From Pete Prisco at CBSSports.....I normally can't stomach this guy, but I thought it was a good read. Hope I'm not late on this one.

I know that a lot of my fellow fans are bemoaning the FA situation but, let's keep this in perspective.....free agents are generally the finishing touches for the most successful teams. Herm got it right in not building exclusively through free agency....you need a strong core of developed players to be successful. Cobbling together a team of cast-offs (in most cases) from other teams is a sure way to waste a season without getting any better...I would rather us spend/invest the money in/on two or three good FA signings and four or five speculative ones instead of loading up our team with big name/small contribution players who manage to sell jerseys but not win games......

I'm frustrated with the current level of performance of this team, I would gather that most fans of this team are. But it seems that some of us are so comfortable tossing insults and heaping scorn on the players, the coaches or the organization that we have forgotten that if we really want to call ourselves fans, then or critiques have to be tempered with some measure of support. Otherwise we start looking less like fans and more like emotionally abusive alcoholic parents, where nothing is ever good enough.

These guys did well this week in comparision to what they've shown us in previous weeks. There are areas for MASSIVE improvement but I think these guys played with some pride this week. My wife and I went to the Titans debacle and she was almost in tears looking at the body language that the players on our sidelines were showing. They looked totally defeated. I've had never seen a more melancoly looking group of players then we saw on that day and the fact that that same group can show the kind of swagger that they have shown in the last two weeks is remarkable. I wish that the last two games could have been victories but I'm happy that this club is still willing to go out and compete.

With the continued improvements in play and attitude, I think we might be looking at a different ball club in the near future. Coaching and front office issues aside let's not turn into the kind of fans that look for any reason to tear down our team when they're struggling. This thing is turning around and our young players are showing flashes of potential. The players are showing some pride, why don't we all do the same?

Troy Smith anyone????

Look, it is obvious that our current choices at QB are like trying to decide which hand you would rather have amputated (no pain-killers of course) and our O-Line has the protection ability of a fishnet condom, I recommend going after Troy Smith. Baltimore seems hell-bent on proving that drafting Joe Flacco was not a mistake while a talented player like Troy Smith languishes on the sidelines, why not?

-He's young. Since we seem to be committed to this youth movement he could be a QB to build around.

-He's mobile. Our line can't block ANYBODY, ANYWHERE, at ANYTIME. Troy Smith can move, he can make plays with his feet plus he can throw on the run.

-He's accurate. Okay, this is relative when compared to Tyler Thigpen.

-He won more games the Brodie Croyle. Yeah he's only won a single game as a starter but he even showed incredible promise in the games that he played in and lost. Here's his stat line from the four games he played in last year.

Pretty good numbers and he played in four count them FOUR consecutive games without a injury. BEAT THAT BRODIE!!

Seriously, why not Troy Smith? We won't make the playoffs. Peterson has shackled us with LJ for another couple of years (people thought I was crazy when I said let him go). Our rookies are going to take some time to develop and I don't think Herm or Carl are going anywhere anytime soon. Why not throw the dice on a guy who's done the right things to deserve a opportunity?

Troy Smith for QB '08!
