Mile High Report Elway's First Season Game by Game

After watching the game yesterday, I heard the phrase wildly inaccurate, and incompetent. That got me thinking about Elway's first season game by game. We have this poor misconception that every QB has to be just like Elway (Unfortunately we only think about the skilled polished post 1993 version of Elway). I guess if you look at Elway's progression in his first season based on the stats would you really say that Tebow's first few games are all that different than Elway's?

Mile High Report Oakland will score 40+ points on us this Sunday

I just listened to Dudsville dodge one question after another about when Tebow will start.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpmIBJ_MKas&feature=player_detailpage

This team is beat before they step out on the field . There is no leadership from the top down! Tebow may not be the greatest QB in the league yet but he does lead. It does not matter what the outcome is this guy is a leader. Attitude reflects leadership and I do not believe that Orton is a leader. You can say flowery words but if you cannot back it up on the field your done!

Tebow can deliver the trash talk such as "the black hole doesn't scare me" Now let him lead and back it up!

http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/2010/12/13/tebow-black-hole-doesnt-scare-me/6129/

If Orton is a leader he will do what is best for the team, step down , let Tebow start!

Mile High Report Josh McD choose to loose this game!

Who in there right mind decides to punt on 4th and 4 on their own 25 with less than 3 minutes left in the game. The broncos only had 2 time time outs left and they had to know that KC was not looking to score, but rather get a first down, This is not a complex issue, you punt the ball and you concede defeat because you have to know that KC was going to that if you lost the possession that the game will statistically be over. Why on earth would you punt the ball with less than 3 minutes in the game.

Mile High Report 3-4 or 4-3

I watched the game today and I noticed that our defense use the 4-3 formation a lot. This makes sense to me. We have struggled to find the perfect guys who fit the 3-4 scheme and we have had some games where we have showed flashed of brilliance, but there are many more instances where the Defense lost use the game (last years 2-8 stretch and I could think of a few this year as well. There are advantages that the 4-3 defense present that I do not believe the the 3-4 defense offers  such as:

1) the 4-3 defense plugs up the middle making it harder to run against.

2) there seems to be pressure on the offensive line and QB

3) I do not think that we have the right people to make a 3-4 defense dominate.

What are your thoughts?

Mile High Report How to fix our running game?

I have read several articles that are so wonderful to point out that Denver has a problem, we cannot run the ball.

(Bill Williamson is a dick!)

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/18178/answer-to-broncos-ground-woes-is-in-cleveland

None of these articles however address how we fix this problem. It is so easy to go through the past and point out the mistakes and obvious injuries, but in reality, what we got is what we have to work with. So just for fun, how do we fix the problem and restore balance to the force!

Mile High Report Isaiah's Deep Indy Thoughts!

What this loss to Indy tells is

1) Denver can really throw the ball, Kyle Orton seems to find the open man often. However as great as this sounds this creates a couple of problems. Denver seems to be on dimensional, with no running attack Denver can throw the ball all they want but when they get to down to the red zone they are going to run out of room to throw the ball and it become real easy to stop us, no matter if we go for it on 4 down. You can tell that the teams we play do not respect our run, they know about as well as we do that we cannot run that ball and with no balance on our offense they are going to play the pass nearly every down, thus making it harder for us to pass the ball.

2) We are our greatest obstacle. WE can move that ball, but if we continue to let dumb mistakes, penalties, fumbles, and interceptions happen we do not have to get beat by the opposing team, we will do it quite well without their help.

3) Our Defense can hold their own. We did pretty well pressuring Manning, and for the most part Cox did okay. You can tell that this kid has a lot to learn but at the same time he is really talented. The run defense was solid and perhaps even dominant.

4) There is nothing special about our special teams. They are killing us! Cox had that stupid fumble which is unacceptable especially against Indy. We need more consistent production from our special teams or they will continue to be one of our greatest liabilities throughout this season.

