Computer Wizard Ken Pomeroy has Georgetown at #48
16-11 with a 9-9 Big East conference record? Not too bad. Lots of question marks with the team but good to know that Pomeroy is confident that Savannah State will be a pushover.
(h/t to CourtsideHoya for dutifully monitoring the internet)
Georgetown to face North Carolina in secret scrimmage
Well, Jeff Goodman comes through with an exhaustive list of "secret scrimmages." To paraphrase Inigo Montoya, "I do not think secret means what you think it means."
Nothing cynical about this one - that's a hell of a warmup before the season starts and should really give us an idea of how good Georgetown can/will be.
**DOCUMENT YOUR CASUAL** FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2011
What is Casual eating for lunch today? HOW ABOUT A NICE HEAPING BOWL OF HURRICANE IRENE? Casual is back in New York to enjoy some tropical fury so he's left amateur hour bloggers in charge of today's idiotic lunch documentation. But how about some documentation of Casual himself. Ah, the 1990s. What an awful time for this nation.

Moses Ayegba likely out for the season
Dammit. Didn't even seem to be hobbling that badly yesterday. And now the Hoya Nation injury watch turns its eyes to Tyler Adams.
UConn's Kemba Walker Reads His First Book
You really can't make this stuff up - 1 book and he'll complete his degree via an "internship" with the NBA team that drafts him?
From Ron Thompson's twitter: #Hoya News: Chris Wright has been cleared to play. 1st 'full' practice will be Mon. Good for Ncaa Tourney.
Cynical is behind us. Delusional is next. Tarik's tweet makes everyone's Saturday better.
The Streak Is Over: Kemba Walker Leads UConn to a Win Over Georgetown
After a streak of 8 impressive wins, it took a dominant second half performance by Kemba Walker to stop the Hoyas momentum. The opening plays of the game looked promising with Chris Wright knocking down a 3 on Georgetown's first play and Kemba Walker forcing up a terrible brick on UConn's opening possession. From there, Georgetown generally controlled the first half with Wright driving and kicking out and Julian Vaughn dominating the post.
Unfortunately, the one point cushion wasn't enough, particularly as Walker showed that he's one of the toughest matchups in the country. And while he deserves almost all the credit, he got major help from Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, who tossed in 23 points off the bench. Going into the game, we all knew Walker would get his but when there's someone to play second fiddle, UConn is a really tough team to beat.
Austin Freeman Scores 21 as Notre Dame Beats Georgetown 69-55
Well, it had to happen sometime and there's little to be pleased with in tonight's game. Austin Freeman played a solid game as the rest of the team struggled to get quality shots off, let alone connect.
As painful as it is to say, Notre Dame played an outstanding game, forcing the Hoya Trinity (eat it, JGD) into their worst game of the season with Chris Wright, Jason Clark, and Austin Freeman combining for 34 points. . . Of which, Freeman had 21. We've wondered when this Georgetown team would go cold and it happened tonight in spades - with the team shooting only 18% from 3 point range and a measly 55% from the free throw line.

