First 3 rounds draft grades for every team
Is there anything more short-sighted and ignorant than grading a draft before they've even shut off the lights at Radio City Music Hall?
Nevertheless, here's quite probably the first every-team draft grade. At least on this site. Maybe
"Once I saw that (incoming) number, I was like, ‘I’m going to be a Bengal!’ I’m excited. It’s a great feeling. I’ve never felt like this ever in my life."
-Mohamed Sanu, seeing the real Bengals number on his caller id Friday, one night after being pranked by a kid who told him he was being selected by the Bengals at the end of the first round
Obligatory early analysis of first three rounds for the AFC North
Like many of you, I wasn't happy about letting DeCastro go. Especially to the Steelers. That said, at this ridiculously early stage it looks like a phenomenal draft for AFC North teams. Lets look at each teams' picks:
It's time... my 6 round Bengals mock
Over at NFL.com there is a full 7 round mock put up yesterday afternoon by Chad Reuter. As much as I hate his choices, I do really love who he has available at the places where we pick. Below are his choices and who I'd take in that situation. See which one you like more. :)
Reuter
- 17- DE Quinten Coples, North Carolina
- 21- CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama
- 53- RB David Wilson, Virgina Tech
- 83- WR Brian Quick, Appalachian St
- 116- TE Michael Egnew, Missouri
- 156- WR Rishard Matthews, Nevada
- 166- C Michael Brewster, Ohio St
- 167- DT Kheeston Randall, Texas
- 191- LB Najee Goode, West Virginia
indesignkat
- 17- OG David DeCastro, Stanford
- 21- CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama
- 53- DT Alameda Ta'amu, Washington
- 83- RB Isaiah Pead, Cincinnati
- 116- S Markelle Martin, Oklahoma St
- 156- CB Keith Tandy, West Virginia
- 166- WR Marvin McNutt, Iowa
- 167- LB Audie Cole, North Carolina St
- 191- OT Nate Potter, Boise St
Personally I think my choices represent nearly the best of all possible scenarios for us on draft day, but every one of those selections is for a guy that is available in that spot according to Reuter's mock draft.
So what do you think? Comment away.
Can you name this RB prospect?
Cincy Jungle mock draft.. who do you want?
Hello Chiefs fans. I'm picking for you at the Cincinnati Bengals SBNation site.
I see NT as your biggest need, but Poe looked so bad at Memphis that I can't see him at all for all the flashing lights that spell out BUST. Against some of the weakest competition in the FBS he had very little production. I think NT is a spot that can be addressed in the 3rd round and you still get the best prospect available, since Poe is purely a workout warrior.
I see a lot of mocks with you taking DeCastro or Keuchly, but guards don't go that high and I see LB as the strength of your team.
I'm planning to try and trade down, maybe get both of the Bengals picks so I can get you Stephon Gilmore & Devon Still, but I wanted to see what you guys are talking about first.
Latest mock by Don Banks at SI has the Bengals taking a RB & CB
Don Banks at SI.com has released his third mock draft of 2012(new window). This edition has Luck, Griffin, and Kalil in the 123 spots, as nearly every mock does, but then it gets weird.
The Browns aren't taking TR at 4... neither are the Bucs at 5.. or the Rams at 6.. how is the second coming of Jesus in cleats getting past all these teams? Oh yeah, he's a RB and no one cares about RBs anymore.
Banks looked into his crystal ball and made a decision for the Bengals that is ridiculous. Nigh-unprecedented. As much of a long shot as Mike Brown hiring real NFL scouts... oh..
Who to take at 16?
Greetings from your friends and rivals at the Cincy Jungle!
We've been doing mock drafts and arguing about who to pick for weeks.. just like every other team's fans. One hot topic of conversation is who the Jets will take at 16. Using a variety of recent mocks I've put together a short list of possibilities. Each of these guys is available in one mock or other, but each of them are gone in one mock or another (to the Jets or prior). Given this list of guys that might fall to you, who do you take?
My nightmare draft
Could the 2012 draft & free agency period be the time for a certain Ohio football franchise to rise to glory? The beginning of a decade of dominance?
