Cat Scratch Reader Short in 2013

The day is April 25, 2013. I'm writing this to you from the future, from this day, to inform you of what lies ahead (because I know a lot of ya'll can't wait!).

The Panthers have the nineteenth selection in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Cats need a DT, WR, and S.

When it comes to their selection, the Panthers choose Kawann Short, DT from Purdue.

(And no, it is not to early to start thinking about the 2013 NFL draft. Matter of fact, I can't wait.)

Cat Scratch Reader JKP's Two Round Mock Draft

Howdy CSR!

Despite being painfully away for so long, my interest in the draft hasn't waned. And from what I can see, ya'lls hasn't either! Not one bit! Like ya'll I can't wait for this draft, and hope that it ends up thoroughly better than last year (besides SuperCam, IMO no one provided an impact or looks like a keeper).

Anywho, here's my idea of how the NFL draft could shake up. I'm sure that there will be a lot of trades, however trying to predict them is nearly impossible. I think you'll find that this draft isn't like most. I don't like to subscribe to the convention. My modus operandi is to think outside the box. So, I've tried to be a little creative here. And let's face it, the real NFL draft typically ends up little like the conventional mock draft that is advertised by elites. After the 4th or 5th pick or so, things just get wacky.

Enjoy!

Round 1

1. Indianapolis (2-14) – Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

99.9% lock. Just like Cam was last year in the few days leading up to the draft.

2. Washington (5-11) – Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

Washington traded to #2 because obviously they wanted to be in position to grab one of the two elite QBs that is left after the first pick.

3. Minnesota (3-13) – Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Ponder may well be the guy, but they’ve got to get someone to keep him upright. The rumors are that they are convinced he’s a Pro Bowler or that they want to trade out. I can’t imagine the latter. If they trade out, they better get a hefty sum, because they aren’t getting a better deal than Kalil. They are truly lucky he’s here at 3.

4. Cleveland (4-12) – Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St.

No, they aren’t taking Trent Richardson. Recent draft history has shown that RBs are devalued in the draft. Plus, Cleveland doesn’t HAVE to get Richardson here. They can wait and get Doug Martin in the 2nd. Or trade for Jonathan Stewart with their other 1st round pick. There are many options for them in terms of RB. And getting another elite CB helps them very little. Furthermore, Holmgren has stated that he is comfortable with McCoy as the starter for now. He’s decent, and they can get a QB with a better value later. I don’t think they’ll take Tannehill here.

Recently, Cleveland has stated that they are settled on their pick. They’ve also stated that they desperately need someone to provide some excitement and put up some points. And prior to that, the report out of Cleveland was that they were ‘torn’ between Blackmon and Tannehill. So, I think all signs point to Blackmon. Plus, he already looks good in orange, so its easy for the FO to envision him in a Browns uni.

McCoy really isn’t that bad, Cleveland just desperately needs an X. They’ve got a solid core besides that with Little, Massaquoi, and Cribbs. But they don’t have a primary X deep threat. Blackmon can be that in their system.

5. Tampa Bay (4-12) – Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

Now if I were a GM, I wouldn’t take Kuechly in the top 10. History has shown that you can get a good MLB in the late 1st/2nd round (Jon Beason, Paul Posluzny, Barrett Ruud). I simply don’t value MLB this high. However, Kuechly is the best MLB that we’ve seen in a long long time. And, hey, if Rolando McClain can go in the top 10, I believe Kuechly stands a chance!

Tampa Bay’s biggest need is to stop the run. Last year, they had THE worst defense against the run in the entire NFL. If the Bucs want to win the NFC South, they are going to have to stop Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, Michael Turner, Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams, and Mike Tolbert. That’s a heavy load! Also, like Cleveland they pass on T-Rich because they can get a RB later. After Tampa picks, there are a lot of teams that have a hole at MLB and would love to plug Kuechly in. James beat me to it, but I see Tampa taking Kuechly here.

6. St. Louis (2-14) – Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

Many hype St Louis’ biggest need as OT. However, the team believes that Roger Saffold and Jason Smith are adequate and can do the job when healthy. Their biggest offensive need is truly WR, but they can pick up one later in a relatively deep draft for WR.

However, last year the Rams took DE Robert Quinn to get a fearsome pass rush. And Fisher LOVES his linemen, especially on the defensive side. I see Cox in a Rams uniform.

7. Jacksonville (5-11) – Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

Jacksonville has shown a lot of interest in Melvin Ingram prior to the draft. Some say it is smokescreen and subterfuge. However, I think Jacksonville has made it obvious over the past few years that they place a high priority on finding a terrorizing edge rusher. So, I have the big cats taking Ingram, who is a rare find, and should go in the top 10 and ahead of Coples when the time comes.

Could it be Gilmore that the Jags scouts have been eyeing at South Carolina practices? Sure. And I realize that they are prone to reaching. But the Jags love those DEs and value them more than anything.

8. Miami (6-10)– David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

Do they like Tannehill? I believe so. Their O-Coordinator, Mike Sherman coached him at Texas A&M. However, Tannehill is not a top ten player. Additionally I don’t think the need for QB in the draft overall is as great as last year, nor do I think it will push Tannehill into the top ten, a la Christian Ponder. Plus, Matt Moore wasn’t terrible last year, and the Dolphins think he might be even better under the WCO.

This is a typical Miami pick. A safe, first round pick spent on a lineman. Ever since Ted Griffin, I think Miami has been a bit reluctant to take chances. Plus, O-line is truly a need. Talk to Miami fans, and they’ll tell you that they need RG and RT badly. Some will even go as far to say that QB hasn’t been the problem, it’s been the O-line. So, they take DeCastro here, who’s actually a decent value.

9. Carolina (6-10) – Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Carolina’s dreams come true when they see Morris Claiborne still available. This is an easy pick for them. Besides guard (where Carolina has next to nothing in terms of starters in its cupboard), cover corner is Carolina’s biggest need by far.

Claiborne drops out of the top 5 because of over-hype. He is good, but Champ Bailey is a bit of an exaggeration. Rather, I’d put him in the same circle as Joe Haden (although not a burner, a very smooth cover corner). I also think Claiborne drops a little because the teams ahead of Carolina have bigger needs than CB. Anywho, a tremendous fit for Caolina.

10. Buffalo (6-10) – Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

The Bills just had Matt Kalil in for a visit. However, unless they plan on giving up a lot to move up, they have little-to-no chance in acquiring him. The fact is that after trading away Jason Peters, they’ve got a HUGE hole at LT. The Kalil visit simply confirms that. Demetrius Bell was terrible. Ryan Fitzpatrick would welcome Riley Reiff with open arms.

11. Kansas City (7-9) – Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Cassel has taken the Chiefs to the playoffs, and the team believes enough in him to give him another go. But they must keep him upright. Martin and his run blocking skills would be a good fit for KC.

Martin, Reiff, and Kalil are the only 3 OTs in this draft that could go in and play LT. Martin and Reiff won’t last long. Guys who can play LT don’t last long in the draft, especially when there is so few of them available.

12. Seattle (7-9)– Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

Seattle really doesn’t have many gaping holes on its roster. The Seahawk D is pretty solid throughout. Their O-line, when healthy is very good. And they’ve got some offensive skill players (Marshawn Lynch, Zach Miller, Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin) to work with. The one missing piece that Seattle needs to go to the Super Bowl is a QB.

Yes, I know that they now have Matt Flynn. But the Seahawks have shown a lot of interest in Tannehill regardless. And, let’s be honest, Flynn isn’t a sure fire Pro Bowler. They take Tannehill to develop, partly because they have that luxury. In reality, I believe that it is actually a very good fit, because I believe that Tannehill is a lot alike former Seahawk Matt Hasselbeck.

13. Arizona (8-8) – Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama

The Cards would really love Martin or Reiff, however there is a high demand for guys who can play LT in this draft, and they are gone. They could take Mike Adams, who is wonderfully gifted and has the tools to potentially play LT, but is just highly inconsistent. Adams also looks too much like the scuttled Levi Brown for their comfort, so they pass on him.

Sam Acho was a nice surprise and has worked out well at OLB. However, Haggans isn’t doing much across from him. Adding a pass rushing threat like Upshaw could really take their D to another level. I’m sure that they’d take Ingram if he’s here, but that is unlikely. Minus a few unimportant inches in height, Upshaw is a great player.

14. Dallas (8-8) – Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

It is no secret that Dallas desperately needs corner help.

15. Philadelphia (8-8) – Mark Barron, S, Alabama

Iggles need a starting safety, and are apparently pretty high on Barron.

