One Bronco Nation Under God Hatemay's Game Thoughts- ASU Edition

The season has come to a close. Boise State finished strong in sin city with a victory over the Jekyll and Hyde Arizona State Sun Devils. Boise State opened strong with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Doug Martin that put ASU in a quick 7 point hole. Any momentum that Arizona State felt for their coaches last game had disintegrated within the first 15 seconds of the start of the game.

Boise State was a first half juggernaut as they pounded the ball down ASU's throat all night long. The play book was wide open as the offense did what it wanted. However, it appeared that stand out WR Tyler Shoemaker spent more time at the Burlesque show and dollar blackjack table than he did at the film room this week. It was an unfortunate finish to Dennis Erickson's career, but lets be honest, he is not the coach he once was, and his style doesn't take his teams as far as they once did. ASU played the role of Mr. Hyde for most of the night with flashes of Dr. Jekyll in the early part of the 2nd half when BSU made some self inflicted errors.

Our film from the TCU game did not make it onto the desk of Coach Erickson as he tried to run the ball into the teeth of the BSU defense. Even Kirk Herbstreit said that running the ball against us was not a good idea. ASU ran one double move and Osweiler was sacked, so you don't try one again???? Pants Action ran about 12 double moves against us with Pachall and we stopped one or two of them, but he threw them all night long, ASU didn't. Had they bagged their running game, stayed wth the RB swing out of the backfield and kept those 12 yard routes over the middle the results may have been different.

Unfortunately, ASU could not shake off the chains of penalties, un-forced errors, and lack of discipline that have plagued them all year. The game should have been much closer, but a team cannot make that mny mistakes and expect to win. Quarterbacks- Kellen Moore was victimized by drops from his veteran receivers. He put the ball on the money and avoided the pressure. He was not the sharpest stats wise but he was solid as he ever was. I will miss Kellen Moore very much. He represented Benton County and Eastern Washington so well. Our Eastern Washington community is extremly proud of He and his brothers efforts and accomplishments. I honestly hope he gets picked up by and NFL team, given a couple hundred thousand dollars for a year or two to hold a clipboard, then comes back to Boise to be on the staff. Great career.

Runningbacks- Doug Martin played as well as he ever has. He did not go down on first contact, made defenders miss, and made defenders pay for trying to bring him down All of Doug Martin's career and style came out against ASU. Tough, fast, physical, and detemined were the words to describe every carry he had. What a blessing it has been to watch him run the ball for the last 3 years. I hope Martin gets drafted and is allowed to showcase his talents for an NFL team.

Wide Receivers- Much respect for Tyler Shoemaker's accomplishments. Local prodict who was a walk on and earned a scholarship didn't play his best but did finish with a touchdown reception. Matt Miller and Kirby Moore continued to be solid, and Geraldo Boldewijn gave some good yardage after the catch. The corps for next year should be stellar.

Offensive Line- Great finish to an injury hampered year. Many bodies were flying around and making things happen. No sacks, and a over 150 yards of rushing equals a great night for our big men in the trenches.

Defensive Line- Won the battle and inflicted their will on ASU's offensive line. The running game was non-existant. I am not sure why ASU was so committed to the run, because TCU beat us by passing the ball and not running it. Billy Wynn, Chase Baker, Shea McClellin, Tyrone Crawford and the rest of the crew made the difference. They pressured Osweiler despite only rushing three and four lineman.

Line Backers- Byron Hout and Aaron Tevis got their hands up into the passing lanes often to knock down alot of passes and disrupt the routes. They also did a great job of filling the gaps when ASU tried to run the ball.

Secondary- What a difference Jamar Taylor makes. He made a big difference in locking down his side of the field. Coach K did a good job of mixing up some looks and rotating the bodies in the secondary. Iloka played a tad bit of corner, but mainly safety, and Stanaway got time at safety as well. Shea McLellin took time at LB, Nickel, and lineman. It was great to see Travis Stanaway get a touchdown. He has been a solid contributor on special teams his whole career, and has played behind some great safeties. Stanaway made the most of his time wheater it was filling in for Ioane in the game against Georgia, or when Iloak made the move to corner, Stanaway has stepped up. Great career young man.

