The Ludo: A Soccer Ball That Racks Up Cash For The Developing World As You Play

+

From the makers of the soccer ball you kick around to generate light comes their next thing: a soccer ball you kick around to generate funds towards humanitarian efforts. It'll be released on Nov 7, but you can get your name on the waiting list now.

Interview with Dave Tenney

1

In an interview with our fitness coach, Tenney talks about how the Sounders spend big bucks on fancy science so they can: 1) Measure residual fatigue on a weekly basis. 2) Create an individualized recovery protocol for almost every player. 3) Learn that training less often leaves our team fresher. 4) Make accurate squat rotation decisions, because we know which players are most likely to bring an optimized performance.

Look what's at miadidas.com! You probably already know that you can customize your own shoes (with electricity and super cyan colors), but did you know that you can customize your shoe with the Sounders badge? We're one of a handful of MLS teams that get that option.

Autopsy of a Goal

1

I wish there were more graphics like this that break down how we scored or conceded a run-of-play goal. I don't know how to draw triangles in soccer yet (and apparently I still call it soccer), but perhaps I'll be able to see it when I see more of this type of analysis.

Vagenas on trial with Whitecaps

5

There was also a new face at practice as the club welcomed midfielder Peter Vagenas on trial. The MLS veteran had been looking forward to playing in Japan, but with the J.League season postponed due to the earthquakes that have ravaged the country, so too were his plans to play abroad "I wanted to try something new," said Vagenas. "I’ve known [Whitecaps FC director of soccer operations] Tommy [Soehn] for years and he literally picked up the phone and said get up off your couch and come train.

MLSsoccer.com BETA (now with Opta)

Project Ramos represents the continuing evolution of MLSsoccer.com with improvements in many areas, including: 1) Improved homepage navigation, with direct links to our most popular content sections at the bottom of every page and new content sections so that you can see all articles in a particular series on one page. 2) Search: Use this to find articles that you may have missed. 3) An upgraded MatchCenter, which provides a fully engaged experience and includes the first enhanced stats from our new stats partner Opta Sports. 4) Upgraded stats section, with more stats, easier navigation and a full historical stats section. 5) Club logos at the top to allow easy navigation to all Club sites. 6) Two new fantasy games that launched a couple of weeks ago Send your feedback to feedback@mlssoccer.com. I was hoping for Heat Maps, or Passing Charts, but instead the new MatchCenter simply has a handful more stats to display: Duels Won # %, Total Passes #, Passing Accuracy %, and Possession %.

This film is based on a true story. In 1986 a football team that lived on a little island in the south of Thailand called "Koh Panyee". It's a floating village in the middle of the sea that has not an inch of soil. The kids here loved to watch football but had nowhere to play or practice. But they didn't let that stop them. They challenged the norm and have become a great inspiration for new generations on the island.

Soccer Made in the U.S.: Where M.L.S. Stands, Soccermetrically Speaking?

2

I found this NYTimes blog piece via Seattle Soccer Examiner. "M.L.S. shooters are much more efficient: M.L.S. clearly outpaces the European leagues with a whopping goal-to-shot ratio of .155 during the 2010 season, or 1 goal in 6.5 shots taken. That is almost twice as high as in Serie A, and more 30 percent higher than in La Liga, the Bundesliga, and the E.P.L.!" Although can't you argue that their keepers are better?

Charity Bowl weekend before First Kick

+

Saw that a couple Seahawk players were going to have their Charity Bowl the weekend between our Community Shield match and MLS First Kick. I started freaking out wondering if they would have enough time to convert the lines at Qwest, but then I saw the 2010 pictures. It looks like the flag-footballers are playing on top of soccer lines. Phew.

SmorgasBorg: US Open Cup already has a savior in Seattle

+

(EDIT: Putting in my own thoughts instead of summarizing article) There are two themes I see in the comments from other fans. 1) Who cares about a 2nd-rate trophy, how about winning a play-off game first? To which I answer: Yes, the MLS Cup is more prestigious than the USOC, but the whole point of this article was how to raise the profile of the USOC. We raise it by caring. It doesn't matter that you don't want it, because we won't give it to you. People eventually want what they can't have. 2) Who's to say Sounders care about it more? They field their B squad just like everybody else. You're right. We field a team that thinks we can win, and other teams do the same. Now we got to get the other teams to care and do the same.

Radiolab Presents: The Loneliness of the Goalkeeper

8

Here's a BBC radio piece (~20 minutes) about the psyche of goalkeepers. It kinda makes you wonder: who in the right mind would want to play that position?