16. New York Jets (8-8) –Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

The Jets D is fine. Their D is managing enough pressure somehow. On the other hand, their offense is doing diddly-squat. They could take Floyd here, but they need a RB more than a WR. Richardson is also an incredible value here.

Shonn Greene has taken major steps backwards and now looks only like a goal line back. LaDanian is just too old now. Rexy would be thrilled to welcome Richardson into their ground n’ pound. Sanchez would be as well because it would mean he would have to throw less and do less overall.

17. Cincinnati - from Oakland (8-8) – Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

Personally, I don’t like Janoris Jenkins in the first round, and I don’t think he’ll go there because he’s just too much of a risk with his background. However, he’s probably the most talented man cover corner in the draft. One scout labeled him as ‘sticky’ and I can’t think of a better way to describe him. Cincy really needs a stud corner after losing Joseph last year.

18. San Diego (8-8) – Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

Although the Bolts have some defensive needs, they need a WR. And who better to replace V-Jax than Michael Floyd, who really resembles him. However, it will get very confusing with both Michael and Maclcolm Floyd on the field.

19. Chicago (8-8) – Cordy Glenn, OT/OG, Georgia

The Bears offensive line is simply a mess. Roberto Garza is decent, however they have little around him. Hopefully, a healthy Chris Williams and Gabe Carimi will improve their line. However, they still need help. Glenn is a very talented guy that can man either G or T, which is perfect for Chicago’s unsettled line.

20. Tennessee (9-7) – Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina The Titans have more needs than they can really fill. They need a G, C, WR, DE, DT, S, CB, MLB. So, they pretty much need an entire team. They can thus take whoever is the best value here, because it will likely fill a need. So, the Titans luck out as Coples takes a tumble. There are a lot of concerns following Coples regarding his play, however few doubt his body and skills. Coples would be very welcome where Derrick Morgan and Jason Jones have done rather little. The best part here is that Coples still gets to wear powder blue!

21. Cincinnati* (9-7) – Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Now that they have a CB, they really need to add pieces to their offense, and they need to start up front. Peter Konz is also a player that the Bengals are reportedly very high on.

22. Cleveland - from Atlanta* (10-6) – Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois

Mercilus recently visited Cleveland, who needs a bookend opposite Sheard.

23. Detroit* (10-6) – Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

The Lions need to reinforce their CB corps to take their D to the next level. Enter the athletic though unpolished Gilmore.

24. Pittsburgh* (12-4) – Mike Adams, OT, Ohio St.

Pittsburgh is prone to taking a combination of the best player available and their needs. Adams is a great value here and a HUGE need at OT. They took Cameron Heyward last year, and I’m sure Heyward gave Adams a glowing recommendation to the Steelers brass as he faced him constantly in practice.

25. Denver* (8-8) – Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford

After landing mega-star Peyton Manning, they’ve got to help him out. The Broncos have Decker and Thomas at WR, but nothing at TE even though they drafted like 3 last year.

26. Houston* (10-6) – Dont’a Hightower, LB, Alabama

Although Houston could use someone across from Andre Johnson, their offense needs very little tweaking. They could take someone like Stephen Hill here, but that is a HUGE risk. Hill is very raw, and there is no guarantee that he reaches his enormous potential

A major hole that Houston needs to fill is at LB. They’ve traded away Pro Bowler DeMeco Ryans for pennies, and lost Mario Williams to the spendthrift Bills. The Texans take Hightower to replace those two.

27. New England - from New Orleans* (13-3) – Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

Vince Wilfork is aging, and Poe is actually quite similar in build and skills.

28. Green Bay* (15-1) – Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

Kentwan Balmer,…excuse me, Michael Brockers tumbles far down the list, however Green Bay picks him up because they have sorely missed Cullen Jenkins. This is not only a great value, but the best fit for Brockers that I can imagine.

29. Baltimore* (12-4) – Kevin Zeitler, ,OG, Wisconsin

The Ravens lost Ben Grubbs, however they pick up a very good replacement in Zeitler, who is shooting up draft boards and likely will sneak into the first round. A perfect fit for this power running team.

30. San Francisco* (13-3) – Amini Silatolu, OG, Midwestern State

Chilo Rachal was terrible last season and had to be replaced. The Niners need a guard, and feel comfortable taking one from a non-Division I school.

31. New England* (13-3) – Shea McClellin, LB/DE Boise St.

The Patriots must find a pass rusher, and one that can play both 34 and 43 schemes.

32. New York Giants* (9-7) – Zach Brown, LB, North Carolina

Typical NYG. They simply go BPA. Brown is an incredible athlete and produced last year. A good fit for their D.

Round 2

1. St. Louis (2-14) – Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson

Again, Jeff Fisher places top priority on the boys in the trenches. Here they take Thompson, who fills a void at NT. Pair him with Fletcher Cox at UT, and Robert Quinn and Chris Long and you’ve suddenly got one of the most potent D-lines.

2. Indianapolis (2-14) - Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Gotta get Neckbeard some help. Enter the ultimate boom-or-bust prospect of this draft. If Indy hits on Alshon, they’ll have a WR among the likes of Andre or Calvin Johnson. If they miss on him, then they’ll have Dwayne Jarrett. In the case of the latter, Jeffery will literally be pumping gas like Lane Kiffin told him. However, he is a great value here, and has an enormous upside.

3. Minnesota (3-13) – Devon Still, DT, Penn St.

The Viking line is aging and literally falling apart. Still is a wonderful value here and fills that need.

4. Tampa Bay (4-12) – Doug Martin, RB, Boise St.

For Tampa in this draft, its all about the run game. They’ve fixed their run defense by taking Kuechly earlier. However, they are a very weak running team. Legarrette Blount was a nice surprise, but is inconsistent and may not be the answer. They take the best all-around back in the draft not named Richardson.

5. Cleveland (4-12) – Brandon Weeden, QB, Oklahoma St.

Cleveland is following the Bengals strategy of last year. Get the highly touted X-WR first, then add a seasoned and underrated passer in the second. Only for them, they now have a QB and WR who worked together before.

6. Jacksonville’s (5-11) – Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

The big cats need to give Gabbert a real chance to succeed, and this means providing him with weapons. The Jags are also thrilled to have a guy that they would’ve taken with the 7th pick if Ingram wasn’t there. Now, Wright is the very best X-WR in this draft. However, there is too much risk with him in the first. He’s very weak, hasn’t faced much press-man, and will likely struggle against it. However, Jacksonville couldn’t care here, they’ll take the risk.

7. St. Louis (2-14) via Washington (5-11) – Kelechi Osemele, OG, Iowa State

Again, Jeff Fisher likes to have dominant lines. Success for him starts upfront The Rams have a help wanted sign at LG. They take Osemele, who is very talented, but can’t work on the outside at the next level.

8. Carolina (6-10) – Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan St.

Carolina gets pretty darn lucky AGAIN. Jerel Worthy is worthy of a first round selection. He is very explosive and strong. His ceiling is also very high. However, he is very inconsistent. He also can lose control of his gap at times. And he is very raw. He also gets lost in the mix of the deeeep DT class of this year.

Carolina has had a lot of contact with Worthy before the draft, and would be thrilled to see him here. It is possible that he could start immediately at the UT/3 Tech being that Terrell McClain was a bust. If he works out, Carolina could be looking at the next Albert Haynesworth (in terms of ability).

They could look at Stephen Hill here, but he is too much of a project, and won’t have the immediate impact that the Panthers have made clear that they want. Additionally, Ron Rivera is very adamant about improving his defense. With this pick, Claiborne, and some guys returning from injury, Ronnie is going to have an entirely different look to his defense.

9. Buffalo (6-10) – Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska

In switching to the 43, the Bills are short on LBs. I personally do not rank him this high. His size is an issue, as is his softer play. Like Mychal Kendricks, he might have to convert to Safety. The Bills however need an OLB, and David could be a good WLB.

10. Miami (6-10) – Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona St.

Miami takes Osweiler here, an emormously talented and emormous QB. He has very little experience, but a huge upside. The Dolphins have had him in for a visit earlier this month, and he could be target if the Dolphins miss on Tannehill.

11. Seattle (7-9) – Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

The Hawks want an OLB that is a pass rushing threat. Lewis is a good fit and a stud.

12. Kansas City (7-9) – Alameda Ta’amu, NT, Washington

Kelly Gregg is aging and declining. Ta’amu, who I have rated very highly would be a nice fit.

