Pinstripe Alley Numbers

More on the use of numbers in baseball. I believe that numbers can tell us how a player performed in a certain situation in the past and how likely that player will suceed this time.

But, as Joe Torre told Cashman, baseball is a game of emotion and people. Numbers don't mean diddley when a pitcher walks a batter to pitch to Melky and he hits a homer.

The Yankees have players that look great on paper. But they don't play with that fire and emotion. I know they are trying. Trying their best. But so far their best hasn't been good enough.

A-Rod will add numbers to te line up. But how many of his homers will come in clutch situations? How many will come during a blowout? Yogi didn't have the numbers that A-Rod has. But who would you rather have at bat in a clutch situation? Those that say A-Rod never say Yogi play.

Anyway, numbers are ok. But the game still has to be played and the winning team has to score more runs than the loser. The final score is what matters.

Pinstripe Alley Tough

Reading the News and Post this morning someting occurred to me. I haven't thouht about it before. I talk a lot about chemistry and guts. But, the truth is, the Yankees aren't tough. I'm talking about mental toughness. The ability to focus in key situations and deliver clutch hits and clutch pitching. We just don't have it. We'll hit  a lot of home runs. We'll pitch some good games. We'll win some close ones. But when we really need it we don't deliver. Giradi down plays the RISP statistic. We hit good, we were in position to win. Well, what does being in the position to win get you. Nothing! If you don't win it doesn't it mean beans. As the old sayng goes - "it's the scoreboard baby". That's what counts at the end of the game. Final score.

Pinstripe Alley Bad Night, Bad News and Game Wasted

Sure Mo blew it. But he can't be perfect. I love his attitude when he blows it. It happened. We'll get them the next time. Move on to the next game. When he has a bad game people are going to start the downhill conversation. Mo is the best and will be the MVP (or close to it) for the Yankees this year.

The real concern for me is Bruney's injury. If he's out for a long time it could mean real trouble. Robertson can pitch. But  we don't have another proven set up guy. I still think that Joba's makeup is better suited for the bullpen. Let Hughes, Kennedy and some of the younger guys take a shot at starting.

Hopefully Wang can get his arm to where it is supposed t be and he'll be his usual self. Meanwhile, it's a long season. You're gonna lose some that you should have won. Just don't let it happen to often.

Get um today. Go Yanks!!

Pinstripe Alley TEAM

I've been a Yankee fan for as long as I care to remember (50 + years). I remember McDougal, Carey, Coleman, Gordan, Bauer, Woodling and so on. I've seen a lot of teams that I have liked and some that I didn't like so much. I don't know about you but I really like this current Yankee team. They are developing really good chemistry. I just hope A-Rod can fit in.

I like the combination of Damon, Gardner, Swish and Melky. You've got power, speed and four guys that will do what ever it takes to win. Watch out!

Is it my imagination or isJeter driving the ball really well in the early season?

I know the debate is over, but, I really think that Joba's make-up is better suited for the bull pen.

I hated to see Robertson sent down. He can really help in late innings.

I live in Georgia and don't get to see the Yankees as much as I would like. But I still live and die by the daily scores.

GO YANKS!!!

Pinstripe Alley Posada

Did anyone read Mike Vaccaro's column in the NY Post this morning? If you haven't, check it out. Marino is, well, he is Marino. Jeter is the captain and the face of the Yankees. But Posada is the heart, soul and guts of the Yankees. I love Andy Pettite. He's a warrior. A-Rod is going to put up the numbers. But Posada is the MVP on this team. He can handle pitchers. He hits. He moves runners up. Good defense and he can throw! Add in his fire and leadership and you've got a Yankee. Not just for now, but for all time. I wish I was going to be in New York for the home opener to join in the standing ovation that he will get and that he deserves.

Pinstripe Alley Disagree/Agree

I beg to differ, I believe Girardi needs a fast start to build some confidence with the brass, fans and team. I feel for the guy. But he wanted te job. They gave him the team and if they stumble out of the gate - So Long Joe.

I agree with you about Swisher. Before the season is over he will be valuable to the Yankees. He will hit. He will also provide some leadership in the locker room. I really like Nady, but I believe I would have gone with Nick.

Pinstripe Alley No Surprise

I watched the game yesterday and was deeply disappointed. But not discouraged. It's April and it's one game. Sure we want to win them all. But we wont. I'm still not convinced that Girardi is the man for the job but give him a chance.

There were some positives. Jeter played well. I thought Damon looked good. Coke didn't look bad. He deserved better. Gardner looked like he belonged, despite what Joe Morgan says.

I can't wait until tomorrow.
