Field Gulls Football strategy book recommendations?

Does anyone have a recommendation for one or more football strategy books?  I'm looking for something appropriate for someone who reads John Morgan religiously and watches lots of games but otherwise does not have much football knowledge.  Ideally, the book or books I'm looking for would compare/contrast different modern offensive and defensive formations, personnel packages, etc. and perhaps provide some historical perspective on their development.

I've decided it's time to increase my football nerdiness.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Field Gulls DJ?

Last I heard about Hackett, he wasn't getting much interest in free agency.  Is that just a natural progression with the upper-tier WRs (Stallworth et al.) being cleared off the boards before teams looking for help get to Hacks?  I guess I'm just being optimistic that maybe he's overvalued himself and the Hawks can end up with him for a reasonable price after all.  We need som WR help.

Field Gulls Interesting News Trib Article Re Hutch

The question, essentially: would the team be better off if it had thrown lots of dough at Hutch, rather than spending on Julian Peterson, Burly, etc?

I'm pasting the URL for the story below.  Dunno if it'll link or not, as I'm not savvy about such things.

Field Gulls Playoff scenarios

Does anyone have a good rundown of the Seahawks playoff opponent scenarios?  I guess it'll be the Skins or the Vikings.  Presumably, if one of those two teams wins and the other loses, the Hawks play the winner.  What if both win or both lose?

I looked on NFL.com, thinking they might have something.  Didn't find it.

Also, any thoughts on who we'd rather play?  Portis and Peterson/Taylor/Hutch all scare me a bit.  The quarterbacks?  Not so much.

Field Gulls Which former Hawk would you want?

The post about old-school Seahawks unis made me think about the following question: which one former Seahawk would you choose to sub onto this team, replacing the current starter for the remainder of this season?  Assume the former Hawk would have the ability he had at his prime for the team.

Hutch?  Would allow Sims to move to RG and Gray to do something else.

Tez?  Brilliant, but not really a position of weakness for the current Hawks.

Easley?  Brilliant and a position of weakness for Hawks.

Sinclair?  Don't know that he's a marked improvement over either Tapp or Kerney.

Boswo...  Nevermind.

Says something either about the talent level of the current team or the poor talent of prior Seahawks teams that I cannot think of many others I'd even consider.

Field Gulls Yelling at ESPN

Am I the only one who yelled at the TV last night, urging ESPN to stop talking to Drew Carey or Steve Young and just please show the game?  I know it was a blowout, but still.  ESPN's format is infuriating.  If I wanted interviews, I'd watch Charlie Rose.  Actually, I wouldn't, but I'd watch some different interview show.

Field Gulls Two football questions

Unrelated, but I've been wondering about both:

  1. Who is Mike Holmgren talking to, er, screaming at on his headset?  It's my understanding that he sends the play in to Beck that way.  One can see MH holding the play card to his face when he is apparently doing that.  But then after a play screws up, see, e.g., all third-and-fourth-and-longs this season, he appears to continue to communicate with someone via the headset.  Is that Beck, or someone upstairs?  I understand this may not be knowable to mere citizens such as us.
  2. What is the purpose of the little elbow bands that football players wear all the time these days?  You know, the thin thingies that encircle the arm just above the elbow?  Seems like they are not well-positioned or designed to protect the elbows from turf burn, etc.  Yet many, many players wear them.  What's the deal?
