At the Quarter Pole

Without snarky self-loathing pessimism, where would Giants fans be? That being said, at the quarter pole, the 2005 Giants have played slightly better than the 2004 Giants.

As everyone will remember, in the first quarter of 2004, the Giants started off disastrously, going 17-24, with 165 RS and 221 RA. In April 2004, they batted just .268 and had a whopping team ERA of 5.55.

The 2005 Giants have started off 19-22 with 182 RS and 212 RA. They're batting .268 and have a team ERA of 4.72.

In 2004, after being swept by Pittsburg, the Giants bounced back with a 10 game win streak to end May, sweeping both Arizona and Colorado. The Giants did this with Bonds batting just .250 and hitting 4 HR in May. Giants pitching allowed just 28 runs over the 10 game stretch.

Unfortunately, the 2005 Giants have cooled off going into May. In April, the Giants hit .279 and were ninth in the league in RS. In May, the Giants have hit .255 and are twenty-eighth in the league in RS. In the meantime, pitching has remained consistently mediocre with an April ERA of 4.97 and a May ERA of 4.64 (both bottom third of the league).

But here's hoping the Giants can put together another hot streak and climb back into this thing.

Your Giantsophile Memory

So I was surprised to read in the Wired story that Grant is only 27 years of age. That puts him squarely in the same advertiser-friendly demographic as me. This got me thinking. There is this scene in Sideways where Miles talks about his "first bottle," the one that turned him into an oenophile. So I'm wondering - what was the Giants game that turned you into a Giantophile?

My choice: Game 4 of the 1987 NL playoffs. I was eleven years old, sitting in the left field bleachers with my dad. What a great game. Some bum named Krukow pitched a complete game. But my favorite moment was when my favorite player Jeffrey Hac Man Leonard blasted a 2 run homer right into the area in front of the bleachers where I was sitting, followed of course by his famous one-flap down. I spent the entire next day practicing my home run trot around the yard with my one, scrawny white-boy flap down.
