THE DIAMONDBACKS GET THE DAVE CAMERON TREATMENT
Let us hope this turns out as well as the last bold FG proclamation about the NL West race.
The Giants FO: Reaping what they've sowed
Cain. Bumgarner. Lincecum. Ranked 5th, 7th and 8th respectively in NL FIP.
Lincecum. Cain. Bumgarner. Ranked lowest, 3rd lowest, and 4th lowest respectively in NL Run Support.
This troubles me to no end, but it doesn't surprise me. It is the unprecendented culmination of years upon years of a front office focusing on understanding and developing one part of the game, to the nearly complete detriment of the other. The Giants make a compelling case for having the best starting pitching in the National League (yes, I know about the Phillies). The stats don't lie. And they make a clear-cut case for having the worst run support in the league. Again, the stats don't lie. The lack of hitting development and a clear, well-researched philosophy to that effect had to result in something, right?
While we watch the season unravel, it's worth noting that this level of contrast is historic, and if you can be objective, pretty awesome to behold. On the one hand, the fact that the Giants organization was rewarded with a World Series victory last year speaks to them doing something right (developing awesome pitching), but it distracted people from the colossal failure in building offenses, with its blip-like, yes, fluke of a decent year in runs scored. The Giants researched and developed Cain, Lincecum and Bumgarner. They cannot claim the same for the unexpected brilliance they received from Huff, Torres, and Ross in 2010. And now, we get to see just how stunning a failure their single-mindedness was, while somehow simultaneously being able to revel in the success that it brought about last year. Confused fans are we. Even from half inning to half inning, it's been brilliance, followed by 1-2-3 out crap. We are the Philstros, or perhaps more appropriate, the Asslies.
I suppose I can't totally blame them for thinking "the strategy is working." It's a colossal misunderstanding that seems to suggest they don't put enough focus on luck and small sample sizes, but they DID win it all. And they doubled down, both in terms of who was on the roster, and who got played. Give up one of a few potentially talented hitters in the system for a shortstop that can't offer ANYTHING to the team, because he's "been there". Refuse to let go of the worst offenders (I'm looking at you, Rowand) for similar reasons. There was never any creativity this season. Bochy says he tried everything, including "yelling". No, Bochy, you didn't try many things, like consistently putting Belt in a lineup spot accentuating his OBP potential, or keeping Nate in right, as was done with Randy Winn, to great effect. Nah, put the veteran Beltran in right where he's comfortable, despite a lack of range and a hilariously ironic lack of "fire in the belly". Bat the veteran Cabrera where he asks to be batted, AT THE FUCKING TOP OF THE LINEUP, to the detriment of the team.
And now, the offense is what it is. What an amazing way to undo years of unqualified success at such a critical aspect of the game as pitching development. That success will undoubtedly suffer as a result- you could see that the moment Lincecum broke down against the Cubs the other day. You can see it in the way that Vogelsong's magic year is being forgotten in favor of fan hatred of Bochy and Sabean, and boos at the ballpark. The Giants FO made pitching great, and now it is spitting on that pitching by staying committed to the most backward hitting "strategy" I've ever seen.
I'm assuming that those of you who have suggested Bochy/Sabean job security under the cover of "injury" are correct. With that in mind, two things need to happen between now and next season, if the team is to improve: the Giants need to shift strategy away from acquiring old downside-of-career starting position players (JUST DON'T DO IT, EVER), getting rid of some in the process. And they need to hope, and pray, for all our sakes that the pitchers have a short memory.

Clarity
"The "free fall" didn't start 30 days ago, it started when Sanchez got hurt, (not Posey) and compounded when they sent down Crawford for Cabrera, shoved Schierholtz in left field for Beltran and kept playing Huff instead of benching him and playing Belt at first base and made no attempt to get a reliable catcher who could swing a bat and actually hit the ball."
The link takes you to an article where Sabean defends his actions and inaction, but the quote is from a comment. I think it nails it, as far as the specific things that went wrong. For the folks who want to go on about bad luck and injuries, including Sabes and Bochy, who keep saying things like, "We've tried everything", what do you say to these specific problems, indicated above?
Lincecum, Cain, Vogelsong, Wilson all-stars
Sandoval, Lopez and Romo were near misses. Baggs with the scoop of course.
Awesome Piece on Hector Sanchez
A Sally League scout talks about his man-crush on Hector, whom he sees as the Giants catcher of the future, possibly starting later this season.
...manager Bruce Bochy said he was specifically looking to his veterans to step up, notably third baseman Miguel Tejada, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI on Monday.
"We need to get him going. He's one of the veterans we're going to be leaning on," Bochy said.

2 WAR. Already.
Tim Lincecum is already at 2 WAR, with a little more than 1/5 of the season in the bag. Barry Zito's full healthy season upside, secured already by our ace.

