Colt and Chris Ogbonnaya Lead Browns to Victory
6-3 over Earl Thomas and the Seahawks. Not exactly the most stimulating game ever, but a win is a win, right? Now if they can only get Shipley from Cincinnatti and Quan Cosby from Denver...
Earlier in the week, team president Mike Holmgren, who took over in Cleveland after 10 seasons in Seattle, had to defend Shurmur's early performance and pleaded patience from Browns fans. Shurmur's West Coast offense remains a work in progress, but quarterback Colt McCoy managed the game, made a few plays and protected Cleveland's slim lead in the final minutes.
Who is Most Responsible for the 2010 Debacle?
You have four choices:
1) Mack Brown, under whose leadership this team never seemed to improve very much from week to week. For the first time during his tenure at Texas, he was challenged, and has been found wanting. Can you blame the kids if they can't catch or throw but Mack still insists on playing them again and again? Can you blame Greg Davis if he can't call a play to save his life, but Mack still insists on letting him again and again? At the end of the day, shouldn't the guy who is paid handsomely to make the hard choices be ultimately responsible when he either refuses or is incapable of making those hard choices?
2) Greg Davis, master of the 5-yard bubble screen when we need 10 for a first down. What else needs to be said? If you're ESPN, you think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not so much if you actually bother to watch and evaluate his mystifying playcalling game after game.
3) Garrett Gilbert, who seems to have regressed since being thrown into the national championship game. GG seems to only know how to throw a ball three ways: a foot above his receiver's heads, directly into their shins, or directly into the defender's hands.
4) The Entire Texas Team, every single 4-star and 5-star recruit, for not being able to catch, run, or seemingly tackle at various points in the year.
Mark Schlabach Thinks we Need a New Offensive Coordinator, Too
The Longhorns seem to have more serious problems than just struggling to replace departed quarterback Colt McCoy and star receiver Jordan Shipley. The Longhorns' offense has been a mess and it still can't run the ball consistently. Now the defense is giving up a bunch of points, too. Coach Mack Brown might have to make some tough calls with his coaching staff, including whether he needs fresh ideas from a new offensive coordinator.
Maybe Schlabach can get the national media ball rolling. The sports national media are like sheep: one guy starts harping on something, another guy joins in, and before you know it, they're all saying the same thing, ala the lazy writing on the Boise State underdog story to start the year.
Ivan Maisel Yuks it up at the Expense of the Horns
Now was that really called for? No. My apologies to Texas fans. When you come to Yankee Stadium to see your Longhorns in the Pinstripe Bowl, be sure to call me for restaurant recommendations.
Ouch.
Did our Fire Greg Davis hope just get raised, or a false alarm? You decide.
Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic, but this may be the first time I've ever heard Mack Brown sorta point a finger at his best pal Greg Davis. Granted, it's hard to gauge "tone" in a article, but here it is anyway.
Via the Statesman.
"Usually it's a bunch of different things," offensive coordinator Greg Davis said. "One of the things we did was spread the field with a bunch of short throws. We got a couple balls to Mike (Davis) early. We got the ball to James (Kirkendoll). Some of the first half was a little bit by design. We didn't stretch the field as much as we should have."
But isn't that the same thing the Longhorns did and said against Oklahoma? In fact, isn't that what Texas has been doing all year?
"I don't know," Brown said of Saturday's struggles. "You'll have to ask Greg (Davis). He calls the plays."
Now granted, I don't spend all my Sundays listening to Mack Brown's post-game pressers or anything, so I have no idea if this is the first time he's sorta pointed a finger at GD for anything.
Or maybe he's not pointing, maybe he's just saying, matter-of-fact, it's GD's job, etc, and I'm just gasping at straws trying to read between the lines when there is nothing to read.
You decide.
(Sorry if this fanpost comes out FUBAR. First time, etc.)
