People seem to have a lot of conflicting feelings about Bill Simmons' and the quality of various writings on Grantland. Not sure I agree with everything he says here, but a very well written, long (as usual), and insightful piece of sports "literature" about the current standoff between the Owners and Players (and Agents...oh my).

Some Pavement lyrics come to mind:
"Pigs, they tend to wiggle when they walk
the infrastructure rots
and the owners hate the jocks
with their agents and their dates

if the signatures are checked
you'll just have to wait

and we're counting up the instants that we save
tired nation so depraved
from the cheap seats see us
wave to the camera
it took a giant ramrod
to raze the demon settlement"

It seems like this writer is simply bringing up the oft discussed idea of boycotting games once the NBA resumes. I'm more interested in the thought of boycotting the owners other business ventures, to send them a message. Does anyone know if something such as this is being tried or has been tried before?

I honestly don't know what the various owners other business ventures are, but if I knew that one of the more obstructionist owners were a major owner of some chain store, well, I might not shop there anymore. I keep hearing that the players (and fans) have little leverage in this dispute because many of the owners are losing more when the league plays (under the last CBA, anyways) than when it doesn't. Well, what if we could hit the pocketbooks of their other (supposedly) more profitable business ventures? They may not care what we NBA fans have to say, but when their other corporate Board Members pester them about any damage to the share value of their other ventures, might that get their attention?

Just wondering if this idea resonates with anyone else, and if so, how might we go about finding out the various owner's other major holdings and get the message out to all NBA fans to stop feeding the beast!

I'd wondered whether NBA.com would prove to be a shill for the owners but this article, at the least, appears to be pretty even-handed. Informative too. Though it still doesn't really shed light on perhaps the most important question, whether the owners' claimed $300 million losses are valid (or are dramatically overstated).
Anyways, thought I would share for those interested.

Yet another article on the labor situation and the owner's claims of major losses and unsustainability. Seems like an attempted honest appraisal (though without the books being made available by teams, we're left to extrapolate from incomplete data). This seems about right to me, and that "fairness" can largely be achieved with a reduction in the player percentage to between 50 and 55% and a more equitable revenue sharing arrangement between teams (much closer to the player's apparent position than the owner's, as I understand it). But glad for any more economically minded folks to correct me if I'm mis-representing things based on some fallacious facts or logic.

Here's a (seemingly) well-intentioned and balanced analysis of Tyler's most recent play. There are a bunch of clips as well. Not sure if this leaves me more or less hopeful, but perhaps most interesting is this guy's analysis that Jeremy was much more effective after the team's starting 4 left and he was able to play there instead of inside at the 5. This may speak to his being more athletic than strong (as a 20 year-old). But it does sound like whatever his strongest attributes are, his post game against real defense is pretty under-developed. Nice to at least see those rebounding numbers and concerning to see how much he fouls and his terrible ft% (though not quite Beans' bad-and if you look at the clips, the form looks somewhat better than the outcome so there's likely room to improve?).

In any event, real NBA size and athleticism and a modicum of skill and BBIQ combined with youth are worth tagging a bit of We Believe hope to. :0)

Go Jeremy Tyler!!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I apologize for bringing this Dwayne Jones guy up again and am mostly just waiting for someone to explain why this guy isn't worth giving a shot (and if he is, can we make sure the GM has him on the radar!).

Check out the guy's stats going all the way back to college (where he was A-10 Defensive Player of the Year) and he is consistently an absolute monster on the boards and while never dominant offensively, appears to have developed his ability to draw fouls and gotten his ft% into the 60's.
The latest I know about him was that he was signed in the 2010 pre-season by the Suns, then waived (after playing in only 3 games, totaling 10 rebounds and 6 fta in 25 minutes). Since then he appears to be playing in a Chinese league (where he is again averaging over 16 rebounds/game). Maybe he's a bad seed (though I've never seen anything to that effect) or wouldn't break his Chinese contract for a brief NBA contract this year? Otherwise, he seems to have real NBA size at the 4 or 5, has proven consistently dominant (albeit in NBDL) in areas that the Warriors need (rebounding and a foul drawing inside presence), and may even be defensively oriented as well. While no spring chicken, he is only 27 and seems to still be adding some new skills to his game over the past few seasons.