13. Dallas (8-8) – Jared Crick, DT/DE, Nebraska

Crick, who should’ve been a 1st rounder if not for a pec injury, is a great value to Dallas who needs to upgrade their 34 front and their pass rush.

14. Philadelphia (8-8) – Zebrie Sanders, OT, FSU

The Iggles lost Peters to injury and now have a giant hole at OT. Enter Sanders.

15. New York Jets (8-8) – Vinny Curry, OLB, Marshall

The Jets are ecstatic that they’ve landed a premier outside rusher. They already know that he looks good in green. They select Curry.

16. New England - from Oakland (8-8) – Reuben Randle, WR, LSU

Besides Wright, Randle is the second best pure X WR. He is very talented, but raw and risky. Would be a nice fit in NE, who is desperately looking for someone else other than Welker.

17. San Diego (8-8) – Nick Perry, DE, USC

Perry isn’t going in the first round. Maybe not to the same extent, but he’ll fall like Everson Griffen did.

18. Chicago (8-8) – Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech

Da Bears need a lot of things on defense. CB is one. Besides the aging Tillman, there is little. Hello Hosley.

19. Philadelphia - from Arizona (8-8)- Mychal Kendricks, LB, California

The Iggles have traded for DeMeco Ryans, however they could use some help on the outside. Kendricks may be small, but packs a big punch.

20. Tennessee (9-7) – Brandon Washington, OT/OG, Miami

Chris Johnson has no holes to run through, and that is partly because the pool at OG is thin.

21. Cincinnati* (9-7) – David Wilson, RB Virginia Tech

Without Cedric Benson, they’ve got to take Wilson here.

22. Detroit* (10-6) – Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

Who knows if Mikel Leshoure will make it back from injury—or from jail.

23. Atlanta* (10-6) – Andre Branch, DE, Clemson

Dirty Birds need DEs, and Branch is just too good of a value to pass up.

24. Pittsburgh* (12-4) – Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona St.

I don’t think he’ll get taken this high, but who knows, someone may be willing to take him on.

25. Denver* (8-8) – Kendall Reyes, DT, Conneticut

John Fox loves his D-lines.

26. Houston* (10-6) Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

Very fortunate here, Hill is well worth the risk.

27. New Orleans* (13-3) - FORFEITED

28. Green Bay* (15-1) – Trumaine Johnson, CB/S, Montana

GB needs help in the secondary, and they like taking promising guys from smaller schools.

29. Baltimore* (12-4) – Markelle Martin, FS, Oklahoma St.

Ravens need to start addressing their S post Ed Reed.

30. San Francisco* (13-3) – Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

Alex Smith needs some targets. Enter Sanu, a less athletic Brandon LaFell.

31. New England* (13-3) – Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia

Patriots still need depth at CB. A punt return threat would hurt things either.

32. New York Giants* (9-7) – Bobby Massie, OT, Ole Miss

NYG need O-line depth, and Massie is a good value.

Cat Scratch Reader JKP's Latest Outside the Box  Mock

Probably my last mock for a while. Per usual, I've tried my best to think outside the box, and not get stuck thinking within the conventional boundaries. I may not have accomplished, but at least I tried! Here's something new!

ROUND 1

1. Indianapolis Colts- Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

2. St. Louis Rams- Matt Kalil, OT, USC

3. Miami Dolphins (Projected Trade with Minnesota Vikings)- Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

4. Cleveland Browns- Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St.

B 5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

6. Washington Redskins- Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

7. Jacksonville Jaguars- Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

8. Carolina Panthers- Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

At number 8/9, the Panthers take Michael Floyd, WR from Notre Dame. It’s blatantly obvious that the Panthers biggest needs seem to be CB and DT. Their biggest needs seem to be defensive positions. But this is misleading. Yes, those positions are of a great need of an upgrade. However, there is one thing bigger than upgrading those positions. And that is providing Cam with weapons and tools to develop with for his career.

The offense has vastly improved in 2011, from 2010. And, yes the defense has greatly declined. However, when you have a future Pro-Bowl QB who has the potential to be in the Hall of Fame one day and reinvent the Quarterback position, you do everything you can to give him the tools and weapons around him to develop and grow to his utmost potential.

This means giving Cam a legitimate number two target to throw at. Someone who can get downfield. Someone who can be open when Smitty is not. Someone who can take the pressure and coverage off of Smitty. Someone who is a big and physical target with a big catching radius. Someone who can also be the number one wide receiver in the future, when Smitty departs.

Enter Michael Floyd. Standing 6’3" and 227, Floyd is an impressive prospect. Here is what I wrote about him in early October, when I mocked him to the Panthers who I thought would select ninth in JKP is MOCKING the Panthers yet again:

At 6-3, 220, Floyd has the size that is ideal for a WR prospect. But it's not just his size. He is a physical WR with great body control, and rarely if ever do cornerbacks interfere with him getting the ball when it's in the air. Now, he isn't the fastest guy, but he is quite a deep threat. And he has no trouble getting off the line and getting separation, which many receivers struggle with. His hands are like glue and he catches everything near his vicinity. And in the red zone, he is a truly a threat because he can catch everything. Also comes from a both a pro style system and Brian Kelly's spread and has run just about every route in the tree, and executes them well. Is also a dominant blocker, and pushes the CB around rather than the opposite. Potentially the best attribute about Floyd though is that he makes the QB a better QB.

The Panthers pick him because he can be for them what Vincent Jackson was for San Diego's offense. Floyd, like Jackson, would be a good deep threat and match for the Air Coryell style offense. With his size and skills, he'd fit in perfectly as the flanker, across from Steve Smith, and would take a lot of pressure (and extra players) off of him. And he'd make Cam even better than he is. Down the road, when Steve Smith leaves football (which I dislike even contemplating the thought) Floyd has the abilities of a number one receiver and could take over the reins.

Now, I'm not going to hide his potential character concerns. He has had a DUI and was nearly kicked off of the team. However, Brian Kelly is known as a disciplinarian and tough coach, and if he's allowed Floyd back on the team, his immaturity might be behind him.

This season, Floyd hasn’t disappointed. Although again playing with a mediocre squad, Floyd accumulated 100 receptions for 1147 yards, his highest season total ever (even over last year’s wonderful 79 reception, 1025 yard year). He also had 10 touchdowns this year, nearly one per game. He’s been consistently unstoppable almost all year long.

Of course, there will be Panther fans crying that he isn’t a value in the top 10, however many scouts disagree. Some contend that he will be the best professional Wide Receiver. He compares favorably, in style to Dwayne Bowe, Roddy White, and even Vincent Jackson.

Opposite Smitty, he would fit perfectly. He would fill the void of a large possesion receiver, and would fit perfectly into the Air Coryell offense. Teh Jimmeh would also be glad to see a familiar face. The face that may have made him what he was in college.

9. Minnesota Vikings (Projected Trade with Miami Dolphins)- Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

10. Buffalo Bills- Devon Still, DT, Penn St.

11. Kansas City Chiefs- Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

12. Seattle Seahawks- Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona St.

13. Arizona Cardinals- Mike Adams, OT, Ohio St.

14. Dallas Cowboys- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

15. Philadelphia Eagles- Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

16. New York Jets- Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

17. Cincinnati Bengals (From Oakland Raiders)- David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

18. San Diego Chargers- Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama

19. Chicago Bears- Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

20. Tennessee Titans- Quinton Coples, DE, UNC

21. Denver Broncos- Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

22. New York Giants- Zach Brown, LB, UNC

23. Houston Texans- Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

24. Detroit Lions- Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

25. Cincinnati Bengals- Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

26. Cleveland Browns (From Atlanta Falcons)- Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Illinois

27. Pittsburgh Steelers- Kelechi Osemele, OG, Iowa State

28. San Francisco 49ers- Dwight Jones, WR, UNC

29. Baltimore Ravens- Kevin Zeitler, OG, Wisconsin

30. Green Bay Packers- Jared Crick, DE, Wisconsin

31. New England Patriots (From New Orleans)- Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

32. New England Patriots- Mark Barron, S, Alabama

ROUND 2

33. Indianapolis Colts- Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia

34. St. Louis Rams- Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan

35. Minnesota Vikings-Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

36. Cleveland Browns – Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

37. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama Community College for Reformed Felons

38. Washington Redskins- Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

39. Jacksonville Jaguars- Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

40. Carolina Panthers- Brandon Washington, OG, Miami

In the second round, Carolina surprisingly goes offense yet again. After all, the defense can wait. We simply must, must provide Cam with everything we can for him to be successful and the best he can be. The defense can wait. After this draft, we can even go defense for the next five drafts.

