotation
Alright, this one's pretty simple. If the playoffs started today, who would you want taking the mound in a three-man rotation for the Braves? I feel like Hudson is pretty much a no-brainer, so in the poll, I'll only give two other options instead of all three (and for ease purposes). If you disagree with Hudson, you will be ostracized for poor choice, but feel free to state it in the comments, nonetheless.
Jordan Love Arrested
According to Tim Tucker, Love was arrested last night for obstruction of a police officer. Not sure the details surrounding it, but this is going to be interesting if that's the only charge.
Jerry Jones on Tebow
A friend told me about this video, and while it doesn't relate to UGA, it is humorous and it does feed into the "Urban Meyer doesn't prepare his players for the NFL" meme. Anyway, it's pretty funny to see Jerry Jones talk about Bill Parcells, Tim Tebow, and his stadium while he's drunk (though granted, he always looks drunk). Oh, and I'm sorry that it's deadspin...but hey, it is what it is. Also, the language includes some profanity, so be careful.

A big day for Dawgsports
Today, February 23rd, marks the anniversary of an historic day in the annals of Dawgsports. The de facto first lady of Dawgsports (other than Kyle's wife and podunkdawg, of course) was born 45 years ago today. Who might this first lady be? Kristin Davis, whose picture is posted here anytime Rutgers is mentioned, as well as any other time Kyle feels like the blog needs a little added beauty. Kyle, you're slipping...I expected to see something about this hours ago! So, without further ado...