5) This team can play with the big boys and we can hold our own. We may not have won today, but if we would have played better we could have. We lost this game because we beat our selves. This team has the potential to win every game.

Now if we could just fix that stupid run game of ours this season would be a lot easier!

Mile High Report ESPN's 3 Things needed to win

Denver Broncos: Three things

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/16684/denver-three-things

By Bill Williamson Three things Denver needs to work on this week in preparation for Sunday’s opener at Jacksonville:

Dominant in the passing game: The best thing Denver has going for it going into the season is quarterback Kyle Orton. He had an outstanding preseason and he has a nice rhythm going with his receivers. With the Denver running game banged up and uncertain headed into the Jaguars game, the Broncos will have to win in the air.

Contain the run: The Broncos had the No. 3 pass defense in the NFL last season. But their run defense struggled down the stretch. The Jaguars can run the ball pretty well with Maurice Jones-Drew. He had 1,391 yards on the ground last season. He can wear defenses down. Denver’s front seven, starting with nose tackle Jamal Williams, must set the tone and not allow Jones-Drew to dictate the game on the ground.

Prepare for the heat: Sunday’s forecast in Jacksonville is 90 degrees and cloudy. The Broncos have struggled historically in Florida in the early season. The humidity can beat down teams. The Broncos must be mentally prepared for unpleasant conditions.

I agree with Bill (Now that is a first) But I think that our run game will be there as our stable of backs appear to be in game shape.

This should give us a real idea of what the identity of the 2010 Denver Broncos will look like. I really do not believe that the preseason told us much about the game plan or philosophy of our offense or defense.

Any thoughts?

Mile High Report Ryan Harris

Okay so I went camping and missed the last preseason game vs Minnesota, I heard that Ryan Harris hurt his ankle/leg in the game. Do we have an update as to how long he is out? I have read so many reported ranging from a hang nail to woo is me! I heard that they pick up some lame duck in the waiver wire today to at to the back up role of Harris while his is out. But seriously what is the status of Ryan Harris?

Mile High Report Our Kickers are AWESOME!

Between Prater (who is amazing at field goals) and Colquitt, (who seems to have a monster leg while punting) our special teams could end up being a strength for once. It seems highly unlikely that anyone will return a kickoff for a touch down when Prater kicks (everyone seems to be in the endzone or through the endzone.

Mile High Report Kyle Orton is the MAN!

YOu know with all the attention that the other two QB's are getting, Orton is quietly dominating. This is great no matter how you look at it, McD has stressed competition at every position, however by all accounts that i have read the QB position mey not be that much of a competition, at least right now.  This may cause a problem next year, a good problem every coach would love to have, what do you do with a QB that has excelled in your system. Think Matt Cassel everybody!

The Denver Post has a great article regard Orton's dominance this training camp

Mile High Report Power of positive thinking!

Well, so far training camp has not been what we would have hoped it would be but there are a lot of positives that the Broncos still have.

1) Jarvis Moss is not a write off -  all the reports say that he is playing better and should contribute this year

2) Robert Ayres - Is entering his second season and he was pretty good last year.

When you consider that we have a revamped Front Seven the loss of Doom should not hurt that much! Plus when you consider all the tool on offense, this team will still be exciting to watch.

- The O-line will fall into place there is plenty of depth there

- RB should be fun to watch

- An who does not have high hopes for the QB and WR's

In all seriousness, I have notice that 2 things happen when stars cannot play, either players step up and play beyond expectations or they fail to make an impact. This is where leadership comes into play. One of my favorite Quotes of all time is "Attitude Reflects Leadership". This is why players like Dawkins are on this team, I personally think that player will step up because the team is counting on them to fill the void, and there is enough pieces in place to create great players (from the coaching staff to the leadership on the field this team has great depth!

Mile High Report Jamll Williams

This is what the Denver Post wrote on Jamll Williams

When the Broncos signed Jamal Williams to be the nose tackle in their 3-4 defense, they were making a big move to put a big man in the middle.

