Fielder injured

5

The part that caught my eye: "Daniels said neither Fielder nor Ian Kinsler, who was dealt to Detroit in the trade, took physicals as part of the transaction." Really? Taking on $168 million and no physical prior to deal. I though physicals were standard as part of a trade.

Angels 2014 primer from Yahoo

Yahoos analysis of 2014 Angels. There was a quote in the article that Blanton is not on the roster. DId I miss something? Was Blanton released?

2012 Angels 14th Best offense since 1963

4

Interesting - I didnt realize how good the offense was last year. Fangraphs link courtesy of Baseball Nation article about Detroit's historically bad baserunning. http://www.baseballnation.com/2013/10/20/4857258/alcs-2013-detroit-tigers-red-sox-season-review

Jeff Mathis Broken Collarbone

A setback after he got off to an amazing start.

Biggio will "study a little harder"

1

Seems classy guy. I always admired him playing for his entire career in Houston on a losing franchise. Hearing him speak openly, he doesn't appear to have anything to hide.

Babe Ruth Stats - A lot of triples

5

Random trivia. Just looked at Babe Ruth stats. He had 136 triples. Not bad for a big guy. Including 16 in a single year.

D-Backs sign Cody Ross

7

Red Sox and Phillies are out on Ross. Hopefully those rumors of being interested in Wells are true.

Fangraphs Team Stats - WAR

2

According to Fangraphs, the Angels lead the AL in WAR. How is WAR interpreted as a team statistic? Are the Angels actually overachieving this year? Do the Angels just have a few studs (cough...Trout...cough...Trumbo...cough...Weaver) bringing up the average for the whole team? Similarly, the Orioles have the WORSY Team WAR, but are still in the hunt for the Wild Card against expectations. Are they underachieving? I am confused.

Clippers work on free throws in advance of Game 4

Guess one of the Clipper coaches or players reads Clips Nation and heard our advice.

Rangers fans forgive Cruz

10

I can only pray that I would be as forgiving as these Ranger fans. In light of what Donnie Moore and Bill Buckner went through.

Cross your fingers, its now up to Vin accept to call the Angels last game of the season....

Mathis throws to wrong base. Thanks to Nocturne for posting this in the Post Game Thread, as I had not been able to watch it during the game. It is so unbelievable on multiple levels, it deserves to be posted. Never this situation before. The confusion on Haren. The confusion on the batter. On first glance it appears Mathis body movements that he is actually throwing towards second but somehow the ball went to first. I had to rewatch it multiple times just to see the ball go towards first. Weren't his teammates screaming to him "Runner's going, hes going, he's going"? Also props to Trumbo for catching the ball. He could not have been expecting it. So what is the consensus now, band together and nominate Mathis for ASG?

Well, this should come as hardly a surprise.... Halos are a respectable 9th in MLB in team hits....

Averages

Well, this should come as hardly a surprise.... Halos are a respectable 9th in MLB in team hits. A league average 17th in AVG (I guess that discrepancy in hits vs AVG represents a poor walk rate). A paultry 22nd in HR. And an unconvincing 24th in team runs. But Wooooooo! At a whopping 2.37 League Leaders in Hits to Produce a Run. League average is only 2.05....pppppppfff... "Wow, Dad, you must've jumped that car 40 feet." "Thats something to be proud of, Russ." "Wow dad, we must have jumped that rail by like 50 yards." "Nothing to be proud of, Russ"

Can LeBron Transform From Choker To Champ? A Sport Psychologist Has A Game Plan

7

Interesting analysis, written by a sports psychologist about an All-Star who recently became stiff in clutch situations. And how this All-Star should regain his composure. My mind immediately jumped to the Halos who are very un-clutch at the plate this year and Kazmir whose pysche seems crushed (I still have his facial expression tatooed on my memory banks, after the throwing error on the sac bunt against the Yankees in the ALCS).

Scioscia calls team meeting

Team meeting before tonight's game. Swing free and easy, kids. Nice motto on life.

They out-survived the dinosaurs and the Great Flood. And the RAID traps that I put in my backyard. Quite an infestation, these ugly cockroaches can be a mess to get rid of.

Scioscia Guardian of the Angels [old article]

+

The Simers article reminded me of this article (from 2009 I believe) about Soth and his managerial style. Interesting take on his very effective approach to managing his talent. "I was always trying to please him," [Schoeneweis] says. "I wanted him to like me."

TJ Simers punches the Angels' Sosh

13

Caught this article mentioned by bc56274 in the post game thread. I personally cannot stand SImers, and think he is a jerk. But I gotta admit some truth to what he is saying about this Angels team. Particularly this criticism of Sosh: "As tightly wound as everyone appears to be, it's no surprise that the last eight games Scioscia has missed for whatever reason, his relaxed players have gone 8-0."

Angels' Scott Kazmir could return as reliever

15

phew! I was starting to get worried about the strength of our bullpen.

Nature's Gatorade - Coconut Water

9

This is completely off-topic, but what the hay. This article stood out to me for 2 reasons. 1) New sports product which may develop into a trend. 2) An athlete (Garnett) forgoes millions of dollars in endorsements to instead pitch a product that he rally believes in. "Follow your heart, kid, and you'll never go wrong." (Bonus points if you get that quote.

Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No from NoMasTV

Vin Mazzaro of Kansas City got shelled for 14 runs in 2.2 innings. He went to the stadium unprepared to pitch and got called in to pitch a day early. Be prepared! Reminded me of Doc Ellis thinking he had the day off, dropping LSD, then pitching an 8 walk no-hitter. This video is a hilarious recount by Ellis with James Blagden animating.

Baserunners Will Continue to Dare Mathis

Napster cooling down

9

Ok, Wells is taking a crap on my patience, OPS around .500, and the Napster is playing Bitter Ex Part Deux (think Vlad in Tex), OPS around 1.000. On the bright side, after 3 K's last night (and stranding 3 runners) Napoli is down to .222. Woo!

"Assembly OKs bill to dissolve Vernon..." .... Wells's contract? Rats! Temporarily got my hopes up, only to be foiled by some corrupt town named Vernon that Wikipedia describes as being known "pungent meatpacking plants."

Pirates call up Woody - Arggh

For all you Fantasy baseball players who need a jolt.

Delgado Retires

4

Carlos Delgado retires. He was never an Angel, but he was a heck of a ballplayer and as a baseball fan, I respect him. He appears to me a gentleman with his smile and Roberto Clemente Award and appears to be steroid-free and still managed 2038 hits and 473 HR. He deserves an honorable mention.

Running the Numbers -Fieldf/x for Defense Analysis

5

Just want to say I am amazed at all of the data analysis and Sabermetrics I have seen posted on the website...my hat is off to everyone. This article discusses a new system of motion picture cameras [Fieldf/x] used to analyze how good a defender really is. It also serves as a primer as a history of Sabermetrics, some of the main players involved, and some of the business side (since it is published in Bloomberg Businessweek.)