I had a scary thought while commenting on another thread. What if the Browns get RGIII with their 4th pick (possibly trading up 2 spots, as walterfootball's venerable mock currently shows, see link), and then with their second 1st round pick (remember that? at 22?) I go away from Walter's for a bit. The Chiefs have taken Devon Still, since they take a DL almost every year in the first, and the Seahawks have already re-signed Marshawn. That leaves the Bengals faithful pre-emptively high-fiving each other and making notes to buy Trent Richardson jerseys as soon as they become available, but then the Browns trade with the Jets to move up to 16 and snag Trent Richardson from our drooling maw.
Bad so far? Just wait.
Next they sign Stevie Johnson & Reggie Wayne in FA, then pick up one Anthony Collins *cry*, and suddenly they've got what could be the most dominant o-line in the league, arguably the top RB prospect since AP, and arguably the most dynamic QB prospect in ever. A guy with a cannon arm, 4.4 speed, and, wait for it.. intelligence. The league hasn't seen that before. Plus a rock solid veteran and a fiery young star to throw to.
I thought of that, then had to do laundry. Quickly.
Why didn't TO just catch it? He got up high enough, he just didn't reach out with his hands..
my wife Angi as we watched the celebrity beach bowl on DirecTV. She hardly ever watches football, yet she summed up his entire career in one comment.
PFF WR drop rates
Going by ProFootballFocus's idea of what is and isnt a catchable ball, Golden Tate has dropped 1 pass in 2 seasons. Hes not available in free agency, but Marques Colston just might be. He ranked 4th among WRs with at least 30 receptions, 1st among those with at least 65. He only dropped 2.44% of the 'catchable' balls thrown his way. Our Jerome Simpson dropped over 15%. Side note.. the highest drop rate belongs to local favorite Arrelious Benn, who dropped over 21%.
This is a TD and Gresham's wasn't? Avant drops the ball before he even hits the ground.. what the hell?!?!?!?!??!
Your viewing guide to non-Bengals non-Jets football games
We all want the Bengals to win out, obviously, but even if they do a wildcard spot isn't a sure thing. The most likely result is that the Jets claim that spot. What happens, though, if the Jets lose to the Giants or Eagles, bringing their conference and overall records even with the Bengals?
The tiebreaker that would determine who goes to the playoffs and who goes home in this scenario is called Strength of Victory. It doesn't matter how many points you won by, all that matters is who you beat. Strength of Victory is the combined W-L-T percentage of all the teams you beat this year. Currently the Jets hold an advantage over the Bengals in this regard, largely thanks to the 0-13 Colts being on our win list. In order for the Bengals to gain the edge on this tiebreaker, many games in these last three weeks will have to fall just the right way.

Your viewing guide to non-Bengals non-Jets football games We all want the Bengals to win out, obviously, but even if they do a wildcard spot isn't a sure thing. The most likely result is that the Jets claim that spot. What happens, though, if the Jets lose to Miami, bringing their conference and overall records even with the Bengals? The tiebreaker that would determine who goes to the playoffs and who goes home in this scenario is called Strength of Victory. It doesn't matter how many points you won by, all that matters is who you beat. Strength of Victory is the combined W-L-T percentage of all the teams you beat this year. Currently the Jets hold an advantage over the Bengals in this regard, largely thanks to the 0-13 Colts being on our win list. In order for the Bengals to gain the edge on this tiebreaker, many games in these last three weeks will have to fall just the right way. Below is a guide for each remaining game that matters for the Strength of Victory tiebreaker and who we want to win. Note that we don't need every single game to fall this way, but each one helps. We do have some ground to make up. Week 15: TB over DAL BUF over MIA GB over KC SEA over CHI BAL over SD (I know it's hard to root for the Thugs) Week 16: IND over HOU NE over MIA OAK over KC (root for Carson?!?) STL over PIT MIN over WAS DET over SD SEA over SF TEN over JAX (we beat them both, but the Jets only beat JAX) Week 17: STL over SF IND over JAX CLE over PIT DEN over KC OAK over SD (Carson again?!?) If every single one of those games goes the way we want, the Bengals win Strength of Victory tiebreaker. We have a little wiggle room, but not a lot. We don't actually need the Colts and Rams to each win 2 games, thankfully, but without them the margin gets dangerously thin. The one thing that surprised me as I tallied that data is that the Jets aren't our most dangerous opponent for that last wild card spot, the Titans are. Their remaining games are against the Colts, Jaguars, and then the Texans. The Texans have already locked up a playoff spot so will almost certainly be resting lots of starters, while the Colts and Jaguars are the Colts and Jaguars. That means it's very likely that the Titans go 10-6. With their superior conference record, they get the wild card spot if it comes down to a three-way tie with us and the Jets. All of that taken into consideration, I'm hoping for the Jets to lose 2. It doesn't seem all that unlikely. All of their remaining opponents have shown the ability to play with just about anyone. The dream team Eagles, the Patriot-destroying Giants, and the 'played really hard for a stretch' Dolphins. If the Jets lose 2, and the Bengals & Titans win out, it's a tiebreaker between Bengals & Titans. Since it's only 2 teams, head to head rules. We won straight up, so we're going to the playoffs.