But Williams still is recovering from an arm injury that kept him out of all but one game last season, or another injury, or the Broncos want him to improve his fitness. The team likely will not have him on the field to start two-a-days.

Veterans report Saturday and will be on the field for their first practice Sunday morning, but Williams has been designated physically unable to perform (PUP) by the team this week. Players are designated as PUP in training camp when they cannot participate fully in practice when camp opens.

They can be removed from the PUP list at any time

and return to the field. They can participate in conditioning and weight-training sessions with the team's strength and conditioning coaches.

It was somewhat of a surprise move for the Broncos given that Williams declared himself so healthy just a few weeks ago "that my body feels like I'm back in college."

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels didn't specify why Williams will be held out.

"Whether it's conditioning, injuries, physical, that whole thing, it's a combination of all those things — the PUP designation," McDaniels said. "Hopefully it won't be a long-term thing, but it's a combination of a lot of those things. We're just going to make sure we're smart, and hopefully we'll have him out there as soon as he can. It's a lot of things."

Mile High Report Harvey Unga

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/14446/does-unga-fit-in-the-afc-west

ESPN reported - This year’s NFL supplemental draft has an interesting prospect in Brigham Young running back Harvey Unga.

He is a power back who had great college production. Unga, 6-foot, 230 pounds, compiled 3,455 yards and had 36 rushing touchdowns in three seasons at BYU. Known for his ability to break tackles, Unga is also sure-handed out of the backfield.

Any team that wants Unga will have to surrender a 2011 draft pick. He will likely go in the middle rounds. The draft will be held July 15. Here is a look at whether he’d fit in the AFC West.

Denver: The Broncos’ have a full backfield, but they are missing a true power back. Denver was interested in power backs Toby Gerhart and Montario Hardesty in the April draft, but the team didn’t take either player. I’m sure Denver will consider Unga.

Considering it would not take much to get the guy, he is worth a shot! What do you think?

With all this talk of Tim Tebow and how much the MSM hates the kid, they sure do give him a lot of air time. Mile High Report Perrish Cox, CB, Oklahoma St.

2010 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report: person Perrish Cox, CB, Oklahoma St. Perrish Cox is much more than a cornerback, but his ability to be a shutdown corner has him moving quickly up most draft boards. In limited action on defense as a freshman in 2006, Cox managed to tally 24 tackles and intercept two passes. In 2007 he started eight games and increased his tackle total to 42 and again picked off two passes. The numbers in 2008 were pretty much the same. In 2009, Cox has become more of an impact player on defense, ranking fourth on the team in tackles and intercepting four passes through ten games.

While Cox is a serviceable corner who can be a nickel or dime back in the NFL, it is his ability to return kicks and punts that make him worth a second or third round selection. Even as a freshman Cox was one of the best returners in the nation and ran one kick-off back for a touchdown. In 2007 he returned one kick-off and one punt for scores and he scored twice on kick-offs in 2008, amassing a total of 895 return yards on kick-offs. He has yet to return a kick or punt for a touchdown yet in 2009, but he continues to be a dangerous kick returner.

Since Cox is emerging as a decent corner, he should be gone by the end of the third round. Heading into the 2009 campaign there were some questions about his defensive skills, but those have mostly been answered. 2/15 Update: Cox failed to separate himself from other corners during the Senior Bowl, but he finished his senior season strong and definitely did not hurt his draft status during the Senior Bowl. That leaves Cox as a probable third rounder with the potential to move up to the second round if things go well during individual workouts.

Mile High Report Linebackers ...

I wonder if McD wants linebacker core to look anything like this

ROLB - Ayers

LOLB - Moss

RILB - Dumervil

LILB - Williams

With the fact that they did not draft any linebackers that means that they have to work with what they got and It is interesting to me that they would cut Davis, yet leave Moss on the Roster. I have a gut feeling that tells me that this guy is not a write-off yet.

