Pitching staff Battle Cry
After a couple weeks, our starting pitching staff looks to be in shambles. This got me thinking about the that great poem/Battle Cry of the '48 Boston Braves:
First we'll use Spahn
then we'll use Sain
Then an off day
followed by rain
Back will come Spahn
followed by Sain
And followed
we hope
by two days of rain.
That team used "Spahn & Sain, then pray for rain" to win the NL with a 91-62 record, losing in the world series to the Cleveland Indians.
Final touches on the 25-man
Looks like with all the releases this AM most of the questions are clearing up. Does this look accurate?
Around the Division - Thirdbase
To complete a rundown of the NL Central's infielders:
Around the Division - Shortstop
Time for SS as we move around the infield.
Around the Division - Second base
Since the 1B situation wasn't much fun to look at from the Bucco perspective, let's quickly move on. Here's a look at the second basemen across the division:

Around the Division - First Base
I did catchers a week or so ago, here's a look at the firstbasemen around the NL Central.
Around the Division - Catchers
It's getting close, most of the rosters are set and optimism springs eternal across most fandoms. As usual, most of the talking heads see the Bucs fighting it out for last in the NL Central. Probably an accurate assessment since we haven't done anything in like, 18 years.
But let's take a look position by position at just where we stack up in the division. Starting with catcher, how would you rank the NL Central starters (as projected by MLB.com) or in general, what grade would you give each team at this position?
If you guys like this, I will post a rundown of the other positions over the next few weeks. Something to get the spring training water boiling.
Jeff Clement
Why are so many down on management projecting Clement to being our starting 1b next season?
Brandon Jones
More Pirate hate
This morning DK tore apart Bill Madden's contention in the NY Daily News that the Pirates shed nearly $29M in payroll last year with the trades of Jack Wilson, Nate McLouth, Adam LaRoche, Freddy Sanchez, Ian Snell and John Grabow for "a bunch of minimum salary unproven prospects."
Dashed hopes again
Ok, I am doing a little TV trolling when I stumble onto a replay of the '79 Game 7 World Series game. Awesome, a little premature holiday cheer!!! The kids & wife are nestled still snug in bed, so I grab another cup of coffee and sit down to watch the final two innings and the ensuing victory celebration while my soul fills with just how great it is to be a Pirate fan. I am being to feel my heart grow 3x as large as I get visions that this could happen once again in my lifetime. And then.....
Practice Squad
I haven't seen these posted anywhere, any reaction? Good to hold onto Anderson, Johnson, and Radovich. Kind of up in the air about Booty & Mills. By the way, I also saw that Marcus McCauley signed with the Lions. I hope he keeps playing that soft zone against us.
