Stampede Blue 3nd Annual Unofficial Dexter Manley NFL Idiot of the Year Poll

Well, it's playoff time, and time for you to cast your vote for what is probably the most important award you will vote on in the next five minutes: the Third Annual Dexter Manley NFL Idiot of the Year. This year, the lockout shortened preseason, the apparent final retirement of 2010 winner Brett Favre and the passing of 2009 winner Raiders Owner Al Davis made choosing the contenders more difficult. Who do you think deserves the unofficial title of Dexter Manley NFL Idiot of the Year? Oh, and if we left someone off, tell us about it.

Poll
Who is your choice for the Dexter Manley 2012 Idiot of the Year?
Rex Ryan (Head Coach, NY J-E-T-S) - For proving that bravado is better when accompanied with winning. Now get me a goddamn snack.
38 votes
Kenny Britt (WR, Tennessee Titans) - Gets caught speeding and does the natural thing: leads cops on a high speed chase ending with three drug charges.
14 votes
Terrell Owens (Unemployed) - For staging his own mid season combine and failing to get drafted and then skipping his child support hearing.
8 votes
Cincinnati Bengals (Team) - For reclaiming the coveted 'most arrests in the past 12 years by a professional sports franchise" crown from the Vikings.
2 votes
Bill Polian (GM, Indianapolis Colts) - Failing to have an NFL QB capable of playing when the NFL season opened.
39 votes
Sam Hurd (WR, da Bears) - Running drug distribution business large enough to get arrested on three different federal charges.

Stampede Blue Dear Colts Fans, Next Year, Chris Polian is the Exec of the Year

Ok. We suck this year. Unfortunately for those of you who want the Polians gone, it isn't gonna happen. Here's why:

The Colts are set up for such a rebound next year that my living room recliner could win Executive of the Year.

Many of the decisions are simply going to be made by default like Manning's health: either he can play or he is done. There's simply no room for a human being to screw the decision up...

Stampede Blue Stop Wasting A Roster Spot on Players Who Cannot Play NFL Football.

You know what really drives me crazy about the Colts? We don't have the ability to win if our starting QB can't play.

Note to Management: You can cut Painter and hire him as an special assistant to the associate assistant head coach so he can continue to carry the clipboard and review film with Manning.  Then you can bring in an actual NFL grade QB who can win games to fill Painter's  roster spot. You don't have to put non-player personnel on the roster.

Stampede Blue Finally, a Backup QB With Talent!

Well, it looks like Peyton has a backup who can do more than take a snap, and give it to the other team by any means necessary. The Indy Star is reporting that former Ball State standout Nate Davis has signed a two year deal with the Colts after languishing in the Mike Singletary doghouse for a year and a half.

Niners Nation Is 2011 a write off year?

Isn't a new coach, a change in QB and a new DC the recipe for a rebuilding year?  I'm reading a lot of speculation from other Niners Nation members that it's going to be new coach + Donovan McNabb (or your favorite free agent QB) = playoffs. That's probably not the case for several reasons, not the least which is that we have a complete system change going on on both sides of the ball.  If you take a look at the changes, well, getting to the playoffs will be a miracle:

Looking back on the whole Mike Singletary thing... it was one strange ride. Here are the top 10 strangest moments... complete with video because pictures and text can't adequately explain it.

Niners Nation Why the 49ers Should NOT Take a QB in the Draft

Now that we've changed Smiths at QB, can we please let the calls for drafting a QB die? Drafting players for positional needs in early rounds often leads to disaster for a couple of reasons:

  • If you make a positional selection, chances are you will overpay, leading future roster issues.  If you picking fourth and are filling a need for a RB and the best available RB would otherwise go at pick 28, you are going to overpay for two years.
  • If you make a positional pick, you may pass up on much better players which could have huge impact later. Take the 2006 draft, and say the 49ers needed a QB and had traded up to get Vince Young, and not taken Vernon Davis.  One of these two players is a potential HOF player.  VD clearly was a better choice.

Even worse is making a positional selection of a QB. Here's why:

Niners Nation Why Singletary WILL be Back in 2011

Something great happened for Mike Singletary's future in London:

He finally figured out that you absolutely, positively have to put the players that give you the best chance to win in the game.

Ok, sure, it took an injury to golden boy Alex Smith to show Sing the light. That light is awfully hard to see when you are in your first real year of a very tough job with very real pressure coming from management, fans and even the players on your team. Now that Singletary has been kocked off his figurative high horse, here's what he needs to do to return in 2011:

Doyel-fail

Gregg Doyel knows little nothing about NFL football. Want more proof, take a look at where he thinks the Jets played the Colts last weekend.