Beyond WR, the only other hole on the team (other than the ill-used and neglected FB position) is the right side of the offensive line. This area has largely been a revolving door for the Panthers and an unsettled position.

A lot of the need for the right side of the offensive line rests upon the uncertainty of Jeff Otah’s situation. It seems that he, like Thomas Davis, may just never be healthy enough and injury free to play professional football.

This is why Brandon Washington makes perfect sense. A standout lineman from Miami, Brandon Washington is extremely versatile. He’s played RT, G, and finished this last season playing LT admirably. If Jeff Otah cannot return, Brandon Washington could fill his void. If Jeff Otah returns however, the Panthers can utlize his drive blocking forte at Right Guard.

Like Otah, Brandon Washington has a massive frame. Although 6-4, 320, he looks much bigger. And although he’s massive, he doesn’t play like a big-belly lineman. Surprisingly nimble, Washington has been able to man all positions because he has very good feet and footwork. However, drive blocking and moving the other man out of the way is his forte. He truly is a road grader.

Although initially, some might not be sure that Washington may be worth this high of a selection simply because of not hearing his name much, Washington is a top offensive line talent. This past year, at LT, Miami contends that he only made 5 errors the entire season. In his sophomore season, he racked 56 pancake blocks and 11 lumberjack blocks the entire year. That’s nearly 5 pancake and 1 lumberjack blocks a game. He also graded out as a near perfect 99 percent against Pitt, the highest of any Miami lineman all year. I’d contend that Washington is of fantastic value in the second round.

A little more about this less-known prospect, Washington has great character. The kind Ron Rivera and JR crave. Washington thrives off of negativity, and proclaims that his best attribute is turning negative emotions and attitudes into positive ones. He also was one of the best HS prospects in Florida, and even played DT in high school.

Cat Scratch Reader JKP's Somewhat Unconventional Draft

My last mock featured the Panthers getting Dre Kirkpatrick and Brandon Thompson, which was a very conventional and common view. In this mock, I've tried to mix it up a little bit and do something different! I hope this will suit the many who aren't crazy with Kirkpatrick or Thompson.

ROUND 1

1. Indianapolis Colts- Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

2. St. Louis Rams- Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St.

3. Minnesota Vikings- Matt Kalil, OT, USC

4. Cleveland Browns- Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

6. Washington Redskins- Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

7. Jacksonville Jaguars- Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

8. Carolina Panthers- Devon Still, DT, Penn St.

Defensive Tackle is what the Panthers perhaps need most, along with CB. They really have no one of significance in the middle, and it was especially obvious against the Saints. Their two rookie tackles also showed little, prompting Ronnie to go for this talent.

A hulking brute, Still is a monster in the middle. Standing at 6'5" and 310, he would bring some immediate size to our relatively undersized line. Fairly quick off the line, and capable of getting penetration consistently. Requires a double team, and is strong as an ox. Drafting Still would put some fear into the Carolina line and give the Panthers a legitimate DT.

9. Miami Dolphins- Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

10. Buffalo Bills- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

11. Kansas City Chiefs- Vontaze Burfict, LB, ASU

12. Seattle Seahawks- Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma

13. Arizona Cardinals- David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

14. Dallas Cowboys- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama Community College for Reformed Felons

15. Philadelphia Eagles- Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

16. New York Jets- Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

17. Cincinnati Bengals (From Oakland Raiders)- Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia

18. San Diego Chargers- Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Illinois

19. Chicago Bears- Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

20. Tennessee Titans- Quinton Coples, DE, UNC

21. Denver Broncos- Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson

34. St. Louis Rams- Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan

35. Minnesota Vikings-Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

36. Cleveland Browns – Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

37. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Zach Brown, LB, UNC

38. Washington Redskins- Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

39. Jacksonville Jaguars-Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech

40. Carolina Panthers- Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

Now, I know many will probably dislike this pick, however it's necessary. Getting an UT with Still is a necessity, but so is a capable NT. Fua showed little in his time, and we have some guys right now who are essentially band-aids. Yes, we took two DTs last year, but the reality is that they likely won't develop into anything significant. They are spent costs. Our defense is supremely lacking stud DTs, or even good DTs. We've gotta go get 'em!

Poe is a prototypical 43 NT. He's got tremendous size, and along with Still, would give us a pretty tall and sturdy line. Standing at 6'5" and 350, he's got great strength, is surprisingly quick, and can be an immovable anchor. Drafting Poe and Still would essentially solve most of our defensive problems. Our line would once again have bite, and it would affect all other parts of the defense. Cam also won't have to worry about our defense losing the game for the Panthers anymore.

Mocking The Draft Mocking in the New Year with JKP

ROUND 1

1. Indianapolis Colts- Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Do I really need to explain?

2. St. Louis Rams- Matt Kalil, OT, USC

It’s a lock. Rams need to protect Bradford.

3. Miami Dolphins (Projected trade with Minnesota Vikings)- Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

I’m projecting here that, after St. Louis almost guaranteed pick of Kalil, the Minnesota Vikings’ phone will be ringing off of the hook from teams desiring to get Griffin, since Cleveland would likely take him. Miami trades up, giving their 2012 1st and 2nd and 2013 2nd pick.

Miami does this because the new coach is going to want a QB to develop and be the face of the franchise for the next decade. Matt Moore has good games, but also terrible ones. He has some Tony Romo in him, but he, like Romo isn’t a Super Bowl caliber QB. Miami thus needs to look for a QB.

Personally, I’m not crazy about Griffin. But there is no doubting he’ll go top 10. And with the dearth of top tier QBs, there will be a lot of teams clamoring over him. He’s not the next Cam Newton. But he could be the next Michael Vick.

4. Cleveland Browns- Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Although Cleveland would have LOVED to have Griffin, they don’t panic. After what Cincinnati did last year, they are going to have to follow their model. Who knows, maybe they’ll go after Matt Flynn as an answer to the QB position.

No top tier QB is available, so they take the best player they can. They haven’t had a true #1 WR in a long time. Greg Little looks promising as a #2, but they need a #1. Blackmon stays in orange and white.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

The mocking community has been mocking a CB early to the Bucs for the last few years. At this position, it just makes sense again this year. No way they pass on Claiborne.

6. Washington Redskins- Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma

A reach? Sure. But the ‘Skins MUST get a QB. They tried the Rex experiment, and we know how that worked out. Christian Ponder was viewed as a reach last year as well.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars- Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Jags tend to reach sometimes. Prime example: Tyson Alualu, Eugene Monroe, Derrick Harvey, etc.

To be perfectly fair though, although Jeffery’s hype is down this year, the talent is still there. And he is a top ten talent. Jags need a threat on offense. And so they gamble here…

8. Carolina Panthers- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB/S, Alabama

The Panthers could go a multitude of ways here. Riley Reiff is an attractive option here, Quinton Coples is still available, and Devon Still and Michael Floyd would fill needs. But they desperately need a CB. And Dre Kirkpatrick is just way too talented to pass up. So, they take him, to shutdown WRs opposite the renewed Chris Gamble. And hey, if that doesn’t work, then they’ll just use him at S.

9. Minnesota Vikings (Projected trade with Miami Dolphins)- Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

Stud LT to protect Ponder. Great value.

10. Buffalo Bills- Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Illinois

The Bills OLBs are quite underwhelming. Whitney Mercilus could be their Aldon Smith.

11. Kansas City Chiefs- David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

Pencil this guy in as a starter, the Chiefs desperately need some OL help.

12. Seattle Seahawks- Quinton Coples, DE, UNC

I’m just going to say it, the Seahawks are screwed for the future. They should’ve taken a QB early in one of the past drafts. But they decided to be boneheads. Now, there isn’t an elite QB available. So, they’ll just have to settle for Coples, who’ll replace Red Bryant, who just isn’t getting anything done opposite Clemons.

13. Arizona Cardinals- Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

Easy decision. Levi Brown has been terrible, one of the worst in the NFL.

14. Dallas Cowboys- Devon Still, DE/DT, Penn St.

Besides their secondary, they need to upgrade their D-line.

15. Philadelphia Eagles- Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

The Eagles have ignored their LB corps long enough. Kuechly is a fine prospect, and should bring some much needed punch in the middle of their D.

16. New York Jets- Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

Floyd is a prospect Jet fans have been salivating over. As you know, their D is sturdy, their O just needs some retooling.

17. Cincinnati Bengals (From Oakland Raiders)- Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Five years ago, Richardson would have never lasted this long. However, RBs are a dime a dozen today. Cincinnati however could use one, and Richardson could nicely complement the Dalton/Green connection.

