NBA Draft: Bruin Impact

From ESPN. Chad Ford's current mock draft has Jrue Holliday at number 4 to the Sac Kings

Analysis: Holiday's performance at the NBA pre-draft combine suddenly doesn't make this pick such a stretch. Yes, this is very high for Holiday, but at the end of the day, there just isn't a big difference between the fourth pick and the 10th pick in this draft.

The Kings need a point guard, and if they can't get their hands on Rubio, Holiday's combination of size and defensive ability should get him the nod in Sacramento. The other possibilities here -- including Brandon Jennings, Jonny Flynn and Curry -- don't really fit the team's need. But it looks as if another player, Memphis guard Tyreke Evans, will get a look, too.

Other places like NBAdraft.net has Holliday going 24th to the Failblazers. There is no concensus here, but if he looks at places like ESPN then he's most likely gone (as was thought before). Personally, I'd love to get him back so we have a go-to guy next year since we don't really as Andy Katz has pointed out:

Cal and Washington are the clear favorites, while Oregon State and Oregon have enough back to mount a challenge for No. 3. UCLA doesn't have a star but has underclassmen whom most teams in the league would covet.

The above linke article also explains how pU$C is f'd next year (as in might be last in Pac10).

But back to the draft...The other top picks have an imapct on another Bruin. The draft order is 1)Clippers 2)Grizzlies 3)Thunder 4)Kings. Blake Griffin is the obvious #1, but many believe the next best player is point guard Rick Rubio. The Grizzlies are unlikely to take him with 2 because they have a couple point guards already: Mike Conley and Mayo. Untill a few days ago, several drafts had him at 2 anyway. Now several sites predict UConn's Hasheem Thabeet. And trading down seems unlikely

The best option for the Grizzlies is to find a team hot for Rubio and get a couple of great assets for the pick. The problem with that plan is that teams don't seem willing to give up the farm for Rubio. Lots of teams like him, but not enough to make a blockbuster deal.

That moves Rubio down to pick number 3...the Thunder (and I'm not talking about the LA weather). This is a problem because our beloved Russle Westbrook has become their starting point guard, and a great one at that. If drafted Rubio might not overtake him, but the franchise is struggling and might try something crazy like start Rubio to attract attention.

Many on the team see Russell Westbrook as their point guard of the future and aren't sure how he'd fare without the ball in his hands.

All I want is Westbrook to thrive and be the star that we all know he is. Hopefully the Thunder will pass on him too, like NBADraft.net has projected. They have fellow Pac 10er James Harden going to the Thunder.

This same draft also has Darren Collison going to washington with the second pick in the second round (32 overall).

Go Bruins!

On Saturday, UCLA had just as much sucess on offense than usc did.

The only touchdown came from a quarterback who isn't even in the hunt for the job.

Brandon Carswell Scores Only TD In USC's First Football Scrimmage
He hauls in 43-yarder from Garrett Green.

Link

First the transfers-

according to UCLA website:

Kevin Craft - 8-18 for 93 yards, 3 interceptions, 14-yard rushing touchdown, 3-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Everett

while according to usc website:

Sophomore Mitch Mustain, who sat out last season after transferring from Arkansas, was 9-of-13 for 94 yards, but was intercepted in the end zone by freshman cornerback Brian Baucham on the last play of the scrimmage.

And the Redshirt Freshmen-

UCLA website:

Chris Forcier - 7-13 for 71 yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 interception

vs usc:

Redshirt freshman Aaron Corp completed 6-of-13 passes for 60 yards and also ran for 26 yards on 7 carries, but he lost a fumbled snap in the red zone (senior linebacker Brian Cushing recovered it).

THEN the runningbacks

UCLA's leading rusher was:

Johnathan Franklin - 7 for 32 yards

only 3 out of the 7 usc rushers used gained positive yardage led by:

Sophomore tailback C.J. Gable ran for 27 yards on 4 carries

UCLA had the superior offense. Looks like usc will have some trouble with Virginia and Ohio State at the start.

MAJOR BURN!!!!!!!!!!!

Some funny "articles" I found.

"Hopefully it sends a message to kids across the country that education is more important than money," Miller said. "Getting a college scholarship is more important than winning an American Music Award, and I plan to be the best student-athlete I can be at USC."

Another top notch NCAA investigation:

Wooden busted for giving Werther's Original to recruit

Some pretty funny stuff. Try to come up with other ones like it.

This Just in from LATIMES

"DeMar DeRozan, one of the nation's most highly sought high school players, signed with USC in November, but his father and older half-brother said Tuesday he might consider other schools if the Trojans sustain a quick and heavy penalty."

Then get this...

"We're just trying to see how things play out. He doesn't want to leave home because his mother is still sick" -- she suffers from lupus -- "and isn't getting any better."

"Compton High Coach Tony Thomas said he recently had been contacted by assistant coaches from two of the Final Four teams -- which were UCLA, North Carolina, Kansas and Memphis -- inquiring about DeRozan's availability."

Although probably unlikely, UCLA could get him.

Hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahah. Let the fallout continue.

On Campus Stadium

Sure the Rose Bowl is historic and great, but what is one thing that would be even greater that any bruin would want...an on campus stadium.

I recently realized a mostly forgoten place where said stadium would fit. While many people think that there is no room for such a stadium on UCLA's campus, I disagree. You just have to stretch your mind far enough...across the 405. A while ago I came upon this fact from the "uclahistoryproject" website that got me thinking.

"1949-Federal government transfers 34 acres of Veteran's Administration property to UCLA, bringing total campus acreage to 419."
http://www.uclahistoryproject.ucla.edu/Timeline/Home.asp

Why not on the VA, especially since we own it. Jackie Robinson stadium is there and what better to complement it than an exclusively Bruin football stadium.

Sure parking would be a problem and traffic would stink, but traffic stinks everywhere else. Imagine tailgating on bruinwalk before a game, rubbing the Bruin statue's nose en rout to the game, and a state of the art stadium (which might help out with recruiting).

I bring this up because we all are die hard bruins who want the best...and because it seems that people of higher power might read this website and roll with the idea. Also people with connections to the athletic department should formally bring up the idea. I know this would take a long time, but ideally (and unrealistcally) it would be complete around the same time as the pauley pavilion renovations in 2010.

The biggest problem is of course the money, but the ball must start rolling sometime and if the idea gets out there I'm sure some company would sponser a stadium for one of the worlds most well known universities.

Saturday afternoons would forever change for the better.

Go Bruins!!!