Special Teams- Our kick off coverage got blocked well by ASU. Our punt team covered well when they had to, and we made all our extra points. All in all, our defense played well, we had a lapse of concentration in the 2nd half, our offense played well, our running back carried defenders all night long, and we saw a great finish to one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play college football.

Bowling season is upon is. Bsu gets rewarded for their #7 ranking in the BCS with a meager trip to the Vegas bowl. Oh well. Thank you Big East for rescuing us from Hair Thompson's MTN USA alliance, crappy television coverage, no night games at Bronco Stadium, dumb uniform rules, and a whole bunch of Hair. One Bronco Nation Under God Hatemay's Gamethoughs- UGA edition

Before I begin, I give a big thanks to the UGA fans I chatted with before and after the game.  Great people, great hospitality.  Many of them thanked us for coming to their state to support our team, many of them came up after the game and told us we had the better team, etc.  It takes a lot of class to do that.  I did not receive that kind of hospitality from the Va- Tech fans…..

Offensive line- After watching the game on TiVo and in person, it was evident who was in shape and who wasn’t.  Our line was out sized all the way across.  We had a few different people in the o-line mix and they all came to play.  No holding penalties, no sacks, and over 100 yards rushing.  Nate Potter, Joe Kellog, Spencer Gerke, Thomas Bird, Matt Paradis, Jake Broyels, Charles Leno and Brenel Meyers all came to play.  Our big boys deserve all the credit.  They faced much bigger men then they have faced, granted it was a 3-4, but UGA was bringing lots of pressure late and our O-line handled it well.  I was very impressed.  Good job big men.

Running backs-  Early on the yards were hard to come by, but Doug Martin fought for every yard and refused to go down on first contact.  He displayed his speed and power often to the UGA defense by hitting the hole, breaking tackles, stiff arms, and juking the defenders.  D.J. Harper was held out longer than I expected but his contributions were vital to our 2nd half running attack. He hit the holes well, also broke tackles and ran well out of the Wild Cat formation.  Our backs looked great, even Harper got time at full back with Dan Paul out with an injury.  Credit goes to Gabe Linehan for stepping up and doing his best to open some holes.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends-  A lot of question this off season was about our WR corps.  No, we don’t have a deep threat… yet, but our coaching staff proved why we can still win ball games with the young, tall, talent we have.  Matt Miller had great hands, Mitch Burroughs provided some good yardage and speed through the middle of the field.  Kyle Efaw and Gabe Linehan were as good as we could have asked them to be with 9 catches and 92 yards between them.  We only had one drop, which can be credited to the UGA defender that made a good hit on Tyler Shoemaker.  Moore hit 9 different receivers in this game, which in my opinion sets a trend for this season- spreading the wealth…..

Quarterbacks-  The Sandwich man was at it again.  Getting off to a slow start at the first of the game, he settled into a groove.  Moore took what the defense gave him, which was usually 6-8 yard completions in the flats, or over the middle.  He eventually found holes in  UGA’s cover 2 zone , the holes usually over the middle behind the linebackers.  At half time, our coaches saw  damage could be done in the flats, and we came out gunning in the 3rd quarter.  Moore engineered a perfect drive, finding the flats over and over again.  Moore was 7-7 on the opening drive of the 3rd quarter and showed why he is one of the best quarterback in D-1 football by taking what was available and not rushing things.  Moore was flawless in the no-huddle offense and seemed to be most comfortable when we ran it.  Moore finished with  28-34, 261 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  Grant Hedrick provided great speed and good decision making as our Wild Cat QB.

Defensive line- Our defensive line was faster, more experienced, and made the difference for us in this game.  They allowed us to not have to put 7 and 8 men in the box to stop the UGA running attack.  As usual, we saw a lot of players rotated in and out of the defensive line.  Aside from our starters, we saw a lot of Jarrell Root, Michael Atkinson, and Tyler Horn.  The defensive line sacked Murray 6 times and by  deep in the game it was clear who was more physical, more conditioned, and was more hungry.  Our coaches mixed in different looks, at times using 3, 4, and 5 lineman.  At times the line was all standing and rotating, and at times Shea McClellin or Jarrell Root was dropped into coverage.  The looks helped give confusion and not let UGA front get into a rhythm.