PFF's top AFC N QB by accuracy percentage is...
drum roll please.... Andy Dalton!!
Pro Football Focus has a signature stat called "Accuracy Percentage". This is a "fixed" version of the generic completion percentage. They remove all the drops, throwaways, and spikes to trim it down to only the passes that were aimed at a receiver and not blatantly dropped by said receiver. The #1 QB in the league in this stat (like in every other ever) is Aaron Rodgers, but the top AFC North QB, and in fact top AFC QB overall, is our very own Andy Dalton. He ranks 5th in the NFL with an accuracy percentage of 72.4 and #1 in the AFC.
It doesn't show every QB, but it does rank the worst in the league, which is where you'll find another AFC North QB... Joe Flacco. The wunderkind of the Baltimore Thugs is ranked 32nd out of 36 qualifying QBs.
For the best individual game of the year, once again Aaron Rodgers is #1 thanks to his 24/25 effort against the Vikings. The 2nd most accurate game this season by any QB in the NFL came in week 6 when Andy Dalton faced off against the Indianapolis Colts and completed 25 out of 28, not counting the 4 drops, for an adjusted completion percentage of 90.63. Now you might say "Yeah, but that was the Colts..." That is true, but 8 other QBs faced the Colts including Roethlisberger, Schaub, Brees, and Ryan and none were as accurate as Dalton.
I don't know about you guys, but I say we keep him.

anyone in Miami area?
I'll be watching the Bengals from Don Shula's Steak 2 in Miami Lakes the next two Sundays. From what I hear they have a few Bengals fans there
We're going to play Pittsburgh this week, and that's what matters now, then we go to Seattle, and after that, I guess we've got a short week. But the flip side of that is, then we get a long week to prepare after that, and some rest. So I really don't concern myself with it.
According to this article Browns LT Joe Thomas is retired...?
when did this happen? "offensive tackle Joe Thomas, 26, who left the league in 2010 after five seasons with the Cleveland Browns"
"I'm most impressed with his approach to the game. He's had a professional approach. He comes out and works hard. He puts in an effort. It's not surprising he's ended up the successful player he is on the football field. His professionalism tends to get overlooked because of his (off-the-field antics), but he's absolutely a top-class worker, and certainly he understands the chemistry of a group, and he's integrated himself well within the group. The guys enjoy having him around."
Kirwan: Bengals over Pack in Super Bowl XLV
Pat Kirwan has picked the Bengals to knock off the Colts in the AFC title game then go on to beat Green Bay in the Super Bowl. nuff respect?
Give Kenny Watson a chance
Assuming he's back from injuries, I really hope the Bengals give Watson a shot to be the starter. I've seen nothing impressive from Benson. Watson's worst ever ypc average over a season is better than Benson's best ever. In 2007 when the o-line was injury depleted and just miserable all around, Watson still put up very good numbers. His entire career he's posted solid numbers, well over 4 ypc, and he's a good blocker. I don't understand why he doesn't get a shot to be the starter.
