We don't want no stinking FA PG
Last week, I put up a poll with all of the non-"untouchable" PGs and asked who you'd like to see as our starter next year. I don't know how many people are on BE, but I'd think that 319 votes would be a statistically accurate sample.
The main lesson (to me) was that BE readers really don't want any of the free agent PGs who are out there. Andre Miller barely beat out Jason Kidd, but both were way behind the top 4 (Devin Harris, Captain Kirk, Ricky Rubio and Rajon Rondo). They were also behind Steve Nash, Calderon and Bayless (??!!??).
So KP, we have spoken, and we want a trade. (But for me, personally, I wouldn't give up too much for Captain Kirk, as I don't think he looks much different in our system than Blake.)
- I was a little surprised that Russell Westbrook got so few votes. I believe that people don't have him in their heads because there is no trade talk around him. Perhaps he belongs on the untouchables - or is there no interest in Stumptown?
Direct KP: Pick your PG
Who do you want for our PG next year? Now that the draft is over, we have a better idea of what we've got going into the free agency period. The GMs should pretty quickly figure out who is going to sign early and where the bidding ward will be. With all that resolved, it will be time to trade!
For the poll, assume KP can work his magic and get anyone on there without giving up anything you care about losing. That isn't likely, but this is about who you think would be the best option. For some bit of reality, I've left off a few "untouchables"/too obvious when cost isn't considered options: CPIII, Tony Parker, Chauncey Billups and Deron Williams and Derrick Rose.
Interest in Nash, or speculation
Marc Stein is claiming that Portland is considering a trade for Steve Nash and that we would be the front runners with Outlaw and Bayless in return. (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=stein_marc&page=Chatter-090518)
Nash is a spectacular player, but he hasn't exactly helped other teams reach the promised land. With his suspect defense, back problems and advanced age, could the Blazers really be looking at him, or is someone just trying to stir the pot.
I've loved his game since seeing him battle Dionn Holton at the Chiles Center many years ago. However, I can't see him helping build Portland into a contender and I hope they stay away.
Petteri getting more play in Italy
My Italian is rather limited (zero), but I've been able to find a few stories and box scores. Petteri's team, Virtus Bologna is currently second in the Italian league, and doing pretty well. Until recently, PK had been behind Earl Boykins on the PG depth chart, but it looks like they were starting both of them together some recently.
In what could be good news for PK, it looks like Boykins and the team aren't seeing eye-to-eye, and he may be on the way out.
He's been inconsistent so far, but they clearly see potential in him. I'm hoping the increased role allows him to really develop as a PG.