Fran Fraschilla says Georgetown is an Elite Team
Story requires Insider:
What I like about the Hoyas: Efficient offensive philosophy
What I don't like about the Hoyas: Unproven frontcourt
Georgetown is in the same category as Duke, Kansas, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Pitt. And ahead of the likes of Cuse, Kentucky, Baylor, Nova, Michigan State, Illinois, K State, San Diego State, and UConn.
Austin Freeman is the second best offensive player in the country
For all math/statistics geeks, today is a big day as Ken Pomeroy released his player ratings. A few interesting tidbits:
- With an Offensive Rating of 140.4, Freeman is just behind Derrick Williams and just ahead of Kemba Walker (link here though it seems that Mr. Pomeroy is as clueless about working spreadsheets as the rest of us)
- Chris Wright has the 33rd best Assist Rate in the country
- Julian Vaughn has the 17th best Offensive Rebounding Percentage and Block Percentage
Georgetown cracks top 10 in ESPN Power Rankings
Fresh off the Mizzou victory, ESPN has Georgetown 8 overall. Only 2 Big East teams are ahead: Pitt at #3 and UConn at #7. The latter might be cooling off as a 7 point victory over New Hampshire isn't quite the dismantling of Kentucky.
Science - KenPom predicts Georgetown's Record
And so it begins, RushTheCourt.net ranks Georgetown at 18 (and in only 140 characters!) and now math wizard predicts that Georgetown will go 20-8.
On the bright side, Ken has the Hoyas beating Old Dominion but last year his numbers had the Hoyas beating the Monarchs and we all now how that turned out.
The economy takes its toll on Hoop Club Schwag
In fairness to Alleva, I snapped this photo before I found the window decal buried in the bag but no magnet and no wallet schedule? Guess that on campus arena won't be built anytime soon.
Bingo Broadus - Take the Money and Run
I can think of plenty of bloggers who would take the identical buyout. Broadus damn sure makes out better than did Todd Bozeman, who got hit with a show cause before finally landing at Morgan State and turning them into a MEAC power.
The Pete Thamel haters will be hopping all over this one but here's hoping that Broadus - a proven recruiter and coach - gets his act together and gets back in the game.
Kevin Broadus - INNOCENT
Does it indicate that the NCAA is wildly inept or that Bingo was actually doing things the right way? Guess we'll never know but there were no major infractions during Broadus's time at Binghamton.
The CasualHoya position on Broadus started with unbounded love but also spawned what at the time seemed a foolishly homer-ish post questioning Pete Thamel. Maybe Thamel really is a scumbag muckraker.
Somewhere in Europe, BearcatSaxa is smiling.
Mikael Hopkins Picks Georgetown over Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Kansas, Miami, Texas and West Virginia
Plenty of chatter about Mikael Hopkins committing but this makes it somewhat legit. Put aside the fact that David Cox is listed as the main recruiter and bask in the glory. Even crazier, Hopkins was scheduled to visit Miami this weekend (it's 50 degrees in DC today).
Georgetown lands another Top 100 local recruit and silences the Casualties for at least another year week.
CapitolHoops.com Mikael Hopkins Basketball Highlights (2011 Top 50 Recruit) (via captiolhoopscom)
Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha big man Mikael Hopkins has made his pick. He'll be a Georgetown Hoya per sources close to the recruitment.
Eric Bossi (@ebosshoops). If true, this is a major coup - landing another DeMatha player will quiet even the most vicious Casualties.
Entertaining way to waste 15 minutes - Number 1 won't be a shock but Georgetown's top dunk sails in at #15. Odd that AI only made honorable mention

More Ink for Dominique Jones
Following USF's win over Georgetown in the regular season, we referenced the Bulls' tattoo in our award post. Jones lit Georgetown up and taunted the crowd but his new tattoo easily joins the most comical in the NBA. Unclear whether the photo was taken in a mirror or the tattoo was intentionally inverted.
Hoya Hair: Yes, Hoya Hair!
In case the countless requests to DOCUMENT YOUR LUNCH aren't enough to let you in on the secret, the dog days of summer are officially upon us and your intrepid editors are desperately seeking new and entertaining ways to make the day pass.
It doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that our ultimate haircut belongs to none other than Pauly D and we enjoyed learning that Vinny and Ron Ron had to go to a "hood barber" for a proper cut. This begs the question - what's it take to find a good barber and what's been the best/most entertaining hair in Hoya Land?

Campaign Season Not So Kind To Former Hoya Kevin Millen
Ranging from the painfully awful Real Housewives of DC to the boring Top Chef: DC, almost everything in this city comes back to politics. And Georgetown basketball is no exception to this rule as it has had plenty of exposure to the political beast. From Big John and Patrick hanging with Ronald Reagan, Zo interning on the Hill, or Obama cheering on the Hoyas, politics and Georgetown go together like peas and carrots.
Therefore, you can't fault Kevin Millen for trying to cash in on the trend, as the former Hoya seamlessly combined Georgetown basketball with politics as he valiantly fought for the every man, woman and child in an attempt to win a House seat outside Memphis (note emphasis on certain adjectives). Apparently his career average of 2.3 points per game left him with such an affinity for DC that he wanted to move back for another shot. I'm no political strategist but I find this strange considering how he already has one felony in the District. Maybe he'd be able to play with the Legends at Kenner!