For Sulaiman: A Glass of Ice Water for the Jets Fan

First, you must have the best 11-7 team in the history of the NFL. It has to be true. I mean, how could you have possibly lost seven games with your impregnable offensive line, bone crushing fullback play and vaunted rushing attack that could not be stopped with an armored brigade? It’s simply… unpossible to think. It pains any true football fan to even think that Miami, Jacksonville and the lowly Falcons would dare defecate in your sun-dried tomato bisque soup and dirty your teams record. Oh, and the lowly Colts defense… the one that stepped aside from day one and only permitted the Colts to win 15 games… surely there is no hope. The Colts should as well just skip the game so you can wear the AFC champion jersey you purchased from your team’s pro shop (which is secretly run by the staff of love-psychic.com) on Monday. It’s clear that your gargantuan, lumbering offensive line will wipe them from the field without breaking the slightest of sweat. After seeing what you did to the Bengals (clearly a juggernaut at 10-5 when the J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! played them), I suspect that the Colts starters and coaching staff have figured out the best move is to simply rest our starters in preparation for a Superbowl campaign next season. Why risk severe injuries like bruised egos, hurt feelings or gasp having a Jets player soil a Colts uniform? Why not just put a team of tackling dummies out there – since there’s little that Freeny and Mathis could do that a tackling dummy could not do. Third, Crackback has been polluting StampedeBlue with his special brand of wit, impeccable air of dignity and unique and unerringly myopic perception where somehow the Colts are no longer playing the 11-7 J-E-T-S but facing the Greek and Roman pantheon. It’s clear that hubris is not in as short of supply as logic, common sense and basic decency. Fortunately, Freeny and Mathis will sack Zeus while Manning, Wayne and Clark rob the temple. Prediction: 42-10 C-O-L-T-S COLTS! COLTS! COLTS!

Stampede Blue Dexter Manley NFL Idiot of the Year

Well, it's getting towards the end of the season and it's time to cast your vote for an award that matters. This year's award shows the NFL may not have arrived to a state a parity with the Oakland Raiders dominating the field.  Helping the Raiders further is the fact that the NFL has not had a bumper crop of off-field shenanigans (lgt Vikings Sex Boat Scandal) as in years past.  Vote early, vote often.

My apologies for leaving Jim Zorn off the list for the worst play call in decades...

Poll
Your vote for idiot of the year:
Bill Belichick - For decision to go for it on 4th and 2 against the Colts resulting in turning the ball over on downs.
22 votes
Tom Cable - Punching assistant coach, allegedly abusing two women and allowing Jamarcus Russel to take the field.
41 votes
Brady Quinn - Attempting to take out Terrell Suggs with a below the knees hit.
3 votes
Rex Ryan - Motivating team and providing motivation to opponents by claiming to be a threat to win the Super Bowl.
10 votes
Michael McCaskey - Trading Kyle Orton for Jay Cutler in a bid to improve the Bears proving 1-1 does not equal 2.
7 votes
Charles Rogers - Passing out at an On the Border restaurant where no one noticed until 3:15 in the morning.
8 votes
Jamarcus Russel - Season achievement.
37 votes
Al Davis - Lifetime Achievement.

Stampede Blue Why the Colts Win and Other Teams Do Not

There is a reason the Colts are a great, great football team.  We have a few superstars, and a team full of players that likely wouldn't even start on many other teams.  If you want to know the secret, it's easy.  Listen to players talk on other teams. It's not about the team, it's about them. It's the Albert Haynesworths, Terrell Owens, Chad Ochocincos and others who see the game as being about themselves.

Now listen to Peyton Manning who grinned and bared it when ordered to sit out in last week's Jets game:

"We support decisions made and we follow orders" -- Peyton Manning when asked about the decision to pull starter in last week's loss to the Jets.

That's a very powerful statement.  And one that is telling that the Colts have a 100% grasp on an old leadership maxim:

To be a great leader you must first be a great follower.

Manning's statement is a refreshing change from the me-first culture that dominates professional sports (if you think the NFL is bad, look at the NBA).  Would Terrell Owens or Bret Favre have supported management on a decision like this?  No.  Why does it matter? Ever notice how when a member of team goes down, the backup performs nearly as well (with the exception of the Jets game where the entire team was replaced by crash test dummies)?  This year we've not had 2007's defensive player of the year, we've been without our pro-bowl defensive ends, our starting running back has been out and we've even lost our hall of fame coach.  But the winning continues.

At the end of the day, Manning's greatest contribution to the Colts may not have been his arm or gaudy stats.  It may have been something a lot less tangible. Leadership.  My hat is off to the entire Colts team, including the ownership and executive team.

Stampede Blue My Only Question for Polian

I get it.  It's more important to have the whole team ready for the playoffs than to risk ending our chances of a championship because of an accident on a play that does not matter.  But the decision to pull Manning and other key players exposed the Colts ultimate weakness, and raises a question I would like to ask the Grand Poobah himself:

Why is the second string so poorly prepared to play NFL football?

What we saw from Painter and company was unacceptable for professional football at any level.  It also exposes a weakness: what happens if we lose key players? What if an opponent decides to maximize their opportunity to win and takes out Manning?  It looks almost like the second string simply isn't prepared to go in the game.

I never thought I would ever wish to see Jim Sorgi under center in the playoffs, but that is preferable to watching Curtis Painter channel Jamarcus Russel.