18. San Diego Chargers- Courtney Upshaw,OLB, Alabama

Chargers still have yet to find that menacing OLB. Their starters are less than fearsome.

19. Chicago Bears- Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

They’ve got to protect Cutler. Poor kid is a practice dummy for defensive lineman.

20. Tennessee Titans- Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia

Nearly all teams seem to need O-line help of some form.

21. Denver Broncos- Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

Corners are getting old.

22. New York Giants- Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina

Don’t know what it is, but the NYG seem to love players from UNC.

23. Houston Texans- Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Right now, Wright’s stock is soaring, and he could be a first rounder. Houston desperately needs a talented WR anyway, so they’ll reach for him even if he isn’t a good value.

24. Detroit Lions- Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

Lions go BPA, and once again make their D-line even scarier. No need to mettle on offense, it looks set, especially with the return of Leshoure.

25. Cincinnati Bengals- Mark Barron, S, Alabama

Loading up on talent from talent rich Alabama

26. Cleveland Browns (From Atlanta Falcons)- Mike Adams, RT, Ohio St.

They just need a stud at RT, and their O-line is set. No need to pack your bags Mike, you aren’t even leaving the state.

27. Pittsburgh Steelers- Alameda Ta’amu, NT, Washington

Need a big fatty for the future.

28. San Francisco 49ers- Brandon Jenkins, OLB, FSU

Could use a pass rusher next to Willis.

29. Baltimore Ravens- Vontaze Burfict, ILB, ASU

Ray Lewis’ successor.

30. Green Bay Packers- Nick Perry, OLB, USC

Now they have 2 USC ‘elephant’ LBs to attack the QB.

31. New England Patriots (From New Orleans)- Vinny Curry, OLB, Marshall

Who are we kidding? NE will wheel and deal one of these picks. However, I’ll have them taking an OLB here, cause they’ve always been needing a good one.

32. New England Patriots- Markelle Martin, S, Oklahoma St.

A little early for him, however Patriots badly need S help, and Martin will be a godsend. They are nearly last in the league against the pass despite having excellent corners.

ROUND 2

33. Indianapolis Colts- Jayron Hosley, CB, VT

34. St. Louis Rams- Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

35. Minnesota Vikings- Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

36. Cleveland Browns – Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford

37. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Lavonte David, LB, Nebraska

38. Washington Redskins- Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

39. Jacksonville Jaguars- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama Community College for Reformed Felons

40. Carolina Panthers- Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson

41. Minnesota (From projected trade with Miami Dolphins)- Dwight Jones, WR, UNC

42. Buffalo Bills- Bruce Irvin, OLB, West Virginia

43. Kansas City Chiefs- Josh Chapman, NT, Alabama

44. Seattle Seahawks- Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

45. Philadelphia Eagles (From Arizona Cardinals)- Jerel Worthy, DT, MSU.

46. Dallas Cowboys- Kelechi Osemele, G, Iowa St.

47. Philadelphia Eagles- Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

48. New York Jets- Kevin Zeitler, G, Wisconsin

49. New England Patriots (From Oakland Raiders)- Fletcher Cox, DE/DT, Miss St.

50. San Diego Chargers- Zebrie Sanders, OT, FSU

51. Chicago Bears- Tommy Streeter, WR, Miami

52. Tennessee Titans- Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas

53. Denver Broncos- Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

54. New York Giants- Dont’a Hightower, LB, Alabama

55. Houston Texans- Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

56. Detroit Lions- Mike Brewster, C, Ohio St.

57. Cincinnati Bengals- Ryan Broyles, WR, Arkansas

58. Atlanta Falcons- Ben Jones, C, Georgia

59. Pittsburgh Steelers- Andrew Datko, OT, FSU

60. San Francisco 49ers- Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa

61. Baltimore Ravens- Jonathan Banks, CB, Miss St.

62. Green Bay Packers- Trumaine Johnson, CB/S, Montana

63. New Orleans Saints- Derek Wolfe, DT, Cincinnati

64. New England Patriots- Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

31. New England Patriots (From New Orleans)- Vinny Curry, OLB, Marshall

Who are we kidding? NE will wheel and deal one of these picks. However, I’ll have them taking an OLB here, cause they’ve always been needing a good one.

32. New England Patriots- Markelle Martin, S, Oklahoma St.

A little early for him, however Patriots badly need S help, and Martin will be a godsend. They are nearly last in the league against the pass despite having excellent corners.

ROUND 2

33. Indianapolis Colts- Jayron Hosley, CB, VT

34. St. Louis Rams- Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

35. Minnesota Vikings- Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

36. Cleveland Browns – Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford

37. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Lavonte David, LB, Nebraska

38. Washington Redskins- Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

39. Jacksonville Jaguars- Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama Community College for Reformed Felons

40. Carolina Panthers- Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson

41. Minnesota (From projected trade with Miami Dolphins)- Dwight Jones, WR, UNC

42. Buffalo Bills- Bruce Irvin, OLB, West Virginia

43. Kansas City Chiefs- Josh Chapman, NT, Alabama

44. Seattle Seahawks- Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

45. Philadelphia Eagles (From Arizona Cardinals)- Jerel Worthy, DT, MSU.

46. Dallas Cowboys- Kelechi Osemele, G, Iowa St.

47. Philadelphia Eagles- Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

48. New York Jets- Kevin Zeitler, G, Wisconsin

49. New England Patriots (From Oakland Raiders)- Fletcher Cox, DE/DT, Miss St.

50. San Diego Chargers- Zebrie Sanders, OT, FSU

51. Chicago Bears- Tommy Streeter, WR, Miami

52. Tennessee Titans- Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas

53. Denver Broncos- Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

54. New York Giants- Dont’a Hightower, LB, Alabama

55. Houston Texans- Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

56. Detroit Lions- Mike Brewster, C, Ohio St.

57. Cincinnati Bengals- Ryan Broyles, WR, Arkansas

58. Atlanta Falcons- Ben Jones, C, Georgia

59. Pittsburgh Steelers- Andrew Datko, OT, FSU

60. San Francisco 49ers- Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa

61. Baltimore Ravens- Jonathan Banks, CB, Miss St.

62. Green Bay Packers- Trumaine Johnson, CB/S, Montana

63. New Orleans Saints- Derek Wolfe, DT, Cincinnati

64. New England Patriots- Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

Cat Scratch Reader I say take Reiff...

While PT is busy yapping about why the Panthers should desperately trade up for Morris Claiborne, I'm going to try to give you a fresh look at another point of view by highlighting another prospect. (Side note: PantherTrain, I apologize, this article was not meant to bash your article, it was simply a great jumping off point for mine.)

Cat Scratch Reader This post has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the Panthers...

Is it just me, or isn't this supposed to be a specialized blog dedicated to everything Panthers?

This question comes to me because the last two Fanposts have had absolutely no connection to the Carolina Panthers. Actually, they have no connection to anything even football related! The first was dedicated to funny web videos, and the second was one blogger's issue with a video game.

While I have no problem with posts like Ben Swanson's on Rufus on Fire (asking for bloggers to vote for him for a blogging scholarship), I take issue when CSR becomes a forum saturated with posts that are irrelevant to the purpose of the blog. Honestly, I don't want to check in for Panther news and to discuss Panther topics, to be bombarded with irrelevant posts about video games and comedy.

Hey, I like video games. And I like funny web videos as well. But I don't like CSR becoming a blase forum for anything that crosses bloggers' minds. The problem with allowing them, is the problem of the slippery slope. If you allow these two irrelevant posts, what's to stop another blogger from posting personal issues? If I notice that he's doing it, then I might be inclined to do so as well. Can we just nip this in the bud?

What do ya'll think CSR? Should we allow non-Panther and non-Football related posts?

Cat Scratch Reader JKP's 'Outside the Box' Mock Draft

JKP's ‘Outside the Box' Panthers Mock Draft

Let me preface this mock draft by asserting that many of you will not immediately agree or care for it.  This Panthers mock draft isn't a mere facsimile of the prototypical and mainstream mock drafts and draft views out there.  No, we aren't picking Morris Claiborne or Justin Blackmon in this draft (Sorry to crush your dreams PantherTrain).  That's too mainstream.  And I don't blindly subscribe to conventional thought.  My objective here is to get outside of the box, and present novel and yet rational ideas.  After all, looking at recent mock drafts has become a lackluster and dull task because the same players and wisdom are bequeathed upon almost all mocks.  Additionally, I disdain merely copycatting other mocks and draft views.  Therefore, I forewarn you that this mock draft may not be an immediate favorite because it will buck conventional wisdom.