I will humorously note that Draft Express lists his upside as Dan Gadzuric. While I appreciated Gadzuric's hustle and modest remaining athleticism, we definitely need someone who brings a bit more than he did. But if Jones were equivalent to a Gadzuric when he was 27, with more offensive aggressiveness and a better foul shot, that'd be worth a sub $1 million contract in my book.
Thoughts or more insight as to why this guy hasn't been able to stick in the bigs yet? Thanks!

I know that there are discussions elsewhere of the Warriors trading for Iguodala (perhaps combined with Brand). Might this incident provide a brief window to work a more advantageous trade for Iguodala? I have no reason to think this incident is a big deal, besides this article, but thought I'd pass it along. Golden State Of Mind The Mascot question, again

Thunder has been gone a couple years now and I honestly don't claim to specifically miss him/it that much. I do, however, miss our having a mascot (and I more specifically miss that crazy inflatable/deflatable version of Thunder which would often appear during the latter half of games, dancing as if on the pipe, belligerently seeking out opposing fans to bonk.)

Especially if the Warriors are having a special, playoff-potential season, it seems pathetic (and apathetic on management's part) that we remain without a mascot. What are peeps ideas for a new mascot and how can we, as a fanbase, encourage new management to address this lack?

(PS - I assume that part of the reason why a new mascot has not yet been unveiled was the pending sale of the team which was probably deemed likely for the past few years now. Why not wait and let the new ownership have another way to brand the franchise their own way? Whatever the reason, there is no longer an excuse for long once the new ownership is official. Let's start the discussion now!)

If only to make up for Joe Ingles nearly poking away his basketball livelihood, perhaps we could bring Jon Scheyer into camp as a potential back-up at the 1/2? Apparently he's now cleared for basketball. I'm not sure why he's no longer going to the Jazz camp (some unsubstantiated rumors that his hometown Bulls may be interested) but if he is still available he seems worth a try.
I know he is often referred to as unathletic (though that may simply be a euphemism) and that his wingspan isn't fab, but he's a legit 6'5" with a solid rep as a defender, a great assist/to ratio, a good shooter and an efficient scorer (see his 21 points in 75 seconds in HS). By all measures he's a good character guy and a consistent winner. Oh yeah, and to match the J Lin demographic conspiracy theorists, he could drive ticket/jersey sales amongst the Bay Area Jewish community. Maybe we'd even get to see the Rally Rabbi more than once a year?
Would he be a worthwhile camp invitee as a guard? If not, who else should/are the Warriors bringing to camp?

Golden State Of Mind Does Warriors marketing have inside information about Andris?

This is an honest question wondering whether the Warriors marketing/apparel sales apparatus takes Team Management info into account in planning their sales and distributions. The question comes up upon looking at the Warriors Team Store and it makes me wonder about Biedrins' future with the Warriors.

On the linked page, there are new jersey T-shirts available for Ellis, Curry, Lee, D. Wright, B. Wright and Jeremy Lin. There is not one available for Andris. I can certainly understand Ellis, Lee, and Curry driving apparel sales ahead of Andris, and perhaps their wanting to push D. Wright as a major new acquisition (whether accurate or not). I also understand the buzz around J. Lin which they may be intelligently taking advantage of. On the other hand, it is difficult to see why B. Wright (whom I actually like and whom I hope will learn to fly again...) should get higher billing or seem likely to have more of a following than Biedrins (what of our boistrous Latvian fanbase!).

Was this simply an oversight or do they know something we don't about the likelihood of Andris being dealt?

Additionally, I have in the past noted the Jersey Clearance opportunities which occur around when someone gets dealt, and for some reason Andris' Hardwood Classic jersey is the one on sale right now. I also realize that at the moment his is the only one for sale at all, so perhaps his are the only remaining ones?

In any event, not trying to stir up trouble and I'm hoping that there's some other less nefarious reasons but just thought I'd point it out and see if anyone has more inside info or thoughts re: this. I personally hope Andris stays with us, gets his FT % above the speed limit (ideally of interstate highways, though I'd settle for 55 at this point), and other wise returns to his productive if not wholly spectacular self of old. I'd particularly hate to sell at such a low-point on him and not get good value in return. How much could any team justify giving for him as a (and I always have to look this up again to make sure it's not a typo) 16% free throw shooter last season!

Go Andris (as in to Rick Barry, asap)!!!!!!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Golden State Of Mind Other potential FA bigs?