Mark Tillmon and Chris Wright running Kenner
The Post had an entertaining story this morning about a group of DC basketball legends teaming up to play with Chris Wright on the Legends team in this year's Kenner League. In years past, my least favorite part of Kenner has been watching a group of 6'3 guys with whose hoop dreams had clearly passed them by still out there chasing the dream (Note: I'm still chasing my dreams in such hyper competitive leagues as the JCC 3-on-3 league).
Well, this year, Tillmon and Sherman Douglas are out there playing and dropping knowledge on Chris Wright. Not sure when the Cuse statute of limitations on hatred ends but I'll vote for it being a good thing that Wright hears pointers from the one-time NCAA career assist leader.
Little question that my favorite quote was Tillmon stating that his gray hairs are just "a birthmark"
Jay Bilas Impressed With Chris Wright At LeBron Camp
Although Jeff Green's Dad ranked it as only the fifth most compelling story of this Georgetown off-season, we have an early glimpse from Jay Bilas (insider password required) as to whether Chris Wright is ready to lead.
And it's good news:
Chris Wright, Georgetown: Strong, compact and a good athlete, Wright would have been better served if he could have played the point exclusively in games, but there were others that spent more time handling the ball. He is a good shooter but did not knock down shots all week the way he is capable. He is a good defender on the ball but needs to be more vocal on the floor and take over in certain situations. An exceptional kid, Wright was a terrific teammate throughout the camp.
LordNick On The Brink?
In what can only be attributed to karma, intrepid Georgetown blogger (and avid soccer hater), LordNick, took a nice slip and fall down a flight of stairs while in New York. Unfortunately Miraculously, he survived the fall and even has the picture to prove it:

Gone Too Soon II: A Tribute To Taylor King
In what has become an alarming trend, lefty white shooters are leaving Big East schools at horrifying rates. Everyone remembers the incomparable Nikita Mescheriakov - someone with absolutely no basketball ability who was forced to transfer to Wake Forest.
Now comes news that Taylor King is leaving Villanova. This was a McDonald's All-American who committed to UCLA and played a year at Duke before heading to the Mainline. WHAT COULD HAVE GONE SO TRAGICALLY WRONG TO FORCE THIS YOUNG MAN OUT?
New CasualHoya Contest! Most Ridiculous Georgetown Memorabilia
In just under 2 hours, Steven Strasburg will surely pitch the third perfect game of this young season thus rejuvenating DC professional sports, serving as a launching pad to a Hall of Fame career, paving the way for an undefeated Redskins season and a scandal-free Arenas summer.
Due to the overwhelming response to our pleas to take headbands on the road with you, we now ask for new documentation - this time the most absurdly out of place Georgetown memorabilia your camera phone can find.

Chad Ford on Greg Monroe's Utah Workout
Not much of an article really but ESPN's draft guru, Chad Ford (subscription required), confirms that Monroe has made nice with the folks in the Beehive State.
The incomparable David Falk is limiting Monroe's workouts to those a DeMarcus Cousins or Derrick Favors and that likely ensures that Greg will win the interview portion of the pageant. Remains to be seen, of course, how he'll do in the spelling bee. How many articles do we need to read to know that Monroe is the most talented passer in the draft and has a high basketball IQ?

In less than shocking news, Louisiville coaches are cheaters
It'll be tough to top Pitino's off court antics last year but Assistant Steve Masiello is willing to give that one a shot. The details are still sketchy and, not surprisingly, all the actors have clammed up but Masiello is tied to a Kentucky Derby ticket scam.
One has to wonder why they wouldn't have just taken Casual's expert handicapping advice and made more money than they could ever spend. The editorial staff is making it rain all night long.
Oh and in other Kentucky cheating news, Rod Strickland "asked" to assume an administrative role up in Lexington because all the travel was simply too much for him.
I can only think of two good things that have ever come from Kentucky: 1 and 2.
The Truth Behind Jim Calhoun's "Leave of Absence"
Last week's news about Jim Calhoun's new 5-year extension to remain the coach at UConn didn't shock anyone and basically means that Jim Calhoun gets to keep his job for as long as he wants it. What's fair is fair and the man did bring two national championships to a women's hoops school. Of course, earning those rings required the services of countless legends ranging from players stealing laptops to coaches who raise hell over kid's summer camps.

Calhoun teaching the fundamentals of boxing out
There's no secret that we here at Casual Hoya don't respect the man who famously wouldn't give a dime of his contract back, but it's interesting nonetheless to learn that the recruitment for the incoming class was done with the usual style and grace that we've come to expect from Calhoun and the Huskies.
