Lakers Nab Texas A&M's Elonu In 2nd Round

The reigning World Champion Los Angeles Lakers selected Texas A&M Center Chinemelu Elonu with their only pick in the draft.

Going into yesterday's draft, two teams who had shown the most interest in Elonu, the Lakers and the Houston Rockets. I am glad Elonu is going to get a chance to live out his dream of playing in the NBA. I hope he shows them enough to make their roster this next season.

Elonu, barring injury, projected as a 1st round pick after next season, but after already earning his degree, it is diificult to tell a kid to not pursue his dream.

Also, teams can pay 2nd round guys whatever they want, because there is no guarantee. So if Elonu impresses early, he could potentially make more money than some first round picks, if he signs an incentive-laden contract. First round picks, while signing a guaranteed contract, are also capped on how much they can earn.

Gig 'em Big Chin!!

Here is what I think Elonu will look like in his new Laker uniform.

Who Had A Better Year: A&M or texas?

I got to thinking last night (scary) as I watched the final outs of the College World Series, who had a better year overall, A&M or texas? Robert Cessna writes an article about this exact question.

ESPN showed multiple videos during the CWS of Augie Garrido and the texas players, saying that at texas, "National Championships are expected, nothing less is to be accepted." They gave off a very "2nd place is first loser" vibe. After all, the national runner-up trophy props open their bathroom door in Austin (find that hard to believe).

So I am interested in what the people in Austin think of the national championship totals from this past year:

Aggies - 3

Horns - 0

texas may have finished better in the sports everyone cares about, but by their own admission, national championships are the expectation.

I don't know that A&M has Austin shaking in their boots, but they have undoubtedly have their attention now.

The Aggies take on Oregon State at 2pm on Friday at TCU's Lupton Stadium.

lets Maroon Out Lupton!

This is from the TCU press release:

Tickets will initially be sold as All-Session reserved seat packages only. This package includes tickets to each game with a maximum of seven (7) possible games.

All-Session prices are $60 for adults and $30 for youth. This is a substantial savings as single game reserved tickets---if available after expected high demand for All-Sessions---will not be sold until the first game and will be $20 for adults and $10 for youth per game. All seats in Lupton Stadium will be sold as reserved seats, no General Admission. Once all reserved seats are sold, Standing Room Only will be available on the Grass Hill down the first base line. These SRO tickets will only be sold after all reserved seats have been sold, and they will be $15 each.

Tickets for the general public will go on sale Tuesday morning. Call 817-257-FROG to purchase your tickets

Due to the top notch blogging here at I Am The 12th Man.com, texas coach Mack Brown has said that this "mistake" will be corrected, according to the DMN

Basically, they got caught trying to pull a fast one.

Bless you, 24-hour news cycle.

Can you imagine if any other school did this after they won a Big XII Championship? They would claim "male anatomy" envy and never let the other fanbase live it down.

I understand holding up signs and wearing t-shirts that say "45-35" or whatever, but this has been cleared by people within the athletic department, including Mack Brown.

I hope some recruit calls them out on this. Pathetic.

McGee Impresses At East-West Shrine Game

From all accounts, Stephen McGee was impressive all week in the practices leading up to the East-West Shrine Game.

McGee, who missed most of his last season at Texas A&M with a sprained shoulder, threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jarett Dillard with 14:07 left in the game. Dillard finished his career at nearby Rice with an NCAA record 60 touchdown receptions. He dropped a pass from McGee on the 2-point conversion try.

McGee points to the heavens after a TD vs. Baylor

We all wish Stephen the best as he attempts to make the leap to the next level.

(cue the violin)
My first memory of SM was his first on campus. After graduating from Burnet HS early, McGee came on to campus with a maturity that is rarely seen in a 18-year old. Then after the 2005 texas game, my hopes for A&M football were at an all-time high. It is unfornuate the way things worked out for Stephen, but there was no one more respected in the A&M locker room this season, and that says a lot about a graduating senior who lost his job due to injury and a RS Soph that performed well in his absence.

Lastly, Jovorskie Lane was not impressive-

But West fullback Jorvorskie Lane, who set a Texas A&M record with 49 career rushing touchdowns, was stopped three times inside the 5-yard line and the East took over at its own 1.

We all hope Jovorskie gets his crap together, so he can perform at the next level. In one of my electives at A&M, I sat at a table with Jovorskie, Yemi Babaloa and Kerry Franks (I know, I know bragging), but they were all extremely personable guys. It will be very disappointing if none of those guys pan out. (Franks is definitely an exception, he never had the expectations of Yemi or the J-Train).

I found this a very peculiar place for him to transfer for both sides-

For Mr. Vizza: There is no indication that he would step in front of any the QBs we have on campus already. Frankly, four people would need to be injured before Vizza would see the field at A&M.

For Texas A&M: We just brought in a walk-on transfer from SMU, Winston Gamso, so why waste a scholarship against the 85? Something does not add up to me. I guess we will all just have to see how it plays out.

With Vizza transferring, expect to see Riley Dodge as the starting quarterback of the Mean Green next season.

Anyways, Welcome to Aggieland, Mr Vizza, enjoy your stay.

Bowles goes up for the swat against Texas State

Bowles' defection, while not a key contributor, will hurt the Aggies in Big XII play. He was good for some clean-up minutes or giving the guys with a more prominent role a breather.

This does clear room should the Aggies decide to add a player for next year, but that seems unlikely.

We all wish Denzel the best, he seemed like a good guy.

Turgeon Asks Students to Come Back Early, Rewards Them

Put this in the "Will have no effect on the court" file, but I thought it was cool.

Mark Turgeon sent out an e-mail/blog/press release/whatever last week encouraging students to come back from Christmas break a little early and help the Aggies beat Baylor and OU.

Well, tip of the cap to Turgeon. After the victory over Baylor last night, Turgeon sent the players into the stands for the playing of the War Hymn. I thought this was an extremely cool gesture by Coach Turge.

courtesy of TexAgs.com

I know it may not see like that big of a deal, but it really makes the students feel special. Thanks for the gesture.

The last time I remember this happening was in the 2005 season after the blowout victory of Bobby Knight and Texas Tech.

Can anyone remember a time more recent?