Line Backers-  Not a lot to mention here.  We could have done a better job jamming Orson Charles at the line of scrimmage, but our linebackers did what they could and filled the holes well.  We did see a lot of bodies, Byron Hout, Aaron Tevis, J.C. Percy, Tommy Smith, and Blake Renaud

Defensive Backs-  This was great at times, and not so great.  Jerrell Gavins made some great plays in the passing game, but he needed to act more quickly on  the touchdown run by Brandon Boykin.  We have some issues at the safety position.  Ioane got the start for the suspended Febis and was pulled in the 2nd half for Travis Stanaway.  The touchdown pass to Orson Charles was a blown coverage by our safety.  The safety should have given help sooner over the top.

Special Teams-  Huge.  Brad Elkin did a phenomenal job. He pinned the Bulldogs time and time again with his punts.  Our kickoff coverage was spectacular barring one run by Burton to mid field.  Punt return coverage was great.  I like that we came out the first two or three times in a different look this year for punt.  It gave the UGA something new to see, and I am sure made coach Richt a bit uneasy.  Give Coach Choate much credit for having our special teams prepared for this and having a great game plan.

Wrap up.  UGA is a bit better than they realize.  They have the athletes; I think they need new coaches.  They are predominantly a play action, rollout team but it seemed as if Coach Richt wasn’t sure what exactly to do.  He used some drop back, rollouts, and play action, but was also using the spread running attack and neither one was giving him consistent results.  Boise knew what was working and they stuck to it.  There was no question who was more conditioned for this game. By the late 3rd quarter our big guys on both sides of the ball had control, and their receivers dropped (if I am correct) 4 passes.  And the great Jerry Rice said that the biggest thing that causes dropped passes is, you are tired.  That is why after practices he ran wind sprints, ran hills, went jogging, ran with the parachute on his back is because he did not want to drop passes, especially late in the game with the game on the line.   I think UGA has a ways to go in their strength and conditioning.   There is no question who the better coaching staff was that day.   We have Toledo on the road in two weeks, one game at a time.

P.S.- can anyone post the post game video?  Especially the trophy presentation… I didn’t get to hear anything that Coach Pete said about the game and about our fans….. Thanks Nugies.

One Bronco Nation Under God Hatemay’s Keys to the Game- UGA Edition

This year presents a new journalistic endeavor for Hatemay.  One in which I shall break down the X’s and O’s of the ways in which Boise State and its opponent can win the game.  This I will do on a basic level, and without the use of illustrations.  So, hopefully I can keep this simple. For those of who you may ask my credentials, I started 3 years as a high school quarterback in the  4A (Highest classification in my home state)  classification in Washington state.  We ran what was known as an "I" Formation, 3 wide out base offense with plenty of 4 wide out sets.  I have a thorough understanding of the game.  In a polite way, I probably know more about the fundamentals and advance fundamentals than most of you.  I am Hatemay, and these are my keys to the game.

One Bronco Nation Under God Hatemay's letter to the Big Boys

Dear Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12 and anyone else who gives a damn-

It was 11 months ago that I became somewhat excited about the prospect of playing in better competition with Boise State's invite to the Mountain West.  The only problem(s) was the recent departures of BYWho and Utah... then the later announcement of TCU leaving with their invite to the Little East.  Then, the Mountain West powers that be took some "brave" leaps by inviting the Top teams from the Wac to join the Mountain West for 2012 seasons.  What we have is the top Wac teams, with Air Force, San Diego St (the remaining long term Mountain West Teams that have produced good teams)  then a whole bunch of garbage.  UNLV, UNM, Wyoming, and Colorado State are just as pitiful as the Wac bottom feeders.