Ridiculous
I'm engaged in, shall we say, a "petti" argument about Pablo, over at Beyond the Boxscore.
I could use some stat people to help with this.
OT: Job Opening at my company
Since this is a specialized position, I'm trying to cast as wide a net as possible. Plus, I need more Giants fans around the office.
Fan Belt Fix
Marc Hulet: "He’s definitely my early favorite for RoY in the NL, over the likes of Cincinnati’s Aroldis Chapman, Atlanta’s talented trio of prospects Freddie Freeman, Brandon Beachy, and Mike Minor, as well as Philly’s Domonic Brown (currently out with an injury)."
Dave Righetti, 3 WAR in 2010, 54 total for career
Great FanGraphs article examines the "Righetti Effect".
Nice writeup over at Beyond the Box Score
"Add that to the fact that elite run preventing teams had the same probability of making the playoffs during the decade as run scoring teams (63%) and run preventing teams had a higher probability of winning the World Series (7% to 4%), and the Giants don't look quite so lucky--they just look good."
AZGiants is back! Yeay Joseph Pun!
The awesome pictures begin now.
Garza vs. Cain
Part 1 is at the link. Part 2 is here: http://www.splashingpumpkins.com/2011/01/garza-vs-cain-part-two-not-so-great.html
Phil Humber is an Athletic
The A's claimed Philip Humber off of waivers from the Royals, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star (on Twitter). The Royals had designated Humber for assignment earlier in the week.
Humber, 28 next week, posted a 4.15 ERA in 21 2/3 big league innings this year.
1. Buster Posey, SFG-If he can hit .300, hit 20+ HRs and drive in 85, he will be the #1 fantasy catcher in 2011. I know this is an aggressive rating, but the young catcher hit .305-.357-.505 with 18 HRs and 67 RBIs in 406 ABs in 2010. Bill James projects him to go 21-83-.308 in 2011. Does Mauer even sniff 20 bombs?
A Modest Proposal
Grant's surprises post really got me thinking about moments in the season, and how I would love to be able to relive them. But a DVD of the season or its greatest moments wouldn't be the best way to do that. Not when we have the genius of the McCoven within reach.
Natto, TheLetter: would you be at all interested in doing a manga of the season? I would happily prepay for it via paypal, as would plenty of other McCoven, I'm sure. I'd pony up $50. Maybe 100 others would too (???). Is this even remotely conceivable?
We could have inserts at chapter breaks or something, where we have the voted-on favorite McCoven images.
I dunno. Maybe it's crazy, but I had to post it.
I just really love this picture, from SI.com

Halloween Costume Role/Roll Call
And of course, since I'm not really a mensch, here's my wife, a Pig in a Blanket:
Speaking of things porcine, if anyone wants to talk about strange party food (seems to accompany this time of year), I can contribute the lovely notion of rice krispy treats with bits of bacon, and bacon fat. Yum.
The World Series, Dave Eggers Style
Hat tip to El Lefty Malo for mentioning this at his excellent blog. I hadn't seen it posted here yet. Pretty cool!
On Buddhism and Baseball
A really good read about the importance we place on the game. It's not judgmental, and it offers a lot of perspective, at least to this fan who is hanging on every moment of the soon-to-begin World Series.
Now, back to counting the minutes...
Willie and Buster
Dude compares the rookie years of Buster and Mays. Pretty surprising, actually.
During Tim Lincecum’s start in Game 1 Saturday at Philly, I noticed that he shook off Posey a few times. I asked Lincecum about that later.
"Oh, no, he wanted me to do that," Lincecum said. "It was intentional."
Missed radio/TV. Looking for a copy to watch. iTunes? Apparently no. mlb.com? Not sure how to purchase it from them by itself.
Just want to see that damn last game!!!
Thank you for any help.
Edwin Escobar, LHP, Salem-Keizer: This Giants prospect is an 18-year-old Venezuelan, originally signed by the Rangers and traded to San Francisco for Ben Snyder this past April. He posted a 4.86 ERA in the Northwest League, with a 69/40 K/BB in 63 innings, with 64 hits allowed. He doesn't stand out on paper, but his K/IP ratio is strong, he's young, he throws 90-92 MPH with more velocity possible, his breaking stuff has a chance to be good, and the Giants know something about young pitching. He needs to improve his control, but keep an eye on him.
What do you get if your bats are silent and you walk 7 in 5 innings at Petco?"
"Brian Wilson for a 5 out save. Forty two."
"That's it. That's all there is."
A Whole Lot of Stupidity About Belt
In an article entitled "Giants may not have room to promote Belt", the following pieces of poop are laid out:
• Bochy and Sabean don't want to remove anyone from the 40-man, and actually really want to make room for (wait for it) Dontrelle Willis.
• This:
Belt or any other hitting prospect would not play much with the Giants in a pennant race, Bochy said Friday."That's fair to assume because of our situation," he said. "We have a lot of outfielders and infielders. Edgar (Renteria) is real close to being ready by the first (of September). But you never rule anything out."
So Belt is being blocked by Renteria and Willis? WTF?
• Bochy is a big fat idiot:
Bochy said Belt could benefit from being a Giant in September the way Posey did last year, even though the catcher had only 17 at-bats.
"It was valuable, especially for him seeing what the game is about," Bochy said. "He got a little playing time, not much. When he came up this time, he had a sense of belonging, knowing what the game is about. I think that little cup of coffee helped him."