Immediately, I predict that there will likely be cries that the players that I mock will not be viewed as BPA or of value (I have one specific one in mind, which will soon be quite apparent).  However, I'm fine with that.  In my mind, the present-day view of player value is more like a popularity ranking system based on ‘stock,' rather than an actual comprehensive review of the player's skills, impact, and ultimate worth.  The latter, in my opinion, is much accurate and what I seek to base this mock upon.  This mock therefore is based and valued upon my comprehensive analysis and judgment of each player.  I know that many will immediately vehemently disagree and dislike this, however...

Let it sink in a little bit...

Disregard conventional thinking, and allow yourself to break free of the confines of mainstream thought...

Then, I encourage you to consider this mock draft, and the avant-garde and unorthodox thinking behind it.

According to ESPN, the Panthers have placed Cam Newton on the team's injury report. However, he is listed as probable and is likely to play, as the soreness in his throwing shoulder was cleared by MRI.

Most likely, this won't be a big deal, but I bet this gave you a big scare, as it did to me!

Cat Scratch Reader JKP is MOCKING the Panthers yet again...

In my last post, I proposed that the Carolina Panthers would take Nebraska DT Jared Crick in the 2012 draft.  Some liked it, some hated it.  So, I have another proposal.  It is based off of my first mock of the year, For Those About to MOCK, We Salute You (which you can find on Mocking the Draft), in which I personally ordered the teams based upon statistics and personal judgment.  In it, I have the Panthers picking 9th overall.  With the 9th pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select....

Mocking The Draft For those about to MOCK, we salute you!

Howdy, fellow Mockers!  Don't know about ya'll, but since the last draft ended and college football started, the 2012 draft has been just about all that I can think of.  Well, besides women of course.  Anywho, here's my first mock of the year.  Enjoy!

BUT FIRST!  A few notes on my draft and why it is a little different than most.

The order by which I have selected to have my mock draft arranged is not based upon strength of schedule, current win/loss record, or league standings but rather upon my opinions based upon statistics and judgement.  [As a quick side note, I base my offense and defensive rankings upon points scored and points scored PER GAME rather than cumulative points or yards or yards per game]

The top 10 teams and playoff teams (20-32) are there for a reason, and I will provide an explanation on why I think they are there.  As for the middling teams (teams 11-20) I really haven’t a clue how they will shake out between 11-20, however based upon statistics and how they are currently playing, I foresee them being between 11-20 [basically because they are middling in most all statistics and because their offense/defense margin hovers closely over or under average].  Finally, I do have a Superbowl Champion, and I will discuss how the playoffs will shake out, in my mind at least!

Additionally, the draftees I have chosen for each team are based upon my own estimations of where prospects will likely land.  Some, I am more certain of their positions than others.

Lastly, I do offer my opinions on the teams.  They are not meant to be mean or cruel, but just realistic.  I try to be fair, even with respect to my favorite team.  Sorry in advance if I offend you, but I have the statistics to show where your team will land this year.

Oh yeah, and PPG= Points Per Game

HERE WE GO!

1.       Kansas City Chiefs

NFL’s 3rd most pitiful offense, scoring a measly 12 PPG, and NFL’s most porous D.  They’ll take the ‘suck for Luck’ crown, I haven’t a doubt!

Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford.  No Brainer.  Chiefs win the Napoleon Dynamite look alike, or neckbeard, whichever you prefer.

110106_andrew_luck_medium

via media.bakersfieldnow.com

2.       Jacksonville Jaguars -

Surprisingly, they have the NFL’s worst offense.  Their defense is actually respectable, a top 15 D.  However, they are scoring under 10 PPG.  You can’t get many wins with that, just ask Carolina who endured the very same situation last year.

Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina.  They desperately need a dominant WR for Gabbert to throw to and to mature with.  Will be a smart pick, because he’ll really help the sputtering offense.   Jacksonville’s O will become quite similar to Jeffery’s alma mater, minus the idiot QB play.

Alshonjeffery_display_image_medium

via cdn.bleacherreport.net

3.       St. Louis Rams -

2nd worst O, 3rd worst D.  Not trailing far behind the Chefs, who can’t cook up many wins.

Matt Kalil, OT, USC.  Kalil will not escape the top 5.  He is Jake Long 2.0 in terms of athleticism, frame, strength, and draft value.  Smart choice for St Lew, will be a multi-Pro Bowler and long term fixation at LT.

Matt-kalil1_medium

via newnfldraft.com

4.       Indianapolis Colts

Have porous D, and offense is bad, but at least they are scoring more than 2 TDs a game.  That’s more than J-Ville can say.

Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma.  Bill Polian has been talking about getting a future QB in the past few drafts if the price is right.  However the cost is too much now to bear not getting one.  Manning’s return is uncertain, and frankly, as I’ve been saying since the start of TC, I don’t think he’s going to return to the gridiron.  EVER.  But that’s a whole another subject in its entirety.  Even if Manning is back, it might only be for a short time.  So, it would be wise to go after a successor now, rather than later.

5.       Minnesota Vikings

Will put in Ponder and get some wins at some point.  Though defense is average, offense is plain stale.

Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State.  Vikings need a lot of things.  They need O-line help, but they also need to give Ponder, the future, someone to throw to.  They have Rudolph and Harvin, but not really much beyond that.

6.       Miami Dolphins

Aren’t the very worst, but are giving up far more than they’re scoring.  Also in a brutal division this year.  They really don’t have a chance beating the Bills or Patriots.

Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford.  The Fins are in a stinky position once again.  They missed out on Luck and Jones.  Barkley isn’t worth taking here.  So, they shore up the right side of their line.  Later, they’ll use picks for their D.

7.       Seattle Seahawks

Pitiful O, average D.  Gets some wins in easy division.

Matt Barkley, QB, USC.  With Peter Carroll, nothing suprises me.  He could be completely infatuated with Barkley, or despise him, I don’t know.  He’s also proved that he has no more loyalty to USC as he has chosen not to draft many of his former players in favor of other players (Earl Thomas in place of Taylor Mays comes to mind).  But he needs a QB.  No more of this Charlie Whitehurst/CFL quarterbacks, that’s just not going to cut it.  Either they pick up a top tier QB this year, or call up Shane Falco or something super creative, they are really out of options.  By the way, I think Barkley very well might tumble into the second round, a la Jimmeh Clausen, come April, but I have him going to the Hawks here anyway.  Oh yeah, and Taylor swift comes part of the package.  JK, found this pic online, but have no clue why the two are associated.

8.       Denver Broncos

Stubborn ole’ Foxy will have to put in Tebow at some point, and when he does they’ll start getting some wins.  Let us not forget that the Broncos had one of the best passing offenses in the league a few years ago, and that core remains there (Brandon Lloyd, Eddie Royal).  So when they put Tebow back in, he’ll light it up.  However, until then, they’ll go on with a top 10 worst offense.  Their Defense is also a mess and will need more time to adjust back to 43 D.  They will get some wins in an easier AFC division, just not many.

Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama.  Foxy loves his RBs.  At Carolina, he took 2 in the first round in under 10 years.  And Knowshon ain’t cutting it.  He’s more of a Reggie Bush type scatter back than true #1 back.  So, he gets his guy to lead the attack.  I really don’t think they go QB, because I really think Tebow will prove his value by the end of the year, by getting in the game, showing some promise, and reigniting the offense (which by the way was great 2 years ago).  And yes, I do think that Richardson is better than Ingram.  Always have.  Will be a top pick, no doubt.

Trentrichardson3_3150_medium

via cdn0.sbnation.com

9.       Carolina Panthers -

Cammy Cam has lit a spark in the Panthers O, and they now are an average offense, which is incredible being that they could only put a single digit on the scoreboard last year.  Their D is on the porous side.

Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame.  A surprise?  Yes.  While Jeffery and Blackmon are being put on pedestals, Floyd is  silently racking up the stats.  Comparatively, Blackmon and Jeffery’s stats aren’t even close.  And let me remind you that Floyd is doing this with a subpar cast and mediocre at best QB.  Getting past his character concerns, Floyd has top 10 written all over him.

Carolina on the other hand, needs someone opposite the aging but fiery as always Steve Smith for Cammy Cam to throw to.  They have defensive needs, and could go O-line here, but they need to give Cammy a WR to grow with.  With better WRs, Cammy could be much more dangerous than he already is if he actually is, which is scary.  Enter Floyd, who, in my mind reminds me of Vincent Jackson (which is exactly what Ron Rivera and Rob Chudzinski are looking for, being former Charger coaches and using the SD offensive playbook).  At 6’3" and 220, is a physical WR who, while not a speedster, can get downfield and make the big catch.  Has future number 1 written all over him.