I know that many seem to hope we sign Amundson this week, and I'm not opposed myself if at a reasonable price. Nevertheless, even if we sign him we seem pretty thin at the 5 (with Udoh out, and Andris and Wright's injury histories). If we don't sign Amundson (and perhaps even if we do), who else might we look at as an inexpensive FA acquisition down low?

What about Dwayne Jones of the D-League? Is there something wrong with his game or attitude that he hasn't stuck in the NBA yet? I know that he's already 27, but he appears to have developed an astounding rebound skill in the past 2 years (16 rpg last season) to go with solid shooting and block numbers (17.6ppg, fg%.598, ft%.667, 1.8bpg). Actually he was a pretty great rebounder and shot blocker back in college at St. Joseph's too. Having not seen him play much (saw a few Toros games last year), I assume there's some reason the Suns cut him after the playoffs and more recently the Raptors this month? Just wondering as his numbers are truly gaudy, particularly in some useful areas for the Warriors.

So...if anyone knows more about Dwayne Jones or would like to opine about other worthwhile free agent bigs, I'd love to see the discussion!

Golden State Of Mind If Marcus Williams could shoot...

I think he'd be worth having traded for a protected 1st round pick. He has amazing court vision and passing ability whenever I've seen him play this year (though tonight's 4th quarter in particular).

Unfortunately, he seems to be a truly below average shooter (though he did somehow manage to shoot 38% from 3 last year with a moderate number of attempts) and we've only gotten to see him with the second team which isn't as efficient at finishing off of his dimes.

Just wondering if anyone else has gotten the same sense as me that his ability to find other players and get them the ball in good scoring position truly stands out in relation to the Warriors other "point guards." Honestly, I think that CJ has been playing very well and Jamal Crawford has a bit of point guard in him but you really see the difference when a player is a natural "true" point guard. (Oh Baron, how we miss thee...)

Guess I'm just saying that I see flashes of what the Dubs likely saw when going after Marcus Williams this past summer. Too bad he's a less than tenacious or quick defender with a poor and erratic shot. Still, if he could modestly address those issues, there's a double digit assist man waiting to come out.

I'm normally a big stat guy and honestly, his stats don't tend to back up my contentions as prior to this year he's yet to average even a 2 to 1 Ast/to ratio. Nevertheless, just wondering if anyone else sees what I see in terms of his feel for the offense and his passing ability?

Golden State Of Mind If we decided to trade Maggette...

who would be a viable alternative?

It is my understanding that Corey Maggette has been (by league rule) untradeable until December 15th. Given his terrible last game (and now re-occurance of his hamstring injury), now may not be the time to trade him but let's just say that he strings together a few good games to remind other teams of his potential value (which, in the right situation is actually somewhat considerable.)

Corey Maggette, assuming that he is no worse than the player he's been the past 3+ seasons, is one of the best players in the league at getting to the foul line and cashing in. He brings some other solid talents as well (his yearly Hollinger PER close to 20 as "proof"), but playing him at the 4 in an intentionally fast-paced offense seems to emphasize some of his worst tendencies (lackadaisical transition defense and forcing shots early in the shot clock when given a green light to do so). Although my instinct is that he is who he is, it is possible that he will grow over time into the role that Don Nelson seems to want to force him into. But... let's say that what we're currently seeing from him is what we're going to get. Should we trade him soon and, if so, who might we reasonably trade him for?

Two thoughts, though I fear that the length of Maggette's contract would make these non-starters without others thrown in, are Gerald Wallace or Josh Howard. In both cases I have read elsewhere of their being shopped and re:Dallas, I've read that the Mavs are/were specifically interested in Maggette.

So... would you trade Maggette straight up for one of these guys? I know it's fun right now to bash Maggette, but he is a 20+ scorer, (among the) best in the league at getting fouled, and a beast of a mismatch at the 2 if he can hit the 3 at a decent percentage (38% last season, only 18% for us this season). Keep in mind, he's also been less than 100% for all but a few games thusfar this season, bringing up two points: 1) healthy, he may be a better fit for the Dubs than he's shown thusfar; and 2) he's always been injury prone, perennially playing only 65-75 games/season.

If we traded Maggette, do Wallace or Howard provide what we need in return as they are both somewhat similarly sized to Maggette (minus the guns) and neither is a great 3 point shooter either. They're both probably better rebounders and defenders though (Wallace in particular, but then again, he's injury prone too). Or do we go in a different direction and trade him for a young 4 who can shoot the 3 (Bargnani or Yi plus players and picks) to match Nellie's preferred style of play?