Now, fast forward to July 27th 2011 where it was announced that Boise State cannot wear its home blue uniform on its home blue turf as a condition mandated by the Mountain West conference,  not by the NCAA.  Commissioner Craig Thompson showed his true colors in a highly scrutinized video clip by two reporters questioning Commissioner Thompson  about the nature and reasoning behind this rule and the potential for other "special" rules.  Not only did the Commissioner make an ass out of himself, he most likely lied out right to the press on at least one occasion (I cannot enter the confines of his mind to prove that he was being dishonest, but common sense tells me he misled reporters on at least one answer to the media).  When asked if it was a deal breaker  he said, "I don't know, you have to ask Boise State."  Of course it was  rule breaker Craig... we aren't stupid.  Which President brought it up initially?  "Oh no... I uhhhh, no."  Come on Craig, most likely the President(s) in question were pissing and moaning to you, wining and dining with you, golfing at high end resorts and helping you satisfy your urges to the point that it became an issue to bring up as a condition to join the Mountain West.  When questioned about green on green, "... thats never been brought up. Maybe it will now."  Does it have as much to do with their winning, if they were 2-10, 0-11?  "Ya know, I don't know.  I can't get into everyone's head on that one, ya know I do know that Boise State has been quite successful in all orange."  Doesn't that set a weird precedent?.....  of random things that people decide is an unfair advantage?  "... and our presidents had heard people on their campuses simply that it was a competitive advantage." Craig, what people on our campuses said it was a competitive advantage????? Was that students, faculty, fans?  Isn't it a competitive advantage for a stadium to hold 105,000 fans that make the noise in their home stadium louder than most stadiums in the country?  Should Tennessee, Michigan and Ohio State be required to reduce the size of their stadiums to the "norm" of other stadiums so they don't gain an unfair advantage?  Lastly Thompson was pressed about it being a slippery slope that they were on with a rule such as this, to which he replied, "I don't think so , no."

Not a down of football has been played and this man has drawn the ire of the fans in Boise, and all around the Bronco Nation.  Clearly, the Board of Presidents and AD's are worried about something they shouldn't be worried about.  I have a concern that the SDSU people should be angry about.... Replay booth officials.... Why don't we remove the secrecy surrounding those nameless, faceless individuals who could be anyone, of any age, of any eye sight, of any football officiating IQ?  How about making a fuss about making the replays in college football be more like the replays in MLB, NBA, and NFL?  When a replay happens in the NFL, the referee goes over to the camera with a hood on it, and makes a decision, the NBA referees get together around the little TV and make the call.... but no, not in College football.  Hey Rocky Long, lobby for that instead of an unfair advantage of a blue field.

Craig Thompson is a puppet.  He is nothing but a turncoat.  He takes out Boise State to the mall, buys us a new pair of shoes, then vomits on them.

This is where I make a plea to the other power conferences.  Please, if it by thy will, take this cup from us.  I no longer enjoy Craig Thompson's Kool-Aid and his hair.  He is full of hot air.  Please, in the next few years invite us to your conference so we can play quality games the whole season.  Oh how sweet it would be to play against the likes of Oregon every year, Usc, UW, ASU, and others.  Or compete against Oklahoma St,  Texas, Tech, A&M, and OU..... Or play rival Michigan, State, Ohio State, Wisconsin on a weekly basis.  I love to win, but I am the first person to say that I am tired of watching us manhandle SJSU, NMSU, etc.  It is sad when we could run out two or three kids from Eagle High School or Bishop Kelly against those schools and no one would no because those teams are so bad.  I love to win, and I know we would not go undefeated every year in those confrences, but the level of play and quality of games would be better.  We could see what our qb and rb stats would be had our guys played an entire game.  Also we could benefit from the money that is brought to the AQ conferences each year because of the BCS.  Boise state plays a kind of football that is fast and sexy and attracts attention and gets fan to tune in to watch their games... even if a blue field helps that out.  Can't fault a man for having a genius PR moment.

Please, Big 12, Big 10, and Pac 12, this comes not from entitlement, not arrogance, but out of necessity for our program, for your conference, for everyone's mutual benefit, please let us it.  For hell's sake, Frank Stallone demands it.

Sincerely,

Hatemay