10.   Cleveland Browns

Hello Cleveland!  (Says Spinal Tap to the wrong stage!)  Hah, sorry just had to put that in there!  That’s what I think of when I think of Cleveland.  Well, that and LbJ if you catch my drift.  But when I think about the Cleveland football team, I think about a decent D and slightly below mediocre offense. Will be back in top 10 when April comes around.

Vontaze Burfict, LB, ASU.  So far, this draft has been offensive heavy, and I think it will likely shake out that way in April.  This means though, that Cleveland, or whomever, will get their pick of the Defensive litter.  Burfict is this year’s Von Miller.  Every bit as good, maybe even more so.  Cleveland has a QB, and some offensive weapons, but holes on D.  Linebacker is a black whole.  They have no playmakers there.  Enter Burfict, who probably will be D-ROY.  If you are Cleveland, yes you need a WR, however Burfict is just way to good to pass up.  They’d be fools not to take him.

Vontaze-burfict-arizona_state-lb_4191_medium

via i.cdn.turner.com

11.   Oakland Raiders-

Raiders are scoring wonderfully, however they are also getting scored on far too much to have too great of a record.

Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama.  I know it’s almost cliché to pick the Raiders a CB, however their weakness really is the D, and they are starting Chimdi Chekwa and some guy named Routt at CB.  They could definitely use a quality CB to fill you know who’s shoes.  Kirkpatrick isn’t a bad replacement.

12.   Cincinnati Bengals

Bungles actually win some games and do okay.

Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa.  Sorry but Whitworth isn’t going to cut it as a long term answer at LT.  Need an upgrade.

13.   Pittsburgh Steelers

Steelers have a down year, their offense is staggering along and D is really starting to age.

Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State.  Yes, I realize that this mock is going crazy with the O-linemen, however I think that there will be a lot of demand  and a good supply in 2012.  Steelers need O-line help just like most others.

14.   Arizona Cardinals -

Cards do better than expected!  (Also because they are in an easier division.)

Donte Paige Moss, DE/34 OLB, UNC.  The Cards need some rushers outside.  Porter is old and I don’t know the other guy, he looks like a nobody.  Plus, the Cards love those hyphen names (Rodgers-Cromartie, Stephens-Howling, etc...)

15.   Philadelphia Eagles-

Injuries, offensive line problems, and unexpected defensive woes cause Eagles to middle.

Manti T’eo, LB, Notre Dame.  Offense is potent enough, D can get to QB, and they have some corners, so they’ll need to patch up their LB corps.

16.   Dallas Cowboys

Middling team.  Enough said.

Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska.  Crick is the top DT in my opinion.  While he doesn’t have the same exact skill set, I think he’s the same type of player as Nick Fairley.  He’s a disruptor and backfield penetrator.  Can’t say enough how much I like this guy.  Don’t see him getting past 20, especially since JJ Watt, who he really compares well to, went so early last year.  The ‘Boys take him to upgrade their D, and because Jerry really likes guys from the Heartland.

via a323.yahoofs.com

17.   Chicago Bears

Same story as Falcons.  GB and Detroit will win division and wild card.  And other WC is already taken.

Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin.  The loss of Olin Kreutz has hurt more than they thought, so they get an apt replacement in Konz.  Thought about mocking Fuller to them here, because well you know how Mike Martz loves to take WRs in the first round.  However Fuller isn’t a first round talent and won’t go in the first round come April.  He’s a poor man’s Jon Baldwin, and he’s soft, not a good blocker, not a speedster, outmuscled easily, and has a lot of trouble separating.

18.   Atlanta Falcons -

Miss out on playoffs.  Will have a winning record, however TB and NO already have NFC Wild Card and Crown respectively.  Unfortunately, Detroit has the better record than ATL, and gets the other WC.

Cleveland picks:

Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina.  Being that ATL desperately wanted Julio Jones, they’ve forfeited this pick to Cleveland, which is going to make good use of it, cause it needs it!  Cleveland still would like to upgrade it’s offensive weapons, but the value just isn’t here.  The value is in defensive players.  So, they take the athletic DE Ingram, who had a breakout year for South Carolina.  So far, he has 5.5 sacks, 7 TFL, 2 interceptions, 1 TD run, and 26 tackles.  Just a beast.  The Browns need rushers for their new 43 D, and Ingram is going to be a 1st rounder, you can count on that!

19.   New York Jets -

For the first time, miss the playoffs.  Sorry, but Sanchez is only mediocre and can only take a team so far with his arm alone.

Brandon Jenkins, 34 OLB, FSU.  Need to get Rexy some pass rushers finally.

20.   Washington Redskins

Just miss the playoffs.

Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M.  Gross Rexman has been alright, however he’s not really a long term answer for Shanny, so I give them a QB.

21.   San Francisco 49ers

Good D, middling offense.  They’ll win the NFC West, but only because they are the best of the worst of their stinky division.

Kelechi Osemele, G, Iowa State.  A little more beef for the trenches.

22.   San Diego Chargers  -

Top 10 D, middling offense.  They’ll obviously win the AFC West, because frankly, they don’t have much competition.  However, they aren’t going much further than that.

Vinny Curry, 34 OLB, Marshall.  A very San Diego-esque pick.  They’re still looking for that premier edge rusher.

23.   New York Giants -

The Giants win the NFC East but are by no means a scary team.  They have a top 10 offense and a decent D, however I’m not sure how consistent they can be.  Also, I think whoever emerges from the lowly NFC East this year isn’t going to be too much of a contender.  A down year for the NFC East.

Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College.  It’s pretty obvious that the Giants don’t have anything at LB.  And it’s also obvious that they ALWAYS go BPA even if they don’t really need the position (Prince Amukamara, JPP).  This year, BPA meets Needs.

24.   Houston Texans

The switch to the 34 D under Coordinator Wade has made a world of difference.  They now have a top 5 D.  Add that to their top 10 offense, and you have yourself a playoff contender!  Finally they make it in via the AFC South crown, however they are going to flounder (just my personal opinion, sorry Texans fans!)

Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers.  Texans have a good D (finally), and are solid at skill positions, however still are aching for someone across from Andre Johnson.  Enter Sanu.

25.   Tampa Bay Buccaneers -

While they don’t take the NFC South crown, the Bucs have finally gotten back into the playoffs.  They’ll get in via NFC wildcard and beat a team but go no further.  A top 10 D is going to get them there, but their offense still has some maturing to do to go any further.

Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU.  You already know about Ronde Barbers age, so I’m going to leave it at that.

26.   Tennessee Titans

Surprise, the Titans make the playoffs!  They do so by AFC wildcard though.  Their offense is middling, however their defense is the best in the NFL right now.  So, they’ll make it in, and I see them going farther than the actual AFC south winner.

Quinton Coples, DE, UNC.  Although the Tennessee D is top of the league in points per game allowed, they could definitely use some upgrades at DE.  Especially since Derrick Morgan hasn’t really blossomed yet.

27.   New Orleans Saints

Another scoring dynamo, the Saints will take the NFC South crown.  The defense though, will hamstring them deep in the playoff hunt.

NO won’t actually be picking here though, being that they gave it up for Mark Ingram.  And retrospectively, I was a smart gamble, being that their pick is very late.

New England picks…

Alameda Ta’amu, DT, Washington.  The Patriots need to retool their D-Line.  Ever since they traded away Seymour, it hasn’t been spectacular.

28.   New England Patriots -

The Pats are the highest scoring team in the AFC, and are definitely playoff bound.  They’ll either be the AFC East champ or an AFC wildcard, but they’ll be in the hunt.  They just aren’t SB bound this year.  Not with that defense.

Devin Taylor, DE, South Carolina.  The Pats still haven’t found that edge rusher that they’ve been looking for.  Taylor also adds the prospect of scheme versatility being that he could stand up and rush the passer a la Clay Matthews, or put his hand in the dirt and get after ‘em.

29.   Buffalo Bills -

While it was merely a regular season game, the Bills win over the Patriots was a significant win.  They are either the AFC East champ or a wildcard, but they are going to go deep in the playoffs. Why? They’re scoring like crazy@ 33.2 PPG, and they’re defense isn’t bad.  Actually, it’s better than the Patriots.  And that’s why I am giving them the leg up on the Pats in the playoffs.

Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama.  Merriman has been decent, but by no means is the answer at OLB.

30.   Detroit Lions

They are 4-0 and they are for real people.  Go ahead, laugh and scoff.  However, I think they are for real.  And I’m getting on the bandwagon.  Behind GB, they have the second best offense in the NFL.  They also have a top 10 defense.  They’re going to go be a wildcard, but will meet their fellow NFC North rival Packers in the NFC champ game, ultimately losing, because hey, it’s Green Bay!

Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech.  The Lions D is formidable, but they could add a quality corner.  They take Hosley over Gilmore, because Gilmore is a bit of risk.  He gives up far too many big plays than he should.

31.   Green Bay Packers-

The Pack is back!  At least, as the reigning NFC champ and NFC North champ.  Currently, they are an offensive dynamo, scoring 37 PPG.  Defensively, they are middling, however Rodgers is one who can lift a team up.  With their experience, I see them making it back to the SB, however I don’t see them hoisting the Lombardi trophy once again.

Shayne Skov, OLB, Stanford.  Most are mocking Bruce Irvin here, but I’m not so sure he’s a first rounder, so I have them taking Skov who’s already plays in the 34 D and is a stud.

108026780_display_image_medium

via cdn.bleacherreport.net

32.   Baltimore Ravens

As of right now, the Ravens have the second best defense in the NFL, allowing only 14.2 PPG.  Paired with the 6th best offense, gaining 29.8 PPG, the Ravens in my opinion have the best offensive/defensive combo.  They are my Super Bowl Champions!

Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia.  I almost had them picking Gilmore for the value, however I noticed that they are starting Andre Gurode at G.  They need a long term answer there.

Well there you have it.  Disagree?  I bet you do.  But keep it to yourself, I don't wanna hear your complaints.  JK, bring it on!

Cat Scratch Reader In the 2012 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers Select...

Jared Crick, Defensive tackle, Nebraska.  No, I didn’t travel through time in Doctor Emmitt Brown’s DeLorean.  And I’m not Miss Cleo.  Frankly, I don’t have a clue what the future holds!  However, there are a couple of things that I foresee happening in 2012.

The first is that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ will be a letdown.

The second is that Jared Crick is going to be the ‘Tyson Alualu’ of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The third is that Jared Crick is going to be the Carolina Panthers draft selection.

Jared-crick_medium

via newnfldraft.com

Let me explain a little more…

First things first, little can beat ‘The Dark Knight.’  Let’s be honest here Maggie Gyllenhall is disgusting and never should have been in the conversation for playing the part of ‘Rachel.’ However, Heath Ledger’s performance was chilling, legendary, and put Jack Nicholson’s Joker to shame.  Yes, I’m sure Tom Hardy might be a good villain.  And I’m very excited to see a Batman taped in Pittsburgh (especially being that there’ll be some football in the movie!).  However, little can follow the now departed Heath Ledger’s performance.  So, I just can’t see the next Batman being as good as the last.  But that’s just me!

Now back to football…

Although it won't be until 10 a.m. this morning that FA will officially begin, it seems that most UDFAs have come to terms with teams. Additionally, it appears that the Panthers have pulled in some of the top crop of this year's UDFA class. Everyone already knows that we've pulled in top UDFA CB Kendric Burney and C Ryan Pugh, however it seemt that we've also come to terms with top UDFA WR Darvin Adams, top UDFA DE Ugo Chinasa, and top UDFA OT Byron Bell. We've also come to terms with Nebraska kickoff specialist Adi Kunalic.

10 months ago Catblue_tiny jkp1516 0 comments

Okay, so it's only the end of the fifth round by now, but I think this article makes a very good point. In the past, the Panthers were a strictly BPA team who occaisionally would take a chance on a guy they really liked. It seems from this year, the Panthers are shedding their conservative draft philosophy and taking chances on a potential dynomite boom/bust prospect, underrated DTs, and players with injury and character concerns.

Like it even matters anymore. Sorry Jimmeh, we've got Cam now, you are done.

From Sal Palantonio:
"Jerry Richardson the owner of the team met with Marty Hurney the general manager and the head coach Ron Rivera and he signed off on the proposal of drafting Cam Newton, who he met with in his home for many, many hours and was very impressed with."

Cat Scratch Reader Last Minute Pre-Draft Predictions and Musings...

What's up Panther faithful?  Only a few hours until we are underway.  I'm not even in the state of New York, but I can still feel the excitement!  Just wanted to throw out some last minute predictions and thoughts before the draft begins just to see how some of my pre-draft thoughts pan out and measure up to that idiot Mel Kiper, hah!  I hope you give me your draft thoughts and what you think about mine!

Cat Scratch Reader Mocking the Panthers 2011 Draft with JKP

Like BWSmith and James Dator, I have simulated the Panthers draft by using Nolan Nawrocki’s draft value chart.  The only exception to the draft value chart is that I have the Panthers selecting (SPOILER ALERT!) Stephen Paea with the 65th pick, which goes against the draft value chart, being that he’s rated as a 1st round talent there.  I am probably the only person who thinks Paea will slide this far here, however I give solid reasoning for his slide with the pick.  With that said, I have made these selections while trying my absolute best to bypass my emotions and biases.  These selections are who I think the Panthers WILL pick, not who I would LIKE for them to pick.  Heck, I’m not crazy about Vincent Brown OR Jerrel Powe, however I think that the Panthers would select them (being that they are rumored to be highly interested in Brown and being that Powe will likely last long enough for the Panthers to rationalize spending a late round flier on him).  Also, I would love to have Kenrick Ellis on our team, however I just don't see us drafting him.

"I've seen all I need to see as far as him throwing a football," Rivera told Moon. "I'm already convinced."

Contrary to what Nolan Nawrocki had stated of Cam Newton, Auburn OC Gus Malzahn says Cam is the "best he's ever seen in a locker room," is a great person off the field, and is pro ready.

This is a well written article that pretty much sums up how I feel about BG. I too just don't get the fascination with him, and how he has risen up to being the top QB in the draft, given that I don't fall for combine studs with great measurables or 5 star HS players that never really amount to anything. Anyway, because there has been a lot of pro-BG propaganda on this site, I thought I'd even out the conversation with some very reasonable anti-BG talk. Enjoy!

It has been rumored that RB DeAngello Williams won't receive the franchise tag, however Adam Schefter now reports that a source tells him that the Panthers have indeed not decided to use the tag on Williams. It is now between C Ryan Kalil and DE Charles Johnson.

According to ProFootballTalk, retired DT Warren Sapp prefers Marcel Dareus over Nick Fairley as the top DT prospect. Like Mayock, he doesn't believe that Fairley is the better prospect, citing his work ethic and technique.

Cat Scratch Reader Carolina Panthers 2011 MTD Draft Haul

The 2011 Mocking the Draft Live Draft has just commenced, and as the Panthers Draft Rep, I am here to report the Panthers haul.  Instead of targeting players or positions at certain points of the draft, my goal was to maintain the Best Player Available strategy throughout the draft, and more or less, I feel that I accomplished that.  I highly encourage you to  look at the final report of the draft, on mockingthedraft.com.  It should give you an idea as to who might be available when we pick.  It will also show you the environment that I made these picks in, and you can look at who you might have chosen instead.  With the 1st, 65th, 97th, and 129th picks, here are the players that I was able to haul in for the Panthers in 2011.

Poll
As the Carolina Panthers Draft Representative, How do you feel that I drafted?

However, LaCanfora says that the Panthers will instead use the tag on Kalil or Johnson, likely next week before the combine begins. Surprised?

Cat Scratch Reader In the 2011 MTD Live Draft, With the 65th, 97th, and 129th pick, the Carolina Panthers Select...

Alright, so now that we have covered the topic of who the Panthers should select first overall in the 2011 MTD Live 5 Round Mock Draft, I'd like to turn to our next three picks.

Just like we speculated with the first overall pick, please tell me, with well-thought out reason, who we should pick with our 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks.  Please give me somewhere between 5-10 players who you would like to see on our team if the MTD Live Draft was for real.  But please be realistic and don't list Prince Amukamara in the 4th round and such.

And like my last post on the first overall pick, I'll try my best when the time comes to amalgamate opinions and ideas, and make the best choice to represent the Carolina Panthers in the 2011 MTD Live Draft!

Alright Panther fans, give me your wish lists for rounds 3,4, and 5.  Look forward to seeing who ya'll want and having a good discussion about who we should be taking in these rounds!