Any thoughts?

Mile High Report Orton won’t be resigned

Tom Brandstater’s is going to the practice squad, you can take that to the bank! Orton won’t be resigned at the end of the season, he will want too much money and there is not enough value.

For a QB who give's you consistent production, but nothing spectacular or game changing, I do not think that the Broncos are going to invest any amount of significant money in a QB who cannot change the game. The Marshall ordeal showed me that money can trump talent. In a game where finances play a big role in the way a team designed  and who actually makes the team ... My money says that this is Orton's last season!

Mile High Report Kenny McKinley

Just some food for thought!

Wikipedia has this on the guy

"As a true freshman in 2005, he worked his way into the starting lineup at wide receiver and also handled the punt return duties. He started six games and ranked third on the team with 25 catches for 291 yards and returned 18 punts for 83 yards.

During his sophomore year in 2006, McKinley started all 13 games and recorded 51 receptions and 880 yards. That ranked second on the team behind another soon-to-be NFL player Sidney Rice. His best game was an eight-catch, 110-yard effort against Auburn, the first 100-yard receiving day in his career.

Before the start of McKinley's junior year in 2007Sidney Rice decided to forego the remainder of his college eligibility to enter the 2007 NFL Draft. This made McKinley's the Gamecocks' top returning wide receiver in 2007.

He would go on to earn first-team honors from: the SEC coaches (All-SEC), the Associated Press and CollegeFootballNews.com. He was second-team All-SEC by Rivals.com and honorable mention All-America honors from CollegeFootballNews.com.

Despite playing with turf toe most of the year, as the Gamecocks' #1 receiver, McKinley not only led the team but led the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in receptions (a school-record 77), receptions per game (6.42) and in receiving yards per game (80.7). He also was number one at South Carolina in yards (968) and touchdowns (9). He had four 100-yard receiving games in 2007, including a school record 14 catch performance against Tennessee where he had a career-best 151 yards.

In 2008, McKinley entered his senior year as an All-America candidate that was in position to break every South Carolina school career receiving records. He began the 2008 campaign ranked tied for fourth in career receptions (153), sixth in career receiving yards (2,139) and tied for sixth in receiving touchdowns (15) in Carolina history. Despite being out of the lineup for a three-game stretch due to a righthamstring strain, he set school career records for receptions and receiving yards, while also closing out his career second on the school's all-time touchdown catches list. McKinley also placed his name in the SEC) record books. His 207 receptions placed third in conference annals, becoming just the fifth SEC player to amass more than 200 catches in a career. He also became the 12th player in league history to record more than 2,700 receiving yards (2,781).

His head coach Steve Spurrier has called him the best receiver he has ever coached."

So as far as I can tell the guy did not get much if any real playing time and as I recall he was suppose to be there to support the team in the case of a Brandon Marshall trade.  So is the MSM and pretty much most of the people who post on this site ready to give up on the guy?

From what I gather McD spent much of last season building up BMarsh's trade value (21 catches in one game) while we did not hear much else from the rest of the squad. So are we to read that there is no value in the receiver's currently on the broncos roster.

Mile High Report JaMarcus Russell weighs 290lbs!

Maybe this is why the Raiders are pursuing Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell recently weighed in at 290 pounds. That’s a good weight for a tackle, but a very bad weight for a quarterback.

There was a previous report that Russell weighed 271 pounds. However, the fact that Oakland coach Tom Cable was reluctant to talk about Russell’s weight-loss progress at the NFL owners meetings this week, likely means Russell never weighed in at 271 pounds.

It was disclosed this week the Raiders are in hot pursuit of McNabb. Oakland wouldn’t be trying to acquire McNabb if it thought Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, was doing all the right things to reclaim his starting job.

I maintain that Russell’s biggest problem is his poor football fundamentals, but weighing 290 pounds is not doing Russell any favors.