Kasey Keller Dec-17 radio interview with Gas Man

1

14 minute chat with Kasey Keller and the Gas Man. Here's my transcription of the parts I found interesting: (Maybe after next year you want to come back and play some more, or are you really done?) "You never want to say never, but I don’t see it happening at all. I truly see it being the case of this is my last year. A lot of - kind of what the delays were in getting the contract done was kind of some discussions that myself and the club were having about when I’m done playing. I see myself being with the Sounders for a long, long time, even if it’s a case of maybe doing something else to gain experience to come back, or not. Or just truly being with the organization for the rest of my post-season career. I could see that very comfortably as well." (So you did have discussions about what else you can do in the Sounders organization after this year?) "Correct, but the hard part is that I also don’t want to say ‘hey look, I want you to give me his job when I’m done playing.’ It’s a case of more open dialogue and different situations that I’d be willing to pursue. Well if you say, ‘Do you want to go into management? Do you want to go into coaching side? Do you want to go into media?’ How do you know unless you try all the different things? So to be able to say, ‘this is what I definitely want to do at this stage.’ I think it was more of just multiple conversations about the different opportunities that could be available when I’m done without truly being able to say, ‘this is what you’re going to do.’ Because you just don’t know at that stage what positions are available on that side of it." (Regarding Away Tickets) "If you get 64,500 Sounder fans, and 500 Timbers and Vancouver fans up in a big corner; I’m all for that. But I never ever like to give away any kind of home field advantage just for the sake of bringing a bunch of fans in. We don’t need it. Vice versa, we’ll never be able to bring that kind of support to their stadiums, so why give them that advantage? That’s just the way I look at it. I had to play in too many national team games here in America where I was the away team. That’s not a lot of fun to play in. The scary part about that is that we could probably play 40 or 50 countries in New York and be the away team. That’s not a fun proposition to be a part of. I know that it won’t get quite to that extreme here, but I was at that Kansas City Chiefs game, and there were too many Chiefs fans in [Qwest Field] to my liking. That’s not fun when you’re a player when you step out in your home game and you see that much color from the other team. I just don’t want to see that at all."

Fredy Montero radio interview with Gas Man

+

Fredy did a 7 minute interview with the Gas Man in english. Fredy talks about his family. He says he's looking to play in Europe within or after 2 years. When asked if he thinks Colombian kids are looking up to him and thinking about playing for the MLS someday, Fredy said that he had an eye on MLS when he was little. (I think. I could've misinterpreted his broken english)

MLS Playoffs a Predictable Exercise: It's All About Fatigue

1

This site has an interesting statistic that "Since that summer [of 2008], there have 18 playoff series in MLS, including the four just completed. The team that played fewer games that year has won 15 of the 18 series." In other words, the reason why the Sounders lost to the Galaxy was because we played 42 games vs their 34 games. I call BS because correlation does not equal causation, and also because of the small sample size. But I also think it'll be interesting to keep an eye on this in the future.

NYTimes: Surge in Attendance at Men’s College Games

1

More attendance news, but this time it doesn't have to do with Seattle. Numbers are up in college soccer games. Does more fans at college level sports lead to more fans of professional level? Is this a sign that MLS draft could be as big as NFL and NBA draft? Or is this a sign that the world will be consumed with over-population?

The MLS Playoffs are Broken; FanHouse Has the Fix

2

Here's an interesting take on how the playoffs could happen by increasing the amount of post-season from 4 matches to 5 or 6 matches: 2 groups of 4, then home and home*, then finals. * = there's an interesting wrinkle that I haven't seen anywhere else, and would make it even more confusing to explain it to your average joe.

Sturgis gamble pays off for Seattle

1

I remember midway through this season I wanted the Sounders to do a 12th Man campaign like the Seahawks, but saw that #12 was already taken by Sturgis. I remember asking my friend, "who is this guy?" and since then he's been on a tear. So much so that MLSsoccer.com did a spot on him.

Could Friendly C have been USMNT vs Columbia?

Could Friendly C have been USMNT vs Columbia? Below is a transcript of Matt Gaschk talking to Softy on Oct. 14 about attendance numbers on Tuesday. What I’m reading in between the lines when Matt...

Matt Gaschk on KJR with Softy - on Nkufo coming out of the attacking third

5
Here's a blurb from audio about how Nkufo played in the USOC finals. Softy: Tell me about Nkufo coming out of the attacking third of the field, because he goes back into the midfield a lot. Matt Gaschk: Against Columbus in particular when you saw him coming back into the midfield, what’s he’s doing is drawing Chad Marshall, who’s their best defender, away from the goal, and really giving Fredy Montero more space closer to the goal, which is where, you know, when Fredy Montero has the ball closest to the goal he’s dangerous. So [Nkufo] is drawing players away, and really getting them out of their comfort zone because they have to mark him. They can’t leave him open because they saw what happened the first time around when they left him open; he scored 3 goals against them. So by him coming back into the midfield away from the attacking third, he’s creating more space and more opportunities for Fredy Montero, and in turn Steve Zakuani and Sanna Nyassi as well. We kind of saw the results of that as well; Sanna Nyassi scored 2 goals.
