So, last weekend "Nashaa," the UCLA Hindi Film Dance Team won first place at Bollywood Berkeley (www.bollywoodberkeley.com), one of the largest dance competitions in the nation. That means that on April 7th they'll be going to Chicago to compete for the title of "Best of the Best" (Best among all Bhangra, Raas, and Hindi Film Dance Teams nationally).

Second, if I heard right during the Cal game, our UCLA spirit squad dance team won first place at a national competition.

And lastly, The Juggler (Chris Smith), is currently finishing a film production that won the bronze medal at the Park City Film Music Festival. You should all check out the website for his film, "Shadow in the Trees" at www.shadowinthetreesmovie.com
Read the Plot and Background! This guy is a truly admirable person. It is good to be among so many respectable, upstanding Bruins.

GO BRUINS! GO BRUINS! GO BRUINS! GO BRUINS!
Open Practice Today

So, today they let students in to watch the B-ball team practice, and let me just say this much: our team is frickin' amazing. Aside from Mata and Wright (who were sitting out) every returning player has shown noticeable improvement.

Collison is frickin' QUICK, and he pretty much single-handedly led his (gold) team to a 12 point comeback in the last 3 minutes of the scrimmage. Afflalo and Shipp are frickin' BEASTS (I think Afflalo added some muscle).

Roll is more accurate than I've ever seen him (He knocked down most of his threes, and also two layups), and the Cameroon crazies are still, well... crazy. But probably the biggest standouts were Keefe and Dragovic. Dragovic was dropping threes like NOTHING. That guy has SERIOUS range. In fact I would not be surprised at all if he ended up being our leading scorer.

Keefe didn't score as much but had a very Howlandish presence. He fits perfectly into Howland's system, and you can definitely tell. Also, they had Mustafa playing alongside Collison for awhile, and those guys clicked VERY well. I wonder if Howland may be thinking of putting those two in together against some slow teams..

All in all, I am ridiculously pumped for this season. These guys are PHYSICAL (Afflalo got hit by a swinging arm to the face and Abboya got sent to the ground at one point by a flying Luc), and they can SCORE. I cannot express exactly how kickass this team is.

Oh, and one more thing which I thought is really cool: one of our defending-national-champion volleyball players has walked on to the basketball team. He looks like he's actually going to get some minutes, too! Does anyone know if there has ever been an athlete to get a National Championship in two different college sports? That's definitely something to look into; more bragging rights for UCLA!

So, what is the most effective way to pressure and encourage coaching changes?? How do we put pressure on the administration? I know nothing about the guys who decide who's to be hired or fired...
I think we need to set up some demands and make them be heard. I'm willing to do my part.

UCLA pride

I've always been a supporter of pure and true school spirit. I love UCLA and support all BRUINS whether they are our amazing women's water polo players or our not-so-appreciated-this-year offensive line. Additionally, I think that there is sooo much more to all of this than just a win or a loss. My buddy Derrick Williams is one of our running backs. Now, when he goes onto the field, he isn't as succesful as Markey. However, I still frickin' scream my lungs out for him. That's what friends are for, right? Well, I feel the same way about everything which encompasses UCLA. Thus, through good or bad choices, I am going to support KD and all that he does for our team while he is here. Win or Lose, I am going to continue supporting our team and being proud of them. Good or bad performance, I am still going to appreciate the good, acknowledge but forgive the bad, and look forward to next game with confidence and faith. That's what true dedication to something means to me. It's easy to fly a banner during a winning season.. but it's only hard to fly a banner during a losing season if your pride is dependent upon your record. Call me an ignorant optimist.. but I don't feel like I can call myself true blue unless my love for everything Bruin is unconditional. GO BRUINS!!!

ESPN's Hot 100 List

It still bugs me that Ben Olson didn't even make it on ESPN's hot 100 list. I guess he'll just have to climb to the top the hard way...
It seems like ESPN sportswriters just make random statements, and explain why they were right or wrong. Who cares if they're always wrong; they can explain why! (Look how quickly and drastically their opinion of Cal changed)
Also, I cannot wait for the Ben Olson-Brady Quinn throw-off. Notre Dame scrapes by with a 14-10 win, and it's a beautiful thing somehow. Notre Dame is still the most amazing team on earth, and Brady Quinn showed just how gutsy he can be after a shitty performance, thereby ensuring 14,000 more cover pages and pointless stories. If we don't jump onto the polls this week, I will have completely given up on ESPN.
My vision, come Oct. 21st: Southpaw Jesus walks onto the field and glares at "Touchdown Jesus" for a good minutes or two, then smirks and begins a thorough stomping of the overrated Irish.
